Exception in native code causing Tomcat to crash

I am running a java servlet on Tomcat and have noticed that it has been unexpectedly terminating quite a bit over the last month or so. Yesterday it happened twice, citing an exception in native code outside the VM. I really have no idea where to start debugging this. Below is what is in the log file that is generated when it terminates. Does anybody know why something like this would be happening? Looking at the stack trace, it looks like a strange place to be terminating? Has anybody come accross anything like this? If you need more information, let me know!
Thanks!!!
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.

The stack trace points to an error in ntdll.dll, the NT system calls library, while it being used by Sun's standard ODBC driver.
There are two unfixed bugs against 1.4 in this area. One suggests incorrect usage of the driver by client code. The other suggests that the current Java library has poor handling of exceptions in system code.

http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4641011
The latter does not explort the actual cause of exceptions - they will have something to do with your Windows configuration. Applying the latest NT service packs might help. Unfortunately as the bug report indicates, this issue will not be fixed in 1.4.

  • Null pointer exception in native code

    Hi
    We are running JRockit 1.4.2 and we are having a lot of crashes recently. All of them have this error
    Error Message: Null pointer exception in native code
    Signal info : si_signo=11, si_code=1
    but the location of the crash differs. Our last one occured in java.util.Hashmap.get(). Another common element is that they appear to occur after deserialisation.
    Has anyone else had similar problems?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

    You would need to get BEA support, after verifying you are on a supported configuration (http://edocs.bea.com/jrockit/jrdocs/suppPlat/supp_142.html).
    Otherwise you may need to try update 10, or use Sun JVM.

  • JDBC ODBC bridge (JDK 1.4) exception in native code

    I am using jdk 1.4 on windows 98. I have written this simple java program which uses jdbc odbc bridge to connect to an MS Access 2000 db.
    An exception in native code is thrown only when I use createStatement with scrollable resultset. If I use createStatement() with default forward only resultset type, then program works.
    import java.sql.*;
    public class Select
         public static void main(String[] args)
              try
                   Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
                   Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:shopping");
                   Statement stmt = con.createStatement(ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_INSENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_READ_ONLY);
                   String query = "SELECT * from products";
                   ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
                   while (rs.next())
                        String s = rs.getString("name");
                        float n = rs.getFloat("price");
                        System.out.println(s + " " + n);
              catch (ClassNotFoundException e)
                   System.out.println("Class Not Found: " + e.getMessage());
              catch (SQLException e)
                   System.out.println("SQL Exception: " + e.getMessage());
    The program produces this error with scrollable resultset:

    Is there any problem with jdbc odbc bridge driver?

    No. This is not a bug. Not all databases support (or have to support) all types of resultsets. It is your responsibility to ensure that a particular resultset is supported before you use it. That said, one would definitely expect a more descriptive error message in case of inadvertant use.

  • Calling existing C++ dll from native code causes an ACCESS_VIOLATION

    Hi everyone,
    I'm having issues creating a Java app to call an existing c++ DLL. I've done extensive searching for a solution and found lots of goodies, but nothing to fix my problem yet.
    I've gone through the JNI tutorial and created my java class, used javah, and created my native code according to the tutorial.
    I'm new to dealing with DLLs so I'm not sure if there are some steps that I'm not taking.
    The issue comes when I run the program. I get an EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.
    the DLL I'm trying to call makes a call to a device on the USB port. I also have the source code and header files for the DLL but thought it would be easier to just have to deal with the already built DLL.
    After putting some print statements in the native function, the violation comes when I try to call the function in the external DLL. The DLL itself loads correctly (as far as I know).
    Here my native method that will load the external dll. I got the code to call the DLL method from:
    http://goff.nu/techarticles/development/cpp/calldll.html
    JNIEXPORT void JNICALL
    Java_OCPMControl_OCPMSetPixelCount (JNIEnv *env, jobject obj, jint pixelCount)
    //load the dll
    HINSTANCE ocpmSerialDLL = LoadLibrary("OCPMSerialDLL");
    /* get pointer to the function in the dll*/
    FARPROC myDLLFunction = GetProcAddress(HMODULE(ocpmSerialDLL), "OCPMSetPixelCount");
    /* Define the Function in the DLL for reuse. This is just prototyping
    * the dll's function. A mock of it. Use "stdcall" for maximum compatibility.
    typedef void (__stdcall * FUNC)(enum ePixelNum);
    FUNC MyFunction;
    MyFunction = FUNC(myDLLFunction);
    printf("Calling function\n");
    /* The actual call to the function contained in the dll */
    MyFunction(PIXEL256);
    /* Release the Dll */
    FreeLibrary(ocpmSerialDLL);
    When I run the program, I get the following error:
    An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) occurred at PC=0x182

    Is there something else I have to do to tell the JVM that the external DLL call isn't an Access Violation?
    Would it be easier to use the source files instead?
    Thanks to anyone who can help me out here!
    Scott Campbell

    Thanks,
    The problem has been solved. I wasn't linking the dll properly to access the external DLL and thus, my native DLL was looking for methods that it didn't know how to find. which was easily solved by adding a few options when creating my native dll.
    Here is the link I found to solve the problem incase anyone else has issues like this. It is regarding implicit v.s. explicit linking to external DLLs in using visual C++.

  • Drill down/up on Webi causes TOMCAT to crash

    Hi,
    I have installed BOE XI 3.1 on Solaris 10 <SPARC> on Solaris zones with Oracle 11g R2 database and Oracle 11g R2 32 bit client.  This is the DEV environment. My client was given a .biar file which had a custom built sample universe and some reports to go with it. Now that I have the DEV environment up and running, i migrated the contents of the .biar into DEV. I can open all the reports and refresh data. But whenever I hit the drill button and try to drill, it causes my TOMCAT to crash and I have to manually start tomcat again in order to connect to my environment. It does retrieve a fair amount of data. Are there any settings that I need to change for the webi processing server/TOMCAT? This keeps happening on a regular basis and I have no clue why it crashes. Can anyone help, please!
    Thanks.

    is that where the JVM parameters are set (env.sh)?
    Yes, that's correct. However, the file needs to be sourced again for the changes to take effect. Preferably, using a new terminal. I am sure you must have done already but, just in case.
    Since the standard steps don't seem to help, I am sharing what I would have done if I were you.
    If this were a 32 bit system then, I would probably upgrade the JDK once to see if this helps (and probably Tomcat as well). And for a 64 bit system, I would try installing 64 bit versions of both Tomcat and JDK.
    If still it crashes, I would open a support ticket with SAP and pull them in. BTW, are there any changes in ine log messages?
    Cheers

  • JVM dies when JNI native code causes a SIGABRT from assertions

    Hi,
    I am wondering whether there is a way to prevent the JVM from dying when the JNI native code hits an assertion.
    #include "NativeTest.h"
    #include <assert.h>
    JNIEXPORT jstring JNICALL Java_NativeTest_sayHello (JNIEnv *env, jobject thisobject, jstring js)
    assert(0);
    return js;
    Calling this code from Java through JNI causes a SIGABRT when assert(0) is hit. This causes the java program to terminate. Is there a way for the JVM to recover from the SIGABRT from the native code?

    An assertion is only one way that can happen.
    So to prevent the VM from exiting - don't run native code. The safe way to execute OS native library is to do the following.
    1. Wrap the library in an executable.
    2. Create a communications API for the executable.
    3. Manage the executable via Java Runtime.exec/ProcessBuilder.
    4. Talk to the executable using the communications API from 2 in the java code.
    The above is safe because if the library exits it exits the executable, not the VM.

  • Java application crashes due to some problem in native  code

    Hi All
    I have a Java application that calls APIs in a 3rd party DLL(I don't have access to its source code or logs) through my VC++ DLL(Win32) that acts as the wrapper DLL.
    The Application has many functionalities and is based on multithreading (both on Java layer as well as C++ layer). Most of the functionalities are working , but when I try to close the application, it crashes.
    Moreover the crashing occurs inconstently, sometimes it does not crash. Instead of showing any debug information , it simply creates a error file with disassembly code that I am not able to understand.
    Though the error seems like an java error, but actually it seems to be due to native code. I have try catch blocks in my code and also implemented settranslator functionality to get hold of structured/C exceptions. But still I am not able to catch any exceptions.
    I am pasting the the contents of the file here:

    The JAVA Application during initialisation establishes a connection with the host server for various devices. For each of the device it establishes a separate connection and keeps listening on these connections using multithreading.
    During App close, we need to close each of these connections one by one for each device.
    The opening /closing of connection is done by 3rd party DLL and call to there APIs is done through a C++ Wrapper DLL that I have built between the Java layer and their DLL.
    When we close the Application, I am always able to close the connections on the first 2 devices. Then all of a sudden it crashes either for the 3rd device conn. close or for the 4th one. The code is the same for all the devices . That too sometimes it just goes fine without crashing. If its a null pointer exception, why is it that it crashes on some occassions and not in other times. More importantly, why is it that it does not fail for the first 2 devices , but fails for the 3rd or 4th device connection close?
    Can please anyone help me. Please suggest me as to how I can determine the cause of the error.
    And is this error really coming in ntdll.dll or is it getting caused of my dll?

    The opening /closing of connection is done by 3rd party DLL and call to there APIs is done through a C++ Wrapper DLL that I have built between the Java layer and their DLL.The specific error indicates a pointer/memory problem.
    The first place that is likely is in your code.
    The second most likely place for the cause is because you are using the third party library incorrectly. For example before exiting you are supposed to clean up resources and you are not doing so.
    As a remote possibility, much less likely that either of the above, there is a bug in jnative or in the 3rd party library.

  • JVM Crashes in Native Code - JDK#1.4.2_10 for solaris-sparc

    Hi,
    We are facing irregular but quite frequent JVM crash in our Test environment. From the stacktrace it seems that JVM is crashing inside the native code. Can anyone help me in finding the cause of this problem please?

  • Signal 11 Causing Tomcat crash

    Really hoping that someone might be able to help us with this. We are experiencing Signal 11 crashes on our tomcat server. We have tried almost every configuration that I can think of and we are still getting these crashes at least once a week, sometimes twice a day. Unfortunately we can not reproduce this anywhere except production. Here is the current setup:
    RedHat 7.3
    Kernel: 2.4.18-3smp
    Memory: 2.5GB
    JDK: SDK 1.4.2
    Tomcat 4.0.6
    We are using mod_jk to talk to the Apache server (2.0.x) and the native DB2 jdbc driver to talk to our DB2 databases. We have also tried Tomcat 4.1.29 and Sun's JDK v. 1.4.1_01 and IBM's 1.4.1 on RH AS 2.1. We are passing the following settings to the JVM: -Xms512m -Xmx1024m.
    We have also tried running this on three different boxes to try and isolate hardware failures, but all machines experience crashes in the same way.
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    What architecture are you running on? I /think/ by default on Linux (and Windows) on Intel is 256k? (Someone please correct me.) If you don't have that many threads, try -Xss512k ; I don't know if this will help, but it possibly could help depending on what is happening at the native level. Did you have any luck using the 100% Java JDBC driver?

  • XA  jDriver for Oracle problem : Getting native code exception

    Hi,
    I'm getting a native code exception which causes the Weblogic server to crash when

    Any idea what's going on here ?

    Hi,
    I'm getting a native code exception which causes the Weblogic server
    to
    crash when
    using XA drivers for transaction with two oracle databases. Myapplication
    uses RMI
    and threads.
    I'm using BEA's jDriver for Oracle running under Weblogic server 6.1sp1
    talking
    to Oracle 8.1.6. The OS is Solaris 2.8.
    In middle of the program execution it's giving this problem. I'm
    using
    jdk131 in
    solaris platform.
    Any idea what's going on here ?
    Thanks,

  • How to catch Exception inside the native code

    Hello,
    I have an error of unexpected exception during running native code,it occurrs randomly, not every time.
    the error text is:
    An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x9535F359
    Function=acy_match+0xC6
    Library=/usr/lib/libNegativeMatcher.so
    I don't know what exactly cause the crash inside the c code but I think it might be memory leak . What I'm concern is that this exception cause program termination.
    I have few questions:
    1. This exception cause the java program to end. How can I catch this exception and avoid program termination?
    2. What is 0xC6 in:
    Function=acy_match+0xC6
    and PC=0x9535F359?
    Can it help me track the problem inside the native code?
    Thanks for your help.

    An unexpected exception has been detected in native
    code outside the VM.
    Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0x9535F359
    Function=acy_match+0xC6
    Library=/usr/lib/libNegativeMatcher.so
    I don't know what exactly cause the crash inside the
    c code but I think it might be memory leak . What
    I'm concern is that this exception cause program
    termination.I doubt it is a memory leak (actually I am rather certain that another error would occur if it was just memory exhaustion.)
    I have few questions:
    1. This exception cause the java program to end. How
    can I catch this exception and avoid program
    termination?I suspect that would be a really bad idea. That particular signal very likely indicates that you have corrupted memory. Continuing is unlikely to work.
    2. What is 0xC6 in:
    As a guess it is an offset into the compiled code which indicates where the memory problem was detected.
    That it unlikely to help you with a pointer/memory problem because that is where it was detected and not where it happened. By comparing the source you might be able to determine what was bad and then trace it back.

  • EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION exception has been detected in native code outs

    Here is my error :
    # An EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
    # Program counter=0x502032cf
    Problem I have though is the app will run fine on 1 PC, but the same installation on another causes this. OS == NT ( i don't know too much about NT)
    Not really sure what to do about this one, really grateful for any advice.
    Thx

    It most windows JNI code an ACCESS_VIOLATION indicates a memory problem: buffer overwrite, underwrite, dereference a null pointer, etc.
    I would suggest going through the JNI code and put in more error checking: return values from methods, check for non-null input params, etc.

  • The crash happened outside the java virtual machine in native code

    Hi,
    I have a biometric device with which I am given some C++ dlls. I am trying to call methods inside these using java (jna). I am loading the dll "zkemsdk.dll+" as follows:
    zkemkeeper INSTANCE1 = (zkemkeeper)Native.loadLibrary("zkemsdk", zkemkeeper.class);//zkemsdk is the dll, I am loading the dll here.
    Then, I am calling the function:
    zkemkeeper.INSTANCE1.Z_Connect_NETEX("ip address",4370);//Z_Connect_NETEX is a function inside zkemsdk.dll
    This returns me true or false based on whether am connected to the biometric device or not.Thus I am able to invoke this method without issues. But for other methods inside the dll, run time exception is thrown in console:
    Can someone help me resolve this issue. ??? Following is the content of the log file generated.

  • GUI crashes when calling native code..

    Hi,
    I have interfaced to an existing C program using the Java Native Interface and I am controlling the C program using a GUI. The problem is that everytime I click on the button to call the native method, the GUI crashes... The bizarre thing is that the C code seems to actually execute properly and no exceptions are thrown..
    Anyone come across this problem?
    /john

    Hi,
    Thanks for the replies...
    The GUI completely disappears. No error file is generated. No exceptions are thrown. Here it is in more detail..
    The C code is invoked using the java native interface. The C code converts a MIDI file to a text file. It is normally run in DOS and accepts two parameters. You would run it in DOS normally as follows:
    mf2t Example1.mid Example1.txt.
    In the GUI I select the MIDI file and specify the output file (Example1.txt). I then pass these two parameters to the C code. The C code originally used argc and argv to accept the parameters. I replaced these with "fileArray" and "parameter"... "mf2t" replaces "main" in the native code...
    On the java side the code looks like this:
    static public native boolean mf2t(String s6, String s7);
    public String infile; // Input MIDI file
    public String textOut; // Output text file
    private void MIDIButtonActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {
    Object target=evt.getSource();
    if(target == MIDIButton) {
    if(mf2t(infile,textOut)){
    InfoLabel.setText("MIDI to text conversion complete");
    The code is built on the C side into a DLL using MS Visual Studio.
    On the C side the code looks something like this:
    static char *fileArray[5];
    static int argument=3;
    static char midiArray[25];
    static char txtArray[25];
    void mf2t(int argument,char * fileArray[]);
    // Entry point to native C code is here
    JNIEXPORT jboolean JNICALL
    Java_MainWindow_mf2t (JNIEnv *env, jobject j1, jstring midi, jstring txt)
    const jbyte *midiFile;
    const jbyte *txtFile;
    midiFile=(*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env,midi, NULL);
    txtFile=(*env)->GetStringUTFChars(env,txt, NULL);
    // The lines above just convert the java string into a C equivalent..
