Excess Noise in Garageband on my Macbook.

On my iMac G5 I used to plug my guitar straight into the line in port with Garageband. I could record with minimal noise even with distortion effects.
But on my Macbook it is a different story, with exactly the same settings the Macbook is getting a shocking amount of noise. It does this even when the cable isn't even plugged in which means it isn't the guitar.
I purchased the Griffin iMic which helped to quell the sound slightly, but not much. Why should the MacBook be getting more noise than the iMac G5?
Is this a characteristic of Intel Macs? Do I have a deffective soundcard?
If it is something which isn't to do with faulty hardware, Is there anything I can do to quieten it down?
Please help me community.
Thanks.

I have the same trouble with my macbook, I think it is something to do with the magnetic power adapter and the magnet inside the computer. The noise is much worse when the power adapter is plugged in but is still at an unacceptable level for recording when not plugged in.
I think it is simply a design flaw with the macbooks... unfortunate.
My question was whether or not a usb/firewire audio interface or a product such as lightsnake (http://www.soundtech.com/lightsnake/index.asp) would help.
Does Anyone Know?

The new version of GarageBand is only compatible with 10.9 and above.
If your Mac can run MacOS X 10.6.8, it probably can be upgraded to Yosemite, if you don't have to stick to Snowleopard for other reasons.
Is it possible to still get the older version?
Amazon or eBay are still selling iLife '11 installer disks, and you could reinstall GarageBand from these DVDs. But it will be expensive.
Have you checked your backups, if you can restore GarageBand from a backup?
OR, can I get another copy of the startup CD that came with my computer so that I can reinstall GarageBand?
Sometimes the AppleStore Support will replace missing installer CDs for a fee.

  • I am not able to update iPhoto, iMovie and garageband on my macbook pro. these three apps came installed with ilife suite.

I am unable to update iphoto, imovie, and Garageband on my Macbook Pro.  I understand that these apps are part of ilife suite.  Purchased Macbook at Best Buy January 2012.  All software is updated.  I recieve message asking me to sign into account that I purchased these apps from.  I am signed in , however I did not purchase these apps they came on Macbook.  I also tried deleting Garageband and re-installing it. Now Garageband says accept but Macbook will not accept.  Anyone else have this problem and were you able to resolve it.

The fact that they were preinstalled is why they are supposed to appear in the Purchased pane, in a temporary area labeled Purchases, for you to accept. Not doing so soon after you got the Mac has messed this process up.
    To get things back on track properly try these steps;
    Updating Pre-installed iLife apps -
1 - Log out and quit iTunes and the Mac App Store (MAS)
2 - Go to System Prefs/Users & Groups/~user/Password and enter the Apple ID connected to your iTunes/Mac App Store account. Close Sys Prefs
    3 - Delete /Mac HD/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/adoption.plist
    4 - Reboot your Mac
5 - Open Mac App Store
6 - Go to the Purchased pane and Accept the three iLife apps. Enter iTunes/MAS username/password if prompted.

  • My thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop

my thunderbolt display makes a noise when plugged into my macbook pro laptop. It sounds like an electronic noise which doesn't come through the speakers. Any advice how to eliminate this?

Could be a poor ground.  Try plugging the monitor directly into the wall (no power strip) and see what happens.

  • MacBook Pro fans making excessive noise?

So here's my problem: I play Minecraft on my 13" MacBook Pro (2011), and whenever I do, the fans start up.  For about 5-10 seconds, everything is fine. Then the fans start running (excessively loud) and the laptop becomes very hot. I know a lot of people's MacBook Pros have noisy fans, but is there any way to keep the laptop cool while doing tasks on my laptop (the fans usually start going while playing Minecraft or doing work for long periods of time.)? Would a cooling pad help? Is there any way to stop the fans from starting and heating up?
    Thanks!
    - Alex

Have you done an SMC reset? That can sometimes effect the fans running: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When the fans are going full tilt, bring up Activity Monitor, and see if there's a particular program or programs that are driving high CPU usage.
Confirm that your system thinks it has 4GB memory, and that some didn't fail.
Check your print queue to ensure that there are no print jobs that didn't complete printing. OS X can put alot of effort into trying to reprint them.
    That's just a few ideas ...

  • Since Yosemite upgrade, high pitch noise creating case vibration on MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009) (on watching the keynote online)

    Hi,
Great work on Yosemite, great new design as well.
Several problems since the Yosemite upgrade though :
        - When playing high pitch noise (watching the keynote for example), the speakers make the case around it vibrate. This was not happening under Mavericks and previous OSXs.
        - This page (post editing) does not allow the right click (works everywhere else as far as I'm aware).
        - when changing the volume, I have now the noise feedback when clicking on shift+volume up/down and no sound when clicking on volume up/down on my keyboard (was the inverse before).
        - The keyboard light was stuck in off, had to restart the computer.
More general problems (covering the last OSX since introduction of 10.9) :
        - lack of possibility of choosing for a 3x3 set of desktops as it was before (the new mission control only allow us to have a horizontal set of several desktops)
        - Notifications cannot be turned off automatically when being in full screen. (only options for auto turn off given are "display is sleeping" oO and when "mirroring on another display" -> meh, would have prefer when having an app in full screen)
    System :
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,3
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Memory: 8 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.48f2

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • Excessive noise from disc burner

I am hearing what sounds like excessive fan noise(?) when burning a DVD. I haven't noticed this until today. I have used the system quite a lot over the two years I've had the 24".
I also hear it when playing a disc on VLC media player, but strangely all is silent when I play the same disc on the Apple DVD Player (these are both software, right?). The mechanical hardware built in the iMac is Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J.
If it is fan wear(?) or whatever, why can't I hear it when using the Apple DVD Player?
Whatever it is, is it likely to cause serious internal problems, and, should I expect a heavy repair bill?
    Thanks in advance..

Some disc make more noise because they are slightly unbalanced, or possible a bit warped. The difference in sound can also vary based on how fast the disc is spinning. Different types of discs and different apps can use different spin rates in the optical drive.
    If it is fan wear(?)
If it only happens when you insert a disc into the optical drive, it is probably not the fans.
With Intel Macs, you can get an external FireWire or USB 2.0 optical drive. OWC has good options.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
I have an old USB 2.0 optical DVD/CD drive (read-only). It works for DVD movies and even booting up the iMac with a Mac OS X installation disc. I usually use it in read-only situations (such as watching a movie or installing software), instead of the built-in optical drive. I use the built-in optical drive when I need to burn something... reduces wear on the built-in drive.

  • Strange noise from right sight of macbook (please listen to video to judge)

strange sounds coming from right side of macbook pro. To me it seems like something is spinning or vibrates, although it sometimes seems that it has something to do electronics: by touching the macbook the sound changes pitch...just look to the vid to see and hear what I mean:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3MKlilX1pI
The difficult part of it: it only occurs 1 or 2 times per month...
so when I send it back to apple service, they can't do anything as long as the problem doesn't appear 'right there right then'. 1 in a 100 that thats going to happen...if someone knows about this problem, please comment so I can ask apple to take a better look at a specific part of my macbook.
ps: Apple service has seen the vids, but they say that thay can't take action as long it's not clear what is causing it.
Anybody any idea what is going on?
    - at the time there wasn't a cd/dvd inside
    - one vid is while using "greater performance" videocard the other isn't.

Sounds to me like the sort of noise you get when an audio turntable or the like has an earth problem of some kind.
I'd say electronic, not mechanical, and probably , as Retired Engineer hints, playing through the speaker.
When you touch the aluminium body of the computer it appears to reduce the sound. When you touch the glass trackpad it does not.
Does the sound ever occur if you have the computer attached to the power adaptor with the earthed three pin power cord attached?
If it is happening and you then plug headphones into the audio output socket, can you still hear it? If not then, then can you hear it through the headphones themselves?
Another possibility might be an environment with a very high level of static electricity, I guess, with your body providing an "earth" when you touch the metal body of the computer.
    Cheers

Hi Rod thanx for the response, some answers:
I never use the earthed three pin power cord, could that be the problem? End if so does it come standard on MBPro's or is something wrong with mine?
If it accures I will put my headphones in and as others mentioned I will mute my audio, just to find out more about the problem.
High Level of static, this could be the case since inside my house I'm walking on 'crocs' http://www.crocs.com. But then it also accurred on while I was at work (and defenitely not wearing corcs )
still I have doubt that it is the speakers:
when you move the macboek, the noise drops and after a few seconds it comes back again
when you push the MBP surface the frequentie (pitch) changes rather then 'on' or 'off' as you would aspect with statics..

  • Noise (fan and/or drive) MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 160GBHD

    I recently acquired a MacBook 2.4 Intel Core 2 Duo 2GB 160GBHD.
It is always making noise, (quite obvious, fan noise).
    It is annoying.
Compared to my iBook G4, this thing is rather noisy.
Quite honestly, I never hear anything from my iBook G4 unless it's required to perform multiple tasks over a period of time and only then the fans ramp up.
    Is this normal?

This may be normal, but try this before making a final judgement:
    1. Go to System Preferences/Energy Saver/Options and set it to Automatic.
    2. Download SMC Fan Control for free:
    http://homepage.mac.com/holtmann/eidac/software/smcfancontrol2/index.html
    And set to 3000 cycles.
That done, see if the sound shows any improvement.

  • Funny noises, beachballs and application hangs (MacBook Pro 2010)

    Hi,
My late 2010 model 17 inch MacBook Pro frequently makes an odd noise (seeming to come from the left side) when I am using it.  It sounds a bit like a click or a whirr (or both); if this happens application I am using will often hang for seconds to a few minutes, before the noise recurs and everything goes back to normal.  It is quite irritating!
Interestingly, the Finder itself doesn't crash and I can switch to other applications; these also hang if I try to use them but all is restored when the noise happens again.
The most obvious app is iTunes, which will stop playing music when noise happens then restart as soon as the problem rectifies itself.
Any suggestions as to what this could be?  It's been happening for years now and my machine still seems ok
    Thanks

You have a failing hard disk   BACKUP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATLY. Assuming you are using an MBP with a physical disk and not an SSD (which is most like the case for a 2010 model MPB)  then the clicking noise you are hearing is the HDD equivilant of a stroke.  The reader head hits a piece of "interesting" data, flips out, smacks against the axle of the disk, and then the disk has to spin up again,  causing the application hangs.   When the disk is going through this, no data can move in or out.  The reason finder still works is that some data is pre-loaded.  You may still have functionality for a few seconds even after the disk quit working.  Since these are tiny blips in data, the finder still works.   Applications, which are constantly passing data, hang and wait for the data.    Usually, if you go into the system.log file, you will see a stack of I/O errors stemming from the disk/sector in question.    Again, BACK UP YOUR DATA IMMEDIATLY and take the laptop to a genius bar.
The Whirring noise you hear is probably the disk moter spinning up during this process.

  • Spinning noise on startup with my MacBook Pro.

I've had my MacBook Pro for about a year and a half now and it recently started making a noise when it starts up, from sleep mode or power off mode, that sounds like something's spinning faster and faster; like a car switching gears if you keep your foot on the gas. After about ten seconds it goes back to normal and you can't hear a thing. It's embarrassing when I open it during a lecture, or in the library, and people around me look at me because it is the only thing you can hear. I'm just afraid because last time my hard drive crashed. I just want to know if it's a hardware problem because it's deifinitely not normal since everyone around me has Macs and none of them make this sound.

That usually means a RAM issue.  Take out the RAM modules and make certain that the connections are clean and reinstall them, making certain that they are well seated.
Have you recently installed new RAM?  If so it may be faulty.
If no change you may run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
That may pick up some problems.
    Ciao.

  • How to get rid of hiss when/noise/static using EarPods on MacBook Air'13 (and other macs)?

I still haven't found any solution to that and i love my EarPods. That's a big discomfort, especially when listening at low volume, which i do quite often.

I think what you are hearing is just air flowing around in the room causing a very similar white noise, I noticed this myself when using the "EarPods" on my Macbook Pro. It could also be caused by a damaged Audio port or the Earpods audio jack itself. Twisting the jack while inside the port may help if this is the case, but I would first highly recommend trying to wear the Earpods and then covering your ears and see if the noise goes away, as twisting could potentially cause damage. If covering your ears seems to remove the sound, then it would most likely just be airflow. If neither work and persist, I would then recommend trying to return the Earpods, or getting a new In/Out for your Mac. I am experienced with music production and sound design so if none of these solutions work, please let me know. ~SirFox

already drag the song at garageband. but don't know how to cut out two second from the midde of the song.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use GarageBand. There's a GarageBand Support Community where everybody uses GarageBand. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

I have iLife disc n i installed garage band on my macbook n in appstore it shows that i have purchased it...but when i log on to mu ipad mini it asks me to again purchase it can't i just install it without buying it again..

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I'm sorry, but you have to purchase GarageBand twice. GarageBand for iPad and GarageBand for OS X are two different versions that are sold in different App Stores, so you have to purchase GarageBand for the iPad in the App Store if you want it
