Excessive "Emergency Broadcast System" Tests

I'm a late night tv watcher in FL and for months now, I've been seeing these "monthly" Emergency Alert System or Emergency Broadcast System messages interrupt programming. It's really a pain with certain VOD programs because they don't allow more than 2x FF, so presuming VOD resumes immediately (not a given) I can still be forced to have to fast forward through 2 hours of a movie to get back to the climactic action sequence or dramatic courtroom shocker or what have you.
These tests are very important. I really, really want this system to work to inform me if a hurricane or other natural disaster is headed my way.
That said, I counted 6 days in a row that they ran this test. Over the last few months it's felt like almost every night.
These are supposed to be monthy tests.
If they ran these tests during prime time, folks would be upset maybe not so much the first time, but certainly if it started to feel like nearly every night during prime time, Verizon was interrupting programming to run these tests.
Which begs the question, are there really so many changes to the system occuring that these tests must be repeated almost nightly?
If not, why aren't they being done on their monthy schedule? It's no fun getting blasted with that Emergency test klaxon and my ceiling is getting worn out....
If someone would please look into that, I'd surely appreciate that.

The tests are not under Verizon's control.
That said it would be great if Verizon fixed the way it effects recordings and VOD, so as to minimize impact after an alert is over.

  • Excessive Emergency Broadcasting "Required Weekly Test"-ing

    Has anyone else noticed excessive Emergency Broadcasting System tests tonight?  I've seen at least six (probably more like 8) "required weekly tests" in the past two hours and it's absolutely obnoxious.  I'm in Northern NJ if that counts for anything.

    When I first got FiOS TV almost 5 years ago I saw and heard tests 2 - 3 times per week, sometimes more, at all hours of the day and night. After about 6 months they disappeared, and I don't remember a test in at least a couple of years, I think they do them in the middle of the night when most people, including me, are asleep.And I never leave the TV on at night.
    Is Verizon still installing new TV service in new areas where you are located? If so, I think that may be the reason for the tests. As they install a new subdivision or a multi-family building, etc, I think they are required to test to make sure it works in the new area. Unfortunately though, it appears that they cannot test in just the new area, but seem to cover a lot of areas already installed and activated.
    But that many tests in a short time does seem to be excessive; perhaps the tests are failing and they are retesting trying to find the problem? I don't know. But I know I would not be happy either...and unfortunately I have no idea what you might be able to do about it. But I think it will go away soon.

  • This is a test of the emergency broadcast system

    In the event of a real Adobe emergency, you will be instructed as to where to go to get your Adobe unbroke.

    got it - just in case others have a similar question - this worked:
    var i = 0;
    function nextFrame() {
        if(i < blob.length) {
            {sym.$("Text").html(a+blob[i])
            a=a+blob[i];
            i++;
            // Continue the loop in 50ms
            setTimeout(nextFrame, 50);

  • Emergency System Tests happen too frequently

    I swear to god that these emergency system tests happen at least every 2 days, if not every day. I'm sure not many people are noticing considering they happen so early in the morning, but it's getting REALLY annoying when even DVR recorded shows get interrupted because of this. Is there some kind of computer error that these keep happening so often? I'm in the Philadelphia area.

    I corroborate that it happens every 2 or 3 days and it breaks up any content being recorded. Luckily, due to some update recently the DVR has picked up and started recording the show again, but a year ago once the DVR displayed EST on the front you knew the recording was over and you had to remember what you had set up and start it up again,
    Originally we had thought each channel had to do the EST on their own, so G4 did it every Monday and USA did it on Thursday etc so that would explain why we got cut off several times a week, but we finally realized it was the whole DVR being taken over when we had simultaneous EST breaks in two recordings.
    Perhaps the frequency depends on the local Verizon setup. We're in central NJ.

  • Never again - Emergency Alert System (EAS)

    My daughter was watching TV last night and FIOS interrupted programming with some Emergency Alert System message that was painfully loud and temporarily damaged her hearing. We could not disable it when it happened. If this ever happens again, we're through with FIOS TV.
    I can't believe that anyone would do this not knowing the potential damage it can incur.

    ibwalkn,
    First, I am sorry your daughter's hearing was damaged, I hope it really is or was temporary. Having said that, however:
    a) It is required by law to broadcast those alerts, as you have already been informed about and provided with a reference.
    b) I think the alert really has to be louder than the normal programming to get the viewer's attention (but obviously not so loud as to damage someone's hearing).
    c) I think it also disrupts your viewing to get your attention, just like the sound volume. I don't think there is a program being broacast that you cannot afford to miss a minute or two of. Now, as to having to restart the recording, I agree, that really should not be required. As far as I can tell, the FiOS DVRs record programs based on the program info provided in the Guide; I am guessing that perhaps the emergency broadcast temporarily causes the DVR to lose the program info, and thus it stops recording. That would seem to me to be something Verizon could fix, if that is in fact the reason it stops recording.
    d) Although my kids are long, long gone from our house, I fully support the current implementation. It is a good thing, and only a minor irritant, and pretty rare at that.
    I don't know how old your daughter is, but if it were her that was missing, I suspect you would have a different outlook on this (again, except for the hearing damage).
    There are certainly some problems with FiOS, but this is not one of them, IMO.

  • Errant Emergency Broadcast Alerts in Southern California

    For the past few weeks, residents in West LA/Santa Monica/Etc. have been getting emergency broadcast warnings regarding flooding happening several counties away -- areas over 70-80 miles away, including Riverside, CA & San Bernadino, CA.
    Given their frequency & irrelevance, my family has started to ignore them, which is somewhat disconcerting & undermines the point of the system.
    For the life of me, I can't find a way to contact anyone at Verizon to report the issue.
    Does anyone know where to go?
    I've contacted the FCC, but I thought it may be faster if I could find the right person to contact in Verizon as well?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    The only options for "support" I can find from Verizon were:
    1. The forums, which is how I found this thread. Maybe if enough people comment on this thread a Verizon employee will post some placating response about how they can't do anything.
    2. Complaining to their twitter account: @VerizonSupport. I doubt this is effective but maybe they'll pay attention if someone with a lot of followers complains?
    3. Submitting something to their idea exchange, which seems like it's gear more towards technology issues: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-Idea-Exchange/ct-p/ideaexchange, .
    I just filled out the FCC online complaint form and hoping that we get another decade of drought until Verizon fixes the problem.

  • SP9 on PCK - file adapter configuration or Messaging System Test

    Hi,
    I have upgraded my XI 3.0 PCK from SP1 to SP9. This is fine but now I do not have the Messaging System Test JSP
    (I could not install the old one).So I would like to
    configure the file adapter to send to my adapter some outbound messages.
    I have tried configuring the file adapter as
    I do on full XI server but the file adpater on PCK
    just doesn't want to recognize the binding. No error logs, nothing. Any ideas what could be wrong ?
    Sincerely,
    Maxim Naidenov

    The configuration of the PCK is different to the XI.
    You need:
    Communication Channel:
    -> for Sender (File)
    -> for Receiver (XI) (Here you enter the URL of the XI)
    sender agreement (matching sender channel and interface)
    receiver agreement (matching receiver channel and interface)
    As the XI needs the same configuration for partner and service as the PCK, you should create two partners for PCK and XI and assign the sender channel to the service belonging to the partner PCK and the receiver channel to the service belonging to the partner XI.
    I hope that helps
    Stefan

  • SOA System Testing on SOA Suite. Best Practices and approaches needed.

    Hi,
    New to this Forum and sorry if I landed at wrong place. We need to perform System/Functional testing for applications deployed on Oracle SOA Suite.
    SOAP UI helps us in many ways.
    But scenarios below being considered, we need your expertise to help us in this effort:
    Services may be of various complexities...Eg:
    1. A service operation may be of kind where we send a request and not receive response.
    2. Service of type where we send request and cannot wait for response bcoz of service being in Asynchronous nature.
    3. Request sent and we get batch of responses and also a vice-versa scenario.
    Unit Testing for above scenarios can be done using JDeveloper based BPEL Test Framework. However, our focus is with respect to System Testing.
    Any Open-source Testing tools for Web Services or proprietary tools that can do this would be of help.
    Please note that we have evaluated and find that HP Service Test Tool helps in almost all above scenarios. However, looking for all possible alternatives and best approaches.
    Your Advice is highly appreciated.
    Best Regards,
    Chaitanya

  • Moving the 80 Million records from Conversion database to System Test database (Just for one transaction table) taking too long.

    Hello Friends,
    The background is I am working as conversion manager and we move the data from oracle to SQL Server using SSMA and then we will apply the conversion logic and then move the data to system test ,UAT and Production.
    Scenario:
    Moving the 80 Million records from Conversion database to System Test database (Just for one transaction table) taking too long. Both the databases are in the same server.
    Questions are…
    What is best option?
    IF we use the SSIS it’s very slow and taking 17 hours (some time it use to stuck and won’t allow us to do any process).
    I am using my own script (Stored procedure) and it’s taking only 1 hour 40 Min. I would like know is there any better process to speed up and why the SSIS is taking too long.
    When we move the data using SSIS do they commit inside after particular count? (or) is the Microsoft is committing all the records together after writing into Transaction Log
    Thanks

    If you have Apple Care for that computer, give them a call: Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775
    If you're not sure how to handle the situation, consider walking your MB into the nearest Apple Store and asking someone there to take a look, etc.

  • System Testing

    Hi, i'm not sure if this topic really belongs in this section but hopefully sum1 can help me anyway or direct me to sumwhere who can! I've made a program for my final year project. The system implemented is an organising tool, and has a to-do list and a timetable function. Now, part of the project is to do a system test. How do I go about doin automated system testing? How would I go about even normal testing? I realise you can set up tests using System.out.println() but i am clueless on how. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    kind regards,
    Gibbon!

    Take a look at JUnit. It's a unit test harness. There are other optional packages that you can download to do automated UI testing as well. www.junit.org

    Our CUCM need to interface HTL to Emergency paging system (EPS).
    EPS collects alarm traps from HTL and inform the maintenance in-charge via SMS, voicemail, email.

    I am not sure which SNMP version does CUCM 8.5 use.
    Could anyone able to find these info and  also confirm how many SNMP hosts can be assigned to send alarm traps.
