Excessive Fan Activity - High Performance Mode

I have a macbook pro 15" 2009 model
It works brilliantly, no complaints I love it.. in battery saving mode!
When its in high performance mode the fan goes nuts!?
I've checked activity monitor etc and nothing is using all the power, theres no reason why the fan should be working harder than it does in battery saving mode.
I always have open.. Adobe Fireworks, Chrome and Finder.. Thats pretty much it. And in battery saving mode everything works great, the fan is quiet. Why when I select high performance for a bit extra speed maybe does the fan speed increase tenfold? Dosnt make sense!
Anybody come across this?
Thanks

Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Wait fifteen seconds.
4. Attach the computer's power cord.
5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • K8N Neo - High Performance Mode Killed System?

I'm slightly frazzled at the moment, so forgive me for any mistakes. I installed the K8N Neo Platinum on Tuesday night, with a brand new Athlon64 3200+ with 1mb L2.
Video Card: VisionTek Xtasy Geforce4 Ti4400
    Memory: 2x Kingston 512MB 400MHz DDR PC3200
    Power Supply: Antec True550
    +3.3V @ 32A
    +5V @ 40A
    +12V @ 24A
I installed the various MSI applications tonight, including CoreCenter. Attempted to adjust the FSB with it, but with just a 2.5% increase, the temperature of the CPU was getting higher than I cared to see during stressful applications. So I set it back to default, and later on read up on the BIOS settings in the manual... I read the description of "High Performance Mode", and figured I would try setting it to Optimized.
Seemed like a good idea, let the board I had read was great for overclocking do it's stuff automatically. So after I set it to optimized (Didn't change anything else), I hit F10 and let it reboot. It never did. When it rebooted, the power stayed on, Hard Drive light showed it was being accessed... Only problem was absolutely no video was being sent. Monitor was as black as black could be.
Turned the power off, tried again and again. Same deal. Power comes on, HD shows it is being accessed constantly for about 20 seconds, then just stops. But no video is being output, which leads me to think the system is just dead in the water for the most part.
During this state, the LED's on the back are as follows: Top two are red, bottom two are green. I saw in another thread someone was going on about there being an explanation for them, but I don't have it in my manual nor could I find an explanation of them.
At this point I'm just shaking my head, because there is absolutely nothing to be done as far as I can tell. If anyone has any ideas as to a possible solution or at the very least, whether the MB just went nuts or something worse happened, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm at a loss and afraid to even think what might be the problem.

While the "high performance settings" can surely make the pc unstable, it should hardly ccause hardware-damage.
Turn the computer off (to be safe, remove the power-cord)
Clear cmos with the jumper (instructions can be found in your manual)
    Wait 30 seconds
Put the jumper back to its original position.
Power on the system, and see if it works ?
    EDIT: Info from manual:
    Quote
    Clear CMOS Jumper: JBAT1
There is a CMOS RAM on board that has a power supply from external battery
to keep the system configuration data. With the CMOS RAM, the system can automatically
boot OS every time it is turned on. If you want to clear the system configuration,
use the JBAT1 (Clear CMOS Jumper ) to clear data. Follow the instructions below to
    clear the data:
    MSI Reminds You...
You can clear CMOS by shorting 2-3 pin while the system is off.
Then return to 1-2 pin position. Avoid clearing the CMOS while the
system is on; it will damage the mainboard.

  • Acpi-cpufreq, pm-suspend, CPU1 set to high performance mode

Basically, the background of the problem is that ACPI is unable to set my second core, CPU1, to the proper frequency. it gets some sort of AE_NOT_FOUND error or something in a psyloop. subsequently, the cpu0 is set by cpufreq while the second CPU, since it is not controlled by kernel at all, ends up overriding the CPU0 settings and setting the entire thing to High Performance mode. the acpi-cpufreq module then crashes and is unable to set any rules, so it defaults to 2.2 ghz and performance mode.
I found that the only way to undo this after a resume from pm-suspend without restarting altogether is to first unload the acpi-cpufreq module (force option must be used otehrwise a "currently in use" error occurs), then reload it, then restart cpufreq daemon to make it restore the settings i have.
    $> sudo rmmod -f acpi-cpufreq
    $> sudo modprobe acpi-cpufreq
    $> sudo /etc/rc.d/cpufreq restart
my question is, is there any way to REload the module and restart the daemon after resuming? i know that you can set acpi-cpufreq to unload on suspend, but that doesnt work because of the acpi-cpufreq module being used by another program, and i do not know how to make it forcibly unload. nor am i sure if unloading it would require me to restart the daemon still or not.
    your help/suggestions are appreciated

  • How do I force my Macbook Pro to stay in "high performance" mode??

    Hi!
My Macbook Pro keeps reverting to the "better battery life" setting on it's own, even if I lock the System Preference panel. Is there a way to force the  "higher performance" option to stay enabled?
Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Macbook pro 17 turns off when switching to high performance mode

    Hi guys!
My 2009 Macbook pro 17 turns off and goes dead when switching to "high performance" graphics in the energy saver controll panel.
This happens also when the battery is 100% charged. i must reconnect powersupply to reboot.
The battery is new, from june this year.

    Aardal87 wrote:
I have just re installed the system. and the problem continues.
I guess ur solution isnt worth trying on a fresh system install?
It will not do any harm trying it but you are probably correct in these circumstances.
If the symptoms are consistent, then a savvy technician at an Apple store genius bar should be able to define the problem.
    Ciao.

  • High Performance or Energy Saver Mode???

I have had my MBP 17 for over a month and had it on Better Battery mode and I just switched to Higher performance, since I am new with this computer is there really a difference and if so what are they?

In Higher Performance mode you are using a different GPU - the 9600 instead of the 9400 - and it's possible for both GPUs to be used together to improve video and graphic performance. There's also a potential difference in memory usage. The 9600 GPU has dedicated video RAM while the 9400 GPU uses shared RAM, that is part of the physically installed RAM. If you switch to Higher Performance then restart the computer you will recapture the 256 MBs of RAM shared with the 9400 GPU.
As eww has said the 9600 GPU has much higher performance capabilities, requires more power, uses additional dedicated RAM, and therefore generates more heat and consumes more power from the battery if you operate off the AC adaptor.

  • Increased Fan Activity

    I have a Macbook Pro (2.5GHz Intel Core-2 with 2GB memory) running on OS-X 10.6.
I have some excessive fan activity (a steady 5998rpm) despite the temperature steady around the 41 degrees mark and the laptop on a wooden table. The weird thing is that this happens despite using few applications, and thus a very low CPU.

I have much the same problem with my G5 running 10.4.7, but the fan problem has been around since at least 10.4.3, and back in Panther it showed up in 10.3.8. The quickest fix (although even this will only just keep the fans under control) is to go into System Preferences --> Energy Saver and set Processor Performance to Highest. For whatever reason, this calms the fans down somewhat. But be careful, because they may start to escalate again if you do strenuous work, such as some multimedia operations (I get problems with heavy animations on certain websites), or if the heat in your workroom goes up too high. (The recent, albeit brief, heat wave here in New England and the one in Europe sent fans into overdrive regardless of processor settings.)
Hope this helps. Maybe Apple will fix it by the time they issue Leopard.

  • State of Transaction in High Safety mode (Synchronous mode)

    Hello Team,
I have configured Database Mirroring with High Safety mode ( Synchronous Mode). I have started a long transaction (transaction A) which is expected to complete in 10 minutes. However, principal server shuts down due to hardware issue.
What will happen to the transaction A.
Also, what will be state of transaction if i have configured Mirroring with High Performance Mode (Asynchronous Mode).
    Chetan

    1. Transaction is being executed on Principal server and mirroring fails
In this scenario SQL Server would not be able to commit its transaction because it wont be able to send log records to mirror and hence would not be able to get acknowledgement about commit on mirror. Transaction log will grow till it occupies whole space
and then application might stop responding as database would not able to log transactions. DB might also go in unresponsive state
    2. Transaction is completed execution on principal server, it is being executing on mirrored server and mirroring fails
Transaction replay happens almost at same time (with little delay) . The mirror receives and writes the log buffer to disk and records the mirroring_failover_lsn and notifies the principal that the log block has been hardened. If commit has been acknowledged
on mirror and principal both before failover, then after when mirror will come online it will replay transaction. Anything before that would cause rollback on mirror.
    3. Transaction is completed execution on principal server & mirroring server. Before principal server receives confirmation from mirrored server about execution completion, mirroring fails.
Actually this question is bit confusing and in some way incorrect I would like you to read
Table 9: A Safety FULL (Synchronous transfer) example sequence of events.
    in below link
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc917680.aspx
The possible answer is rollback on mirror.
Edit: In case of any conflict LSN on both principal and mirror is used to resolve conflict. Remember mirroring does not works in two phase commit like distributed transaction failures to commit on the mirror will not cause a transaction rollback on the principal.

  • Brightness unadjustable for "High Performance" in Switchable Graphics Card Technology

    Hello,
I have just transitioned to Windows 7 Professional on my Thinkpad R400(2787-A31)
However, after installing the Thinkpad Switchable Graphics Card driver, i am unable to adjust my brightness if i am using the High Performance mode. My laptop comes with ATi Radeon 3470 and Intel GMA 4500MHD.
I have already installed most of the drivers, and after some testing i realised that it was the switchable graphics driver that cause this problem. Before installation of this driver, i was on the ATi Radeon all the while and i can change the brightness.
I hope some one can help me with this driver issue. My installation of the drivers was from the support page. All except the PCI Simple Communications Controller has their drivers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Rosemars,
Thank you very much for solving the problem.
The key solution lies with the BIOS update. For people who cannot get the tool to work(mine keep giving an error message), there's an alternativie BIOS update utility at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70351
This is for R400 and T400s, for other models please select your model number at the Support page and find the utility.
    Cheers & Thumb Up!

  • MSI GS60 Ghost Pro Golden Edition - A Combination of Stylish and High Performance.

I have no idea who can say no to this shining and charming beauty....
    The BackStory
When I studied at graduate school, I bought my first laptop, Asus F3J, of my life and brought it to school everyday. Actually it was a 2.9kg around laptop for gaming and I felt like carry a heavy brick. It was quite inconvient and kind of suffer for a person like me who was not doing fitness. After I graduated from school and was being a member of society, I decided to find a  laptop that was much lighter and easier to bright to work. Toshiba R830 was what I chose, but this time, the performance of playing some hardcore game wasn’t good enough since it doesn’t have a discrete graphics card.
I started to believe there is a trade off between perforamnce and weight of laptop with these two experience. Until one day, I came across with MSI GS60 Ghost Pro at Computex 2014, it was a notebook weigh just around 2kg and uncompromising with high performance. In more detail, It had core I7 CPU、High-end GTX graphics card and two 256MB SSD within it. From that day, I know it is the notebook am looking for, it is a note book I can bring to work and also play game at home. Furthermore, MSI is going to issue the limited Golden edition of it around the end of year, it gave me one more reason to buy this “good stuff”, because both me and my girl think gold is the most fashion color in recent year, just like iphone. So that is the backstory, now i just have the golden one and is going to unbox it for you.
    The Main Specification
MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 2QE Golden Edition:
    •   CPU: Core i7-4710HQ (2.5GHz – 3.5GHz)
    •   OS: Windows 8.1
    •   Display: 15.6″ WQHD+, IPS (2880*1620)
    •   Memory Supplied: 16G 2*8GB DDR3L 1600
    •   Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M GDDR5 3GB
    •   Storage: 2 x 256GB M.2 SSD + 1TB 7200RPM HDD
    •   Wireless Lan: Killer 802.11 a/c
    The Unboxing
It is a really big one, please do drive your car while buying this NB from the shop.
Inside the main brown shipping box, there are MSI stylish back bag and the a black branded carry case.
The back back is grey color with good material quality, it also a simple and fashion design which is suitable for young or stylish worker. The sense of touch is also good.
There are several layers inside the bag, even more, a shock-absorbing laptop sleeve in it. What a surprise!!
In the big black branded carry case. There are two black box, one is for accessory. One is for the main role “GS60” with sponge to protect it as you can see in the photo.
Let see the accessory box first, a MSI gaming mouse、a MSI/SteelSeries Flux headset、a keyboard protector and a mouse pad.
The mouse has red light shining on both side when it connect to the laptop. It’s really a gaiming stuff! We can also see the double braided cord that improved the durability.
As “+” and “-“ these buttons in the middle of the mouse, user can adjust the sensity of the mouse instantly by these two bottons in the game. No need to waste your time finding the adjument UI within the game. It is such a good benefit for a gamer.
The Flux headset has ear cushions with mesh-cloth material it let you feel comfortable when wear it. You also can find out the color of the shell beside the headset can be changed, one pair is MSI design in red color, the other one is pure black one.
It also has a convenient design that the earmuff can be folded, in order to make the headset into a plat one and easy to put in your bag.
The performance of the headset is high-end and highs that don’t get brittle. About the deep bass, it also quite stunning. Overall, it can make the music carry listener’s heart.
It deserves you to put it on the top of your gaming headset list.
Here we open another black box, the GS60 is packaging by the non-woven cloth.
There are also the power adaptor、power cord and mini displayport to D-sub cable.
By the way, the power adapter is 25.53 mm thick and 0.52kg. weigh, 19.5V and 7.7A output.
Moreover, there are instruction manuals、several driver CDs and even two military dog tag with MSI logo, actually I am not a military lover, so I am going to use them as a key ring but not to hang on my neck.
Finally, let us see a royal-like GS60 Ghost Pro Golden…
Using Mg-Li alloy as the material, its chasis gains the advantage of both ultra-light and solid.
According to MSI official website, the idea of design comes from the stealth fighter, so it shows dynamic streamline in its design. Beside the visual effect, it makes you feel comfortable when typing due to the slimmer front edge and solid palm rest. The high gloss finish and bright gold will reflect light, so it change color slightly in different lighting condition. Overall, it delivery supreme visual treat.
To see a more apparent golden color, I put it on my sofa with yellow background.
    Shinging and charming….
The fancy muscle curve and hire line surface make it elegant and gorgeous.
The shield and the MSI logo, they are delicated design without roughness.
The black color keycap contrast with the golden chasis apparently.
The touchpad looks cool as well, the material it made let the surface being anti-skidding and you wont leave your fingerprint on it.
It has Dynaudio speaker and Steelseries keyboard these two famous brand as it high-end equipment. 4 channel speakers and comfortable tactile keyboard. Moreover, the Graphics card it equiped is GTX 970M,
One of the lastest high-end Nvidia GTX graphics card. It is the first gaming notebook to equip GTX 970M .No doubt MSI regard themselves as the leader brand of gaming.
    Sound Blaster Cinema 2+Dyanudio, Bravo~~
Let’s check the connectivity of this beauty.
No ports but seried of cooling vents at the rear panel,in order to let air flow and palm rest feeling.
    being better.
The left side of it located the microphone (line out) and headphone (line in) jack, two USB 3.0 ports, the power connector socket and a security port. Also the vent close to the rear panel. The metal golden jack can isolate much more noice and enhance the reality of music as not being distortion.
The right side of GS60 located an USB 3.0 port, card reader, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI port, and GB LAN (RJ45). GS60 Ghost Pro can support 2 external moniotr with mini display and HDMI port. When playing PRG game, you can use the main one to play game, the other one can show a walkthrough. The last one, you can even use skype or outlook to connect others.
The front side you can see the LED to show some fuction status. Such as the battary status and bloothtooth has been turned on or not..etc.
From bottom of this notebook you can see the battery is not removable, I guess the idea probably come from iphone. In fact, I seldomly remove the battery when I using a laptop, unless it really heavy to carry. But this time, GS60 is not heavy, so it wont be a problem to me.
I used the scaler to measure the actual weight and ruler to see how thin it is, the result cames out 19.95mm thin and 2.1kg weight. Is it really a gaming machine I used to think of?! Such an ultra-book style.
As I know, all the gaming notebook used to be black and silver color, there are few gaming notebook with others color. MSI this time has find its way to make a breakthrough. Of course, the creative thinking and the adventurous action is what we need in gaming world!!
In a word, as you can see from the picture above ,the metallic feel of it is so attractive!!It is the most stylish and creative gaming notebook I have ever seen.
All of above are the unboxing of hardware part.let’ talk about some function and feature of this treasure.
Dragan Gaming Center which is preinstalled in this MSI laptop. With this application, you can monitor the status of the important elements in the system. You can also quick start a game or an utility through it.
Fn+F7="Shift", according to the official website, the key can be used to change the mode of the notebook in 3 status, the default "Sport"mode、"Comfort" mode and "Green mode", it is a adjustment function to control the CPU and GPU workload in order to balance the performance and temperature
Use "Shift" to switch the mode you prefer.
Green- System locks both GPU and CPU chip temp.
Comfort- System locks GPU chip temp and dynamic adjusts the GPU chip temp
Sport- Defaut and without any control.
I am not afraid about the high temperature and noise from fans, so I like to use the default one, Sport mode~
If you are playing a game in the library, please do choose Green mode to keep the fan from being busy.
The "Shift" is MSI exclusive function, the idea comes from the shifting gear in automobile.
Here comes another interesting feature, which is called Killer Double Shot Pro.With this function,
the GB LAN and Wireless LAN act like combined togather and user can acquire the bandwith from both.
    Killer Netwok Manager UI
This network technology also offers you a smooth background when playing game, because you can set the gaming applications as higher priority to use the bandwith than others. What a bravo feature!!
The highest resolution of GS60 Ghost Pro is 2880*1620 which is also called 3K,
as you can see from the screenshot below, when playing game you gain much more visual delight.
With the HDMI and mini display output, you can enjoy a 1+2 matrix display function.
With the XSplit Gamecaster preintalled in GS60, you can share your game just in time through live streaming while playing it. however, I won't use this function because I don't wanna share my skill to the others, hahaha~~
The Steal Series Engine, it is my favorite. You can set the keypress macro、text macro or lauch application just in one key. For example, while playing Leaque of Legend, we always need to press Q、W、E、R、T
immediately, but with keypress macro function, you can trigger them just in one key. Quite convient, isn't it?
You can also choose the color you want for the keyboard backlit with Steal Series Egine. This function shows the gaming feature indeed.
That's see the multi-color backlit of it. What a show off!!!
Below is the hardware information showed by Nvidia Experience UI and GPU Z
    GeForce GTX 970M with DDR5 3G and I7-4710HQ!!
    I can't wait to see the 3D MARK 11 P score...
Here it got P9272 at sport mode. Outstanding!!
For 3D MARK Fire Strike, it got 6515 at sport mode. I have to say that GS60 Ghost Pro punches above its weight.
The result of Valley Benchmark 1.0 is below, score 1560 and FPS is 37.3.
Testing the Call of duty Ghost with FRAPS, while play the game, it goes smoothly and the fps showed at top-left is around 100~200. As you can see the delicated scenery and character there, it seems like act in the reality.
The sequencial read of these two SSD is 1022MB/s, it features from the Super RAID technology. Applying the RAID 0 technical usually used in server into SSD to make the IOPS much better.
Take a look at its outward appearance again, bring it oudoor to see its color under natural light.
    Fantastic~~
I would like to say, the GS60 Ghost Pro Golden is Lamborghini in gaming laptop!! It will be all the rage.

This year, GTX970M performance is even better than 880M, with GS60's slim design, I can only say the advance of technology is so amazing!!!

  • No Boot with Performance Mode FAST

When I set Performance Mode other than SLOW (no matter if FAST or TURBO) my system won´t boot (all other settings default, D.O.C. DISABLED).
This happened with Bios v1.9 and also happens with Bios v1.7 (re-installed hoping it might solve the problem)
    NO way activating MAT/PAT
    Any help very appreciated
    System:
    MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R (MS-6728)

    LG DRD-8120B
    Tagan TG-380-U1 380W
    Windows XP HomeEdition SP-1

This might be a long shot...but try the following settings if you want PAT/MAT:
    Bios 1.9 for 865pe
    FSB=201
Vddr=2.70V, or higher if it doesn't work
Memory freq= AUTO (If you set it to 400 mhz you won't get MAT)
Performance Mode= TURBO (FAST increases AGP/PCI bus)
Timings= depends on you ram, set it manually to whatever specifications you have (If it still doesn't work, try setting to SPD)
If all of this doesn't work then set memory freq to 400Mhz and Performance mode Turbo, or Ultra Turbo and you WILL get higher performance even if you don't have PAT/MAT. Test this with Sandra and you will see that the memory bandwidth is almost as high as with PAT on.
Recommended: Install ClockGen and set it so that it loads with windows. Use it to set the FSB to 200 and AGP/PCI 66/33 for added stability.
Please post back to see if this works for you guys. Good luck!

  • Satellite L670-1JN - Fan activity and temperature

    Hello,
When my Satellite L670-1JN is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) with an ambiant temp 20C at wich temperaure approximately must be the processor?
At which temperature fan start and stop?
Power mode selected is normal with optimization of performance, with the power adapter.
    Thanks

Yes fan activity is control automatically but when my laptop is not in sleep mode and when no application is running (only OS) fan stop(30s) cpu temp increase from 36% to 40% and fan run(30s at 55%) temp decrease from 40% to 36%.
For this I used Health Monitor delivered with PC. Temps ig given in % so i can't know temperature in C.
Is it normal? ambiant temp is 20C.
    It's noisy.
I will prefer to have fan continuously on at lower speed.
Is it possible to change setting of fan and temperature except by changing the cooling method in Windows Power Management to battery optimized.
In this case noise increase fan stop(60s) cpu temp increase from 32% to 40% and fan run(60s at 90%) temp decrease from 40% to 32%.
My PC is newer I have not yet install other application so only OS is running.

This time we would like to share the latest version of MSI GT70 - The GT70 Dragon Edition.
The GT70 Dragon Edition totally changed with their box design, make it slimmer and with better looks of their dragon logo to impressed gamers and power users.
The ID design of GT70 Dragon Edition.
Compare with their regular GT70, the GT70 Dragon Edition use red metallic cover design with the Dragon Tattoo on it,
that makes GT70 more gaming style and high performance looks.
The metallic cover with normal light will be deep red, but the metal will reflect light of the color with different angle,
so the color of the red will be lighter when outdoor with sunshine.

34~38℃ when idle mode. (Cooler Boost on)
Run the InteBurn Test to make CPU with full loading - 73~86℃(Cooler Boost off)
Run the InteBurn Test to make CPU with full loading - 72~77℃(Cooler Boost on)
We use idle mode and full loading test to compare the Cooler Boost fan function to check difference.
The temperature difference of Cooler Boost on and off, it's about 2 degree when idle,
and biggest gap is 11 degree when CPU is full loading burning test, so the Cooler Boost really helps when users need it.
Besides the fan performance, about the noise of the cooler, it's not easy to hear the fan noise if Cooler Boost is off, and Cooler Boost will make the noise louder for sure.
But the noise is not high frequency that makes people uncomfortable, if you listen to the music or play games with Dynauido sound system, you will not hear the noise even you turn on the Cooler Boost.
Many notebooks with Dual Core will be 40℃ more when idle mode, and full loading will be 80~90 degree.
So the temperature of GT70 with Core i7 and GTX675MX is really well controlled, MSI did have good design skill on the thermal solution with small space inside the notebook.
Conclusion of MSI GT70 Dragon Edition:
    Pros:
    1. Dragon Edition makes the chasses with special coating with Dragon Tattoo, also improve the packing a lot. Upgraded hardware on GTX675MX and Killer Double Shot.

    4. Full size keyboard by Steelseries with back light, add on Turbo, Cooler Boost to boost up GPU and fan performance.
    5. Special 2 channel with 1 subwoofer design with Sound by Dynaudio system, the sound quality even better than previous version of GT70.

    7. Latest Killer Double Shot function, the LAN is faster and WiFi comes with 2x2 and 2.4GHz/5GHz dual band design.
    Cons:
    1. SSD will be better if use the Micron or Marvell control chip.
    2. Maybe IPS panel is more expensive, but still expect the GT70 could option with IPS panel in the future.
    3. The NVIDIA graphics driver still need to improve on Windows 8 system, some 3D benchmark or games still can't get good performance on GTX675MX with full speed.
    4. Recommend to use Creative Sound Core3D quad core sound chipset.

  • Mac Mini fan on high, UI frozen. Had to shut it off. Any way to tell what the problem was when I boot it back up?

I leave my Mac Mini on constantly as a HTPC. I came home after being at work all day to find the fan on high and the lock screen incredibly sluggish. I have no idea how long it was like that, it's never done anything like it before. I couldn't login because it was too slow, I had to force it to shut off. Is there any way to see what it could've been when I boot it up, such as log files or something like that? I was hoping to get in to see top or the activity monitor but as I said earlier, I wasn't able to log in.

I had TeamViewer 9 installed. The Preferences window that contained the Uninstall button would not open so I just moved the .app to the trash. Last night I:
Installed TeamViewer 10 as it was the latest version, I figured I had that one previously
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
Realized from the /private/var/db/receipts (I think) entries that I had TV9 installed previously, not 10
    Installed TeamViewer 9
Tried to uninstall TV9, found the broken preferences pane and remembered why I just deleted it in the first place
    Upgraded it to TV10
Uninstalled it using the preferences pane
I'll check on it tonight, but I think it's okay. I want to do a grep -r -i "teamviewer" / when I get back to see if anything is left behind.
