Excessive re-rendering using Nikon D7000 clips

I just started using the Nikon D7000 clips in my final cut project and now every single edit requires rerendering. Why? And what can I do to avoid all this extra rerending time? I've been using Final Cut Express for a couple of years with footage off a Canon Vixia and I could do 90% of my editing without the need for rerendering. My workflow now includes syncing seperate audio files with the mov files using Dual Eyes. If I can't fix this outrageous rendering time I'm gonna have to ditch the DRSL idea and go back to the Canon. Is there anybody out there that knows what I'm talking about?

Thank you so much for this tip! I just downloaded MPEG Sreamclip and brought in a clip from the Nikon. I used the "Export to QuickTime" option and then chose the "Apple Intermediate Codec." I hope those were the correct steps. I brought the newly exported clip into Final Cut and I see that I can move it around the timeline and shorten it and such and it doesn't require rerendering. I'm doing a happy dance!

I think I need plug-in.  Please let me know.  Thank you.

Well, the Nikon D7000 footage cannot be logged and transferred.  There is no plugin for that like there is for the Canon cameras. Nikon never developed one.  So the footage from that camera will need to be converted with Compressor or MPEG STREAMCLIP.
The JVC should work...what version of FCP are you on?

  • Problems shooting in tethered capture with Lightroom 4.4 using Nikon D7000.

I've been shooting in tethered capture mode for about one year with few problems until recently. I'm using Lightroom 4.4 in conjuction with a Nikon D7000.  Operating system is Windows 7, 32 bit.    I'm now getting a dialog box mssg stating: "A captured file could not be saved.  Your drive may be full, or may no longer be accessible."   Both of the drives that I use have tons of remaining storage space available.  Any suggestions on how I should start the trouble shooting process with this problem would be greatly appreciated!

Files are being saved to being saved to the hard drive of my computer (Windows 7, 32 bit operating system) and to and external hard drive.  As I mentioned both drives have plenty of additional storage space available.  I should also mention that many times when attempting Tether Capture the dialog box stating "A captured file could not be saved" does not appear at all.  At those times Lightroom simply does not recognize the camera.
Thus far I have taken the following steps as instructed in "Lightroom Help / Troubleshoot teetered capture in Lightroom" :
       1.  Make sure that you're using the most recent version of Lightroom - DONE
       2.  Make sure that your camera is supported (did this previously at the time I started using tethered capture).
       3.  Turn the camera on and off - DONE
       4. Turn off the camera and the computer -DONE
       5.  Try a different USB cable and USB port -DONE
       6.  Check your hard disk for space - DONE
       7.  Reset Lightroom preferences - DONE
       8.  Make sure your camera's firmware is up to date - DONE
       9.  Close applications that could be causing a conflict -  DONE
    10.  Check that the transfer mode in the camera is set appropriately - DONE
    11.  Search Adobe Community Help for a support document on your camera - DONE
    12.  Try tethered shooting with another application -  I TRIED TETHERED SHOOTING ON A DIFFERENT
COMPUTER AND IT WORKED JUST AS IT SHOULD.
I'm wondering if the problem I am having is related more to the operating system than to Lightroom.  I say this because at the time that I first set up tethered capture there were some obstacles related to the Windows 7 operating system that I had to overcome.
At any rate I need additional ideas - this is driving me crazy!

  • Which Raw plug-in using Nikon D7000 and Photoshop Elements 7 for importing NEF files?

Cannot import NEF files from Nikon D7000.
Which Raw plug-in is avalible for Adobe Photoshop Elements 7? According to Help sites version 6.3 is needed, But is it kompatible with Elements /??
    Please help!

It’s not possible to update PSE7 beyond ACR 5.5. You have two alternatives:
    1) Upgrade to PSE 10. 2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 6.5
Mac download click here DNG Converter 6.5

  • Shooting with Nikon D7000 the color is awful. Where do i begin?

The clips generated from the recently new Nikon D7000 are very hard to correct. I've been using the 3-way color corrector in FCP for years and nothing seems to work on the nikon movie files. The skin tones are flat and almost gray. the over all color is lifeless. And shadow detail is lost even though the image is largely over exposed. Anyone else having this trouble. Of course I am editing these clips alongside clips from the Canon 5D Mark ll.

I have to be more specific the original Nikon D7000 clips are too yellow and too blue which makes green I can't do anything to make these look good. ahhh!

  • Camera Raw for Elements 7 enabling use of Nikon D7000

I use Elements 7 with Camera Raw 4.5 I now wish to edit RAW
images from a Nikon D7000. How do I go about obtaining the r
elevant Camera Raw download for use with Elements 7 which will enable me to view and process
    Nikon D7000 RAW images?

The last version of Adobe Camera RAW that PSE7 will work with is ACR 5.6, and that does not support the newer D7000.
Either buy PSE9, or download the latest DNG Converter 6.3 and convert your NEFs to DNGs and open those with the older ACR.
You can get the downloads for both ACR 5.6 and the DNG Convert 6.3 by going to http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/ and using the dropdown at the top to find Camera RAW for your computer type.  If you update Camera RAW then be sure to use the PSE-specific instructions on the page or in the readme.  The DNG Converter is a standalone program that operates on an entire folder of RAWs at a time.

  • How can I edit a Nikon D7000 .nef file using Photoshop Element 8?

In order to read and edit a picture taken in RAW format by a Nikon D7000, using Photoshop Element 8, what should I do?  Any plug in that I should download?

The D7000 was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw 6.3 which is compatible with Elements 9 or later

    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
Either upgrade to Elements 12 or use the Adobe DNG converter to convert D7000 Raw files to DNGs then edit the DNGs in Elements 8.

  • I have LR 5.3 it changes my RAW files to NEF.  What is happening?  I am using a Nikon D7000

I am using a D7000 Nikon.  I shoot my photos in RAW.  However,  LR 5.3 changes my photos to NEF.  What is this?

You bet E2C, and for correctness/completeness (not that it probably matters), Nikon also has NRW (raw-only, I think) format.
The point was that you can save *any* file in NX2 as NEF and have the same "original+(editing-instructions-as-metadata) thing" as Lightroom has via "original+xmp".
For the spirit of your original post probably none of this matters, so sorry if I've overwhelmed. It's just a common misbelief that NEFs are always raw, so I sometimes like to correct it when I see it - a little type-A maybe I am .
As I said before NEFs from cameras are always raw (I think).
    Cheers,

  • Nikon D7000 and FCE

Hello, just for starters I am using this process for home video's
    I am new to FCE, and wanted to learn the best conversion settings from a Nikon D7000 h.264 compression to FCE. {for example the simplest way to convert multiple clips into FCE at the best possible quality}
    1. is there a plug in for FCE or a recommended software for this conversion?
    2. I am shooting HD {1,920×1,080 / 24 fps most of the time} I see this is not recommended
    What is the downside for shooting with these other setting {this would be from the... isn't "bigger is always better" side of my brain:}
    HD 1,280×720 / 24 fps
    HD 1,280×720 / 30 fps
    Thank you in advance

    1. You convert to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec. Maintain the original frame size.
    Thanks this is helpful!!
    A. My main concern is the footage I already have is 1920 x 1080 {1080p} is 23.97fps, and how to convert it..... {what does "depending on where you are" change? either 25fps or 29.97fps}
    2. "I don't know is the 720p media your camera shoots is actually 30fps or 29.97fps."
---So are you recommending I shoot in 720P moving forward?
Here all all the settings for the D7000
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Format (.MOV file container)
    1920 x 1080 {1080p} is 23.97fps
    1280 x 720 is {720p} is 29.97fps NTSC, or 25fps PAL, or 23.97 fps PAL/NTSC

  • Matching my Nikon D7000 preview

I am having real trouble getting Phtoshop/Raw to mimic the colouring on the preview screen of my Nikon D7000.
The preview screen is accurate to my eye, for colour rendition, but when I import the raw files and edit using RAW/CS5, I cannot get the colours to match.
This tends to happen in sunsets in particular, where dusky pinks are not rendered correctly, ending up too orange in hue.
I have tried many editing changes, hue/saturation/camera profiles etc. but cannot get it to match.
Any help / advice gratefully received.
    Graham

Try to read books and tutorials, as well as to watch video tutorials, on Camera Raw and Photoshop.  Google and you'll find a lot of them.
The best of the books were the Real World Adobe Camera Raw series from Jeff Schewe (initially with the late Bruce Fraser). They stopped releasing them after CS4 or CS6.
Jeff Schewe has one now called the Digital Negative, I believe.
Adobe TV could have good video tutorials too.

What you are asking for in your last post is practically to be taught ACR and Photoshop from the ground up, and that exceeds the scope of any forum.
One other important factor to keep in mind is that you are leaving a lot of image quality behind if you are converting your raw files in a version earlier than ACR 7.4, which requires at least CS6 to run.  The current version is ACR 8.6.
It's a shame not to get the best quality you can from your Nikon camera.

  • Lookiing for a native file from nikon d7000 to try in Final Cut Express

I am sorry if this is not forum appropriate, but does anyone have a native .mov file from a nikon d7000 that they can email me so that I can learn how to use it in FCE? If not, does anyone know where I can find one? I want to buy one someday, but it's ease with FCE will be a deciding factor. If nobody has one from a d7000, maybe another dslr from nikon (if they are all the same). Thanks. My email is [email protected] Thank you.

    Hi -
If you would like to download some sample scenes, there is an excellent review and 4 downloadable files (huge) at dpreview.com:
    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond7000/page18.asp
*The problem is that all 4 files are shot in the 24 fps mode, which prevents them from being useable in FCE.* You need to find a clip source that is shot in the 29.97 mode to use the file in FCE.
The image quality looks, excellent, however.
To download the file, control-click on the thumbnail of the file and select "Download linked file as . . ." from the drop down menu.

  • Nikon D7000 to Final Cut Express 4 for dummies?

I am a recent owner of a Nikon D7000 and also FCE4 HD. I wish to use FCE to edit the videos I shoot with this camera. I've seen some discussions on how I need to first convert the video clips to a format that FCE can use because it apparently cannot process the .MOV files.
My problem is that I haven't found any discussions that explain what I need to do in a basic, step-by-step response. Please keep in mind that I know nothing about frame rates and all the technical jargon. I just want to know how to get the best results from the camera in order to get it into FCE to edit it. Big learning curve here.
I've downloaded MPEG Streamclip because I've read that I need that in order to convert something to something else, but that's as far as I've gotten...
Please, can someone help to explain this process in simple terms for a dummy like me?

Ok, FCE update done. I read that I should shoot in 1280x720;30fps instead of 1920x1080;24fps... so I switched the movie settings in the camera and shot a sample clip.
So, using the Quicktime Player Movie Inspector, I get the following info:
H.264, 1280x720, Millions Linear PCM, 16-bit little endian signed integer, 2 channels, 48000 Hz
    29.97 FPS
    55.1 MB
    17.06 Mbit/s
    1391x782 pixels
    What now?

  • Nikon D7000 & CS5.5

This one has me a little stumped.
A producer I work with has recently purchased a Nikon D7000 camera.  We have a major project coming up, so we decided to run some tests of the footage and Premiere Pro 5.5, as we'll probably want to take advantage of the new Merge Clips feature..  The results are more than a little disappointing (and confusing).
The camera uses H.264 compression in an MOV container.  (Bleck!  I feel dirty just having that foul Apple junk on my system.  But that's another issue.)  It produces stand alone files, no folder structure to worry about.  Playback in 5.5 is very choppy, regardless of Playback Resolution.  Export takes about 3X real time, and uses less than 20% CPU cycles, whether doing it directly or through AME.
The same clips in the same sequence play smooth as butter in 5.0.3.  They export faster than real time using 100% of the CPU, both directly and through AME.
Both DV and RED clips seem to play fine in 5.5.
I'm not sure what to make of this 5.5 degradation.  Any ides out there?

    Glad that  helped.
I wish ADOBE would  create a web based database that someone could check their camera and see how it  works with Premiere.  I know Premiere isn't made for every camera out there but  sometimes that is what the client or friend brings you.
Little things like just  changing the .MOV to .MPG and now something works would help allot of  people.
Maybe Todd or someone  else could make a help page for us giving suggestions for the best way to bring  in footage from different cameras.
Im sure it was set up  some of the mods here wouldn't mind running it and adding to  it.
Anything to make it  easier for new people to use Premiere is better in the long  run.
    Enjoy:   GLenn
