Excessive use of Disk Space

I noticed today that the Apple Software update is using 452MB of disk space and it appears it's captured every update for iTunes, Quicktime and Safari since I've started to use it.
/c/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Apple Computer/Installer Cache
/c/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Apple/Installer Cache
There appears to be no way to purge the cache via the Apple Update Software, but i guess the old-school method works.
Anyone higher than 452MB in their Installer Cache

Thanks for those who replied. The idea was to write a technical paper and write a supporting tool that will list all unused indexes on a Oracle database and list indexes that were used and if so, how they were used and when. I am working on a project basically.
Referencing papers aren't difficult. I can always do that. But we all being DBA's, there are one or the other issues that we would come across in day to day work. If i can reflect any of the real time problems and try to address it in my tool, it would be beneficial for all.
So that was the motto. Also, it's not only for Oracle. I am trying to write a tool that can possibly integrate with other databases such as SQL server and Sybase.
Thanks

  • "Create alternate versions without using extra disk space" Really?

"Create alternate versions without using extra disk space" says Apple. But is that really true? Because, from what I understand, for Aperture's OS Integration (with the Media Browser) to work, Aperture has to render Previews of all your photos first. So, any alternate versions that you create, do exist on your Hard Drive in the form of an actual file (e.g. a JPEG).

As Ian notes, it's smaller than a RAW - also smaller than an alternate PSD you might make, or duplicating a background layer in a PSD.
Also though, you don't have to have previews for everything - I find what I do is leave automatic preview generation turned off and then just generate previews for images that I like the end result of. This lets you explore alternate versions with essentially no addition space used.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • Does filevault use more disk space?

Does filevault use more disk space than when not using it?  I'm running an SSD drive and need to keep usage to a minimum.  Thx

The difference is about 200 MB, regardless of the size of the volume.

  • Does increasing Exchange Storgage Quota use more disk space immediately?

Exchange does not use the space immediately, it just allows each mailbox to grow up to that size.
I would consider carefully before increasing the quota limit. One of the reasons for having a quota is to keep mailboxes to a manageable size. Every GB of size costs a heck of a lot more than just the GB on the spindle.

    Hi
The current policy is a 20Gb limit. Thanks to a post I made in this forum, I know that 21 of the users are nearing this limit.
Now I can increase the limit for those 21. Or I can change the policy to 25Gb for everyone. If I increase it to 25Gb for everyone, does Exchange use the disk space immediately? Lets say I had 1000 Gb free, and 150 users. Does increasing by 5Gb mean that 5x150 = 750Gb is now allocated? Or does exchange use the disk space as required?
    Thanks

  • IPod shows as camera and will not let me use as disk space. Please Help!!

Okay, so i know that this has probably been asked before, but every similar question i read was a little different from my specific problem. Maybe someone on here can help me. :)) *crosses fingers*
I've had my iPod Touch since summer, and I just got a new laptop for Christmas. So I want to transfer my iTunes over to my new computer, of course. I read the tutorial on Apple Support, but when I went to drag my Library over to my iPod, it was showing up in My Computer as a camera, and will not let me use it as disk space. I've also followed the steps to stop the automatic Camera pop-up when I plug in my iPod. Yes, my iPod is set up on manual, so disk use SHOULD be enabled, correct? I am positive that I also have the latest iTunes software. AND my USB ports are up to date.
Sorry for the overly-thorough problem description, but I have read too many of the similar posts, and I know all the usual suggestions. But seriously, any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Sorry to say that you cannot use an iPod Touch as an "external" drive, unlike the "Classic" etc. which I believe have this feature.
To transfer your library you will have to back it up to disc(s), a different type of HD or use a network to send the files over.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • Using up disk space

When I work on a project, I have gotten into the habit of creating a duplicate of the project prior to beginning edits, so if I have to go back I can grab the duplicate. As I progress I have duplicate 1, duplicate 2, etc.  Eventually I get a notice that I am our of hard drive space, so I eliminate the duplicates.  I am somewhat confused, however, since I thought projects were only markers to the media and therefore used up little disk space.  Could there be something else using up the disk space?  I thought once I had imported my media, that there would be very little disk space used until my project was finalized, and I always make sure I have at least 100 or so gigs available after my media is imported.  It is clear to me that I do not yet understand the basis upon which FCPX is working and any enlightenment would be appreciated as to how I can avoid that reocurring message when working on my projects "You are almost out of disk space"  requiring me to stop and clear disk space.

Depending on what you are doing within FCP X and the type of footage used 100 gig can disappear pretty fast.
HD footage grabs around 40 gig an hour plus any render files that is created along the way.
My guess is render files are accumulating.
Have a look in the top level of the drive where the Project is stored to check out the current size.
    Final Cut Projects>Project Name>Render files.

  • Deleted files still using up disk space

Long story. Transferred 30Gb of mpegs from my wife's laptop to mine via firewire target disk mode on wife's machine. Logged off to disconnect and when I unplugged, got the disk wasn't ejected error. I thought it was. I had deleted the 30G from my wife's hd before disconnecting. Now, the files are gone from the desktop, but the disk space didn't free up. Still shows only 6 GB free. If I hook it up as a target disk, it shows the 36 free, but when running on its own, only 6 is free. I've repaired permissions, executed all maintenance scripts, repaired disk, verified disk, and run every test in Tech Tool Pro 4 with no help. Turned on invisible files, force emptied the trash with Cocktail, still no help. If you add up the size on all the folders, it gives 30GB less than the drive itself says is used. Where are those files and how do I get the space back?

Sure hope you aren't afraid of Unix...
From the wife's Mac, open Terminal (applications / utilities / Terminal)
For all of these type in's I say to do, do whats inside the quotes and not the quotes themselves. Or do a copy and paste if you aren't sure on a letter... And press Return after you type them in.
    Type in "cd /"
    Type in "ls -al"
You should see a .Trashes in here at the top of the list.
    Type in "cd .Trashes"
Type in "ls" here and see what you get. It will probably be a folder named 501 for the admin account from your Mac.
If so, do an "rm -R /.Trashes/501/"
    and watch your disk space.
If it complains to you that you don't have permissions, you will have to type in "sudo rm -R /.Trashes/501/"

  • FAT32: Unable to use whole disk space

    Hello everybody
I recently bought a 8GB USB flash disk. I created a fat32 filesystem (using mkfs.vfat) on the whole drive (/dev/sdb1).
    # mkfs.vfat -F 32 -n katana /dev/sdc1
df -h shows approximately 8GB available, but when I try to extract an archive on the disk, the kernel raises No space left on device exceptions at about 812MB of occupation, and df stills show plenty of space available.
I tried with an other (brand new) usb drive (not the same model), and I got exactly the same error, st 812MB.
I tried to reformat using different softwares, I even tried with windows (through a vm). I just don't know what to do...
    Thanks by advance

And how do I do that? using dd and /dev/zero on the main device file (/dev/sdc, according to my first post)?

  • Why are my matched songs with downward arrow using mac disk space

I have 1159 songs in my iTunes library which takes up over 16 GB of space on my macbook air SSD. Of those 499 are matched with 451  showing "matched" as well as the cloud icon with a downward arrow which I thought meant that they were not stored locally and needed to be streamed.  So why are those 451 taking up 4.13 GB of precious SSD space. The same situation exists with my purchased and uploaded songs which make up the other 11 GB of SSD space. If I try to delete the song I get:
“Are you sure you want to delete this item from iCloud? This will delete this item from all your iTunes Match devices".
Maybe I don’t understand iTunes Match but I thought one of the advantages  was that it freed storage space on your macs and iOS deices.

So now I have completed deleting the duplicates. I’m not sure it made any difference because now the 39 songs which were greyed out and waiting have uploaded and I still have over 14GB of iTunes on my completely full macbook air SSD
58 songs are downloaded using 484.6 MB which is fine.  It is the other 908 songs showing the cloud with the downward arrow which take up 13.83 GB that I want to get rid of.  The only problem is that if I try to delete them I get the message:
“ Are you sure you want to delete this item from iCloud? This will delete this item from all of your iTunes Match devices.”
So how can I delete them and leave them on iCloud?
I did try something you recommended elsewhere, holding down the SHIFT and turning off iTunes Match and then adding the computer again, but there was no improvement.

  • Use more disk space from 8K block_size to 16K block_size

Can some one answer my question, I have instance A (8K block_size), create a new Instance B (16K block_size), export (FULL) from Instance A, Import (FULL) onto Instance B.
I was wondering if changing from 8K instance to 16K instance will take more space.
I compared the tablespaces from both Instances (A & B), they seem to be the same.
Can any one help me in thise area, because I need to plan for future 16K instances and need to plan for more space if required.
    Thanks

    Hi Patrick,
I was wondering if changing from 8K instance to 16K instance will take more space. No, not if you "half" your PCTFREE to have the same reserved space as 8k.
    For example, pctfree=10 is 800 bytes on 8k blocks, but pctfree=10 is 1,600 bytes on a 16k block . . .
Also, MAKE SURE you don't hit this UGLY BUG in 16k blocksizes:
    http://www.oraclealchemist.com/oracle/hey-guys-does-size-matter/
"The final result: When the update was run against the 16k blocksize DB, it took 45 minutes. Against the 4k blocksize DB on the same box with the same parameters and the same FS mounts, it took 2 minutes 20 seconds."
Also, see these important notes on using non-standard blocksizes:

    Hope this helps . . .

  • T61 or Windows Vista used up disk space so fast ?

    Hi,
Just purchase a new T61 with 140GB hard disk running Windows Vista Business.  After installing Office 2007 Standard and Acrobat v8 Standard.  I realized that I am left with only 13.5GB space.
My personal data/files only take up about 20-25GB, including email files. What happen to all the storage space ?  Does Windows Vista take up large storage space that "eats up" all my space. ?
    Can someone help.  thanks.

    Hi,
I tried to load Rescue and Recovery console.  But not able to find the automatic backups option you mentioned ?  Where can I find this automatic backup option ?
But when I check for Properties of the hard drive.  Under the "Previous Versions" tab which looks like many duplicate backup.  Is this the automatic backups you are referring to ?

  • 10GB of disk space mysteriously used overnight.

    Hi all,
I left my MacBook on today when I went out, and it reported 27.99GB of space free, and I came home to find I have 17.34GB of space remaining. I've not installed anything or done more than open Safari and iTunes. Given I'd just been on a data purge to free up some space, I'm not terribly happy about losing 10GBs of space. Anyone know what might have happened to use up disk space so quickly?

Update: Using JDiskReport, I can see that 9.8GB of files were modified yesterday, yet they don't turn up in Spotlight searches.

  • Music is on an external hard drive how to transfer to iPod without using disk space on MacBook

    Hi
I just brought a new iPod as my last one broke and I was wondering if there was a way to transfer my music currently stored on an external hard drive on to the iPod without having to have it using up disk space on my MacBook.
I was told in the Apple store by a sale guy that you can do this by creating a playlist in iTunes and dragging the music files in from the hard drive. He said it wouldn't be stored on the MacBook and the playlist could only be accessed (or music played on the macbook) when the hard drive was connected. But when we tried this it started transferring ALL of the music from the hard drive onto the main iTunes library and subsequently onto the disk space on the MacBook.
    Can someone help me :-)

The sales guy does not know what he's talking about...
Open iTunes preferences Advanced tab.  Uncheck the box for Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.  Click OK.
Now, when you add those songs to your iTunes library, iTunes will access the song files from the external drive, where they are currently located.  And you can sync them to your iPod.

  • How to use VM server's disk space to store VM?

    Hi!
I've installed Oracle VM Server on my Sun Server. The server has 4 hard drives, which are combined in RAID 10.
The final disk space is approximately 600 gigabytes. This is df command's output:
    Filesystem
Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda2
    50G  1.2G   46G   3% /
    tmpfs
    666M     0  666M  0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda1
    477M   47M  401M  11% /boot
    none
    666M   40K  666M   1% /var/lib/xenstored
For the needs of the server uses about 50 gigabytes of disk space.
Oracle VM server Installation and Upgrade Guide says:
Partitioning is performed automatically by the installer, and you do not have
the option to define how partitions should be created on the drive during the
installation process. Partitions are created in such a way that only the maximum
amount of disk space required to run Oracle VM Server is attributed to the
partition where it runs. A separate partition is created for any remaining disk
space to be used as a discoverable local disk that can be used to host a
repository or assigned to any virtual machine that runs on the Oracle VM Server.
So where is this separate partition, that I can use to server pool and storage repository in OVMM?
I want to use free disk space to share it using NFS. Later I use these NFS shares to create server pool and storage repository.
    Thanks!
    Konstantin

    Hi Konstantin,
you should not use a OVS to export NFS shares to create a server pool or storage repo on it. Such shares should come from a dedicated NFS server, especially, if you plan on ever configuring a sever pool with multiple OVS. The point it, if you're using an OVS to act also as the NFS server for your server pool and storage repo, you will make it impossible to restart that one OVS, due to tha fact that you'd blow up your OVM cluster.
If you only want to run a single server pool, then nothing prevents you from usind fdisk on the OVS itself and claim the remaining drive space, by making it available as a /dev/sda3
    Cheers,
    budy
