Exchange 2007 machine: Backup of three whole volumes, waste of space?

Hello,
I have a Exchange 2007 server . Three volumes:
1-C:\  , system. (100 GB Hard disk)
2-D:\ , Exchange databases. (100 GB Hard disk)
3- E:\ , Exchange Logs. (100 GB Hard disk)
As far as I know, this is best practices.
All in an only VMWare machine.
I am reading that backing up this Exchange server, will take the three whole volumes, therefore, 300 GB of space needed ?.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, I am sort of new to Exchange.
Is there a better way to locate my Exchange files, and the Windows system files?
Thanks in advance!
Luis Olías Técnico/Admon Sistemas . Sevilla (España - Spain)

Depending on how you are backing the volumes up, it could take 300GB, or it could take only the storage necessary for the actual data on the disks.  How are you running the backups?  Something you want to keep in mind - if you are running an Exchange-aware
backup, you aren't going to backup the log files - they get written to the database and unneeded logs are purged at the end of the backup.
As for a better way, what you are showing looks like a planned configuration.  You normally want the Exchange data separate from the OS, and having the logs separate from the databases is a common practice.

  • Time Machine: Backup is too large and I have space on my Time Capsule !

    Hi Everybody,
I am using Time Machine with my 1T Time Capsule. Everything was running nice till I get message telling that backup could not complete because there was an error copying backup files. I searched for solutions, erased TM disk, reset TM, and reset TC too. Now I have 937g available on TC, I tried to backup 63g but a message came out telling that backup is too large !
    Any ideas please !?

  • Restore Exchange 2007 database backup on Exchange 2010 server

    Hi,
We have a requirement to restore mailbox from 2 years old when backup taken from Exchange 2007 server. Now we are on Exchange 2010 server where backup happens. So out of 2 years 1 year backup happen from Exchange 2007 & later happen from Exchange 2010
    server using Netbackup.
We have 2 Exchange 2010 mailbox server & 1 Exchange 2007 mailbox server. Mailbox to be restore currently exists on Exchange 2010 mailbox server & functional.
can someone guide me with exact steps or best practice for restoring mailbox. confused by reading over multiple posts.

    Hi ,
You cannot export data to a .pst file from a mailbox that is in a recovery storage group (RSG).
Mailboxes that are in a database that has been mounted in an RSG cannot be connected to Active Directory directory service accounts. These mailboxes have to be merged into existing mailboxes, or copied to a folder in an existing mailbox.

  • Time Machine backup not a large as amount of space used on harddrive

I just bought a new iMAC and Time Capsule and completed my first backup. In Disk Utility it shows that there is 151 GB of space used on the hard drive. The space used on the Time Capsule is 131 GB. I searched this topic and can't find it addressed before. Did Time Capsule not back up all the Hard Drive?
    Thanks,
    Carl

    Pondini,
Thank you for your prompt response. My hard drive and Time Capsule drive both show that 150 GB are used so I guess that is settled. When the Time Capsule changed I don't know. In regard to the Time Machine Buddy, I followed the instructions. To copy I pressed the C key, the M key, and the D key then pressed the C key again. It works a lot better to use the CMD key C approach.

  • My Time Machine backups are significantly larger, and slower, over WiFi than Ethernet

My regular hourly backups from my Time Capsule began acting up a month ago. They were abnormally large (25-100 MBs) and took a long time--once, six hours.
I connected my Time Capsule to my MacBook Air through ethernet to repair the disk through Disk Utility, (I turned Airport off on the Air, but not the Time Capsule), and then to rebuild the Spotlight index for the Time Capsule.
Backups over ethernet work just fine now. The backup will happen in two parts, of around 200 KB each, and take two or two and a half minutes. But when I turn Airport on the Air back on, reconnect to the WiFi network, unplug the ethernet cable, and immediately start a new backup over WiFi, the two parts balloon to around 20 MB each, and the backup takes hours.
This is a backup over ethernet, which took 2 minutes, 21 seconds:

I live in an apartment building so there are a number of WiFi networks around.
Not to mention cordless phones, microwaves, etc., any of which can interfere.
On iStumbler, my network shows up twice--once on channel 149, with signal strength of 50-65% and noise of 15%--and again on channel 10, with signal strength of that wildly varies from 20% to 90% and noise of 20%. Other networks in the building are on channels 1, 2, 6, and 11. The graph of channel 149 is very smooth, while the graph of channel 10 is choppy.
It's probably using 149, as those numbers are pretty good.   Press Alt/Option before clicking the Airport icon in your menubar to see which band it's using.
Watch the band it's using while running a backup.  Try other channels in the area of 149.  Unfortunately, it's a bit of a "hit and miss" thing.
Why are there two networks? Is that part of the problem? My Time Capsule is located about three feet right and a foot below my desk, so I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be 100% for both channels.
It's a dual-band router.  As I understand it, OSX will pick the best signal.
I really want to know I have a clean, safe, accessible back-up before I replace it though. Right now I don't trust the Time Capsule.
Do at least your last backup via Ethernet.

  • OS X Reinstall & Selective Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
I want to reinstall OS X and do the following:
    1) Keep my settings, data, documents, contacts, photos, etc
    2) Get rid of unneccessary applications, Paralles, MS Office, etc
I have a Time Machine backup of my whole system, so the question is:
Can i "selectively" put documents, contacts, etc. back from Time Machine WITHOUT moving the whole junk back that I don't want?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hopefully, you have realized by now that the price you paid for pirated/cracked software was too high, even if it was free, & it has no place on your Mac. If you do not intend to buy legitimate copies of such things, do not ask for help here regarding any specific problems they cause: the terms of use require that we stay within the law so we cannot discuss anything like that.
What we can say is that:
    1) An Archive & Install with the "Preserve User and Network Settings" option is unlikely to be a good choice for you because it may preserve files that should be replaced. (See Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature for more about which files are preserved.)
    2) You can use the Erase & Install option, followed by using Migration Assistant with a Time Machine backup to selectively transfer:
    • one or more user accounts & some or all the subfolders of the home folder of each account
    • all or none (but not your choice) of the items in both your root level Applications & Library folders
    • all or none (but not your choice) of any other root level files & folders you have added to your startup drive
    • all or none of each of three sets of system wide parameters: network, time zone, & sharing settings
This will give you a "clean" install to start with, but you must be careful not to transfer anything tainted by the pirated/cracked software when using the assistant or you may reintroduce the problems you are trying to cure. Without knowing the details of the pirated/cracked software you have installed (& really, only the people that cracked or distributed it know that) we cannot give you specific help with that.
    3) You can use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a single Windows partition on your startup drive if you partitioned it with this assistant to begin with. Note that this will destroy any documents stored in this partition.

  • Cannot Complete a Time Machine backup

Here's a question for all the pros. I am fairly new to macs and I have a MacBook Pro that is running on Snow Leopard. I have not been able to complete a TM since the beginning of November. It always keeps on coming up with an error message about the backup disk right when there are about 10G left in the backup. I thought it might be the disk so I went and shelled out the money for a Time Capsule but to no avail I still cannot do a TM. I am so frustrated. I have called Apple Support and spent almost a whole day with them and I still have not gotten it to work. I can always call them back but it is so time consuming. I have had problems with a couple of different applications so I wanted to do a TM so I could just erase my HD and start from scratch. Has anyone heard of this problem? Can any of you guys think of anything that might be helpful? I just wanted to check and see before I spend another whole day on the phone again. Thanks

  • I want to include an external Photo drive in my current Time Machine backup.  How?

I just set up my Time Machine last night.  I have two additional external hard drives attached to my iMac, one with photos, one with music.  I wanted those two external hard drives to be included in my Time Machine backup, but apparently I did something wrong in setting up Time Machine because it appears they have been excluded from the backup process.
I see them listed in the exclude list, but I see no way to add them to Time Machine backup.  The whole reason I wanted to get this backup set up was to make sure my photos and music were coppied to the backup.  Is there a way to add these two external hard drives to my Time Machine backup now that it has been set up?  If not, is there a way to start over and re-setup the Time Machine so I can include them?
It seems like it shouldn't be so complicated.  What am I missing?
    Thank you for your responses.

You remove the drives from the exclude list..
Use the + to add things to the exclude list..
Highlight the item and use the - to remove it from the exclude list.

  • Time machine backup not working right!

I am running Snow Leopard on a reasonably new imac 20".
I have been having problems getting my computer to backup to our timecapule. We have it programmed to automatically backup, but it is coming up with the error message: the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk.
I have looked in the console, and initially found an error message relating to a flashplayer/sys file (sorry can't remember all the detail, and it doesn't seem to be there now). I set it to exclude that file from backup, and crossed my fingers. Still no joy.
It is now showing the following error message:
    Dec 14 22:08:21 00-25-4b-8d-28-95 com.apple.backupd[427]: Error: (5) getxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.SnapshotState path:/Volumes/Backup of Sebastian Jonsson’s iMac/Backups.backupdb/Sebastian Jonsson’s iMac/2009-12-03-053418
It keeps repeating, the only difference is the numbers at the end.
I have no idea what to do now. Can anyone please help me, I'm worried about not having my info backed up properly.

I have the same problem which has just started when all was working fine. I have done I think all the things suggested in Time Machine - Troubleshooting User Tips but I still get the same error message.

  • Time Machine backup increases as it runs

I have a problem that it seems that many people have had but I have yet to find an answer, despite trying many of the things mentioned in these boards.
My time machine backups start saying that a resaonable ammount will be backed up (< 1GB) but always end up with over 30GB being backed up (out of a total of 40GB as I have excluded alot of files while I try to sort this).
    So far I have
Performed a full time machine reset
Deleted all time machine backups and started from scratch.
Tried time capsule, network and local drives.
So far nothing seems to resolve this.
This is the log from the latest backup:

One thing that I have notived us that the two lines below occur in every backup which does not seem right and I was wondering if this was related.

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    tmutil compare | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

I've tried verifying and repairing the sparsebundle using the Disk Utility program (no improvement) and I've also tried to reset Time Machine (again, no success). What else do I need to try? The access point and printer sharing work fine, so the problem seems to be software-based.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next? I'm a bit out of ideas.

  • Time Machine Backup File Size :  Very Small compared to MAC HD

I did my first backup and my MAC HD where everything is at is about 319.73 in capacity and Im only using 167.78 storage space. So, is the problem that I used Time Machine on my previous machine to backup to a different volume? Then perhaps it has just tried to backup things that may have changed in the couple of months since I last backed up on that machine?
If so, how do I get time machine to start afresh with my new Time Capsule?

  • Kernel Panic during Time Machine Backup

I did it, I restarted the computer and since then I cannot get the time machine backup to end without a kernel panic!

I was listening itunes music during the backup.

    Hi all
my Time Machine backups regularly result in kernel panics. I'm on a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and backing up to a Time Capsule. I removed the entire backup, erased the HDD in Airport Utility, and started from scratch backing up via Ethernet. No other applications are open.
I verified and repaired the internal HDD with Disk Utility (booting from the Mac OS X Install DVD). HDD appears to be ok. Repaired disk permissions. Ran Apple Hardware Test, all ok. Removed the Preference file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (as per #A4. suggestion). But after all this, I still get kernel panics only after about 2 or 3GB into the backup (of approx. 140GB data total).
The Time Machine widget that I installed reported this after the reboot after the last kernel panic:
    +Starting standard backup+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+
    +Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+

    +Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb+
+Error parsing SystemMigration.log to determine source volume of system migration.+
    +No pre-backup thinning needed: 146.69 GB requested (including padding), 893.87 GB available+
+Waiting for index to be ready (101)+
These are the kernel panic reports I'm getting. I took out the HEX bits ("snip"). They all report as the possible cause: "unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock". Can anyone suggest any solutions to this problem? Thanks heaps!

  • Can i use another mac as a time machine backup?

    HI,
I was just wondering if i can connect two macs via ethernet or firewire and use of of them to do a time machine backup of the other mac.

The two machines are connected by Ethernet via an 100BaseT hub and are on a local network. The server has a static IP address and my primary machine uses DHCP. I don't know if this would work for IP over FireWire.
Truthfully if I were you I would just go ahead and spring for a good FireWire 800 hard drive (and cable of course) to use for your back-ups. I have the server because I use it for a lot of other things - it is available for Time Machine backups for our whole group of computers and I serve a small web site from it for internal use.
