Exchange 2010 SP3 install question

Greetings!  I am planning on installing the SP3 update for Exchange 2010 in preparation for a Hybrid deployment with O365.  After installing the SP3 update to all Exchange servers in our environment, I was going to then install the RU8 on the servers.
Hopefully I can perform all of this during one maintenance window.  I have already performed the schema update for SP3 during our most recent maintenance window.
I have been scouring the forums for any potential upgrade issues.  I wanted to know if there was any concern about the RU8 update for SP3 that might affect our environment from past experience of other admins; whether it be Outlook clients (we use mostly
Outlook 2010 with some Outlook 2013) or OWA.  We are currently on SP2, RU6.
Thanks in advance!

Hi,
As what Amit mentioned above, you can upgrade from Exchange 2010 SP2 RU6 to SP3 RU8, as long as this version is supported for Hybrid deployment with O365.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb629560(v=exchg.141).aspx
To DAGs, please consider the following conditions:
Upgrade passive servers first. Place server in maintenance mode if any monitoring applications are in use. Stop any scheduled tasks or other processes running on the DAG member or within that DAG that could adversely affected the DAG member being upgraded
or the upgrade process.

  • Exchange 2010 SP3 install

    Hi,
I am running with Exchange 2010 SP1 in DAG & CAS/HUB in cluster mode. need to upgrade to SP3. few things need to know
    1. Schema upgrade will be done I as read in the article. can this create any issue? what is the best measure to safeguard any problems of schema upgrade. Do we do this along with exchange setup or we should run schema upgrade prior to install exchange 2010
    SP3?
    2. Any impact on active sync, outlook anywhere & HUB connectors side post SP3?
    3. Do we need to take any exchange related backups as we are running mailbox, CAS/HUB servers in redundant mode?
    Please share your experiences.
    Regards,
    VIpin

    Hello,
    1. It is a good practice to run schema updates before launching Exchange update. You should also make backups of your domain controllers before any schema updates because these
particular changes cannot be rolled back easily.
    3. Yes, you should have backups (tested!) of your Exchange servers. Server's redundancy (DAG's, CAS Arrays etc) doesn't protect your servers if the update fails.
    Hope it helps,

Help Desk is a universal Microsoft Exchange Security Group created when you run Setup.com /PrepareAD:
If it was deleted you need to restore it.
Do you have AD recycle bin? maybe you can restore it from there. otherwise a restore of that group will be needed:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd379509(v=ws.10)
There is another way of deleting all Exchange Security Group and recreate them, but I'm not sure its supported method (if you choose - do it on your own risk):

  • Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup Update 6

Our Exchange environment is currently on Exchange 2010 SP3 RU3 and the Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange server version is 11.0.713.0 (Rollup 3).
We planning to upgrade Exchange servers and install Exchange 2010 SP3 RU6, question which I have is it Mandatory to upgrade the Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange server version is 11.0.727.0 (Rollup 4) before we install Exchange 2010 SP3 RU6 on the
    Exchange servers.
    Thanks,
    AJ

Thanks Adam for the prompt response and yes I recall these cmdlets to disable and there is a similar cmdlet to enable it. Also after Exchange 2010 SP2 after some RU there is no need to disable FPE before installing RU however it is recommended to disable
    it.
If you refer the comments section mentioned in the blog below it talks about it:-
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/05/27/released-update-rollup-6-for-exchange-2010-service-pack-3.aspx
If you read the comment posted by James Knoch posted on this blog which is as below,
SP3 & the Rollup Updates are not supposed to require you to disable Forefront anymore, but it doesn't hurt to be safe and disable/enable it anyways. Make sure you are running Forefront Rollup 4 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2619883)
& the latest security update (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41836).
Above stated confused me a bit, is it mandatory to upgrade Forefront or it is NOT.
    Thanks,
    AJ

  • Exchange 2010 SP3 and UR6 Query - Order of Install

    hi,
I need to update my Exchange 2010 SP2 Servers to SP3 and Update Rollup 6.
Can someone confirm the update order for me?
    I have 5 servers;
    Live Data Centre:
2 x HUB / CAB (Using Windows NLB)
    2 x Mailbox (DAG)
    Disaster Recovery:
1 x Multi-Role Server (CAS / HUB and Mailbox) - this is also Part of the DAG
    Two Questions:
1.) What is the Order in which I install SP3 on these Servers? Should it be Live Data Centre: HUB / CAS, Mailbox Servers and THEN the Multi-Role Server at DR?
2.) When Upgrading each server, should I do SP3, reboot, check and THEN install Update Rollup 6 - or should I upgrade all Servers to SP3 and then start the process again to get to Update Rollup 6?
Thanks in advance for your help with this query.
    Regards,
    Adam

    1) Internet facing CAS first in each AD site. Order: CAS> HUB> UM> MBX
    2) Personally, I would install SP3, reboot, then install SP6, but its really up to you.

    Dear All,
From Microsoft Exchange support matrix, I can tell that Exchange 2010 Sp3 is not listed on supported page. However when I run the setup, the prerequisite setup check, dose not list any warnings or issues with the setup, all check are green. Is it possible
that the support OS matrix has not been updated? Is Exchange 2010 Sp3 supported on Windows 2012 R2?

The prerequisite check is checking that the required Windows components are installed.  Exchange 2010 is still not supported on Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • Unable to install rollup4 for Exchange 2010 SP3

    Hi,
I'm unable to install KB2905616 on my multi-role Exchange 2010 SP3 server. The setup wizard gets stuck at "the setup wizard is generating native images for .NET assemblies........"
I know that this process will take some time to complete but I have waited 10 hours.

    Hi,
I recommend you check if the anti-virus has been disabled before you start the upgrade process.
If you didn't ,the update could fail or take an extended amount of time.
Also, disable all other third-party apps/plugins that might be installed (like backup agents).
In addition, the following articles for your reference:

  • Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6 to Exchange 2010 SP3

    Hi there,
I am planning to install Exchange 2010 SP3 next week and after reading some of the related comments on this site I got a little worried.
Our current Exchange environment consists of the following:
    1 x CAS/HT Server
2 x Mailbox Server (members of a DAG)
The OS of the 3 servers is Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. All servers are running Exchange 2010 SP1 Update Rollup 6.
The Execution Policies on our Exchange servers are set as follows:
    – CAS/HT Server:
      Scope ExecutionPolicy
      MachinePolicy Undefined
      UserPolicy Undefined
      Process Undefined
      CurrentUser Undefined
      LocalMachine Unrestricted
    – Mailbox Servers:
      Scope ExecutionPolicy
      MachinePolicy Undefined
      UserPolicy Undefined
      Process Undefined
      CurrentUser Undefined
      LocalMachine RemoteSigned
Please note that we do not have any Group Policies that defined the PowerShell script execution policy.
I would be very grateful if you (or any of the kind readers) could help me with following questions:
1- Do I have to change the execution policy on our Exchange servers before installing SP3? If I have to change a policy, what should I change? And how would you recommend I should do this?
2- After installing SP3 on a server, can I install the latest rollup update on this server before moving to the next server? For example, can I do the following:
      i. Install SP3 followed by RU 5 on the CAS/HT server -> Apply the our custom settings
ii. Install SP3 followed by RU 5 on the first mailbox server
iii. Install SP3 followed by RU 5 on the second mailbox server
    Many thanks,
    M

    Hi Amit,
Many thanks for the swift reply.
That's correct.  We didn't set the Powershell execution policy via Group Policy.  We only configured the execution policy of "LocalMachine" to "Unrestricted" on the CAS/HT server using the "Set-ExecutionPolicy" command on the server.
The mailbox servers' execution policies have not been changed and are set to those values by default.
I must admit, I go event more confused when I read the "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2668686" and "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2810617" articles.
But it looks like I shouldn't worry as our current Powershell execution policies shouldn't affect the upgrade. Right?

  • Upgrade Windows 2008 R2 sp1 on an Exchange 2010 SP3 server

I have looked high and low for an answer to this question:
    1. I have Windows 2008 R2 running Exchange 2010 SP3
    2. Can I upgrade Windows 2008 R2 to SP1 with Exchange 2010 SP3 onboard?
    3. Are there pre-requisites for doing this?
    4. If so, where can I get the documentation?
I have spent hours looking through Google and Technet.  Lots of information about compatibility of 2008 R2 and Exchange SP1 and SP2.

    Hi,
    "Can I upgrade Windows 2008 R2 to SP1 with Exchange 2010 SP3 onboard?"
    Yes, you can.

There is no pre-requisites, however, as what Idan Vexler mentioned above, downtime is required.
