Excessive CPU activity when Repairing Permissions & Emptying Trash Securely

I've a new Macbook and, when compared to my humble ibook G4, the CPU nears 100% activity in the monitor and the fan whirrs loudly.
One such occasion included the following -
process name: 'instaldb'
user: _installer
real memory: 147MB
virtual memory: 158MB
Msgs received: 70
Msgs sent: 94
I've restarted and - obviously - repaired permissions, to no avail.
I think this overload issue may also include problems I'm having with Logic 8 audio overload, but am not sure.

while that may be true - it doesn't explain how my 1.33Ghz ibook, on 512Mb RAM had no problem performing these routine tasks.
and i have to say, it is pretty alarming when the fan's on full bore and the Activity monitor's peaking!

When trying to empty trash, (securely or not), I get this: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).  FWIW, there are nearly 3000 items in my Trash - although this does not seem the source of the problem.

  • Finder stalls forever when trying to empty trash

Occasionally, about once a day or every other day, when I try to empty the trash, it'll bring up the progress bar, but it'll say 0 items regardless of how many items are in the trash. It'll stall, the Finder uses up 100+% of CPU, fan goes wild, and it'll stay like that for, as far as I can tell, forever. If that happens, I'll bring up the force quit window, select Finder and click restart. The finder quits, the empty-trash-progress bar disappears, fan slows down, but the Finder does not come back up... The dock seems to be working, but if I click on something to launch it, it won't launch anything. Basically it won't respond to anything. Applications that are already running at this point will continue to run, but behaves strangely, and sometimes won't respond. If I press the power button, it brings up the shutdown/restart option, but selecting one of the options don't seem to do anything, so I end up having to force shutdown by holding down the power button.
After I restart it, there's no problem emptying the trash. It seems to only happen when I've had my computer running for a while, and I can never predict when it'll happen again.
    Secure erase trash is disabled.
I've had this issue at least from 10.6.1, and maybe 10.6 as well. Upgrading to 10.6.2 did not resolve it.
Anyone have the same issue, and/or have any clue what might be going on?
EDIT: I'll also add that after this crash happens, and I restart the computer, Spotlight rebuilds the index all over again... so I wonder if Spotlight is crashing when trying to empty trash...?

The first and easiest thing I'd try would be the Trash itself.
Go to /Applications /Utilities/Terminal and launch it.
At the prompt, copy and paste this commandsudo rm -rf ~/.TrashPress Return.
You will be asked to enter your admin password. It will be invisible.
    Enter it and press Return.
Log out and back in or restart.
    Let us know.

  • ERROR when repairing permissions: Group differs on "private/etc/cup"

    Hi,
When I run permissions repair on my Leopard 10.5.4 I get the error message:
ERROR when repairing permissions: Group differs on "private/etc/cup", Should be 0, group is 26
Any idea why... It pops up every time I run permissions repair so I don't think it is really getting repaired.
    Thanks.

Ignore it. It's been reported as a bug and is under investigation.

  • FileVault off or on when repairing permissions and updating software?

Does anyone know if FileVault can be left on when repairing permissions and installing apple software updates. I have been turning it off before doing so, but not sure if that's needed. I've been doing that just to be on the safe side.

FileVault only affects your home folder. Permissions repair repairs only permissions on installed OS packages, which are in system folders. Apple software updates make changes to system folders. Since the system folders aren't affected by FileVault, leaving FV on shouldn't affect these operations.

  • My computer can't stop emptying trash securely

I've unchecked "Empty Trash Securely" in the Finder menu, restarted, and repaired permissions but my MBP keeps emptying trash securely. I am at a loss. What else do I need to do to empty trash unsecurely?

I have discovered that it is indeed coming from Skype, so I will harass them for an answer.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files / empty trash securely

I just used the disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files...
It created a recovery folder which I tried to empty trash securely...i the got a message saying there are some locked items and I responded to remove all items...
It would not let me do that the file stayed in the trash until I changed the setting and just emptied the trash the conventional way..
Can anyone tell me why that is happening???

Disk Drill, and all other file recovery apps for the Mac will recover every deleted file it can find on the drive. However, it should not have been at all possible to recover the ones you deleted with Secure Empty Trash. All files currently in the trash have every bit of their data overwritten 7 times with random data.
Were these part of what was recovered? Or just other normally deleted items?

Hi Rich, it sounds like your MacBook is running well after the archive & install.
when the user login screen came up... and it trashed my Adobe CS2/CS3 installs and Parallels. It trashed them? Are you sure it didn't save them in a folder called, "Previous System" on the top level (root level) of your hard drive? Can't you just re-install them?
Also, you should maintain some type of backup, preferably on a firewire hard drive. If you clone your entire system over to one and make it bootable, you never have to worry.
You can also run Apple Hardware Test to set your mind at ease about hardware issues:
    Using Apple Hardware Test:
    1. Disconnect all external devices from your iMac except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
    2. Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your iMac.
    3. Restart your iMac and hold down the D key as your iMac starts up.
    4. When the Apple Hardware Test chooser screen appears, select the language
    appropriate for your location.
    5. Press the Return key or click the right arrow button.
    6. When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
    the onscreen instructions.
    7. Apple Hardware Test displays an error code if it detects a problem. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options.
I don't know about that CleanApp thingy, not sure you need it for anything,
