Excessive packaging for AppleCare for iPod?

Hi!
In general I've ben really happy with my Apple computer and iPod, but just last week I enrolled in the iPod "AppleCare" for an extended year (even though they try to sell it as "2 years" it's really only one year that you are buying on top of the one year you get just for buying the iPod.. but that's a different post).
I got a giant 14"X12"X4" package in the mail. Inside there was a bunch of packing material to "protect" the AppleCare box (which is only 9"X6"X.05"). Inside the AppleCare box are two pieces of paper telling me to enroll online.
Am I the only person who finds this not only ridiculous, but also environmentally and practically counter-productive!? There was no need for any of that packaging! I could have received the docs in a letter envelope! Even better, why not just send me a PDF file!?!? I have to purchase this online, then I have to register online, wo why not send me the info online too? There wasn't even an option to have this info delivered electronically! This kind of backward thinking and extremely excessive packaging is inexcusable for a company that says they "think different."

Why do you say SPAM? this is a legitimate question that I think ought to be answered. Aside from the environmental issues, it's a cost issue. All that shipping material and fees could easily be eliminated and I could be charged less money. Why doesn't Apple even offer electronic options?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as NEW.
If the basic troubleshooting steps don't work, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and probable replacement.

Good news and heads up - Apple is now selling Applecare for it's displays independent of purchase with a system. So, if you purchased your Apple Display separately and it is still within the one year warranty, you can purchase Applecare for it. The plan is $99 ($79 for Education Customers). It will extend the display's warranty and phone support to three years.

  • Getting ready for AppleCare phone talk tomorrow...

My new iMac arrived Friday. But, except for taking it out of the box, have done nothing yet.
Reason: I want to do it right from the get-go. And I am not all that confident in my computerese abilities. I intend to accomplish a couple of things with a *real live person* from AppleCare on the phone. (Reason for AppleCare versus Apple Discussion Forums? Not for the advice. Used them in the past and they were not as helpful as Discussion Forums, even downright wrong at times). But for now, I want to tie up an expert, keep him/her on the phone, until I get this all done the right way. Step-by-step. But the primary reason for AppleCare for three years? The hardware/labor protection.
So, to get going according to the little Apple book:
    1) Set-up. Did read the little book that came w the computer. By the way, a 21.5" ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB (whatever that means) iMac, 3.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB RAM, 2TB Serial ATA Drive (Again, whatever that means). This compares to my present iMac, specs below. Believe I will see an enormous difference.....particularly with my primary computer activity...home music recording (i.e. GarageBand).
By set-up, I mean what it said in the little book (hardly a manual):
    1) insert the power cord into the iMac and into an outlet (But don't turn the computer on yet? Really?);
    2) Connect Ethernet cable into iMac and into Modem (Should the modem be turned on, or off when hooking up? Does it make any difference?);
    3) Turn on wireless keyboard and mouse. (Does this mean the keyboard and mouse should not be turned on before the computer itself?);
    4) Press power button on iMac to turn it on (so, I guess you shouldn't turn the iMac "on" in step 1);
    5) use +Setup Assistant+ to Configure you Mac. This is where, as I understand, you transfer files/applications from the "old" computer onto this *"new one."* But.....if you choose not to do it now, you can accomplish the same by using +Migration Assistant+ later. Question: Which is the preferable method? _Setup Assistant_ to do transfers immediately, or _Migration Assistant_ to do it later?
    6) Customize you iMac and set you preferences.
These are the six steps the little Apple book lists to get you up and running.
Once up and running, is there a preferable way to hook up peripherals? (i.e. printer first?, keyboard/synthesizer, preamp, external hard drive, etc?)
Before my phone call, I want to be ready. Already have gone through the maze of cords behind my computer work station. To ensure that I can access the proper cords and cables when I'm on the phone with AppleCare.
*Should I have a Firewire cable ready?* To transfer stuff from my old iMac to the new one? Would seem so.
Is there anything else I should have available before I place my call? Don't want to waste their time, certainly not mine.
My other concerns about this new computer, and there have been a few, have already been addressed.....to my satisfaction here in Discussion Forums.
Very excited to get this thing up and running. And apprehensive. Want to make sure this iMac is what I ordered. Want to make sure everything is working. Just want to use it.
    Thanks everyone, in advance.

Seems that doing this is best done right away with Setup Assistant....as opposed to doing it later with Migration Assistant. Does this mean if I don't do it right away I can't use Setup Assistant later but am relegated to Migration Assistant?
Usually. (You can get to it later, but you'd have to erase your internal HD and reinstall OSX.)
And that lengthy narrative on Time Machine versus Time Capsule talks about "backing up" to a selected disc. How am I backing up when I'm thinking I'm just copying stuff onto my new computer. (Also, don't see any video there...the site you mentioned).
Yes, sorry, wrong link. Try this one: Time Machine Tutorial
Ignore (for now) all the stuff about backing-up. About 2/3 of the way through, there's a title on the screen: +Migrating to a new Mac.+ It shows how to do that from Time Machine backups, of course, but the first option on the +Do You Already Own a Mac?+ screen is to transfer from another Mac. That's what you want; otherwise the process is exactly the same, and very easy.
+Note that neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will replace newer Apple apps that came with the new Mac with older ones from your old one, so that's not a concern.+
That's really good to know. But how will I know the difference from, say: GarageBand 2 (older version) from the new GarageBand included in iLife '09? I think they'll both have the same guitar icon. Once both GB versions are on my new computer, could I simply rename the old GarageBand to GarageBand 2 and leave the new...with an icon that just says GarageBand... alone?
I don't know about GarageBand in particular; but most likely you'll have only the new one. If you do have two, you can always easily determine what version an app is. Either right-click it in the Applications folder and select +Get Info,+ or start it up and select the name of the app in the Menubar, then the +About <app name>+ option.
How would I differentiate between old and new iPhoto, iMovie, etc?
For those and most or all others, you'll only have the new version. OSX will automatically "convert" any old files to the new format, so all your previous stuff will work with the new one.
It seems that I have one chance at doing this. According to the little book that came with my new iMac: +The first time you turn on your iMac, Setup Assistant starts....If you don't use Setup Assistant to transfer information when you first start up, you can do it later by using Migration Assistant.+
It's really quite easy. Just take your time and it will be up and running fine in just a few minutes.
So this would have to be done before anything else, like hooking up my printer, or setting up the modem/internet?
Yes. Again, see the video (now that I gave you the right link). But you shouldn't have to do anything to set up your modem/internet, other than plug in the cable. It should just work. If your printer is compatible with Snow Leopard, it should just work, also.
Also note on the video link, there are a number of other video demonstrations available. After you get your shiny new Mac up and running, you might want to check them out, as there are some differences from Panther.
And you'll also want to explore backup strategies at some point, if you're not doing regular backups now.
Not to worry: it really is very quick and easy.

  • AppleCare for iBook

I realize that this is not directly an iBook question, but I could not find a topic for AppleCare for iBook...
What EXACTLY does the AppleCare warranty cover? I have another 340sum days left, and today I had a little incident. I had my iBook in my laptop backpack, and when I went to swing it onto my shoulder, the shoulder strap broke, making the laptop fall 6 feet onto the ground. I opened it up, found the Combo drive door stuck, and the iBook no longer boots <Floppy w/ ?>. I have tried booting while holding option, but it does not give me selections other than the HD icon. I am in dismay! Lost all my purchased Lost and Desperate Housewives shows and my schoolwork! I just need to know if my AppleCare warranty will cover accidental drops, or if it is broad enough to blanket that subject?

No. AppleCare does not cover "accident or abuse."
Rachel R has written a great FAQ on Is phone support and warranty service free?, which you may want to check out.
Download the PDF's on AppleCare from this page.

  • $100 rebate for AppleCare?

Anyone think the $100 rebate for AppleCare for the iPhone at $69.00 is worth it? I am also going to get an Apple Bluetooth headset as a gift for my B-Day and it says
    "Comprehensive service
Extends hardware coverage to two years from the date of iPhone purchase.
Covers iPhone, iPhone Bluetooth Headset, and all included accessories."
So to me this seems logical to cover both accessories.... Any thoughts?
Also since the headset was not purchased with the iPhone will it still be covered? I.E. a gift three months later?

I signed up for Pro Care when I bought my iMac in January. My new iPhone came with a 30-day trial period for One-to-One. I have used the Pro Care a few times and the One-to-One once. I feel like using part of your rebate for Apple Care will be a worthwhile investment if you believe that you will use the service.
I will not renew my Pro Care in January just because I have not needed the service much. If I had a MacBook or a MacBook Pro I would probably use it all the time but I don't want to haul my iMac to the store.
You might check out the reviews of the Apple Bluetooth prior to purchasing one. To me the jury is still out. About one-half of the reveiews were positive and the other half hated the device. I purchased a Plantronics Explorer 340 and love it!
You will have to make the decision on the "comprehsive service." Only you can determine whether you feel like you need the additional coverage.
    Good luck with your decision.

  • Does Applecare for Macbook/iBook work with uMB?

As the titles says, i just bought a AppleCare for Macbook/iBook from eBay. Is this guaranteed to work with my Unibody Macbook 2.0ghz? Late 2008 model. Thanks

Guaranteed? No, probably not on eBay. But if you are shipped the correct (and genuine) part for AppleCare for MacBooks AND the registration number in the AppleCare box hasn't been used yet, it should work when you go to register.
The source on eBay may or may not be reputable. Caveat emptor applies.

  • Question about buying Applecare for iPod online

When I purchased my iMac I purchased Applecare from my dealer, getting the little red box to bring home, and later I registered the Applecare online successfully.
Now I wish to purchase Applecare for a 5G iPod that is nearing it's 1 year anniversary. Because of timing I thought I would go to the online Apple store and purchase it that way. Proceeding through the steps, however, it looks like I can just order it online and have the little red box shipped to my home (for later online registration.) That worries me in case the package doesn't arrive in time to meet the requirement to do this within the first year.
Is there no way to purchase online, pay with credit card, and be sent to the online registration area immediately, without waiting for the little red box? (My dealer is out of Applecare boxes at the moment.)
20" Intel Core Duo iMAC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Thanks again, Chuck
I am still having trouble with this. First, I am in Canada so go to the equivalent Canadian Apple web site and it is laid out slightly differently.
So I followed your steps to see how the US site differed and didn't see a "sale" graphic but instead a "save" graphic. (I assumed that's the one you meant) so I followed that path and indeed did find the Applecare for iPod link. I started to go through the steps there, but as far as I was going it looked exactly like what happens on my Canadian site where it ends up asking me for the shipping address and my Visa number and I get to chance to register directly.
But the local dealer that I use, has some coming in this week and will hold one for me, which should be in time. If something happens to delay that shipment there are other dealers in town I can try as well.

  • AppleCare for iPod Question

Hi, last month my on/off button of my iPod touch just broke.
So I take it to Apple store and they gave me a new one.
The question is . . . If I buy an applecare for ipod, which serial number should I apply with?
The old one? or a new one?

    Thank you ! !
    Very quick reply.

Applecare has nothing to do with a lost or stolen device.
You would have to buy a new ipod.

  • AppleCare question for 5th gen iPod...

I bought my iPod about a year ago and recently just bought my first Mac computer with AppleCare.
Well, I wasn't aware of Applecare before this and now I wish I would've done my research and purchased it with my Ipod.
I noticed you can purchase AppleCare separately for whatever device yo have from Apple but my question is...
Can I buy AppleCare for my Ipod even though I bought it so long ago?
    Thanks all

    Hi MikeBook Pro,
You must purchase AppleCare within the standard one year warranty period. An Apple Store employee also told me was that you must purchase it the day before the on year mark (Example- bought the iPod July 3rd, must purchase AppleCare before July 2nd of the next year).
    hope this helps,
    -Brian Skorski

  • Applecare for ipod touch

worth getting an applecare for ipod touch?
can i still use an unopened/unregistered Applecare for ipod (orange box) for the ipod touch?
    thanks a lot

I disagree with Jordan. I think AppleCare well worth the cost. If the battery dies during the second year you own the iPod, the cost of replacing the battery out of warranty would more than cover the cost of AppleCare which covers the battery in iPods. AppleCare also provides you two full years of phone support should you have a question (the standard warranty provides 90 days of free support). Not to mention the cost of any other repairs (even if the warranty still applies, after 180 days you have to pay shipping if you have to send in your iPod, which you don't if you have AppleCare). So to my mind, it's cheap peace of mind.

  • AppleCare for iPod Classic?

I'm in the market for an 80 gig iPod Classic and was wondering if it's worth the $60 for AppleCare. I have it on my MacBook Pro and it's come in handy for battery issues but am wondering if anyone can say if it's worth it for the iPod.
    Thanks!

If you have minimum experience with troubleshooting an iPod, it very well may be worth it. The one thing you have to remember is that you only have the one free phone call for help with troubleshooting, after that you have to pay. I bought a 160GB right after the holidays & didn't buy AppleCare as I felt pretty comfortable due to helping on these boards for over 3 years that I could handle most common problems that the iPod might have.
AC did save my socks on my 2 1/2 year old G5 as I lost the HD about a month ago which was replaced at no charge with AC.

  • Any hope for water damaged iPod?

The iPod received a sprinkle of water and worked fine for several hours after.  Then I could no longer turn it on....I am assuming it is the water.  Any other explanation possible?

Place the iPod is a sealed container with a desiccant like uncooked rice for a week. Periodically change the rice.
    If it does not work
Unless you purchased the optional AppleCare+ extended warranty
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $99 for 16 GB 5G and $149 for the other 5Gs. They do not fix yours.

  • Applecare+ for Verizon iPhone 4s

There is no provision to purchase Applecare + with a new pre-ordered iPhone 4s on the Verizon site. What provisions will Apple make for those who purchased their 4s this way?
The ordering process puts one in a catch-22: if you attempt to get a Family Plan through the Apple site, you are told that you must purchase your phone at the Apple Store. If you order the phone through Verizon, Applecare+ is not an offered option.
Will Apple make it possible for new Verizon iPhone 4s customers to get the Applecare+ coverage?

After speaking with the tech support person from Apple, I received an email which said:
    "Dear Apple Customer,
Thank you for your recent iPhone purchase at the Apple Online Store.
We would like to let you know that every iPhone comes with one year of
hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to
90 days of complimentary support. AppleCare+ for iPhone extends your
coverage to two years from the original purchase date of your iPhone
and adds up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each
subject to a $49 service fee.
We noticed you weren’t given the opportunity to add AppleCare+ to your
iPhone. If you would like to extend your coverage for only $99, please
    reply to this email.
Thank you for shopping with Apple.
    Sincerely,
    Apple Online Store Team"
So I replied to the email and now when I look at my iPhone 4S order, the AppleCare+ package is now included. Has anyone else gotten that email?
