Exceptions thrown by methods in classes

Hi all,
Just curios why the PrintWriter method close() is not declared as throwing IOException, although in JDK 5.0, PrintWriter implements Closable interface. And IOException is a checked exception.

Right.
No I remebered that the "implements" relationship allows for the set of checked exceptions to be narrowed in the throws clause. This is because when a client is using the interface it MUST catch all the checked exceptions, even if the implementation does not actually throw all of them.
This is true also when implementing abstract classes.

    I use a scenario R/3 IDOC -> XI -> Email. It is working, however the email is send 4 times.
    I have an error within a communication channel.

  • Find all unchecked exceptions thrown by method?

    Dear all,
    I am writing critical code that must be correct. Thus, I wish to know that I have not overlooked any important unchecked exceptions. I am aware that the distinction between unchecked and checked exceptions is controversial, and I know the difference between these types of exceptions.
    I would like to see for each function a list of all possible exceptions a method can throw. Preferably I would like a tool to do this for me, but I would write something myself if there is a reasonably simple way to do it.
    More precisely, I would like to be able to define the set of "unchecked" exceptions myself, e.g., I would put down NullPointerException as "unchecked", but I would let IOException be checked (in my particular application, not in general). In general, this would however be a very nice language feature that could perhaps be a compromise in the (un)checked exceptions-controversy. Each programmer could define an "unchecked"-filter. Perhaps it would best be viewed as a kind of lint.
    In any case, I have not found any tool, and it seems I can not do it myself with reflection, since it only gives access to declared exceptions, i.e., if the JDK-programmer decided not to put IOException in the signature of a method, then reflection can not see that the method may throw such an exception.
    Does anybody know how to do this?

    I have a web service created in JAVA.. The modules throw certain exceptions and i am having auto generated JSP created from the WSDL's , which i can obviously edit. i want to catch these exceptions in this JSP page.. Any clue how to do this?

You can however put any logging or even an if statement into your JSP to display the error or control the flow based on the error.

    Suppose I have a class CodeDAO which has 2 methods who both throw SQLException

The calling classes should not be responsible for logging/recovery etc. It should be done in the DAO classes themselves and the DAO method should return an appropriate message/code to the consumer tier classes indicating the status of the transaction.     Your tool is wrong if it says to never throw Exception.  This was a common recommendation back in the .NET v1 days but has long since been thrown out.  It is perfectly fine to use Exception when you have a general exception that provides no information
    that an application can use to make an informed opinion.
    The general rules of exception throwing is to throw the most specific exception that makes sense. If there is no specific exception that applies and it would be useful for the caller to handle the exception differently than other exceptions then creating
    a custom exception type is warranted.  Otherwise throwing Exception is reasonable. As an example you might have an application that pulls back product data given an ID. There is no built in exception that says the ID is invalid. However an invalid ID
    is something that an application may want to handle differently than, say, an exception about the product being discontinued.  Therefore it might make sense to create an ItemNotFoundException exception that the application can react to.
    Conversely there is no benefit in having different exception types for disk full and disk quota met. The application will respond the same in either case.

    Try to implement the logic that what ever you are performing in the BO mehtod in a FM and in the FM you have tab with name EXECPTIONS define the execption in that tab.Now in the BO method you call this FM  and if the exception occurs by using RAISE you can raise the exception in the FM and based on the number of exceptions your sy-subrc value will be set
    so when sys-subrc is not eq 0 then pass a value back t the workflow container., I think this will work.

    We notice a quite a few things are significant slower when compared to the results based on HotSpot.
    Turning on the Xverbose:exceptions=debug, we see lots of exceptions thrown, the following is just 1 example of many (with different kinds of stack trace too). And we believe they are the main cause to the slowdown. Can you help explain why we're getting the exceptions and how to resolve them? We did not see the exceptions from running HotSpot JVM, and looks like there is no need/way to turn on the exception traces from HotSpot HVM so we assume there were no exceptions thrown when we ran our applications based on HotSpot JVM. Interestingly, even with the exceptions looks like our applications still function ok, that make me to think is it this something internal to JRockit?

    Turning on exception printouts with -Xverbose:exceptions will print out all exceptions being thrown, whether they are caught or not. It is not unusal for programs to cause execptions as part of their normal execution and to catch them silently. -Xverbose:exceptions is primarily a debugging and supportability tool.
    Thus, it is highly likely that the same number of exceptions are thrown when running with Hotspot, but there are no debugging tools available for Hotspot that will show these exceptions.
    To analyze the slow down you are seeing, I would suggest that you do a JRA profiler recording (part of JRockit Mission Control) and see if there is anything in that data that looks suspicious (such as long GC pauses or method bottlenecks).

  • Exception in super and sub class

    when super class method throws an exception then sub class overridden method can throws child exception but when we talk about constructor why we throws parent class exception in derived class constructor????

    However, there are a couple of general rules for checked exceptions (such as IOException, SQLException, etc.). As you're studying these, keep in mind that a throws clause is a contract that promises what the method will not do. In particular, it doesn't promise that the method will throw those exceptions.     3. When any method or constructor, A, invokes any other method or constructor, B, then any checked exception declared to be thrown by B must be either caught or declared to be thrown by A. If A catches or throws a parent of an exception thrown by B, then he's also implicitly catching or throwing the one that B mentions.
