Excessive cpu use and crashes

I've been having many crashes lately. One of the odd symptoms is that the Activity Monitor shows huge amounts of cpu use graphically, while at the same time showing very little use in the written list. A screenshot is here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/34043585@N00/2363034014/sizes/o/
and here

Sometimes an app will crash, ask if I want to restart, restart, and crash again.
I went through my fonts tonight and repaired my disk permissions. However, I still get this error message when I run a permissions check:
ACL found but not expected on "System/Library/Frameworks/IOKit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info.plist".
and
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
So far things appear to be ok tonight, but this puppy has been intermittent, so I don't know if my font futzing did any good.
Any ideas on the ACL messages and why the cpu usage was off the charts?
Tom

ACL stands for "Access Control List." It's a way of restricting who can access what files on your computer. It should not be on the file you listed. You'll need to remove it, which you can find out how to do in OS 10.4 by reading this article:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10-4.ars/8
It is possible that this ACL is what's causing your problems and it's a good place to start. However, I also recommend you boot the computer in Safe mode by restarting while holding down the Shift key. Booting in safe mode runs a lot of maintenance scripts that clear font caches, etc. It may help.

  • Photoshop Premiere 9 vs 13? Are there any problems with CPU usage and crashing?

I stopped using Premiere, because they the computer would freeze and/or the program. I was curious if there was any issue with people currently using Version 13?  I think I loaded it on this computer along with Photoshop Elements 9.  After a while I just kept Photoshop Elements.
    System Specs:
    Windows 7 premium home edition
    Processor Intel R Core TM i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz 2.30 GHz
Installed Memory 6.00GB   826 GB free
    64 Bit Operating system

    stephanies
If 64 bit, while 9 will be a 32 bit application with the limitations of a 32 bit application on 64 bit system, 13 will be a 64 bit application which translates into more computer resources available to 13.
Elements Organizer 9 will not integrate with Elements Organizer 13 although you can convert the 9 catalog in Elements Organizer 13. And there is a marked difference in the workspace between the two versions. Principles tend to stay the same, but features can be moved, changed, or discontinued.
I would have expected Premiere Elements 9/9.0.1 to have worked in your computer environment. Since it did not, I would strongly suggest that you look at the free 30 days tryout of Premiere Elements 13/13.1 in your computer environment to assure the compatibility of it with your computer environment and project goals.

I really don't know where to start with this. No reason I should be having any problems.
If I don't run under compatibility mode for windows XP SP 3 I can't even launch PS SC4, if I do that and run as administrator I get error with my GPU I have an MSI hawk HD 5770. If I close that out and say ok no using that, I crash when I try to open a picture getting this error

  • Firefox plugin container high cpu usage and crashing

All three of my family's computers have been experiencing problems with the firefox plugin container.  The container spikes the CPU for long, long, periods of time slowing overall performance noticably.
The only way to address the problem is to kill the Firefox plugin container.
When I kill the plugin container it kills Adobe Flash.  This also occurs with Google Chrome and IE (problem and fix).
This leads me to beleive Flash is the problem.
I've tried clearing the flash cache from the Adobe troubleshooting site, deleting all cache applications, and changing settings.
    Nothing seems to work.
IS ADOBE FLASH BROKEN?  If not how can I troubleshoot this problem? My family plays Farmville which is always hanging and can only be fixed by restarting the computer. Okay, maybe farmville is a bad app.
However, I had the same problem when I went to Adobe.Com to try ans find a solution to this problem.  The flash application spikde the CPU and the fix was to kill flash.
I'm not without skills - I could use some direction on how to troubleshoot flash?
    Suggestions?
    Regards,
    Dale

    Thanks.
Since I know absolutley nothing about flash that was very helpful.

  • ICal is too slow for practical use and crashes after it is opened

I am using an iMac G4 with OSX10.4.8. iCal is so slow that it has become impractical to use. Every click takes at least a minute to complete. Moving from the daily to the monthly view takes at least 3 minutes. I have discarded the plist file from the user library and it did not help. Any idea what is going on? Safari also suffers from the same slowness problem. I no longer use it. Have switched to Firefox.

I was having the same problem and it started after I upgraded to Tiger. After trying all the solutions, I discovered the problem with my iCal, which might not be the same for yours.
I was trying to sync with Entourage. I only had about 5 appointments on there, but once I deleted that calendar and unchecked the Sync to .Mac under preferences.
Now it runs SUPER fast. So it may be a problem with one of the calendars that you've created.
    Good luck.
    Thanks!

  • Rim transcoder - excessive CPU use

I had a look for this but couldn't find anything already posted. Every time I plug the PB in with USB, I get horrendous CPU usage (99%) and the CPU fan starts whizzing, which it rarely does when I do anything else CPU intensive.  So bad now, I have pretty much given up plugging it in.  Anyone else suffer with this?  Anyone got a cure (apart from several obvious but stupid ones)?
    Cheers

No- in my case it only seems noticeable on my netbook- I see it hogs cpu on my dual core -notebook- also but just seems to crunch through it much quicker and does not bog down the system as much bc of the much beefier cpu. Still, I had BB Desktop for years on laptop and netbook without this issue- sure would be nice to get a fix.

  • W701ds CPU overheats and crashes

My laptop crashes when overheatig the processor. Sometimes it happens in ten minutes from the Windows starting an anothers in more time (1 hour). The thing is... I'm working for a while  and suddenly the mouse and keyboard don't work and three seconds later the system crashes. Then I touch the side where the processor is, and it burns. If I wait half an hour, the laptop gets cold and I can work again for another while.
The laptop has the latest drivers from Levono and Windows 7 x64.
If running test, everything is ok (even the processor i7 x940 2.13GHz)
Any idea? Anybody with the same problem?

Fjdiazal, running with clogged air vents is probably the number one killer of the W7XXxx, and we've seen this happen over and over again. Your laptop will die from the resulting overheating if you don't unclog those vents. Unless you've been cleaning them, the tiny air intake slots on the bottom of the laptop's base, beneath the center of each fan, are guaranteed to be clogged with dust. You can't even see that dust unless you shine a flashlight directly into those tiny slots.
Anyway, here's a great discussion of the best approaches for cleaning all the vents on your W7XXxx, which takes just a few minutes, and which you should do before considering repasting anything:

  • Syslogd cpu use and Update Manager

    Hello,
Forgive me if I missed this elsewhere, however I'm experiencing syslogd using 50% to 190% cpu time on a dual processor v280R system. Is this normal behavior or am I missing a patch?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Could you provide us with the output from prstat
I could understand if you were getting this problem from a process that was related to updatemanager, but unless updatemanager was causing entries to be logged then I wouldn't expect this behaviour.
Do you see the same behaviour when running smpatch (or other applications) ?

  • Firefox is using large amounts of CPU time and disk access, and I need to know how to shut down most of this so I can actually use the browser.

Firefox is a very busy piece of software. It's using large amounts of CPU time and disk access. It puts my usage at low priority, so I have to wait for some time to be able to use my pointer or keyboard. I don't know what it uses all that CPU and disk access time for, but it's of no use to me. It often takes off with massive use of resources when I'm not doing anything, and I may not have use of my pointer for several minutes. How can I shut down most of this so I can use the browser to get my work done. I just want to use the web site access part of the software, and drop all the extra. I don't want Firefox to be able to recover after a crash. I just want to browse with a minimum of interference from Firefox. I would think that this is the most commonly asked question.

Firefox 18.0.1 consumes excessive CPU--both in Standard and Safe Modes--when accessing Gmail (in Standard Mode). CPU consumption averages around 56% on my dual-CPU, Windows 7 desktop.
The only way to stop this from happening it to open Gmail in "HTML" mode. When I open Gmail in Standard mode, a "Loading..." status shows at the top of the page. After about 30 seconds, a error window pops-up within the Gmail page saying that there is a performance problem and provides the option to load Gmail in a limited, "HTML" mode. Clicking the HTML Mode link solves the issue. I've been using Firefox for years and have never seen this issue until now.

  • Flash Player using high CPU constantly and heating system

Hi I am in India ... from last few months I am noticing that Flash Player is using too much CPU when ever I run IE, Explorer or opera ... when I disable Flash Player then IE and opera work on normal CPU ... I have uninstalled Chrome since I was unable to disable flash player on it ... I have 2nd generation i5 .. 3gb ram ... dedicated 1gb nvidia graphics card ... 750 Gb hdd ... win7 home premium 64 bit ... I am able to easily play Crysis 2 ... halo ... far cry ... wolfenstein 2009 and many more intense graphic games on my laptop without over heating it ... but flash player causes excessive CPU constant use and system to over heat if I watch a complete movie on you tube ... any other compatible player available plz do tell ..... rgds

Hi ... I use admin account only to install new software or games ... for all other uses I log in as an ordinary account
But even when logged in with admin account the same prb persists ... cause of this flash player prb I have even stopped playing  games on FB & Zynga ...
For this flash player problem I even took it to acer service center and since I have extended service warranty the engineers there ran acomplete check on ram, hdd, graphic card and they also did a complete fresh install of win 7 home premium 64 bit edition. They even completely serviced it, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste ...  but even they were baffled that my system can stand up to high intensity graphic games running from HDD or DVD rom or USB pen drive but if I try to run graphic flash player games for long ie castleville or watch a long movie on you tube then flash player can single handedly cause CPU usage to be constantly high leading to system getting heated up.
Guess will just have to be content without flash ... but some sites require flash player to be enabled and therein lies the problem

  • "parentalcont" process using excessive CPU

I noticed my iMac really struggling this evening with a web conference - the case heating up and the video connection dropping quite often.  I looked at Activity Monitor and the % User value at the bottom jumped to 25-30% every few seconds with nothing really running, but no processes in the list were showing high CPU use.  I used the "top" command in terminal and found that the process "parentalcont" was consuming excessive CPU cycles (it showed around 95% every few seconds).
I just set up an account for my 6-year-old to play with her online disney games and what-not a few days ago and enabled parental controls.  Never used them before.  After going to "Preferences>Users" and disabling parental controls the problem went away.
Anyone have any idea why parental controls would act this way?  When I'm not even logged in to the account that uses them?
    Thanks.

"parentalcont" is what displays in the "COMMAND" column when using the "top" function in terminal.  That column appears to be limited to 12 characters so it is probably truncating the name. (e.g.  "Folder Actio" is another one listed).  This process doesn't show up at all in Activity Monitor.
An update:  After some trial and error, I've found that the "Limit Applications" function of parental controls appears to be the culprit.  When I tell it to limit applications to "Up to 9+" the CPU use skyrockets after a 10-30 seconds, and the process shows its state as "stuck".
Kind of a head-scratcher but I think the solution may be to just not use the "Limit Applications" feature.  All I really wanted was the Simple Finder and to block bad websites.

  • Forte Partition using excessive CPU

    Dear All,

Could you do us the honour of linking to this fix? I'm having the same problem; java using 100-120% CPU for some mystery process, even when every app has been quit. Googling it only points in the direction of coder sites and this thread, which whilst being 'fixed' doesn't actually offer one.

  • AME CS6 and % of cpu used

    Hello.
    imac i7 3.4ghz
    24gb ram
    GTX 680MX
When encoding is there anyway to get AME to utilize more of my cpu consistently?
When encoding I'm seeing a fluctuation between under 10% use and 30-70% every other second. So one second it will be 8% then the next will be 53%, then back to 7%, then 47% and so on.  For a glorious few minutes it was up around 500% and  knocked about 20 minutes off the rendering time. Is this fluctuation typical for other users?
    Thanks

Avchd footage, output to blu ray h264. Plays fine in PPro sequence.
I had some flash frames in my previous export (user induced) so I'm re-exporting part of it.
It's a 12 minute section, has colorista, magic bullet, and an adjustment layer on 90% of clips.
Media is on 1 tunderbolt drive and I'm exporting to another thunderbolt drive.
I'm getting that fluctuating cpu usage described above and
AME is estimating 6 hours, does that seem normal or excessive with my setup?

  • High CPU load and com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 crash after upgrade

After upgrading my Macbook Air from Lion to Mountain Lion, the system has a very high cpu load, and the crash reporter is the process that causes thee high load. In the error log I see this entry several times per second:

I investigated a bit more and recovered, that it has something to do with the printer drivers. When I remove all printers from setting, everything is fine. As soon as I add a printer (Brother MFC 9440CN printer/scanner, printer driver provided by Mountan Lion), the crash reporter starts it's work and the error log is full of those entries.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

I did more exploration and found the cause of this, but I don't know how to fix it:
I removed all Brother and Lexmark printer drivers and rebooted (and also tested with a virtual machine using 10.8.0 as guest os that never had any printer installed). As soon as I enter the printer settings and press the "+", the crashes begin, so it looked like the bonjour one of the printers announcing themselves via Bonjour were causing this.
When watching a picture in the preview app the same happend. We have two multi function printers in our network, the already mentioned brother printer and a Lexmark X204N. Switching off the Lexmark (which wasn't installed on my Mac) solved the problem. Switching off the printer is no solution in our office (it's our fax device and main printer), but switching off mDNS on the Lexmark also solved it. But this can only be a workaround.
Is this a known problem with Lexmark devices and Mountain Lion (it works fine with machines using Lion)? Are there any fixes known? It's just the Lexmark device announing itself via Bonjour that causes trouble, even if the driver is not installed.
