Exchange 2003 Address List Funny
Hi all.
Just a quick one. I am having a little funny on our exchnage 2003 bridge head server. I just picked it up now when editing an address list. I have created a new address list and when I choose the filter option and choose find, it doesnt find any exchange
servers.
I found out tho it is something to do with DNS.
We have 2 network cards in this Exchnage server. One connected to an internet firewall and one LAN connected to the internal network.
I have no DNS settings on the internal card but have edited the host file with all my domain controllers and exchange server names and IP addresses. I have 2 public DNS server IPs on the WAN side LAN card.
I have done this as sometimes when the internet goes down our internal DNS server cant resolve IPs (Obviously) and no emails get delievered. if I take the Dns settings out the WAN card and put the normal internal DNS ip on the LAN card connected to the internal
network it fixes the issue.
Can i have an internal DNS on the LAN card connected to the internal network, as well as the ISP Dns servers on the WAN side card ?
Many thanks for your time.
Shaun
Isn't your internal DNS server able to resolve names in other domains? Unless you've turned off the "recursive lookups" and haven't provided forwarders you should need only DNS on your internal NIC.
As to your use of a HOSTS file, how are you able to deal with the need to use SRV records? Do you still see your DCs listed in the 2080 Event-IDs with the source "MSExchangeDSAccess" in the Applications event log?

Is there a way to remove Exchange global address list from phone/Mail app?
I have an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.3. Wondering if there is a way I can prevent an Exchange global address list from loading when I compose a message. I am only syncing Mail - not contacts or calendars. Also tried dropping and re-adding account to see if that did anything. This is a personal phone connected to company's Exchange account (legitimately) - I would like to reduce the chance that I incorrectly email a company employee from my personal account when composing a message.
That is what I expected Chris, but to answer your question - yes. I have two accounts setup with the Mail app - Gmail and Exchange. Gmail is the default even. When I am in the Gmail account, compose a new message, just typing "john" for example, brings up most recently used john's first, then all the Johns in my company. I really would prefer not to even have those names populate. Not sure if that can be prevented without dropping the Exchange mail account altogether. That is my question - and thank you for your reply.

Exchange Global Address List search not showing name or email
I have an iPhone and iPad connected to a Microsoft Exchange server at work. When I search the GAL for a person in the company, the results are shown as the Company only (data coming from the 'Company' field on the Exchange server) instead of the contact's name.
Here are the steps I'm taking:
- I go to Contacts app, select 'Groups', then select 'Global Address List'
- I type in a name of a person I'd like to email. For example I type John to search for all the Johns in the company.
- I get a seach result that lists anyone with John in their name. The problem is the search results list the company name instead of the user's/contact's name. (If the 'Company' field is blank in Outlook/Exchange, I CAN see the user's name).
So my search results for John look like this:
COMPANY
COMPANY
John Smith
Sarah Johnson
COMPANY
COMPANY
COMPANY
John Deer
COMPANYThere is software available that would give you support for GAL and some other SP2 features on a S60 phone. Check here: http://www.dataviz.com/products/roadsync/series60/index.html

Exchange 2007 Address List Re-Named - Outlook 2007 Clients Show Old Name
I have renamed an Address List in Exchange 2007
Applied the Address List to make sure,
Manually updated the Offline Address Book
Re-Started Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service
Manually downloaded the OAB in Outlook 2007 Client
but the renamed Address list still shows as the old name In Outlook.
The clients are not running in cached mode and the change was made several days ago.
I have searched everywhere and I'm not the first person to have this problem but I can't seem to find an answer to this issue.
Any help much appreciated.
LeeHi Lee,
Does the issue also happen in OWA?
If it is, please run Get-AddressList cmdlet to check whether the address list name (display name) is changed in your Exchange 2007. After re-naming the address list, we also need to run the following command to apply the changes:
Update-AddressList -Identity "Renamed Address List"
Then check whether the renamed address list is changed in OWA or not. If it is updated successful in OWA, restart Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service to update the Offline Address Book and manually download OAB in Outlook client.
Thanks,
Winnie Liang

Display of names in the TO: filed from the Exchange Global Address List
We have a user whose "FIRST" name in Active Directory consists of two names. Like Mary Ellen or Bobby Jo. But both names have been enetered in the TO: field. She is very adamant that she be addressed by both names.
When she receives a message, and if details is clicked, she will see the names of all who the message has been sent to, and she sees only the first part of her name and then her last name. So in the TO: field she'll see Mary Jones instead of Mary Ellen Jones, as an example. If you touch the name, the details will come up and show her full name. However she would like to see the complete "Mary Ellen Jones" in the TO: button. I have discovered that if you enter her name as she wishes in her own contact list, it will then also show all three names as she wiashes. Thought I had her there, but she doesn't want OTHER users who have iPhones to see only Mary Jones, and then would mean I'd someoehow have to populate everyone in the world she sends mail to who have iPhones with her full name in their contacts list. yea.
So is there anyway of having the iphone display the COMPLETE first name it finds in Active Directory instead of just the first part of the first name? Hi,
We just installed an Exchange 2013 server within an Exchange 2007 environment.
The Exchange 2013 (CU6) server will be used to setup a hybrid connection with O365, and move mailboxes to O365.
After installing the Exchange 2013 server it isn't possible anymore to create/enable mailboxes on the Exchange 2007 server.
We end up with an error :
Mig1 TestAccount
Failed
Error:
The Exchange server address list service failed to respond. This could be because of an address list or email address policy configuration error.
Exchange Management Shell command attempted:
Enable-Mailbox -Identity 'domain.be/customer/TEMP/Mig1 TestAccount' -Alias 'mig1' -Database 'Exchange2007\SG01\DB02'
When executed via EMS we receive this error :
The Exchange server address list service failed to respond. This could be because of an address list or email address policy configuration errorHi Lyncer
This error can be caused if the default Public Folder Database not being pointed to the exchange 2007 database which you are trying to create a new mailbox.
Also it can happen if System Attendant service is not running.
Troubleshooting steps:
1) Restart the System Attendant Service
2) Point the affected database to the default public folder
Follow the below steps to do that
Open EMC
Go to Organization Configuration > Mailbox.
Select the mailbox database that you want to change the default public folder database.
Right click the database and select properties
In <Mailbox Database Name> Properties, click the Client Settings tab.
Next to the Default public folder database box, click Browse.
In Select Public Folder Database, select the public folder database from the list of public folder databases, and then click OK.
Cheers!!!

Exchange 2003 - Cannot search my GAL
Took me a while, but I finally got connected to my Exchange server. (Exchange 2003 for Small Business, SP2 running on Win 2003)
My E-Mail syncs
My Calendars sync
My Contacts... sort of sync
I get my raw Outlook contacts, and I can see the "Exchange Global Address List >" in Contacts.
But when I fill out a name, it returns "No Results"
I am also having difficulties with OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) which may, or may not, cause the problem I am having; since OMA needs to be running in a Virtual Directory to get my iPhone to sync.
When I go to log in to OMA:
https://<server>/oma
Insert Username & Password
https://<server>/oma/(S(pmxg5gvaahzmfmoqddhocogh))/oma.aspx But the page appears blank
OMA should be all text and would act like a webpage circa '95 with only text based hyperlinks. And in fact, it was working before we updated to SP2.
Would OMA's semi-broken response affect my ability to search the GAL at all?
Is there a known solution to this GAL problem? Some good documents to clarify your client's concerns are available at below links that shows and explains in depth about "Exchange server 2003 data backup and volume shadow copy services" :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822896
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296788/en-us
Also, you can download complete disaster recovery guide from Microsoft download center : http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=85
Meanwhile, to avoid the risks and proceed error-free migration between exchange 2003 and 2007, a very helpful resource is available at website(http://www.exchangemigrationtool.com/) that could also be a
good approach to accomplish mailbox migration in a hassle-free manner. -
Iphone 4 : Global Address List is empty but everything else sync
Hello,
I've an Iphone 4 with IOS 4, Custom APN with a proxy, connected to an exchange compagny server. My mails, contacts (outlook) and cal works and sync fine but when I try to browse, in contact group, the Exchange Global Address List, it's Empty. When I do a search, no result is return... All works fine on my colleague Iphone. I check the conf and we have the same...
Do you know where the bug is? Is it the APN? the exchange conf? My Iphone Conf? My Iphone Mail Account Conf?
Thanking you in AdvanceSame Problem here with iPhone 4 and Ipad. All Exchange Profile Data is syncronized but no Global Adress List Data is accessable from the Apple Clients.
No Problems with Iphone 3 Clients. Bug? -
I noticed that when you lookup a contact or group in the GAL you see the alias property and not the display name in the result. When people search they are unaware of the alias name of the group and more aware of the diplay name. The display name is usually what you search. Now when you search iOS seems to search both the display names and the alias. But when showing the result only the alias is shown. This is a bug in my opinion and the display name is what should be shown with the alias in parenthesis.
I agree - I've noticed that contacts in the Exchange Global Address List are not included in the listing of contacts on the iPhone - I get that, as they're stored on the Exchange Server itself. However, it would be a huge benefit if the iPhone would, by default, query the GAL when performing any contact search.
It's very uninituitive to end-users and they have a difficult time understanding the distinction between the local contacts and the Exchange-based contacts (which, in a work environment, are typically the contacts they're looking for). -
Contacts went missing! but.....Global Address List?
Hi all, i recently accidentally deleted all contacts from the contact list using a third party app! Luckily however I noticed that most of my needed contacts are still available on the Exchange Global Address List link.
What is this Global Address List? where are my contacts really stored? Can I restore them?
I had previously set up my google account to sync my contacts and calender. Now even my contacts on google is GONE! What can I do? ThanksOn my phone I go to the Groups screen and at the bottom of the list it says "(account name) Global Address List".

Exchange 2003 to 2010 Migration - Offline / Address List conversion
I have seen several articles on the above but my question is this:-
Q/
Can I carry out the above before I move all the Exchange 2003 mailboxes over, or should this be only done once all the mailboxes have been migrated to the new server?Hi,
It is recommended to migrate mailboxes at first. If your mailboxes have been moved successfully, you can move your offline address book.
What's more, here is a thread for your reference.

Unable to manage Distribution list membership since moving from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010
Hi,
We have recently started migrating from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. One of our customers used to be able to manage a security group through the outlook address book. This is a mail enabled security group where the customer is on
the "Managed by" entry and the "Manager can update membership list" is ticked.
Now that the users mailbox has been migrated to Exchange 2010, if they try and modify the membership using outlook by finding the group in the address book they get the error "changes to the distribution list membership cannot be saved. you do not have
sufficient permission to perform this operation on this object".
I have now added a test account to the managed by entry on the security group to test the problem.
I have followed the article
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2009/11/18/3408844.aspx that explains how to use the EMS to give users the right to amend groups that users own. I did not run the script but entered the following commands:
New-ManagementRole -name “MyDistributionGroupsManagement_Test” -parent MyDistributionGroups
Remove-ManagementRoleEntry “MyDistributionGroupsManagement_Test\New-DistributionGroup” -confirm:$false
Remove-ManagementRoleEntry “MyDistributionGroupsManagement_Test\Remove-DistributionGroup” -confirm:$false
New-ManagementRoleAssignment -name “MyDistributionGroupsManagement_Test-Default Role Assignment Pol” -role “MyDistributionGroupsManagement_Test” -policy “Default Role Assignment Policy”
All appears to have worked ok and I have seen no errors while doing this
If I use OWA and then use the ECP, I can now see the "Public groups I own" but no groups are listed.
I have created some new distribution groups in Exchange 2010 (One dist list and one security group) to test and added the test account as an owner of both and a member of both. I still cannot amend the membership using outlook address book and the
ECP still shows no groups under "Public Groups I own"
I have seen a number of articles on how to do this and it looks like I am doing everything right and it has worked for plenty of other people. I just don't know what's going wrong.
I would be very grateful if anyone can help.
MattHi Rajith,
I deleted the outlook profile and recreated it but this did not work.
I have now created a brand new mailbox on Exchange 2010 added this to the "managed by" section of the Exchange 2010 dist lists and I still get the error. I also do not see the groups listed when logging in as that user to OWA ECP and clicking on the
Groups link.
I had a look at the link you sent me and I could see that from the Exchange server when I opened the User roles to get to the ECP, clicked on Roles and Auditing and then User Roles the only policy applied is "Default role assignment". When I select
the details for this, under Distribution groups, "My Distribution Groups" is not ticked but my new one that I created "My DistributionGroupsManagement_Test" is. So this looks ok.
Any other ideas?

Hide from Exchange Address list works in EMC but not from ADUC
We are using Exchange 2010 Version 14.3 (Build 123.4) in a 2008 AD environment. When hiding users from the GAL we found when performing this task from AD Users and Computers the box is check and we verify that it is checked in EMC but the user remains
visible. This can be an active user or a disabled user. The results are the same. But when checking the box "Hide from Exchange address list" in the EMC the change is visible instantly. We can verify that both in the GAL and from OWA. It had worked
prior but now is no longer effective from ADUC even though the box is checked in the EMC. I can check the box in ADUC and verify in Power shell HiddenFromAddressListsEnabled : True yet the user is not hidden. I assume that ADUC is fully integrated with Exchange
but the changes are only effective from ExchangeThere are 3 2008 DC. I can see the change instantly on the EMC and in Power Shell. When the changes are made via the EMC the changes are instant. When made from ADUC they never update. I think you hit the nail on the head with the versions. I have only been
here about 10 months and recently (2 months ago) fully decommission our 2003 Exchange which was hanging around for some time. Since I had experience I followed procedure and decommissioned the 2003 environment. Now as far ADUC my copy is Active Directory Users
and Computers Version: 6.1.7601.17514
I can assume from what I am reading that even though the check box and tabs for Exchange can be added, they do not function completely from ADUC? I just need to provide our Help Desk with a "best practices" They have been disabling and hiding users
via ADUC for years and claim it just stopped working.
So is it a correct statement that Exchange 2010 and above attributes can no longer be changed via ADUC?

Exchange 2010 New Address List insufficient access rights
Hi,
I have tried to perform two actions within our new Exchange 2010 system and they fail with the same error.
The first was to convert an existing Address Lists using LDAP to OPATH
I used the following command:
set-addresslist "Exchange 2010 Test" -recipientfilter {(recipienttype -eq "MailUniversalSecurityGroup") -or (recipienttype -eq "MailUniversalDistributionGroup") -and (name -like "exchange2010.*")}
I get the error Access is Denied Active Directory response 00000005: SecErr: DSID-031521D0, problem 4003 (INSUFF_ACCESS_RIGHTS), data 0
I also get the same error when I use the Exchange 2010 EMC to try and create a new address list. Note I have no problems managing address lists from Exchange 2003.
I have seen plenty of articles about the making sure that the user performing the action has the "Include inheritable permissions from this objects parent".
I did check my Exchange admin user and this was not ticked. Turns out that because I was also a domain admin so my account was in a protected group (Domain admins) the tick box was continually being removed.
I created a new Exchange user that was in the Exchange Organization Administrators security group, made sure the above box was ticked on the account but this did not fix the problem.
I have however noticed in Adsiedit that the "CN=All Address Lists" container does not have the "Include inheritable permissions from this objects parent" ticked. I suspect that this might be the issue but I don't want to tick it
in case it breaks my address lists.
Should the inherit box be ticked on the "CN=All Address Lists" container?. It is ticked on all the containers under the "CN=All Address Lists" container.
At present the only Exchange permissions on the container are:
Exchange Admins: Full Control
Exchange Domain Servers: Read
Exchange Services: Full Control
I think that crucially the "Exchange Trusted Subsytem" security group is not listed
I have added my new Exchange account with Full control permissions but this has not made a difference
Your hopefully
MattHi Matt,
From your description, I would like to clarify the following things:
1. "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" should be checked.
2. "Exchange Trusted Subsystem" should be added to the All Address Lists container.
So you are in the right direction.
Hope this can be helpful to you.
