Exchange 2010 sends attachments as winmail.dat

Hi
Some users are complaining about pdf attachements they received as winmail.dat. This is an internally isue.
For external mail flow I disabled tnef conversion, seems to work. Is there a possibility to do the same thing for the internal mail flow?
Regards
Peter

Hi PeterN22,
Winmail.dat attachments are included in received e-mail messages is because the Winmail.dat file is used to preserve formatting that the sending
client includes in the message, but the receiving client does not recognize the Winmail.dat file.(The original message attachment is not always separate from the Winmail.dat file attachment, and may be included in the Winmail.dat file attachment.)
So it is important to clarify what clients were involved in both the sending and receiving the messages in question.
If this is occur in Outlook, here is a related document for you:
Winmail.dat attachments are included in received e-mail messages in Outlook

  • Exchange 2010 Send Connector to postfix (v. 2.11) smarthost uses STARTTLS and cannot connect

    Dear all,
I am having problems with exchange 2010 sending emails through a postfix smarthost server which disconnects the sessions. I also use a sendmail as a smarthost

and if you take a look at the lines in bold you will see that mails can be delivered over TLS to that very Exchange server (the mailboxes are on that server)...
    To summarise:
exchange --> postfix with TLS = session disconnected (and everything seems to be initiated by the exchange server -if I read the logs correctly)
postfix --> exchange with TLS = works
    any further hints?

  • Can't Restore Exchange 2010 Mailbox DB from HP Data Protector backup

I'm trying to implement Exchange 2010, but I won't feel comfortable moving many users to it until I've successfully restored a mail database from tape backup.  So far, this hasn't worked out so well.  I'm using HP Data Protector for my backup solution.
    Here's what I've done:
    1.  In DP's "Restore" GUI, navigated down to the MS Volume Shadow Copy Writers entry, then selected both "Files" and "Logs" from the DB's entry under Microsoft Information Store.  I'm not restoring any of the other Writers.  So that I don't have to take down Exchange, I'm restoring them to a temporary restore location.
    2. After the restore completes, I go to the temporary restore location on the server and run eseutil /mh on the database, which returns a "Dirty Shutdown" db status.
    3.  Since I have the log files, I attempt to repair using eseutil /r E01 in the log files' path.  This generates "Operation terminated with error -1216 (JET_errAttachedDatabaseMismatch, An outstanding database attachment has been detected at the start or end of recovery, but database is missing or does not match attachment info) after 10.608 seconds."
Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong with this recovery?  If my steps are incorrect I'd love to know, as HP's documentation for restoring Exchange 2010 is very young and not terribly useful.  My ultimate goal is to be able to restore a database from DP's tapes and bring it back online on the Exchange 2010 server.
    Thanks!
    Thanks!

    Hi Ben,
We backup our primary database (Ex Writer) and always with full backup (DB+LOGS). When we restore we restore to alternate location, then manualy copy db file and everything from restored log directory to one folder (for example: d:\restore_DB1). At this
stage DB is in dirty shutdown state. Then we run (in folder where we copied db file and log files)
    Eseutil.exe /R E00 /D
it takes a couple of seconds (160GB file) and the db is in clean shutdown state. Then we do:
New-MailboxDatabase -Name “Restored DB” -Server MBOX1 -EDBFilePath “D:\Restore_DB1\DB1.edb”
    -Logfolderpath “D:\Restore_DB1” -Recovery
    and
    Mount-Database “Restored DB”
now we can restore single mailbox or even single item from mailbox with:
1: whole mailbox with overite the destination
Restore-Mailbox –Identity “USERNAME” –RecoveryDatabase “Restored DB”
    2. whole mailbox to alternate location (new folder in another mailbox)
Restore-Mailbox –Identity “EXISTING MAILBOX TO RESOTRE TO” –RecoveryDatabase “Restored DB” –RecoveryMailbox “MAILBOX DO BE RESTORED
FROM BACKUP” –TargetFolder “NEW FOLDER IN EXISTING MAILBOX”
    3. the same as 2 but single item with MEETING in email subject
Restore-Mailbox –Identity “EXISTING MAILBOX TO RESOTRE TO” –RecoveryDatabase “Restored DB” –RecoveryMailbox “MAILBOX DO BE RESTORED
FROM BACKUP” -SubjectKeywords "MEETING" –TargetFolder “NEW FOLDER IN EXISTING MAILBOX”

  • UAG 2010 SP3 - OWA Exchange 2010 - Large attachments fail to open

We have a UAG 2010 SP3 server in front of Exchange 2010 CAS. On the UAG side we have disabled the component installation and activation for UAG within the session configuration. When users access OWA and open attachments it works fine up until a certain
size of an attachment. Somewhere around 10MB we are unable to download externally from OWA. At that point when clicking on the attachment a "The page cannot be displayed" is received.
Attachments of sizes larger than 10MB are able to be opened internally accessing the CAS directly. Under the Download/Upload configuration of the OWA application in UAG Identify by URL is checked for both (Uploads has Identify by size but Download
    is unchecked).
Is there a limitation on UAG to OWA download size? Is there any other configuration that should be checked to alleviate this issue?

  • Exchange 2010 DAG Replication - too much data crossing the wire

I’m replicating 3 Exchange databases from our production active Exchange 2010 server across the WAN to another passive Exchange 2010 server at our DR site.
The Exchange server at the DR site does not have any active databases, i.e. no users are hitting that server.
We are running Update Rollup 8 for Exchange Server 2010 SP1 on both these servers.
The two sites are connected via a 10Mb/s MPLS connection and all the databases are in sync and the replication is working fine.
I have setup a network sniffer at the primary site and see a sizable amount of data crossing the wire from the production Exchange server to the DR Exchange server.
When I query the production Exchange server using the Tracking Log explorer and only choose the EventID ‘RECEIVED’ that should show me the amount of data that has been committed to the database.
If I choose a date range that is the same exact range that I have used to capture the raw data with my sniffer the amount of data the sniffer shows crossing the wire is 10 fold compared to what the Tracking Log Explorer shows.
If I actually count up the data in the LOG files it is about 20% more than what is crossing the wire but that seems to be because the DAG is compressing the data.
If in a one hour timeframe there is 500MB of data crossing the wire to the DR Exchange server the tracking log explorer will show only 50MB.
I would like to know why the data crossing the wire far exceeds the amount of data that is truly being sent/received from the primary exchange server.
Perhaps I’m simply not getting a true view of the amount of data being committed to the exchange server using the Tracking Log Explorer.
Maybe there is a better way to report how much data is being committed to the exchange databases.
    Any assistance would be appreciated…

    Two things.
1 - you must update Exchange to SP3 and a recent RU.  Willard has already provided the links, which point back to my blog if you want to see the lifecycle map for Exchange 2010.  SP1 has been out of support since January 2013.  Time to move
    on pllease
2 - Looking at the tracking log is not sufficient.  I would not expect that to show everything.
I want to know what traffic you see as excessive.  What ports are you seeing used here?
My money is on content indexing.  CI will use additional traffic over and above log repl traffic.  Expect CI traffic to be roughly the same again.  You can test this by disabling CI on the database or stopping the services on the DR server.
To disable the CI for the database:
    Set-MailboxDatabase DBName -indexEnabled $False
Or stop the Exchange search services on the DR box to leave production unaffected.
Again - you need to update Exchange.  You would be better to do that now rather than when something breaks and Microsoft support cannot fully assist you since you are not uptodate.    I'll leave discussion of the security issues resolved
    in recent Exchange RUs aside.

  • Exchange 2010 - Send Connector High Availability

    Hi All,
I performed a successful migration a few years back from a single node Exchange 2003 server to a two node Exchange 2010 organisation with a DAG and Kemp load balanced CAS array.  The solution works well and when we simulate a site failure
I am able to get the second node to handle all mail functions.
The one problem I have though is that I have to manually disable the send connector on the primary server in order for the one on the secondary server to be in use.  I should explain that I have two send connectors as I do not want the secondary server
to be used unless the primary server is down or the route is unavailable.  I realise that Exchange 2010 does not know whether the SMTP route is down or not so will just continue trying to use the send connector from the primary server (until I tell it
    not to by disabling it).
My question is how do I get this to happen automatically?  Does anyone else have an example of how this could be done or use a PowerShell script to achieve this?  I guess a script could check the route and disable the send connector on the primary
server if necessary, but how would one do this?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Rob

    Hi,
According to your description, your secondary send connector cannot be automatically used when the first one is down. If I misunderstand your meaning, please feel free to let me know.
If yes, I’d like to confirm if the settings of the secondary one is same with the first one and we can check the connectivity logs including diagnostic information for Healthy Server Selector.

  • Exchange 2010: Send As Permission for group mailbox...

Our helpdesk has a shared mailbox used for users to submit issues.  Up until a week ago, all of the helpdesk techs could send-as the shared mailbox.
Now when they attempt to send as the shared mailbox via Outlook they get the error "You do not have the permission to send the message on behalf of the specified user.".  When I attempt to manage send as permission via EMC (using an account
with Domain Admin privileges) I've found that the list of users who can send as is blank.  When I attempt to add send as permissions via EMC I get the error below:
    domain\username
    Failed
    Error:
Active Directory operation failed on DC1.xxxxxx.local. This error is not retriable. Additional information: Access is denied.

Anyone have any advice to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I got this sorted.  Here's the fix:
On the problem account:  Open up active directory > Select the target user account > properties > Security Tab > advanced button.  If
you cannot see the Security tab you have to go to view > advanced features
On the Permissions tab put a check mark in Allow inheritable permissions from
    the parent and click ok

  • Exchange 2010 Send mail

We have Exchange setup but are running into an issue where anyone can spoof an email account from our domain and it goes out using SMTP through command prompt. I want to know if it is possible to set up Exchange so whenever anyone tries to send an email
out from our domain it verifies the account exists and also looks for a password. This will prevent people from being able to send email pretending they are someone else. Here are accouple examples
    1) I can use [email protected] and send an email to [email protected] and it goes through with no password required using smtp through command prompt both accounts exist but the sender is not really josh.smith.
    2) I can send an email from [email protected] to [email protected] but [email protected] does not exist on the domain.
    Thanks
    Kevin

There are two ways to do this - 1) you can configure your receive connectors to only allow messages from specific IP addresses, or 2) you can configure the ms-exch-smtp-accept-authoritative-domain-sender permission on the domain (use Get-ReceiveConnector
    “Internet ReceiveConnector” | Get-ADPermission -user “NT AUTHORITY\Anonymous Logon” | where {$_.ExtendedRights -like “ms-exch-smtp-accept-authoritative-domain-sender”} | Remove-ADPermission
to do this).  The first allows messages inbound from the Internet, which may be useful when people use their internal address for signing up on external websites.  The second blocks everything using your domain that's not authenticated.

  • Exchange 2010 - Send / Recieve Limits

    Hi All,
I'm facing this weird issue where my send and receive limits are not the same, currently I'm unable to receve a large sized mail even though my receive limits are at that rate. What I've noticed is its hitting my Send Limit. What is the reason for this I've
seen a few posts on this on the internet but I find it a little hard to believe I will Post those article links here too.
    Links with similar Issue:

    Please Advice,
    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Michael

    Hi Amy / Andy,
I'm aware of the three places to change the limits and that User level limits take precedence when authenticated only.
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-TransportConfig | ft maxsendsize, maxreceivesize
    MaxSendSize
    MaxReceiveSize
    12.01 MB (12,595,200 bytes)                                 30.27 MB (31,744,000 bytes)
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-ReceiveConnector | ft name, maxmessagesize
    Name
    MaxMessageSize
Edge Server to Hub Transport Server                         30.27 MB (31,744,000 bytes)
Edge Server to Hub Transport Server                         30.27 MB (31,744,000 bytes)
[PS] C:\Windows\system32>Get-SendConnector | ft name, maxmessagesize
    Name
    MaxMessageSize
EdgeSync - Inbound to Default-First-Site-Name               unlimited
    EdgeSync - Default-First-Site-Name to Internet               30.27 MB (31,744,000 bytes)
My Problem is External Mail that is being sent to an Internal User is hitting the Send Connector Org Limit when it shouldn't be and I'm getting the NDR of message size exceeded.
    Thanks and Best Regards,
    Michael

  • How do i open winmail.dat attachments in mail

How do i open winmail.dat attachments in mail ?

Having problems with Winmail.dat attachments?  This is really Windows problem but their hubris will not allow them to admit it.
Windows does have a global fix for this problem but it is not a general patch - in their KB there is a fix for Exchange servers which cause the winmail.dat problem but most users don't know about it or have it implemented.

Here is a solution that Apple users can get for $30.  An Austrian program and APP called Letter Opener http://www.creativeinaustria.com/http:// is the solution to seamlessly opening Winmail.dat files.
