Exchange 2010 - how to troubleshoot intermittent Outlook slowness

I'm having users report intermittent Outlook slowness 2007.  I can't repeat the issue exactly but I have seen it -- you get a message that says "Outlook is trying to retrieve data from <Exchange Server>" and it takes it a noticeable
amount of time.  One of the difficulties in troubleshooting this is that I haven't seen it on my own machine, nor can I find the way to replicate the issue consistantly.
We actually just upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and never had these issues in the past.   I've run a process monitor on the server (which is about 8 times better than our old Exchange 2003 server - 2 quad-core procs and 12 GB of
RAM for about 250 mailboxes) and find nothing abnormal in terms of CPU time or network bandwidth usage (4 teamed 1 GB/s connections).  I have also monitored several of the Exchange RPC items, and Client: RPCs but Client:RPCs does not return anything
at all (just 0 the whole time).   Are there other things I should be looking at with PerfMon?
I'm at a point where I'm not sure where to take my troubleshooting.  Does anyone have any ideas?  The fact that I (and most other users I've asked) never experience the issue leads me to believe that it might have something to do with a
local computer issue rather than a server issue, but I'm hearing reports from people with both Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010.  The other somewhat common thread is that
Outlook is NOT running in cached exchange mode, but it wasn't when we were on the 2003 server either and we did not have this issue.   Our Exchange 2010 Server is now running the new UM role, however, and we were using Cisco Unity before.
I have already disabled all Outlook add-ins and disabled anti-virus (client, but not Nod32 for Exchange).
Thanks, any ideas would be appreciated.

Forgot you're using 2010, the item counts are much more laxed, 100,000 per folder compared to 5000 in Exchange 2007. For your Outlook 2007 clients, can you confirm you're up to date on the last post hotfixes as of Feb 2011? Also I would disable caching
of shared calendars in outlook. Also note that outlook 2010 caches all shared mailboxes by default.
Turn off calendar caching. If you have Exchange in use then Outlook 2007 may well have the caching of people’s calendars turned on. This means that when you open a calendar you have to wait for the cache to populate, which can slow
things down a bit sometimes. To do this:
Go to the Tools Menu and select Account Settings
Select your Exchange Account and press the change button
Press the more settings button
Select the 2nd tab (Advanced)
Un-tick the “Download shared folders” option. Note that this will stop cached Sharepoint folders from downloading into Outlook as well.
Press OK until all options are saved.

  • Exchange 2010: How to renew an SSL certificate?

Hi all.  I have done some reading but it seems I can't find just a simple step-by-step on how to renew an SSL certificate issued by a 3rd party CA for Exchange 2010.  I really don't want to mess this one up by cobbling together partial answers
from various forums and end up omitting something, then being stuck unable to figure out why I broke email while the CEO flips out.
This is a standard GoDaddy 5-domain UCC certificate.  There is only one Exchange server, SP3 (I don't think I have Rollup 6 on yet).  The existing certificate expires in a month or so.
I have some specific questions but perhaps these would be answered via what I hope will be a step by step instruction set in your reply :) Sorry to appear lazy by asking for the full instructions just that so far no single forum post nor MS TechNet article
has addressed all my concerns, or in some cases information conflicts.  So my concerns for example are:  can you do a renewal for a certificate before the old one expires?  It is actually a renewal, or are you adding a 2nd certificate?
Do you have to do anything in IIS or does EMC or EMS do all that for you?
    Thank you.

-->Can you do a renewal for a certificate before the old one expires?
Yes. Normally 3rd party CA allows you to renew certificate before the current one expires.
-->It is actually a renewal, or are you adding a 2nd certificate?
You have to renew the certificate and a new/second certificate will be added to your server certificate store. Please check below for detailed step of Godaddy renewal. http://stevehardie.com/2013/10/how-to-renew-a-godaddy-exchange-2010-ssl-certificate/
-->Do you have to do anything in IIS or does EMC or EMS do all that for you?
You will have to do it from MMC or EMS. No need to do anything from IIS.
Follow the steps below to make your work easy or follow the video in this site site.http://www.netometer.com/video/tutorials/Exchange-2010-how-to-renew-SSL-certificate/
    1. Run this command from EMS to generate CSR. You can see the CSR named "newcsr.txt" in C:\CSR
    folder
    Set-Content -path "C:\CSR\newcsr.txt" -Value (New-ExchangeCertificate -GenerateRequest -KeySize 2048 -SubjectName "c=US, s=WA, l=Bellavue, o=Contoso, cn=commonname.domain.com" -DomainName autodiscover.domain.com -PrivateKeyExportable $True)
    2. Renew the certificate from Godaddy (from Godaddy portal) using the new CSR (i.e. newcsr.txt). Download the certificate from Godaddy after renewal.
    3. Open Exchange MMC. Go to Server configuration. Right click on the pending request.  Click on complete pending request and browse to the newly downloaded certificate. Make sure you have internet when doing this.
    4. Assign services using the steps in the below site. Make sure you have selected the new certificate. You will see the thumbprint just before completion http://exchangeserverpro.com/how-to-assign-an-ssl-certificate-to-exchange-server-2010-services/
5.Delete the old one certificate from MMC.
    From EMS use this command
    Remove-ExchangeCertificate -Thumbprint <old cert thumprint>
You can see the the certificate thumprints using Get-ExchangeCertificate command
MAS. Please dont forget to mark as answer if it helped.

  • Forefront for exchange 2010 - how long?

    Hi there.
    Read this article: http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2012/09/12/important-changes-to-forefront-product-roadmaps.aspx
    I would have additional question.
Our company is MS Gold Partner and we need to renew our yearly license every year around AUGUST.
We are thinking about changing our SPAM filter external gateway with exchange edge, but as we can see from that article, you Will be unable to renew it license after December 2015.
I know that Microsoft offers online Forefront protection but that is not option in our case because of data sensitivity. We need an answer how long we Will be able to get updates regarding forefront for exchange 2010 and be licensed ok?
I guess after 2015 december Forefront Exchange 2010 Will no longer recieve spam updates thru Windows update, right?
And also engines Will not be updated after that date?
Is this the correct view and understanding?
    with best regards

    >>how long we Will be able to get updates regarding forefront for exchange 2010 and be licensed ok?
I think you must have seen the information below in that blog.
For current customers, Microsoft will continue to support the subscription through Dec.31, 2015. If customer subcriptions expire before Dec.31, 2015, and annot be renewed because the product is no longer offered, these products will continue to be supported
through that date in order to provided with customers sufficient time to move to alternative solutions.

  • Exchange 2010. Trying to publish Outlook Anywhere. Weird config

I currently have Outlook 2010 with OWA published behind TMG firewall. I want to not change any config on OWA (it is forms based authentication). I do not have another IP so I am not sure I can use another listener. I dont want to buy another cert. Want to
use the OWA cert for Outlook Anywhere. Do not want to use Autodiscover (in fact I need internal clients to NEVER EVER EVER EVER find Outlook Anywhere). I want it to be on a need to know basis and only work if explciit settings are manually entered on the client.
I do need to to work on external non domain joined computers (in fact that is the only place I want to use Outlook Anywhere). I did something in Powershell that basically removed Outlook Anywhere's config so thankfully my internal clients do not find it.
So what folders would I need to publish in TMG to make Outlook anywhere work (without autodiscover)?
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
We need to enable Outlook Anywhere on the Client Access server. If the OWA (mail.domain.com) has been published to the Internet, there should be a
valid and trusted SSL certificate assigned with IIS service in your Exchange server.
We can set the External Host Name to match the namespace used for External OWA URL (Https://mail.domain.com/owa):
    Enable-OutlookAnywhere -Server:Server01 -ExternalHostname:mail.contoso.com -ClientAuthenticationMethod:Ntlm -SSLOffloading:$true
For more information about enable Outlook Anywhere in Exchange 2010, please refer to:

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent Internet Issue at a primary school

I would change the password on your wireless and only hand it out to staff that need it or as they ask for it one by one.  That gives you a way to see what is connecting to your network and when it goes down you have a small number of staff that you know have the password.  I would be suspicious also of a AP possibly being set in a bridge mode and is causing a loop in your system.  The DNS could also be a cell phone or cellular enabled laptop/tablet that is sharing it's connection and causing a problem with your system.

I have been struggling for three or four weeks trying to resolve this issue. I am now of the opinion that there are two different issues here each contributing to the problem. To give you a breakdown. The school has two servers, one internet caching/filtering/proxy server, 20 computers, 45 laptops (most wired in, not wireless) and a dozen ipads.About three weeks ago I received reports that the Internet was very slow and timing out frequently. After spending some time troubleshooting the issue, I decided to shut down the children's computers (unplug from network), the wireless access points and the shared area computers. I only had one switch running as I connected everything to that switch.
I left it for about three days - everything seemed to work. So I added the kids computers. Internet continued to work without any issues, but we...

  • Audit failures on Exchange 2010 and password prompts in outlook

Starting last Thursday after I patched my domain controllers and other Windows systems and rebooted my Outlook users are being prompted for username/password continuously and my Exchange security logs reflect audit failures for NTLM which I think is triggering
the prompt. The same users also have an audit success via Kerberos.
If the password prompt it cancelled Outlook can send and receive email just fine but the box continues to pop up occasionally.
I've worked on this for several days now and can't figure it out. The audit logs on the DC's are clean with no audit failures.
The issue is also affecting Visual Studio users who log into a Team Foundation Server, they are continually prompted for credentials and can't get in and the audit logs show the same thing.
I don't think this is an Exchange specific issue but more of a broader authentication problem.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

It is a known issue if you install the following security updates on March 10, 2015:

The user would be prompted with credentials when NTLM is used to authenticate these Active Directory domain users and services.

  • How to troubleshoot intermittent connection drops on Apple LAN (TimeCapsule   AirPorts)

Hi all, I have built out a wireless network for an office space. The network consists of a TimeCapsule acting as a router w/ dhcp and 3 Apple AirPorts acting as access points to the TC. I have gotten reports from users that there has been random connection drops (symptom: wireless internet stops working breaking AirPlay, etc.). Is there a way to review router logs to see what happened? Are there any proactive tools I can install to monitor connection drops?
I have Logmein Central and can make one of the computers a Logmein Pro client but the alerting on that is very weak, looking for something more. Please help!

  • Internal outlook client connectivity in exchange 2010 when coexist with exchange 2013

    Hi all ,
on my side i would like to clarify few queries.
Say for instance i am coexisting exchange 2010 with exchange 2013 .Unfortunately if all of my exchange 2013 servers goes down .
Q1 .On that time will the internal outlook users having their mailboxes on exchange 2010 can be able to connect mailboxes without any issues ? In case if they face any issues what kind of issues will they be? Because why i am asking is we should have pointed
the autodiscover service to exchange 2013 during coexistence.
When an user closes and reopens the outlook after whole exchange 2013 environment failure ,outlook will first query the autodiscover service for the profile changes to get it updated on users outlook profile. In such case autodiscover service will not be
reachable and i wanted to know will that affects the internal client connectivity for outlook users having their mailboxes on exchange 2010.
Q2. Apart from outlook internal users connectivity ,what kind of exchange services(i.e owa, active sync, pop, external OA and imap) will get affected when whole exchange 2013 environment goes down during coexistence ?
I have read the below mentioned statement on this awesome blog but still i wanted to clarify with you all on my scenario.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/12/client-connectivity-in-an-exchange-2013-coexistence-environment.aspx<o:p></o:p>
    Internal Outlook Connectivity
For internal Outlook clients using RPC/TCP connectivity whose mailboxes exist on Exchange 2010, they will still connect to the Exchange 2010 RPC Client Access array endpoint.
For internal Outlook clients using RPC/TCP connectivity whose mailboxes exist on Exchange 2007, they will still connect directly to the Exchange 2007 Mailbox server instance hosting the mailbox.
Please share me your suggestions and that would help me a lot .
    Regards
    S.Nithyanandham

    Hi Winnie Liang ,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Scenario  1 : for internal outlook connectivity
We have below settings for exchange 2010 autodiscover.
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for internal autodiscover URI for all the exchange 2010 cas serves
We are going to have below settings for exchange 2013 autodiscover.
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for internal autodiscover URI for all the exchange 2013 cas serves
During coexistence mail.domain.com will be pointed to exchange 2013 cas servers . I mean to say if we try to resolve the mail.domain.com it will get resolved in to the exchange 2013 cas servers.
So on such case if anything happened wrong to the new environment or else if entire environment goes down .Do we face any issues while outlook users connect to existing mailboxes in exchange 2010 ?
Because why i am asking is ,on the below mentioned article i have read all the autodiscover request will go via exchange 2013 cas servers during coexistence. That means all the existing mailboxes in exchange 2010 will also have to query exchange 2013 cas
servers for autodiscover request.During the whole exchange 2013 environemnt failure whenever the user tries to close and open outlook .Outlook will first queries the autodiscover service for any changes happened on that particular mailbox and it will try to
get it updated on user profile.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/12/client-connectivity-in-an-exchange-2013-coexistence-environment.aspx
Would it be possible to make the exchange 2010 mailbox users to query only the scp points which belongs to the exchange 2010 cas servers for autodiscover request ?
    Scenario 2: For exchange services
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for all the exchange 2010 services (i.e owa, activesync, external outlook anywhere, pop, imap)
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for all the exchange 2013 services (i.e owa, activesync, external outlook anywhere, pop, imap)
What about the above services will it get affected during whole exchange 2013 environment failure ?
Note : We are not facing this issue , i hope everything goes well in my environment while doing coexistence i am just asking this question on my own interest?

  • Exchange 2013 / 2010 co-existence - Outlook won't connect to Exchange 2010 mailboxes

Greetings!  I have a lab set up at home where I have been testing co-existence of Exchange 2013 and 2010 for a future corporate upgrade project.
I am running into some odd behavior.  Any mailbox that has been migrated to Exchange 2013 works just fine, however, when I try to set up Outlook for a mailbox still on Exchange 2010 I  receive errors.  OWA works just fine for these Exchange
2010 mailboxes, it is just Outlook that has the problem.  This is what I am running into:
    1. Outlook uses autodiscover to locate server settings.  It fails at the 'logging on to mail server' step saying that Exchange isn't available; Outlook must be connected, etc.
    2. It then gives me the settings box for Exchange server and Mailbox.  This is auto populated with one of the Exchange 2013 servers (there are 3 of them, all have both MBX and CAS role).  If I then change the server to the Exchange 2010 CAS server,
and hit 'check names', it underlines the very same entries (like it found them this time) that were there initially and goes on to finish the configuration.
    3. When I launch Outlook with this Exchange 2010 user, it fails to open with the error message that the set of folders couldn't be opened.
I've been doing as much research on this as I can.  I've tried disabling IPv6 to no avail.  It seems as if perhaps the issue is with Exchange 2013 proxying the request back to the Exchange 2010 servers but I am not sure what to check in that regards.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Don´t disable IPV6 on an Exchange Server, it is, in my opinion not necessary - also applies for AD.
You can use your original SSL Cert for your new Ex 2013 environment.
In dns you want two host A records: mail.domain.com and autodiscover.domain.com
On your 2013 set your internal and external virtual directories to mail.domain.com
    leave autodiscover and Powershell alone.
Also set the autodiscover URI to your Certificate name ie. mail.domain.com
    Set-ClientAccessServer -Identity "YourCASServer" -AutoDiscoverServiceInternalUri "https://mail.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml"
Thanks.  I wanted to give some additional info before I run any commands.  I currently have an A record for autodiscover and it is pointed to the Exchange 2013 DAG/cluster IP.  I have a 3 entries for mail.domain, for DNS round robin; basically
it is listed 3 times for the IP of each of my Exchange 2013 servers.  Does any of this sound problematic?

  • Outlook 2003 Free/Busy only shows 2 months for users on Exchange 2010

    Hi,
We are moving to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2003 and have noticed that users who have been created on or migrated to Exchange 2010 who also use Outlook 2003 can only see 2 months worth of free busy information.
After doing some testing this is only an issue if the user who is looking at the free busy is located on Exchange 2010 and they are using Outlook 2003.  It doesn't matter if the mailboxes they are looking at are on Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2010.
If the user uses Outlook 2007 they see free/busy past 2 months.
We configure Outlook to publish 12 months of free/busy.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
According to your description, the issue only happens in Outlook 2003 but not in other Outlook versions. Please check whether there is the Auto Accept Agent installed in your Exchange server. This issue occurs when you register the Auto Accept Agent to process
meeting requests for the affected mailbox.
Here is a KB related to this issue. Please follow it to configure the period for which you want to publish Free/Busy information in a registry entry on the Microsoft Exchange Server on which you have installed the Auto Accept Agent:
The published Free/Busy information for a mailbox is displayed for the default period of two months after you have configured a longer period in Outlook
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917687
The free/busy publish range reverts back to the default setting when you direct book a resource in Outlook 2003
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905817
Additionally, I recommend you upgrade your Outlook 2003 clients to Outlook 2010/2013 for better working. Because Microsoft ended support for Office 2003 on April 8, 2014.

  • Outlook 2007-2010 keeps asking to login to exchange 2010 sp2

We Have Migrated our system from small business 2003 to small business 20011 using exchange 2010
there is varies versions outlooks working 2003/2007/20010 on windows XP and 7 workstations
Most are in the office on a 1 GB Lan but a number run across a software VPN
some not all Outlook 2007/2010 versions keeps asking to be login some regular, some only every couple hours
    OWA works Fine no issues

    Hey Alan
If you have enabled web-based publishing of your Offline Address Book (OAB) and your Outlook users get continuously prompted to enter their passwords, you need to check a couple of things:
Make sure Autodiscover is working perfectly before you made the OAB change.
Hold down the CTRL button and right click on the Outlook icon on the task bar, then select
Test Email Autoconfiguration. Unselect GuessSmart and Secure GuessSmart and keep
Use Autodiscover selected. On the Log tab, make sure Autodiscover is successful and that it was able to bind to an SCP.
Make sure that the autodiscover.domain.com entry is added to your certificate’s
    Subject Alernative Names list.
If you are facing problems with Autodiscover, you should correct that first before attempting the steps mentioned below.
Make sure that you have defined the External and Internal URLs for the OAB virtual directory in your client access server.
Once you have made sure that Autodiscover is working OK, and that the credentials are being prompted for the OAB URL (and not the mailbox server), you need to check the IIS Authentication setting on the client access server.
On the Client Access Server running Windows Server 2008, open IIS Manager console.
    Click on Default Web Site
    Open Authentication
Note that only Anonymous Authentication is enabled. All other authentication methods should be disabled.
    Temporarily enable Windows Authentication
Right click on Windows Authentication and choose Advanced Settings
Uncheck Enable Kernel Mode Authentication and click
    OK
    Disable Windows Authentication
    Do an IISRESET
Also make sure that kernel-mode authentication is disabled for the RPC virtual directory.
Restart Outlook. You should no longer get the prompt for credentials. Test the configuration with Outlook Anywhere clients as well, if you have enabled Outlook Anywhere on your Client Access Servers.
You may need to repeat this configuration on all Client Access Servers that are enabled for Web-based publishing of Offline Address Book (OAB).

  • Outlook 2010 Exchange 2010 Read Receipt Request for all emails cannot be switched OFF.

I have a strange situation with an Outlook 2010 client using Exchange 2010. The user has Outlook configured so that Under Options/Mail/Tracking - that "Read receipt confirming the recipient has viewed the message" is turned off. Yet everytime she
sends a message, the option to request pops up on the recipient's outlook.
I have tried to toggle the option on and off to no avail. I can switch the Delivery Receipt request on and off and it is no issue.
Can anyone tell me what attribute in ADSIEdit or Exchange is that seems to be stuck ON?

    Hi,
I believe you would like to block this only for the user and not for your ORG... ??
Although, you can block this for your entire ORG.
what happens is that the Read receipt contains a "Disposition-Notification-To"
If we get rid of this header we can restrict the receiver to get that prompt.
we can create a Transport rule either for the entire org or for that specific user by making an adjustment in the "exception tab"
for more info refer this blog.
