Exchange 2007 Public Folder Database cannot be deleted

We are in the process of decommissioning exchange 2007 server from 2007 <-> 2013 coexistence.
All user MailboxDatabases have been sucsessfully removed, however PF Mailbox databases return an error.
“The public folder database 'Public Folder Database' cannot be deleted”
Object is read only because it was created by a future version of Exchange: 0.10 (14.0.100.0). Current supported version is 0.1 (8.0.535.0).
I am suspecting the presence for 2 OAB is the reason why we can’t delete Public folder database from 2007 server.

Questions:
How can I check if both exchange servers are still OAB generation servers?
I am not sure if the previous service provider moved OAB,  can I potentially cause any problems by executing
Get-MailboxDatabase | Set-MailboxDatabase -OfflineAddressBook "\Default Offline Address Book (Ex2013)"
Move-OfflineAddressBook -Identity "Default Offline Address Book" -Server EX13

Thanks

Default and System public folders show up under PF Management Console, however their preview pane on the right says "There are no items to show in this view" for both of them.

  • Exchange 2010 Public folder database size grown upto 1.22TB

I have situation to discuss , have three exchange public folder server with 2010Ent edt. One of Pub folder dtabase has been reached 1.22TB . Problem is that we cant increase more storage as its reached over limit. We are unable to do backup as its need to
split in multiple chunk . I cant do offline defrag as if now casue of LUNs limit.
Do someone has such sitaution faced and have any recommendation is this ? I can do create a new PF database. More over I am looking some short of solution to split whole database in two part hosted by two PUB server and each database just do content replication
with each hosting own database on each server. Will really appriciate for any good suggestion. I am open for all other possibilities.
    Saty

I have executed whole project to move from 2010 to 20103. Public folder was a big pain. It was 3 copy of 1.32 TB. Plan started from implementation of Archiving tool for exchange.
1- First level pulled all detail reports for PF name, size last access time ,update time ,type9 mail enable or normal.
2- Pull the report and calculate the free white space with all calculation of individual server wise, and get the actual data size ,
3- Target to one PF server holding passive copy of public folders (Not Master copy)
4- Target the public folder keeping 0KB size and create script to delete in non recurs mode so only folders which has size 0 will be delete and rest all be left just like that .
5- later target the folder size keeping huge data and foliter it out with root folder and check out the permission and reach out people if the really need the data .Get the sign off and delete it through recurs script.
If you not put recurs delete it will never allow to delete whole folder in one way.
6- Target folder which data are important and move them to shared mailbox . Using soem restore tool which can export pst of those folder and import into mailbox. Set the permission accordingly. And set Enterprise erchiving policy for that shared.Same above
two exercise need to apply for all public folders.
7- Target those folders which are in use and try to convince and move them to shared mailbox with unlimited mailbox size with EV archiving.
8- And at the end move replica of target server to master copy.
9- Once replica move is complete you can plan to delete the PF data edb file. It wont allow to delete directly as you have to go through ADSIEDIT method only.
10- while same exercise need to do for all other passive copy.
11- Create a fresh edb and now you can move pf replica content to new edb which will help to move actual data with very limited whitespace.
12- And this way whole PF will be in actual size and all junk and unwanted files/data/emails/meetings etc will be removed.
13- There will be one common issue of form created through outlook so you need to import them carefully using default system folder.

  • Syncronizing a Exchange 2007 Public folder to SP 2010 Caledar

    Greetings
I am running Share Point 2010 Enterprise and Exchange 2007.  We have a large amount of Public Folders that we need to migrate to Share Point.  I was wondering if there is a way to do this without having to buy any extra software.  I have researched
some and all that I have read is that you can use a the Outlook sync button to link the calendar to Outlook which I am fine with.  All our workstations are using Outlook 2010.  But I have read that if you copy the appointments from one calendar to
this SP linked calendar all appointments will sync from that point on, which is incorrect.  Moreover, when I select list view to copy the appointments over and then open appoints in calendar view none of the appointments show I am assuming
that this is a permissions issue.  So I guess I am asking two questions here.  1) what is the best way to migrate Exchange Public Folders into SharePoint?  And why are the appointments that I copy over from the public folder are not showing
up when I change the view back to calendar view in Outlook.  I really appreciate you time for reading my post.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to migrate the exchange public folders to SharePoint 2010 calendar.
If you hava a small number public folders, you can migrate the public folders manully.
Here is an article which about migrate public folders to SharePoint manully(although it’s about SharePoint 2007, I think it’s helpful for you).

If you have a large number of Public Folders it would be recommended that you take a look at 3rd Party Migration Tools,
such as the Quest or AvePoint products:

  • Exchange 2007 - Public Folder Access

    Hello,
i have a little problem. I'm using my iPhone in my company like some other guys here. I want to synchronize the Exchange Public Folders through the iPhone. I already know thats not possible in a direct way. Does anyone know a good Tool to synchronize Folders in Exchange? I found some Tools, but only Add-Ins, no standalone applications which work without Outlook and completely alone. I'm searching for some kind of tool which runs in a process on a webserver.
    MfG KeRn

I know this is an issue, Microsoft are so backwards in their way of thinking.....Most companies use public folders in one way or another.
I have a Kerio Mail Server it's identical to Exchange but better and more stable and costs a fraction of the price, they released a version of their software by accident that synced and supported public folders to my iPhone, they removed it in the next update, I have contacted them on this issue and they say that they are working on solving this problem and it is due to a bug in the syncing process. So I am waiting with anticipation for them to release it very soon, so up that Microsoft!!!!!! Get with the real world!!

  • Remove Last Public Folder Database / Impact on Outlook 2007 - 2013 Clients ?? / Exchange 2010

    Hello together,
we have an Exchange 2010 SP3 UR5 Infrastructure. Now the end is in sight for Public Folders :)
We want to Remove our Last Public Folder Database on our Organization.
How can i get this managed and what is the Outlook 2007+++ Client Impact on this Action ?
    The Plan is:
    Remove all Public Folder Content
Set the OAB to Web Distribution Only
Clear the “msExchHomePublicMDB” attribute on Exchange Databases
Clear  the “siteFolderServer” attribute on CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)
Remove the Public Folder Database with ADSI
Is there anything else to do ?
Is there any Outlook Client Impact on this ? Does the Users get a Outlook Error like "your exchange administrator did some changes please restart" or is it transparent for the users ?
    thanks for Feedback,
    Best,
    Martin

    Hello,
    Please follow the Naren.Neelam's suggestion.
Besides, I recommend you remove database via EMC or EMS. If you can't remove the database via EMC or EMS, and then you can use ADSIEDIT to remove the public folder database from the organization.
When you remove a public folder database, the Exchange database (.edb) file for the database and other files associated with the database aren't automatically deleted. You must delete the public folder database files manually.
Here are some articles for your reference.

  • Exchange 2007 error relating to Public Folder Database

    Hi
We migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007 recently as we already had the licence so decided to take advantage of it.
We unfortunately forgot to migrate the Public Folders as we mistakenly thought as we didn't use them they were no longer needed in Exchange 2007.
    We are now receiving
    "Event ID 8207, MSExchangeFBPublish
Error updating public folder with free/busy information on virtual machine BARR-EXCH-001. The error number is 0x80004005."
On the server, I have tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945602 and the command
    doesnt show an error but
    Get-PublicFolder -Identity "\NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY" -Recurse | fl name,Replicas
Still shows no entry for the NON_IPM_SUBTREE\SCHEDULE+ FREE BUSY.  I have been advised to create a new PF store on the server as the one currently is probably empty or corrupted.
To do this would I follow this article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/bb123687(v=exchg.80).aspx
    Or
Dismount the public folder database on the Exchange 2007 serverGo to the folder path of the EDB filedelete\move the EDB fileGo back to the management console and mount the
public folder database. You will get a warning that one or more database files is missing. Go ahead and clickOK to mount a blank database file.?
    Any help/advice appreciated.
    Cheers
    Cheers Chris

    Hi,
If the existing file is corrupt, I recommend you recreate a new public folder database in Exchange 2007.
To create a new public folder database, you can refer to the following article.

Hi, i have full Exchange 2010 deployment and one Exchange 2007 mailbox server that contains only one public folder database.
I dont have any public fodler databases on Exchange 2010 servers so there is only one public folder db in the whole organization residing in the last mailbox 2007 server.

  • Resources and public folder database - migration from 2007 to 2013

We migrated our resource mailboxes thru the move mailboxes in 2013 EAC but now we're at the point of decommissioning our 2007 servers.  Before the actual decommission we stopped all 2007 services and dismounted all 2007 databases.  Once we did
this the resources would no longer work - errors pertaining to cannot directly book the resource.
I had to bring up the public folder database for the moved resources to work again.  We do not use public folders any longer so we did not do any type of public folder migration.  Do I need to do this for the resources to work?

    Hi,
Could you please tell me your Outlook version?
I saw someone got the following error when he tried to book resource after migrating from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, if Outlook version is Outlook 2007. But Outlook 2010 worked well.
"Cannot directly book a resource for this meeting."
Please switch between online and cached mode to check the result. And please check if this issue occurs in OWA.
If possible, please use Outlook 2010 to check the result.

  • Delete Public Folder Database

I am on Exchange 2010 SP3, and I am at the point where I am getting rid of using Public Folders. All folders have since been converted to room mailboxes, or deleted since they were unused. The OAB is no longer being distributed through pubic folders.
I was going to follow the steps here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876883(v=exchg.141).aspx
However, I am aware of the problem with the Internet Newsgroup
public folder that can't be deleted.
So I read where you have to use ADSI to delete the database instead if you can't delete the public folder database cause of that specific public folder.  So what are the CORRECT steps/order to decommission your public folders when you have the dreaded
Internet Newsgroups public folder you can't delete?

OK, I went to remove the public folder database today.  But it wouldn't delete because of this issue I think.
It's the last public folder database in my enterprise, and the only folder left is the stupid Internet Newsgroup folder I can't delete.
    The error is:
    Microsoft Exchange Error
The public folder database 'DBPublicFolders' cannot be deleted.
    DBPublicFolders
    Failed
    Error:
The public folder database "DBPublicFolders" contains folder replicas. Before deleting the public folder database, remove the folders or move the replicas to another public folder database. For detailed instructions about how to remove a public folder
    database, see
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=81409&clcid=0x409.
    OK
If I go the ADSI method, what should I do before hand?  dismount the database?  remove it's association with all databases?

  • Public folder database hopelessly gone. I just want to create a new one. SBS2011, Exchange 2010

I have a client with SBS2011.  They have a corrupted Public Folder Database which cannot be repaired. I don't need any data. Is there a way to delete it (when I try to, it talks about selecting a different server, I only have the one sbs2011). I just
want to create a new fresh one.
When I try to create a new one, I am told I can only have one.
    Help!

    Hi,
If you are trying to remove Public folder database from ADSIEdit, please back up the folder, just in case.
Or you can also try to remove Public folder database with this command
    Get-PublicFolder -Server <ServerName> "\Non_Ipm_Subtree" -Recurse -ResultSize:Unlimited | Remove-PublicFolder -Server <ServerName>  -Recurse -ErrorAction:SilentlyContinue
Replace <ServerName> with the name of your server.

  • Exchange 2010 Recover Public Folder database from replication database.

Following a hardware failure on Saturday, one of our public folder databases was dismounted, and was corrupt. I was able to run eseutil /p to get to a clean shutdown state, but I still couldn't mount and more research suggested that the logs for the database
were corrupted and unrecoverable (Log file: E:\logs\EXCH-PFDB1\E0100007E16.log
ERROR: Log damaged (unusable). Last Lgpos: (0x7e16,9,0). Error - 501.)
Everything i can find suggests that at the point where it makes the most sense just to restore the database. We do have another public folder database, which is set up to replicate all of its data with the one that went down, so this
should be relatively easy. However I want to make sure that I don't do it wrong and end up deleting my good database. What's the proper procedure for this? I can't seem to find anyone who has documented it.

Thank you Gulab.  This worked for me after a drive holding the Public Folder database logs failed. I first replaced the drive and recreated the folder structure.  I then ran a Symantec Backup Exec restore job which failed although some
log files did recover.  Unfortunately, I could still could not mount the Public Folder Database so I ran
Eseutil /mh which confirmed a dirty shutdown. I then emptied all files from the Log folder which appeared as a result of the restore job and ran Eseutil /p which was successful.
I was then able to mount the Public Folder Database and I could see the contents of the Public Folders in Outlook and the Log folder started to populate from the DAG's second copy.

  • Exchange 2013 Public Folder Migration Problem

    Hi All,
Wonder if any of you can assist with a public folder issue I am having with Exchange 2013. We have migrated from Exchange 2010 to 2013.
I have followed the guide for public folder migration here
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx
Everything went fine and as per the document - except I had to use the "largeitemlimit" parameter to get the public folder migration to complete.
We tested the public folder migration by adding content to public folders and creating public folders and it all appeared to be OK, we completed the migration and removed our old public folder databases from Exchange 2010.
However we noticed later that users cannot CREATE folders in SOME public folders. It appears from some testing that any folder that does not lie in the first public folder mailbox, end users cannot create public folders.  Administrators can create them
fine from the ECP - just not from outlook.
It also appears some users cannot see some folders that they have permissions to.
Can anyone assist with some ideas to resolve ?
    Thanks.

    Question?
Are you able to create the Folder in OWA?

  • Exchange 2013 Public Folder Migration Not Listed

I started a public folder migration from my 2010 SP3 Exchange server to my new 2013 SP1 Exchange server. Somewhere during the process I failed. Not sure where but I am now at the point where if I try to create a new public folder on teh 2013 box i get a
    warning like this.
An existing Public Folder deployment has been detected. To migrate existing Public Folder data, create new Public Folder mailbox using -HoldForMigration switch.
So I then run Get-PublicFoldermIgrationRequest to see what is still waiting... I get no migration listed in Exchange Management Shell.
I would like to find the place in AD or in the Server that thinks there is still an active request out there and remove it so I can start again with a clean slate. How do I do that?
    Thanks!

    Hi Zulea,
This is a known issue, I recommend you refer to the following article to resolve the issue:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3004062/en-us
    Cause:
This problem occurs when the Exchange organization coexists with an earlier version of Exchange Server, and one or more public folder databases from the earlier version of Exchange still exist.
    Resolution:
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Create the mailbox by using the -HoldForMigration switch:
This option lets an administrator create a public folder mailbox in order to begin a migration from the existing public folders:
    Open the Exchange Management Shell.
Run the following cmdlet to create the public folder mailbox:
New-Mailbox "Public Folder Mailbox" -PublicFolder -HoldForMigration
Method 2: Remove all public folder databases from earlier versions of Exchange Server
To remove existing public folder databases, see the following TechNet websites, as appropriate for the version of Exchange that an existing public folder resides on.
