Exception Handling in B2B 11g

All,
When I create and deploy a SOA Composite to receive B2B Exceptions everything works great ,I am seeing the exceptions in SOA. however I also see that exceptions are still being enqueued to IP_QTAB even after deploying the SOA Composite
This is contrary to what we have seen for regular B2B messages, is there a setting to stop error messages from queuing up when I have the composite deployed ?
Thanks,
Kalyan Sura

Not sure what's the point of this redundancy, May be the best practice would be is just to use AQ Adapter to dequeue teh messages , as B2B adapter always defaults B2B user as consumer.
Any other thoughts ?
Thanks,
Kalyan Sura

  • Default Exception Handling in B2B

    Hi All,
    Need your help and advise on the below requirement we have currently:
    Source system sends an XML input to MW and therein, we transform it into PO_850 XSD and sends it to B2B. We are validating the XSD in B2B and then generating an EDI_PO_850 file and sending it to the Trading Partner. We are going to have 5 different Target Trading Partner. I have 2 questions w.r.t the default exception handling in place for Oracle B2B:
    1. Which Queue will have the Error Information for the above case? B2B_IN_Queue/B2B_OUT_Queue/B2B_IP_IN_Queue
    2. We would like to consume the error messages specific to a trading partner from the JMS Queue directly, how can we achieve it?
    Appreciate your help in this regard.
    Thanks in Advance
    Priyanka

    Hi Priyanka
    B2B operates in two modes for default internal queue communication - AQ and JMS. This is controlled in the Admin/Configuration page "use JMS queues" checkbox.
    In AQ, the queue to which the exception message is delivered would be IP_IN_QUEUE
    In JMS the queue to which the exception message is delivered would be B2B_IN_QUEUE. Since you speak about reading error message from the JMS queue directly, am thinking this would be the one of interest to you.
    In addition to the above we can create custom JMS internal delivery queue and this can be associated to the Exception Queue which can be assigned in the Admin/Configuration page.
    With regards to reading the exception msg specific to the trading partner from the JMS Queue directly, this can be done by adding a check on the dequeue process. Each exception message is populated with From_Party and To_Party information. In the outbound delivery case, the exception message should have To_Party set as the partner's name. This can be checked.
    Hope that helps.

    Arun

  • B2B Exception handling

    Hi,
    Implementing exception handling part for B2B and the version using is 11g.
    I am implementing exception handling by using JMS queue "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    If message is getting error out then B2B producing error message into "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    Checked in server and "B2B_IN_QUEUE" consist the error message.
    In BPEL I am consuming the message. But the instance is not getting created for the message available in "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    In Jms Adapter configuration wizard not provided the option for defining consumer type as "B2BErroruser". Due to consumer type is undefined thinking bpel is not intiating itself by consuming the error message available in "B2B_IN_QUEUE".
    I tried by providing message property "MSG_TYPE" value as '3' also.
    But still Bpel instance is not creating...
    Please tell me is required to set any other message properties to make bpel to consume the message.
    Thanks&Regards,

    Hi Anuj,
    First of all check whether there is any consumer on B2B_IN_Queue or not? You may check it on weblogic admin console.
    I am checking for the consumers information in Monitor tab of B2B_IN_Queue and noticed the below information
    Consumers Current : 0
    Consumers High : 1
    Consumers Total : 1
    Messages Current : 3
    Messages Pending : 0
    Messages Total : 3
    Messages High : 3
    After deployed the BPEL process the value of 'Consumers Current' not updating to 1 from 0.
    Values of Consumers Total and Consumers Current not changing after deploying the process or after un deploying the bpel process.
    Can you please tell me what is difference between Consumers Total and Consumers Current?
    If the path i am using for getting consumers information of B2B_IN_Queue is wrong please suggest correct path in the admin console.
    Thanks&Regards,

  • 11g ADF TaskFlow Exception Handling in BPM

    Hi Guys
    BPM 11g
    I have a human task that is implemented as an ADF task flow. I would like to be able to throw an exception from the ADF application and have it handled by the BPM process, does anyone know if this is possible or how I would do that?
    At the moment I have an ADF error page - I could return an "error" outcome to the process from that but an error is an error and it feels right to show that in the process instead of a normal outcome.
    anyone else worked through this?
    cheers,

  • UTL file exception handling oracle 11g

    We use oracle 11g
    We use UTL file and exception handling in many place. Thanks in advance.
    We have many utl program and we are writing same exception handling code ,copy and paste .
    It is possible to create new UTL exception procedure and call it.
    I am not sure how to write generic UTL exception procedure and reuse the same.
    I am learning oracle etl files method.
    Please advise.

    Very poor implementation.
    a) Absolutely no need for that exception handler in there. It should be removed.
    b) As it's a procedure for logging exceptions relating to UTL_FILE, it would seem error prone to be logging the errors with UTL_FILE. For example, what is it supposed to do if the exception is raised because of lack of disk space in those file locations? How is it going to write out the exception with the disk full? Also, if the exception handler is used by multiple processes, then only 1 process at a time can access the log file to write it's exceptions, so it doesn't scale well. Better logging is done by having an autonomous transaction procedure that writes log/trace messages to dedicated table(s). That also means that the logs etc. can be viewed, as appropriate, from any client using SQL (either manually or through a application written to view logs etc.), rather than requiring physical/remote access to the server o/s to go and view the contents of the file, which in itself could lock the file and prevent any process from writing further logs whilst it's being used.

  • B2B 11G questions

    Hi B2BGurus,
    Can anyone explain us with below questions, Here i am giving our scenario and my questions
    Scenarion:
    Div A FTP-> SOA-->B2B OutboundCoustome queue ---> B2B---->Http or HTTPs(AS2) or FTP(As2)
    Div B FTP-> SOA-->B2B OutboundCoustome queue ---->B2B---->Http or HTTPs(AS2) or FTP(As2)
    Div C FTP-> SOA-->B2B OutboundCoustome queue ---- B2B---->Http or HTTPs(AS2) or FTP(As2)
    Div D FTP-> SOA-->B2B OutboundCoustome queue ---->B2B---->Http or HTTPs(AS2) or FTP(As2)
    Explanantion of scenarion:
    1.     Division people places the files in FTP
    2.     Soa picks it up, do the transformation and places the file in B2B outbound custom queue
    3.     B2B server picks it up from B2B outbound custom queue and converts it into native EDI and sends it to trading partner using AS2

    Hi cnu,
    Http or HTTPs(AS2) or FTP(As2)AS2 supports HTTP/HTTPS only. FTP is not supported as part of AS2.
    1. My idea is --for each trading partner planning to create two different queues (one is for outbound and another one is inbound), is it suggestible of creating a n number of custom queues? It makes sense, specially from maintenance perspective.
    2. If we creating a custom queues which is suggestible( either JMS custom queues or AQ custom queues)Depending upon use case and design you may use either of AQ/JMS but JMS may be preferred for tight performance requirement use cases. (my personal opinion)
    3. If any transaction was error out, to which queues the transaction will go? And how can we find that transaction in database.By default, exception queue is IP_IN_QUEUE (AQ), but you may configure custom JMS exception/error queues. Please refer -

    4. How the 850 transaction and 997 transactions will co-relate, on what basis B2B will check?Please refer -
    How 850 matches with corresponding 997
    5. We sent one transaction to supplier and we received a –ve MDN, How can we see that –ve MDN and how we will recognize itOn reports console you may see negative MDN's. Please refer "Inbound Exception Handling Scenarios" -

    6. Are there any different or separate error queues in Oracle B2B?No. By default IP_IN_QUEUE is the error queue.
    7. What are the important B2B tables in 11G
    B2B tables
    Information required about B2B transaction tables in 11g
    It's not recommended to access tables directly. Use InstanceMessageAPI -
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/integration.1111/e10229/b2b_api_imsg.htm#BABFEFCD
    8. In B2B_Instancemessage table we have ID and B2B messageId, Could you please tell us what is the use of this?ID is the unique identifier for the particular table. B2B messageId is actually the unique identifier for a message and used for correlation between requests and response.

  • Assistance required for deploying a validation handler in OIM 11g

    Hi All,
    I wanted to deploy a validation handler in OIM 11g so that I can check that the telephone number that is entered by the user has length of ten and all of them are digits.
    I created a new eclipse workspace called TelephoneValidationHandler on the OIM Host machine. I created a new Java project in the workspace with the name TelephoneValidationHandler. I created a class called TelephoneValidationHandler in this project. Put in the following code in this java file -
    /* TelephoneValidationHandler.java */
    package com.custom;
    import java.io.Serializable;
    import java.util.HashMap;
    import oracle.iam.platform.kernel.ValidationException;
    import oracle.iam.platform.kernel.ValidationFailedException;
    import oracle.iam.platform.kernel.spi.ValidationHandler;
    import oracle.iam.platform.kernel.vo.BulkOrchestration;
    import oracle.iam.platform.kernel.vo.Orchestration;
    public class TelephoneValidationHandler implements ValidationHandler{
              @Override
              public void initialize(HashMap<String, String> arg0) {
              // TODO initialization
              System.out.println("***********************************************************************************");
              System.out.println("************************** Init validate event handler ****************************");
              System.out.println("***********************************************************************************");
              @Override
              public void validate(long processId, long eventId, Orchestration orchestration)
              throws ValidationException, ValidationFailedException {
              System.out.println("************************** Beginning of validation *************************");
              HashMap<String, Serializable> parameters = orchestration.getParameters();
              String telephone = (String) parameters.get("Telephone Number");
              //String regex="[0-9]{10}";
                   if (telephone.length()==10)
                        for(int i=0; i<10; i++)
                             if (Character.isDigit(telephone.charAt(i))){
                                  continue;
                             else
                                  throw new ValidationFailedException();
                        System.out.println("****************** Validated *********************");
              else
                   System.out.println("*************EXCEPTION OCCURRED*******************");
              throw new ValidationFailedException();
              System.out.println("************************** End of validation *************************");
              @Override
              public void validate(long processId, long eventId, BulkOrchestration arg2)
                        throws ValidationException, ValidationFailedException {
              // TODO - N/A
                   System.out.println("************************** INSIDE BULK VALIDATE ***************************");
    I included the files in reference libraries as - right click on the project, click on Build Path -> Configure Build Path -> Add External JARs. In this I selected the jars that were needed to compile the code successfully and i selected them from the place where they exist in the OIM host for eg. C:\Oracle\Middleware\server\platform\iam-platform-kernel.jar path for iam-platform-kernel.jar.
    Now i created a jar file out of this compiled project by right clicking on the project name and clicking Export -> Java -> JAR File. Selected the .classpath and .project files to export as well. Selected first option 1. Export generated class files and resources option. Other three existing options apart from this one which i selected were: 2. Export all output folders for checked projects. 3. Export Java source files and resources 4. Export refactorings for checked projects. So with the 1st option selected, I clicked next and then selected Generate New Manifest file in the final screen and clicked on Finish. Exported this by the name TelephoneValidationHandler.jar to desktop. If I open this jar by changing extension to zip, I see the following folder structure inside it :
    com -> custom -> TelephoneValidationHandler.class
    META-INF -> MANIFEST.INF
    .classpath
    .project
    I created a folder called lib and placed this jar file inside this lib folder. Then outside this lib folder, i placed the plugin.xml file created for this as follows:
    plugin.xml ->
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <oimplugins xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
    <plugins pluginpoint="oracle.iam.platform.kernel.spi.ValidationHandler">
    <plugin class="com.custom.TelephoneValidationHandler" version="1.0" name="TelephoneValidationHandler">
    </plugin>
    </plugins>
    </oimplugins>
    Now I selected the lib folder and plugin.xml and created a new zip file by the name TelephoneValidationHandler.zip which will be used for plugin registration. The zip folder directly inside it has the structure - plugin.xml file and lib folder having the jar file inside it.
    lib -> TelephoneValidationHandler.jar
    plugin.xml
    Now I went to the directory C:\Oracle\Middleware\server\plugin_utility and opened the ant.properties file in that and put in the values as:
    ant.properties ->
    # The installation directory for WLS
    wls.home=C:\\Oracle\\Middleware\\wlserver_10.3
    # The home directory for OIM. In case of shiphome its same as install directory
    oim.home=C:\\Oracle\\Middleware\\Oracle_IDM1\\server
    #login file name with path.
    login.config=C:\\Oracle\\Middleware\\Oracle_IDM1\\server\\config\\authwl.conf
    Now I opened a cmd prompt, traversed to C:\Oracle\Middleware\server\plugin_utility directory and typed in "ant -f pluginregistration.xml register" and executed this command.
    It asked for oim userid - xelsysadm, oim password: Password, server url: t3://oimhost:14000, name of plugin file with path: C:\\temp\\TelephoneValidationHandler.zip
    I got these errors in the redirector.out file in C:\Oracle\Middleware\server\plugin_utility :
    Error in registering the plugin. null
    Error occured during the use of plugin registering utility.
    And this is the detailed description in the redirector.err in C:\Oracle\Middleware\server\plugin_utility :

    But in the end of this run it still does show - BUILD SUCCESSFUL message but it obviously doesn't work properly because after this registration is done, I go to the MDS through command prompt and import the new EventHandlers.xml which I create as shown below:
    EventHandlers.xml ->
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
    <eventhandlers xmlns="http://www.oracle.com/schema/oim/platform/kernel" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.oracle.com/schema/oim/platform/kernel orchestration-handlers.xsd">
    <validation-handler class="com.custom.TelephoneValidationHandler" name="TelephoneValidationHandler" entity-type="User" operation="ANY" order="1002" />
    </eventhandlers>
    This import of EventHandlers.xml is done to the path - /metadata/user/custom
    But after all this, whenever I try creating a new user, I don't even get to see the create user page. Instead I get a NullPointer exception thrown at me.
    Can someone please go through these above steps and tell me if there is any particular step I might be doing wrong??? Maybe the ant.properties is not set properly or maybe the ValidationHandler java code is not implemented properly. However as far as I see I think these steps are correct. I have checked with other posts in this category and followed them. However this error still exists. Please help me.
    Thanks,

    Hey You were right. I changed the plugin.xml file so that the plugin xml tag changed to <plugin pluginclass="..." ..> and now when I ran the ant utility to register the plugin, it did not give any errors. Instead I got a message saying Plugin registered successfully. Also then I went to the dev_oim schema and in that the plugins table and checked it. This time the plugin entry was present in the database in this table.
    Now I imported the EventHandlers.xml file using MDS utility as follows:
    Placed the EventHandlers.xml file in C:/temp/metadata/user/custom/EventHandlers.xml
    The EventHandlers.xml file is as mentioned earlier as follows:
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8'?>
    <eventhandlers xmlns="http://www.oracle.com/schema/oim/platform/kernel" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.oracle.com/schema/oim/platform/kernel orchestration-handlers.xsd">
    <validation-handler class="com.custom.TelephoneValidationHandler" name="TelephoneValidationHandler" entity-type="User" operation="ANY" order="1002"/>
    </eventhandlers>
    Now I changed the weblogic.properties file under C:/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_IDM1/server/bin file to have the entry as follows:
    metadata_from_loc=C:\ \tempThen went to the cmd prompt and navigated to this same folder. Then executed the command: weblogicImportMetadata.bat. It asked the user name : weblogic, password: password and then the url: t3://oimhost:7001
    There were no errors after this executed. I only got End of Import Metadata Script as the message.
    I then executed the "PurgeCache all" command while in the same directory.
    And gave the oimusername: xelsysadm, oimpassword: password and the oim server url: t3://oimhost:14000.
    I got the message :
    PurgeCache Login Success...
    Purging the cache categories:[all] is successful
    After this I logged in to the OIM console and tried to create a user and provided proper telephone number in the field. But when i clicked on Save after giving in these details, I got the following error on the OIM console:
    A system error occurred.
    When i go the oim server logs i see the following lines in it whenever I click on save for a new user:

    oracle.iam.platform.kernel.ValidationFailedException: Event handler TelephoneValidationHandler implemented using class/plug-in com.custom.TelephoneValidationHandler could not be loaded.
    After this error occurred I logged into the database and queried the database with following queries:
    SELECT * FROM dev_oim.orchprocess ORDER BY ID DESC; -> Got the latest entry of process id for operation CREATE and stage as validation-handler but the status of this entry was FAILED.
    Then executed another query as follows to get the event details for the latest process id i got from above query results:
    select * from dev_oim.orchevents WHERE processid=1797 ORDER BY orchorder;The output of this query was:
    "ID"     "NAME"     "STATUS"     "PROCESSID"     "STAGE"     "ORCHORDER"     "RETRY" "CONTEXTID"     "RESULT"
    "7544"     "CreateUserValidationHandler"     "COMPLETED"     "1797"     "validation-handler"     "1"     "0"     "0"     "(BLOB)"
    "7543"     "TelephoneValidationHandler"     "FAILED"     "1797"     "validation-handler"     "2"     "0"     "0"     "(BLOB)"
    I already have pasted my java code initially above. Please guide me if anything wrong in the code or with the EventHandlers.xml file. After importing, I checked again by exporting the EventHandlers.xml file from the location where I had imported it and it did exist in that path.

  • Error while configuring channels in B2B 11g

    Hi b2bgurus,
    I am implementing RosettaNet protocol in 11g. 3C3 Invoice Notification. While configuring channels i got this following error:
    "Messages for this page are listed below.
    Acme_Custom_V02.00_Invoice_Notification_Outbound is not valid. Please correct the following errors.
    Error -: B2B-52255: Certificate alias not specified in the secure delivery channel Acme_Channel.
    Error -: B2B-52326: Transport protocol with https url has to have valid keystore location and password in host "
    I get the above error while I provide http url as input. Do we have a protocol where we can provide https url?
    Please explain i am new to B2B.
    Thanks in advance

    get this error when i provide the url while channel creation. SSL is enabled by using BIG IP. Hence preparation of Key store is not requiredYou understanding is not correct. If you are initiating a SSL connection from Oracle B2B (by giving a HTTPS URL in delivery channel), then you have to configure identity and trust store in your Weblogic servers (SOA server) and you have to configure keystore on Oracle B2B console as well. As I mentioned earlier also refer the blog (http://anuj-dwivedi.blogspot.com/2010/10/enabling-ssl-on-oracle-b2b-11g.html) and perform the required steps.
    If you don't configure a keystore then you CAN NOT initiate a SSL connection from Oracle B2B.
    If you want Big IP to handle SSL then from Oracle B2B you have to initiate a plain HTTP connection and at BIG IP you have to route the request to the respective HTTPS channel (which I am not sure is possible though I am not familier with BIG IP)

  • Transactional Behaviour of Oracle B2B 11g

    Hi Gurus/Anuj,
    Can you please explain Transactional Behaviour in Oracle B2B 11g?
    For a Inbound Interface I have three Mediators(Mediator M1,M2 and M3)
    Partner push a file at file location --> B2B Interface used in M1 ,through B2B Binding,picks the FIle and brings to SOA and--> Give it to M2 and M3.
    I need to perform Error Handling in this case..
    M1 M2 and M3 are Asynchronous,Synch and Synch in nature and I guess M1 will propogate it's transaction to M2 and M2 will propogate it's transaction to M3.
    Routing rules are Sequential..
    Note : Fault policies are applicable to parallel routing rules only. For sequential routing rules, the fault goes back to the caller and it is the responsibility of the caller to handle the fault.
    Am I correct in understanding that :
    B2B Adapter in M1 is the caller and M2 and M3 ,as being Synchronous,will follow M1'a transaction.
    And if a Fault goes into M2 and M3,it will go back to the caller,means M1.
    And in M1 we can have Fault-Handling.
    Also please explain Transactional Behaviour in Oracle B2B 11g?
    Is B2B is Asynchronous in nature?
    Is B2B Adapter a Transactional Adapter?
    What category of JCA adapter is Oracle B2B adapter?
    Thanks

    Hi Vivek,
    Also please explain Transactional Behaviour in Oracle B2B 11g?Oracle B2B depends upon the underlying transport being used for transactional behavior. As far as transaction propagation is concerned, we never had any such need in B2B communication.
    Am I correct in understanding that :
    B2B Adapter in M1 is the caller and M2 and M3 ,as being Synchronous,will follow M1'a transaction.
    And if a Fault goes into M2 and M3,it will go back to the caller,means M1.
    And in M1 we can have Fault-Handling.If you are using AQ interface of B2B adapter with XA Data Source then that adapter can participate in an XA global transaction that can span multiple resources. In this transaction, the application server acts as the coordinating transaction manager with multiple databases (or other resources such as JMS), each of which is involved in a single transaction.
    If you are using JMS interface of B2B adapter with XA Connection factor then that adapter can also participate in an XA global transaction that can span multiple resources.
    If you are using Default (Fabric) interface of B2B adapter then it does not participate in global transaction, rather it starts it's own local transaction and executes in that. So it will totally depend upon the interface you are using with B2B adapter that it will start and propagate a global transaction or will not participate in a global transaction. Moreover, if B2B adapter is starting a transaction and propagating it to a async service then that sync service will start a new local transaction and further sync services may execute in that transaction. As soon as the control comes back to B2B adapter, it will commit the transaction.
    Is B2B is Asynchronous in nature?B2B can be used for both sync and async calls (between partners). B2B is async when communicating with middleware.
    Is B2B Adapter a Transactional Adapter?Explained above
    What category of JCA adapter is Oracle B2B adapter?No special category. It is a specific adapter for Oracle SOA SCA composites to facilitate them in communication with Oracle B2B. You may or may not use this adapter in SOA SCA composites.

  • Task flow exception handler

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to specify a method activity as an exception handler in the adfc-config. The problem is if I specify a view activity or a bounded task flow as the exception handler then it works fine, but if the exception handler is a method activity then it is not recognized. What could be the cause?. I need to execute a method when an exception occurs.
    Version: 11.1.2.0
    Edited by: NewBee on Apr 23, 2013 10:37 AM

    Hi,
    there should not be a problem with this and I recently did the same with JDeveloper 11g R2 (not sure which version of JDeveloper you use because you did not share this information). I assume you just marked the method activity as an exception handler without any other configuration? If so then set a break point to the managed bean method that you access from the method activity to see if it actually stops there. Also note that not all exceptions are handled by the controller exception handler. E.g an exception during render response phase (typically an exception in a managed bean) is not handled by the controller. Also you need to avoid the managed bean that handles the exception to itself throw one. This however you will see when debugging the bean.

  • Exception Handling inside a Multi-Instance Loop

    I would like to see a sample process that demonstrates Exception Handling inside an inline subprocess containing another subprocess with a multi-instance sub-process in parallel. • What is the idea behind Render Response and Exception Handling in TF?

    Dear All,
    While searching for answer for my question, I find it hard to decipher this line.
    task flow exception handling doesn't handle any exception that is in Render Response phase
    I found this several times in many post like this.
    Re: ADF Exception handling (including RENDER RESPNSE PHASE)
    and this
    Re: Exception Handling in TaskFlow
    What's the idea behind exception handling in task flow that is related to JSF/ADF life cycle?
    I can't find a resource on why I should know what phase an exception has been thrown?
    Sorry if my question might be vague/ignorant to others, but I just would like to know the idea from experts around here. :)
    Thanks.
    JDEV 11G PS4

    Hi,
    Render Response is the last lifecycle phase processed during JSF request. The ADF controller has no chance of handling exceptions that occur during this time (example, exception thrown in managed bean) and therefore in its default exception handling implementation ignores this lifecycle phase. As an application developer you don't need to know when an exception is raised. However, if you find that an exception occurs during Render Response and it is not handled by the ADFc declarative exception handler, then you know. You can try and override the framework exception handler as explained here:
    https://blogs.oracle.com/jdevotnharvest/entry/extending_the_adf_controller_exception_handler
    However, better practice is to use try/catch blocks surrounding e.g. calls in a managed bean that could cause exceptions

  • MC.9 and MCY1 and Exception Handling in (Logistics Inf. Sys)LIS

    Hi,
    I want the 'Valuated Stock Value" greater then or equal to zero (>=) appear in the MC.9 report. I can create 'Exception' in MCY1 but am unable to do so. Once I am in MCY1; I choose 'Requirements' then Key Figure 'Valuated Stock Value' then  'Type of condition' is 'Threshold Val. Anal.' is set to '> 0'. However, the report still displays zero values in MC.9. I don't want to display 'Valuated Stock Value' zero to be displayed on the report. Please help.
    Thanks
    Naved

    Hey Chris,
    I got the point for exception handling in weblogic 9.2. We ae using 9.2. It comes up with the concept of shared page flows which means all my unhandled exceptions are thrown to the shared page flow controller. There based on the type of exception, i can forward the request to appropraite page.
    Thanks anywyas,

  • PL/SQL 101 : Exception Handling

    Frequently I see questions and issues around the use of Exception/Error Handling in PL/SQL.  More often than not the issue comes from the questioners misunderstanding about how PL/SQL is constructed and executed, so I thought I'd write a small article covering the key concepts to give a clear picture of how it all hangs together. (Note: the examples are just showing examples of the exception handling structure, and should not be taken as truly valid code for ways of handling things)
    Exception Handling

    1. Understanding Execution Blocks (part 1)
    The first thing that one needs to understand is almost taking us back to the basics of PL/SQL... how a PL/SQL execution block is constructed.
    Essentially an execution block is made of 3 sections...
    +---------------------------+
    |    Declaration Section    |
    +---------------------------+
    |    Statements  Section    |
    +---------------------------+
    |     Exception Section     |
    +---------------------------+
    The Declaration section is the part defined between the PROCEDURE/FUNCTION header or the DECLARE keyword (for anonymous blocks) and the BEGIN keyword.  (Optional section)
    The Statements section is where your code goes and lies between the BEGIN keyword and the EXCEPTION keyword (or END keyword if there is no EXCEPTION section).  (Mandatory section)
    The Exception section is where any exception handling goes and lies between the EXCEPTION keyword at the END keyword. (Optional section)
    Example of an anonymous block...
    DECLARE
      .. declarative statements go here ..
    BEGIN
      .. code statements go here ..
    EXCEPTION
      .. exception handlers go here ..
    END;
    Example of a procedure/function block...
    [CREATE OR REPLACE] (PROCEDURE|FUNCTION) <proc or fn name> [(<parameters>)] [RETURN <datatype>] (IS|AS)
      .. declarative statements go here ..
    BEGIN
      .. code statements go here ..
    EXCEPTION
      .. exception handlers go here ..
    END;
    (Note: The same can also be done for packages, but let's keep it simple)
    2. Execution of the Execution Block
    This may seem a simple concept, but it's surprising how many people have issues showing they haven't grasped it.  When an Execution block is entered, the declaration section is processed, creating a scope of variables, types , cursors, etc. to be visible to the execution block and then execution enters into the Statements section.  Each statment in the statements section is executed in turn and when the execution completes the last statment the execution block is exited back to whatever called it.
    3. Exceptions
    Exceptions generally happen during the execution of statements in the Statements section.  When an exception happens the execution of statements jumps immediately into the exception section.  In this section we can specify what exceptions we wish to 'capture' or 'trap' and do one of the two following things...
    (Note: The exception section still has access to all the declared items in the declaration section)
    3.i) Handle the exception
    We do this when we recognise what the exception is (most likely it's something we expect to happen) and we have a means of dealing with it so that our application can continue on.
    Example...
    (without the exception handler the exception is passed back to the calling code, in this case SQL*Plus)
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  declare
      2    v_name VARCHAR2(20);
      3  begin
      4    select ename
      5    into   v_name
      6    from   emp
      7    where  empno = &empno;
      8    dbms_output.put_line(v_name);
      9* end;
    SQL> /
    Enter value for empno: 123
    old   7:   where  empno = &empno;
    new   7:   where  empno = 123;
    declare
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01403: no data found
    ORA-06512: at line 4
    (with an exception handler, we capture the exception, handle it how we want to, and the calling code is happy that there is no error for it to report)
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  declare
      2    v_name VARCHAR2(20);
      3  begin
      4    select ename
      5    into   v_name
      6    from   emp
      7    where  empno = &empno;
      8    dbms_output.put_line(v_name);
      9  exception
    10    when no_data_found then
    11      dbms_output.put_line('There is no employee with this employee number.');
    12* end;
    SQL> /
    Enter value for empno: 123
    old   7:   where  empno = &empno;
    new   7:   where  empno = 123;
    There is no employee with this employee number.
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    3.ii) Raise the exception
    We do this when:-
    a) we recognise the exception, handle it but still want to let the calling code know that it happened
    b) we recognise the exception, wish to log it happened and then let the calling code deal with it
    c) we don't recognise the exception and we want the calling code to deal with it
    Example of b)
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf
      1  declare
      2    v_name VARCHAR2(20);
      3    v_empno NUMBER := &empno;

    4. Understanding Execution Blocks (part 2)
    Ok, so now we understand the very basics of an execution block and what happens when an exception happens.  Let's take it a step further...
    Execution blocks are not just a single simple block in most cases.  Often, during our statements section we have a need to call some reusable code and we do that by calling a procedure or function.  Effectively this nests the procedure or function's code as another execution block within the current statement section so, in terms of execution, we end up with something like...
    +---------------------------------+
    |    Declaration Section          |
    +---------------------------------+
    |    Statements  Section          |
    |            .                    |
    |  +---------------------------+  |
    |  |    Declaration Section    |  |
    |  +---------------------------+  |
    |  |    Statements  Section    |  |
    |  +---------------------------+  |
    |  |     Exception Section     |  |
    |  +---------------------------+  |
    |            .                    |
    +---------------------------------+
    |     Exception Section           |
    +---------------------------------+
    Example... (Note: log_trace just writes some text to a table for tracing)
    SQL> create or replace procedure a as
      2    v_dummy NUMBER := log_trace('Procedure A''s Declaration Section');

    Likewise, execution blocks can be nested deeper and deeper.
    5. How to continue exection of statements after an exception
    One of the common questions asked is how to return execution to the statement after the one that created the exception and continue on.
    Well, firstly, you can only do this for statements you expect to raise an exception, such as when you want to check if there is no data found in a query.
    If you consider what's been shown above you could put any statement you expect to cause an exception inside it's own procedure or function with it's own exception section to handle the exception without raising it back to the calling code.  However, the nature of procedures and functions is really to provide a means of re-using code, so if it's a statement you only use once it seems a little silly to go creating individual procedures for these.
    Instead, you nest execution blocks directly, to give the same result as shown in the diagram at the start of part 4 of this article.
    SQL> ed
    Wrote file afiedt.buf

    You can see from this that, very simply, the code that we expected may have an exception was able to either handle the exception and return to the outer execution block to continue execution, or if an unexpected exception occurred then it was able to be raised up to the outer exception section.
    6. User defined exceptions
    There are three sorts of 'User Defined' exceptions.  There are logical situations (e.g. business logic) where, for example, certain criteria are not met to complete a task, and there are existing Oracle errors that you wish to give a name to in order to capture them in the exception section.  The third is raising your own exception messages with our own exception numbers.  Let's look at the first one...
    Let's say I have tables which detail stock availablility and reorder levels...
    SQL> select * from reorder_level;

             1          20

             2 Pens                 2

    Now, our Business has told the administrative clerk to check stock levels and re-order anything that is below the re-order level, but not to hold stock of more than 4 times the re-order level for any particular item.  As an IT department we've been asked to put together an application that will automatically produce the re-order documents upon the clerks request and, because our company is so tight-ar*ed about money, they don't want to waste any paper with incorrect printouts so we have to ensure the clerk can't order things they shouldn't.

    That's better.  And now we don't have to use all those nested IF statements and worry about it accidently getting to code that will print the order out as, once one of our user defined exceptions is raised, execution goes from the Statements section into the Exception section and all handling of errors is done in one place.
    Now for the second sort of user defined exception...
    A new requirement has come in from the Finance department who want to have details shown on the order that show a re-order 'indicator' based on the formula ((maximum allowed stock - current stock)/re-order quantity), so this needs calculating and passing to the report...

    Hmm, there's a problem if the person specifies a re-order quantity of zero.  It raises an unhandled exception.
    Well, we could put a condition/check into our code to make sure the parameter is not zero, but again we would be wrapping our code in an IF statement and not dealing with the exception in the exception handler.
    We could do as we did before and just include a simple IF statement to check the value and raise our own user defined exception but, in this instance the error is standard Oracle error (ORA-01476) so we should be able to capture it inside the exception handler anyway... however...
    EXCEPTION
      WHEN ORA-01476 THEN
    ... is not valid.  What we need is to give this Oracle error a name.
    This is done by declaring a user defined exception as we did before and then associating that name with the error number using the PRAGMA EXCEPTION_INIT statement in the declaration section.

  • Delete Statement Exception Handling

    Hi guys,
    I have a problem in my procedure. There are 3 parameters that I am passing into the procedure. I am matching these parameters to those in the table to delete one record at a time.
    For example if I would like to delete the record with the values ('900682',3,'29-JUL-2008') as parameters, it deletes the record from the table but then again when I execute it with the same parameters it should show me an error message but it again says 'Deleted the Transcript Request.....' Can you please help me with this?
    PROCEDURE p_delete_szptpsr_1 (p_shttran_id IN saturn.shttran.shttran_id%TYPE,
    p_shttran_seq_no IN saturn.shttran.shttran_seq_no%TYPE,
    p_shttran_request_date IN saturn.shttran.shttran_request_date%TYPE) IS
    BEGIN
    DELETE FROM saturn.shttran
    WHERE shttran.shttran_id = p_shttran_id
    and shttran.shttran_seq_no = p_shttran_seq_no
    and trunc(shttran_request_date) = trunc(p_shttran_request_date);
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Deleted the Transcript Request Seq No (' || p_shttran_seq_no || ') of the Student (' || p_shttran_id ||') for the requested date of (' || p_shttran_request_date ||')');
    COMMIT;
    EXCEPTION WHEN NO_DATA_FOUND THEN
    DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Error: The supplied Notre Dame Student ID = (' || p_shttran_id ||
    '), Transcript Request No = (' || p_shttran_seq_no || '), Request Date = (' || p_shttran_request_date || ') was not found.');
    END p_delete_szptpsr_1;
    Should I have a SELECT statement to use NO_DATA_FOUND ???

    A DELETE statement that deletes no rows (just like an UPDATE statement that updates no rows) is not an error to Oracle. Oracle won't throw any exception.
    If you want your code to throw an exception, you'll need to write that logic. You could throw a NO_DATA_FOUND exception yourself, i.e.
    IF( SQL%ROWCOUNT = 0 )
    THEN
      RAISE no_data_found;
    END IF;If you are just going to catch the exception, though, you could just embed whatever code you would use to handle the exception in your IF statement, i.e.
    IF( SQL%ROWCOUNT = 0 )
    THEN
      <<do something about the exception>>
    END IF;In your original code, your exception handler is just a DBMS_OUTPUT statement. That is incredibly dangerous in real production code. You are relying on the fact that the client has enabled output, that the client has allocated a large enough buffer, that the user is going to see the message, and that the procedure will never be called from any piece of code that would ever care if it succeeded or failed. There are vanishingly few situations where those are safe things to rely on.
