Exchange 2003 - Continous password prompts in Outlook 2010

Hi.
A customer is experiencing continous password prompts in Outlook 2010. Outlook is configured against the Exchange 2003 BE server (FQDN) and Outlook Anywhere is configured to sync.customer.com with a valid 3rd party certificate.
Outlook is configured with Negotitate as Logon network security, setting this to basic/NTLM does not help. Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP is set and configured with sync.customer.com, and msstd:sync.customer.com. All points checked except "On
fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP", authentication is set to Basic. Changing authentication from Basic to NTLM seem to make the problem vanish.
Outlook Anywhere is functioning correctly and only prompting once for password when connecting from an external network. ISA is not configured for NTLM/Kerberos.
Exchange 2003 is located in main site in a resource domain. The prompts occur more often in two remote sites than the main site.
When opening Outlook RPCDiag shows established connection to BE and Active Directory, sometimes with prompt and sometimes without. After about 5 minutes the prompt may reappear, entering password does not remove the prompt, clicking cancel puts Outlook in
the "Need password" state, clicking this usually successfully connect Outlook to Exchange. Other times this just cause the prompt to reappear.
I´ve tried adding the internal and/or external IP address of the ISA server as sync.customer.com in the host-file on a client and forcing RPC/HTTPS through the DisableRpcTcpFallback, still getting the password prompts.
We have also been through the KB975363, changing the MaxConcurrentAPI on all domain controllers.
Finally, we know Exchange 2003 is in a unsupported state so there is no need to comment this.

Hi,
Firstly, I'd like to explian, basic authentication requires the user to enter domain, user name, and password. Thus, it's an expected behavior that the credential prompts once when the authentication is set to basic and it disappears when it's NTLM authentication:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996225(v=exchg.65).aspx
For the issue that the credential keeps prompting, I'd like to confirm if Outlook 2003 works well. If yes, you can refer to the following article:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927612/en-us
If all outlook clients prompt credential, you can check the RPC over HTTP connectivity by ExRCA:

  • Constant Password Prompting in Outlook

    Hello,
I use outlook for my work email with a POP3 account through hosting.com. When I have my iPhone set to check my work account as well, and I have outlook open- I frequently (every few minutes) get an "Enter Network Password" prompt on outlook. Is there anyway to fix this? It's really annoying. I have resulted to forwarding my work email to a Yahoo! account that my iPhone is attached to- though this is a pain as I don't want to reply to my clients from a Yahoo! domain- I need to reply to them from my company's domain.
    suggestions?
    John

I have set Outlook to only check for email once every 15 minutes. Before it was set to check every 3. My iPhone is now also set to check once every 15 minutes. The problem no longer arises. I think it might be that the mail server was getting to many log-in queries. regardless, changing this option has eliminated the problem (at least for the last 3 hours).
    cheers!

    Hi,
First, you can try to clear the credential cache in Credential Manager to check if it helps. See:

  • Audit failures on Exchange 2010 and password prompts in outlook

Starting last Thursday after I patched my domain controllers and other Windows systems and rebooted my Outlook users are being prompted for username/password continuously and my Exchange security logs reflect audit failures for NTLM which I think is triggering
the prompt. The same users also have an audit success via Kerberos.
If the password prompt it cancelled Outlook can send and receive email just fine but the box continues to pop up occasionally.
I've worked on this for several days now and can't figure it out. The audit logs on the DC's are clean with no audit failures.
The issue is also affecting Visual Studio users who log into a Team Foundation Server, they are continually prompted for credentials and can't get in and the audit logs show the same thing.
I don't think this is an Exchange specific issue but more of a broader authentication problem.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Hi,
It is a known issue if you install the following security updates on March 10, 2015:
    http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3002657
The user would be prompted with credentials when NTLM is used to authenticate these Active Directory domain users and services.
We can remove this patch from all the DCs manually and check whether the issue persists.

  • PAB Distribution List outlook 2003 xp migrated to win7 Outlook 2010 looses all addresses in the Group

Have a user that has PAB Distribution List outlook 2003 xp and  migrated to win7 Outlook 2010 looses all addresses in the Group/Distro List group imports, just will not show addresses in the distro or it removes them.
I opened the same PAB and distro on a xp computer with office 2003 after user complained none of the contacts in the distro where in there.. and using the same PAB on both computers the group contacts where populated... but do not appear on outlook 2010
    win7.
The Distro/Group is a personally created distro by the user, not an exchange server stored distro/group so its not a exchange issue.
Ive searched the net .. cant find anything on the issue.. don't know if its a MS bug, or something is switched on or off, Registry issue ??
Need a real answer to this , and can not use a third party app, must be resolved with existing apps, very strict enviroment
    Thanks in Advance
    Sean

    Hi everyone,
I have the exact same problem. When I import a 2003 PAB into Outlook 2010, There are no contacts displayed. The address book itself seems to be imported (I can select the address book when creating an e-mail), but again, no contact exist in the imported
    PAB.

  • Internally installed Outlook 2010 prompts for password using external smtp email as user id

    Hi,
After exchange 2007 to exchange 2013 migration all internally connected outlooks 2010 (xp, vista, win7, win8) prompt for password using external email user address as user id.
Below some of my settings and informations.
    Internal domain: contoso.local
    External domain: contoso.com
Exchange is NOT published to Internet at all.
    Internally OWA, ECP runs OK.
    Test-OutlookWebservices with user.name(at)contoso.local or contoso\user.name - runs OK
    Test-OutlookWebservices with user.name(at)contoso.com - fails
Common scenario - (all happens internally):
    1.User starts Outlook
2.Outlook prompts for password with default user.name(at)contoso.com as id
    - while user tries to authenticate using his domain password - outlook re-prompts
    - while user changes id from user.name(at)contoso.com to user.name(at)contoso.local or contoso\user.name and authenticates - Outlook connets to exchange and till next Outlook it runs ok.
I am bus with that issue since 1 week and I am already bit tired. I was looking for answer via gogle/bing and went through tons of "Outlook perpetually prompts for password" threads and blogs. No success.
Do you have any clue where else start to play with that?

    Hi,
Thank you for answer - no luck
    >NExt og to Connection tab - Exchange Proxy settings - Proxy authentication settings - is it set
    >to NTLM or Basic?Give it a try on one of them.(if set to NTLM change to basic and vise versa).
On both settings the same results - Outlook is prompting for password.
    >Another thing you could try is og to Internet Explorer - tool -internet options- Security - click local
    >intranet - >custom Level and scroll Down to bottom and put check mark on automaticly logon
    >With current username >and password.
    >Do this on Trusted sites as well,if Your domain is listed under trusted sites
The same results - Outlook isprompting for password.
Should not be some kind of mapping set somehow in AD between user.name(at)contoso.com and user.name(at)contoso.local?
I have impresion that issue is somewhere in the fact that outlook is trying to connect using contoso.com instead of contoso.local in ntlm credentials.

  • Exchange 2003 to 2010 migration mailflow issue

    Hello,
I have a server 2003 w/ exchange 2003 that we are upgrading to 2010 to support Outlook 2013.
So we installed a windows 2008 server and exchange 2010. We followed a guide to help with the different steps and didn't have problem or error until now.
So what we have right now, is exchange 2003 with still ALL mailboxes.
    Replications of folders is done.
    Policies are updated.
The firewall is forwarding port 25 to the new exchange 2010 server:
    Emails are coming in fine.
Internal emails are also perfectly fine (from internal user to internal users).
the only thing that is giving us trouble is the emails coming out. None of them are going out and they are getting "stuck" in the "routing group connector" on the 2003 machine.
The 2010 exchange has a simple send connector set SMTP/* with this server as source. The 2003 exchange only had the exch2003-exch2010 connector.
Because emails were kind of accumulating (80+) I decided to take the send connector on the 2010 exchange out. and added back a send connector on the 2003 exchange. This kind of "fixed" it as now all emails are going just fine. It also fixed
the queue as part of it got liberated when I added the 2003 send connector.
I still have 25 emails stuck in this "routing group connector" that I'd like to take care of.
We are obviously not done with the migration and this coexistence phase as actual mailboxes still need to be moved.
So I'd like to take care of this queue in the routing group connector as well as continue the process of being able to receive and send from the 2010 machine only. then I would continue the migration process.
FYI, the 2003-2010 connector was created using power shell on the 2010 machine. I am not using any smarthost.
and the error message (in the queue) I get is: "unable to bind to the destination server in DNS"
FYI, my 2003 server is called "SERVER1" and the 2010 server is "SERVER2", they're on the same local domain company.local.
FYI (not sure if that's relevant), the server1 exchange has a different certificate (different domain name) than the new server (server2) as our web host finally allowed us to use subdomains. not trying to confuse anyone but I am really stuck there and maybe
this is related: certificate for the exchange 2003 machine: www.company-mail.com (only 1) and certificates for the exchange 2010 are: mail.company.com / autodiscover.company.com (and a legacy.company.com we may not need since the actual coexistence phase will/should
    be short).
    any idea what's wrong here?

I added back the send connector on the 2010 exchange. everything still works fine since I still have the send connector on the 2003. However...
I connected through telnet to server2 (the exchange 2010) and was able to mail internally. however I couldn't send mail externally, it gives me a "cannot relay" error when I enter my rcpt to:... command.
I am guessing that this may be the reason why the queue is not emptying itself through that send connector.
Anything else I could try to test my "send connector" on the 2010 exchange?

  • Free/Busy availability and Out of Office not working after Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010

We just migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 as an intermediate step before we get to Exchange 2013.  I want to make sure everything is working OK before we start the migration to Exchange 2013.
The users have Outlook 2010, and there are 2 issues.  They can't view free/busy times for other people using the scheduling assistant, and they can't set their Out of Office messages.  If they go in through Outlook Web Access, then these features
    work!
I've searched the forums, and I see a few similar issues, but I don't think this is related to the .Net issue on the CAS server.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!
    --Kent

    Hi Kent,
Try checking the free busy info Outlook 2010 with running  /cleanfreebusy switch
Check the Free/Busy System Public Folder and pointed out to the correct server on each mailbox DB in Exchange 2010
Find the public folder replica database
    get-publicfolder -Identity "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY" -Recurse | fl name,Replicas
In E2k10 check if the exchange 2003 is added in the replica list. If not try adding them and check.
    force Public folder content replication.
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question.
That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

  • Duplicate calendars in Outlook 2010 after migration from Outlook 2003 using USMT 4.1

    Hi
We have setup where we migrate computers from Windows XP and Outlook 2003 to Windows 7 and Outlook 2010 using USMT 4.1 and task sequence and SCCM.
We are currently experiencing that some users are having calendars in Outlook 2010 duplicated after the migration has been performed. The duplicated calendar cannot be deleted. The name of the calendar varies from case to case.
Has anyone experienced the same issues, and know how to resolve it?
    Best regards,
    M

    Hi
    Thank you for using
Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.
If the calendar from personal folder .PST file follow these methods troubleshoot
    1.
Turn on or off Cached Exchange Mode, Click
    Here
    2.
Disable .PST file, and the re-add again.
    3.
    Create a new profile
    4.
If the problem still did not resolve, you can refer to this KB article:
“Outlook: Troubleshooting guide for missing, duplicated or unsynchronized calendar items”
     http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2222377
If the calendar from Exchange Server, you can logon mailbox via OWA, if there has duplicated calendar, the problem might be caused by Exchange Server.
Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for
you, please feel free to let me know.

  • Vista Biz \ DTM 4.7 \ Bold \ Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2003 Nightmare! Help Please

    Hi
I am trying to sync my Exchange Pub Folder (Calendar and Contacts) to my BB 9000 and it fails when I select 'MAP' in the DTM sync process.
    Vista Biz
    DTM 4.7
    Outlook 2007
    Exchange 2003
    Bold
I am local\admin perms and Owner perms on the Exchange \pub folders but it crashes as soon as I select the MAP button.
On my WinXP Pro, using Outlook 2003 and the same exchange it works out of the box, but with Vista and Outlook 07 it crashes.  Has anyone experienced this?
    Thanks
    Karl

It would appear that at least in certain situations Exchange 2003 can't "understand" what Outlook 2007 pushes into the mail store, which is an issue when anything tries to connect via POP or IMAP as the server tries to "render" an Internet standard message, and fails.
Some info here, particularly the bit by Buddha377
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvradmin/thread/c63b871 3-9ef9-4076-a11b-5db08255689b
Sounds like your iPhone sync may be suffering the same way??
P.S. Simply reading a message with OWA can "repair" email messages, I've witness this myself seeing Mail.app show "garbage" for a certain message pulled via IMAP, OWA showing the message fine, then all of a sudden Mail.app showing a perfectly formed message.

  • Cant sync icloud with Outlook 2010 after Apple deactivated my password

I used to have a 7 character password stored in Outlook 2010. Apple would no longer accept my password as it was less than 8 characters and when I changed it, despite changing the password on iCloud control pannel on my Windows 7 computer, Outlook 2010 will not accept the password change and keeps givig me a "wrong password" message. There seems to be no way to change my password within Outlook and as a result, I can not push my calender to my iPhone 5.
I have deleted iCloud control panel rebooted etc, and it will update the caleneder once but never again. I cant keep doing this as it is not a solution, just a time consuming hassle.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate your effort but you obviously have no idea what I am talking about. I have been using mobileme and iCloud for years to sync my outlook calender to my iPhone.
Mobile Me and iCloud are entirely different services, iC;ouds password requirements are stricter than Mobile Me's were and were not supported by iCloud. You got lucky (as others did) that yours kept workin.
And as I "obviously have no idea what I am talking about"
    I can't help you.

    Hi,
Thanks for posting in the forum.
Regarding the current issue, since you have recreated the user profile without any issue, I suspect that it’s mainly caused by the network issue. At this time, please first check the TCP/IP
configurations as Larry mentioned. Then, please also refer to the article below for details about how to troubleshoot Outlook connectivity issue.

  • Outlook 2010 Profiles Not Creating with Exchange 2010 Backend

In an enterprise environment.  Issue has been replicated on multiple Windows Terminal Servers, with multiple accounts.
With multiple accounts have recreated the user profiles from scratch, and launched outlook 2010.  The profile does not autocreate, it was working in production about a week ago.  Windows Updates were applied for December 2014.
Does anyone know if a Local Windows Client side patch would cause Outlook 2010 not to resolve a profile correctly.  Could this be the outlook mapi rpc issue that was part of RU8.  Have searched several hundred artciles on this on google and twitter
in the last weeks time frame and cannot find anywhere online that lists excatly what a user experiences when RU8 fails.  Have not heard back from the Exchange administrator if RU8 was deployed.  There are also multiple Windows Updates for December

There are known issues with Outlook connections if you are using Exchange 2010 SP3 UR8 (as you have found).  You can check which update you are running by going to
Control Panel/Uninstall a Program, then click the
View Installed Updates selection (upper left).  Your
Exchange Server 2010 - Software Updates will show a definite difference between UR8 and UR8V2.  To be safe, I'd fully remove UR8 and install UR8V2 after a system restart.

  • Outlook 2013 and Exchange 2003

    Good day,
Hoping someone can give a link to an official stance from Microsoft. I know that some TechNet pages I have looked at state Outlook 2013 cannot connect to a server running Exchange 2003 (found here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc178996(v=office.15).aspx) but is there any official support from Microsoft at all for workarounds? I don't mean just using IMAP
but will Microsoft offer support in any way to allow Exchange 2003 to be compatible with Outlook 2013?
I am sure the answer is no but I just wanted to still pose the question to see if there is any documentation stating this.
    Thank you

No workarounds available.  Exchange 2007 is the minimum supported version with Outlook 2003.
