Exchange 2013 eseutil /d question

I have a couple questions about offline DB defragging using eseutil /d.
I am about to perform a migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 hybrid on-prem/cloud where the mailboxes will be hosted on premises and the archive mailbox will be hosted in the cloud. As part of this migration, we will be migrating the mailboxes from
2007 to a "temporary" database, then importing PST's (currently housed in a third party archive solution) into the archive mailbox. THEN migrating that archive mailbox to Office365 off-premises. Then running managedfolderassistant with the desired
retention tags to "clean up" the mailbox. Then eventually moving the mailbox in to another database, where it will ultimately reside
Long story short, the "temporary" database will need to grow and shrink beyond the point where normal online defrag will suffice.I will run eseutil /d on the temp database once all users have been moved off of it. I just need to verify that when
running the offline degrag, that it will clean out ALL contents of he database, all deleted items folder, dumpster, deleted mailboxes, etc. I will have litigationholdenabled=true on all these mailboxes. Should I just delete the database and recreate it, rather
than deal with eseutil /d. Let me know what you think of this proposed process...

Hi Troy12n,
Great information on eseutil /d from Gulab Prasad.
Found some good blogs about Offline Defrag, hope it can help us understand it in details:

  • Exchange 2013 Load Balancing Question

    Hey Everyone,
I have recently started building up my companies Exchange 2013 environment and ran into some questions that I can't seem to find clear answers for on Google.
First, a little bit about my set up:
    2 CAS Servers
    2 Mailbox Servers
Citrix NetScaler load balancing the external URL (Controlling all incoming ports 25, 80, 443, 587, 993, and 995) to both of my CAS servers
This is not doing SSL offloading, it's just forwarding encrypted traffic to the CAS servers
I have configured a DAG between the 2 mailbox servers and am able to actively move the database my user account is on between the 2 copies with outlook disconnecting / reconnecting in about 10 - 15 seconds of moving it.
My questions started when I saw what Outlook was filling in for the "Server" field once autodiscover set it up.  I found this very strange server name in it:  *** Email address is removed for privacy ***
Once I read up on it, I think i understand what it does.   If i understand correctly, this weird URL is sort of like an old CAS array from Exchange 2010.  When I started testing the failover is when I started running into issues.
When I shut down one of my mailbox servers, my outlook will lose connection and it won't come back.  The mailbox database that my user account is on successfully failed over to the other DAG copy but outlook never correctly connects.  I
believe this issue has something to do with the new CAS functions of Exchange 2013 since DAG works fine.
If I look at my "Connection Status" in Outlook, I see that there are several connections open.  All of them have a Proxy server address of "exchange.domain.com" and out of the 3 that show up there, they are all pointed to
    the weird URL mentioned above.
Whew, long post but let me summarize my questions below:
    1)  If exchange is configured to be fully redundant, why does my outlook disconnect when I shut down one of the servers?
    2)  What is the weird URL pointing to that I mentioned above that is showing in outlook?
    3)  How can I get outlook to correctly not lose it's connection when any 1 of the servers goes down?
    Thanks,
    Zac

    Hi,
According to your description, it seems that the load balancer did not configure successfully.
I recommend you refer to the following article to configure the load balancer for Exchange 2013 :

  • Archiving migration from Symantec EV to Exchange 2013

    Hi all,
We have a customer who has Exchange 2007 email system and Symantec EV 7 for archiving email. We need to migrate their email from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 and activating Exchange 2013 archives. The customer asks to use this tool "Archive
2-Anywhere" from Archive360 to migrate archives from Symantec EV to Exchange 2013.
My question is I need to do this (migrating a user mailbox archive) in parallel with moving his mailbox to new exchange?

Search the Internet for a phrase like "Migrate Enterprise Vault to Exchange 2013".  You should get some hits for ideas for third-party solutions.

  • Migration questions from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

    Dear Forum Members,
I'd ask just two short questions, regarding a migration from Small Business Server 2008 (Exchange 2007) to 2013. We installed the two Exchange 2013 servers, configured a DAG and updated every single URL (OWA, ECP, AnyWhere, Autodiscover etc.) to be a mail.domain.com
record (DNS round robin, since no HW load balancer :( )
Thankfully, the mail flow between the Internet and the other Exchange 2007 users are still working. Now for those users I've already migrated, if I check outlook connections there are several connections for GUID based servers via the DNS Round Robin
name proxy (the AnyWhere address). But I saw that there are still just one connection (type: Exchange Public Folders) to the old 2007 server. Is it okay? I'm a bit afraid to uninstall it because of this.
And the other thing: Based on what I wrote, do you think I've done it good? Or could I miss any important things? You are much experienced than me in these migrations so I hope that I can get some confirmation/advice here :(
ps: Is it good if I set NTLM authentication for Outlook AnyWhere?
Thank you really much for your help,
    Best Regards,
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
Agree with Hinte, the user will still connect to the exchange 2007 server if there is a public folder database in the old server.
If the old public folders are no longer in use, you can delete the public folder database and create a new one in the exchange 2013 server, you can also consider migrating public folders to Exchange 2013 .

The Outlook Anywhere authentication method you choose will depend on a few factors in your environment,
I recommend you refer to the following thread to understand how to choose:

  • Exchange 2013 Certificate Question

    Hi,
I have an Exchange 2013 and AD servers running on server 2008 R2. When you go to create an outlook account you are prompted that a certificate for mydomain.com.au has expired. When you click to view this certificate, it is referring to "www.mydomain.com.au".
Once you accept the message it goes away, the outlook account sets up OK and the message does not show again unless you set up another account.
The internal domain name is internal.mydomain.com.au. The Exchange server has a valid purchased SSL certificate that applies to autodiscover.mydomain.com.au, mail.mydomain.com.au, mydomain.com.au and the exchange servers internal name until 2015. The "www."
cert and website for this domain is separate to the internal servers and mail. The cert for the website has indeed expired but my question is even though it is the same domain why would this internal exchange server be querying the www. certificate when creating
    an outlook account.
Bit of a tricky question hope I have explained it OK.
    Thanks Robbie

    Hi Robbie,
Your certificate expired issue may occur when using the Autodiscover service and Outlook Anywhere service. Please follow these steps to have a check:
    1. verify the FQDN that the client users to access the resource from Outlook:
    a. Start Microsoft Outlook.
    b. Click File > Account Settings, click Account Settings.
    c. Click the E-mail tab, click the Exchange account, and then click Change.
    d. Click More Settings, and then click the Connection tab.
    e. “Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP” should be checked, then click Exchange Proxy Settings.
    f. Note the FQDN that is listed in the Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate box. For example, mail.contoso.com.
    2. Run the following command in Exchange to determine the value for the CertPrincipalName attribute for EXPR name:
    Get-OutlookProvider
For example, the command returns the following:
    msstd:server1.contoso.com
    3. Modify the CertPrincipalName attribute to match the FQDN that Outlook uses to access the resource:
Set-OutlookProvider EXPR -CertPrincipalName:"msstd:<FQDN the certificate is issued to>"
For the Autodiscover service checking, please open outlook - press CTRL key - right click on the Outlook icon from right bottom corner taskbar - Test Email AutoConfiguration. Put your email address - uncheck use guessmart and secure guessmart authentication
    - click Test to check your Autodiscover service. If possible, please post the Results tab here for more troubleshooting.

  • Exchange 2013 Site Resilience - Basic questions for setup in two seperate AD Sites, same domain

I am just getting ramped up with Exchange 2013 and have a friend that I am assisting with planning an exchange 2013 deployment for.  I am not asking for step by step directions for setup, just asking for a basic overview so I can dig in to this and
    assist.
Goal is to have an exchange server, one in NC and one in Switzerland in an active/passive mode for site resilience.  Both servers will be multi role servers.
This is a small organization, less than 50 users and on a budget for equipment.  HQ is in NC and the server will have all roles installed on a single server. Switzerland will have only one Exchange server for fail over.  There is only
one domain total with two AD Sites.
    My questions for clarity -
    1. Can I create a Site resilient deployment with two Exchange Multi Role servers in these locations?
    2. Currently, the organization does not have a Load Balancer.  Will this be required?
    3. They do not have a third location for a Witness Server, what issues could potentially happen if the witness sits in one of the two sites?
    4. Any other basics for this design are much appreciated.  I am reading a lot, however a little confused as I read through the requirements.
Thanks for your input and direction!
    Wall

    Hi
Please find below answers to your questions.
    1. Can I create a Site resilient deployment with two Exchange Multi Role servers in these locations?
    Yes
    2. Currently, the organization does not have a Load Balancer.  Will this be required?
No you don't need to have a load balancer. As you are setting up the infrastructure in Active / Passive mode you don't need a dedicated LB for this.
    3. They do not have a third location for a Witness Server, what issues could potentially happen if the witness sits in one of the two sites?
The issue with the witness server in primary or DR site is if your witness server is not responding your DAG won't work properly (failover). If you don't have a 3rd site then you can setup a witness server in your primary site and Alternate witness server
    to your DR site.
    4. Any other basics for this design are much appreciated.  I am reading a lot, however a little confused as I read through the requirements.
I would recommend to use Exchange sizing calculator and technet is the best resource for you :)
Kindly mark this as answer if it fulfill your requirements. :)

  • Exchange 2013 Migration Questions

Exchange 2013 SP1 to a new server. I just realized that I have been asking migration questions on the "general" forum. Here's the deal:
We just want to move to a newer server and reuse the "old" server as a DAG member. We have a production exchange 2013 SP1 server and I found that the DB is not on a RAID'ed drive. So, we purchased a server. I installed 2012 R2 and all windows updates.
Then installed exchange 2013 SP1. Then got our AS/AV software installed. When I boot the new server up and login to ECP, it sees all the exchange users, DB and info. So, I followed:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876926(v=exchg.150).aspx
to migrate users and current email to the new DB. However, when users logged in their current email was not there. I also tried to use the ECP migration option and this resulted in the same, users old email was not in their inbox. So I had to perform that
same process on the old DB to get users old email back. I then tried to use the migration option in the ECP->same issue. So as of now, we are on the old DB and things are working fine.
    According to:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997006(v=exchg.65).aspx
When moving from server to server, the DB filename must be the same. The non-production server does not have the same DB filename. Could this be the problem? Could someone point me to documentation on migrating from server to server

So I ran Get-Mailbox -Database “Source Database Name” " -ResultSize Unlimited | New-MoveRequest -TargetDatabase “Target Database Name” and moved all the user mailboxes. Then moved the system mailboxes, public folders and
OAB. Adjusted send connector to reflect new server. Log in as a user, all email is there. Great! Dismount the old DB. Wait a few minutes and user email is still there. Woohoo! Shut down the old exchange server and a few minutes later, all email is gone. Boo!
Boot the old server back up and mount the old DB, all email is back in user inbox. How do I use only the new DB in exchange 2013?
So I just dismounted the old DB and all email stays in users inbox?! So it must be something with the old server that did not get moved over but for the life of me I cant figure out what

  • Exchange 2013 Archiving question

    Hi all,
I have a question on Exchange 2013 Archiving.
In the Default MRM Policy it has the Default 2 year move to archive tag.
When this runs it moves any emails over 2 years old to the users Archive mailbox.
I also know it will recreate the folder structure that was in the inbox.
My question is once it's moved to the users Archive what policy is applied to the emails and folders by default?
When you look at them it just says Using Parent folder Policy.
Would the parent folder be the Archive - %username it's self?  Or is nothing applied and the users must go in a assign a tag to it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
If you apply one retention policy to a mailbox, then this retention policy will be applied to the primary and archive mailbox, this means that the archive mailbox have the same retention policy as primary mailbox.
Here is an example to help you to understand this.
You can use a DPT with the Move to Archive action to move items to the archive mailbox in two years, and a DPT with a deletion action to remove items from the mailbox
in seven years. Items in both primary and archive mailboxes will be deleted after seven years.
You can refer to the following article for more information.

  • IBM Domino to Exchange 2013 Migration question

I've been tasked with looking into migrating our company of 5500+ Domino users to Exchange 2013.  Currently, my Domino servers spread across the county and not all in one location.  Is there a document/guide that can help me get an understanding
on what type of environment I can take my hub/spoke Domino environment to in Exchange?  Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

    hi Hoss,
I have done couple of Migrations from Domino to Exchange Migrations and pretty familiar with this. For this to happen, you have to use a third party tool like Quest or Binary Tree.
Since you said, 5500+ users, I would recommend you using one of the quest or binary tree tools to assist you with this migration. The key to the migration is the design and planning phase.
I am familiar with Quest tools and will give you as much as i know but I am sure every other tool out there is pretty similar in terms of functionality.
you have to purchase Quest licenses and for quest to be installed on your server, you have to go through Quest Professional services or a Quest approved vendor. You cannot install Quest on your own - this is a small drawback that I personally think.
While your Quest servers are being setup, you have to plan out your Exchange server design and for a 6000 user mailbox, you wont have a big of a deal. I need the hardware information that you have purchased for the Exchange servers? are you going
to go physical or virtual? I need to know the user message profile in your existing domino environment (how many emails sent/recived /size per day/per mailbox)? I also need your inputs on how many servers are you planning with Exchange 2013 in total (all roles),
Do you need single item recovery? Do you have any storage contrains? and a 100+ questions. If you get me the answers for what I asked, I am willing to help you with the design fo Exchange 2013.
    Re: Domino:
What version of domino are you running? What is your max mail file size? how many mailboxes (person documents) how many mail-in databases? how is your user account provisioning currently designed? and so on. user account provisioning could be a challenge
because you have to introduce a 3rd party app like FIM or CA's User Management apps to work between your Domino and Exchange (during the time of coexistence) and there is a lot to it.
    All the best!
Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you. Regards, Siva

  • Active directory change question regarding affects on exchange 2013

    Good day,
I have some universal security groups that are meant to be distribution groups in a 2008 R2 active directory forest.  These groups are being utilized by exchange 2013, I plan on turning these groups into global distribution groups in active
directory (all changes will be made in active directory only, not in exchange).
Question is; What will happen to the mail boxes using this group? Will it break the mailbox? How will users be affected?
I plan on doing testing of my own but if someone else has already done this and has ran into issues this will help me out greatly.

    Hi ,
Mail enabled security groups can be used for two purposes.
1.Used to distribute emails to its members.
2.Unlike mail enabled Distribution groups , Mail enabled security groups will have SID value , so it can be mapped on any resources (for eg : share folder ) to get the access permissions to it members.
In your case ,You would like to change the scopes for the mail enabled security groups ,Before changing the group scopes just have a look in to the following link which states clearly about the group scopes and its usage.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755692(v=ws.10).aspx

  • Exchange 2013 backup and log truncation question

I have a scenario where I have 5 Exchange mailbox servers as members of a DAG, everything running fine, log truncation is working, but seems to be working differently than I am expecting it to work, as in previous versions of Exchange. I am used to the
logs being truncated immediately after the full backup completes. What is happening is that the server is retaining a weeks worth of logs. Everything older than 7 days gets truncated after a full backup completes. Is this expected behavior? I am running Exchange
2013 CU3 on Server 2012, backup software is HP Data Protector 8 running the latest updates. I am running a VSS backup. The DAG is not a lagged copy of the DB's either.

I will check the HP Data Protector setting, but I do not think that setting is valid or anything configurable.
Here is the contents of some various commands for one of my databases, all of which are configured identically, tell me if you see something set incorrectly. Hopefully I have redacted enough internal stuff:

  • DPM 2012 SP1 - Protecting Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2013 at the same time

    Hi,
From which Exchange Server am I commited to copy the ESEUTIL.exe and ESE.dll to the DPM Directory for protecting the whole Exchange databases from both products (2010 and 2013) ?
    Thanks for replies.
    Regards
    Phil

The visual c++ libraries actually need to be installed on the Exchange 2013 server.
To protect Exchange 2013 with DPM SP1, in addition to copying the ese.dll
and eseutil.exe files to the DPM
bin folder, you also need to install the
Visual C++ redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 1(vcredist) on your Exchange server. You can download it from
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/ details.aspx?id=30679
Installing vcredist on your Exchange server loads components of Visual C++ libraries. The Visual C++ libraries are needed when an application that was developed using Visual Studio 2012
is installed on a computer that does not have Visual Studio 2012 installed. Without Visual Studio 2012 or the Visual C++ libraries, you will run into errors trying to protect Exchange 2013.
Let us know if it works after doing this.
NOTE: The Exchange 2013 ese.dll and eseutil.exe files will cover Exchange 2010 also.

  • Creation of a second Exchange 2013 server on a different site (with the roles of MBX and CAS) fails on prepare active directory and prepare schema.

    Hello everyone
I have a network infrastructure  consisting of 3 sites, site A, site B, and site C. i have 2 domain controllers on every site, and the AD roles are on the primary domain controller on site A. On site A I have an Exchange 2013sp1 CU6.
I want to create a second Exchange on Site B, with the roles of mailbox (the exchange on Site A will be first DAG member and the Exchange on Site B will be the second member of the DAG) and CAS.
First question: Is my  thought correct about installaing on the same server mailbox and CAS server?
Second question: how many DAG witnesses I need for the DAG? One per site, or one in general (for example located on site A)
Third question: When I am trying to perform “Setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms”  I receive the error
“ Setup encountered a problem while validating the state of Active Directory:
The Active Directory schema version (15303) is higher than Setup's version (15292). Therefore, PrepareSchema can't be executed.  See the Exchange setup log for more information on this error. For more information, visit:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/library(EXCHG.150)/ms.exch.setupreadiness.AdInitErrorRule.aspx “
I tried  to run the PrepareSchema from  the ISO of Exchange 2013 SP1 and form the extracted content of Exchange 2013SP1 CU6 archive, but still receive the same error. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thank you for your answer,
    I have tried to run "Setup.exe /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms”  from
Exchange 2013 CU6 media, but I still receive  the error:
The Active Directory schema version (15303) is higher than Setup's version (15292). Therefore, PrepareSchema
can't be executed.  See the Exchange setup log for more information on this error. For more information, visit:http://technet.microsoft.com/library(EXCHG.150)/ms.exch.setupreadiness.AdInitErrorRule.aspx “
    any ideas?

  • Establish mail flow from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013

I am currently using Exchange 2007 into three sites in three cities and two of the sites are connected to Internet sending and receiving emails via Edge transport servers.
Now I am planning to upgrade to exchange 2013 CU1. I don't find any documentation on how to establish mail flow between Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2013. Will it be automatic or do i need to create specific connectors between them?

Was this question answered.  We're in the same situation now as we're upgrading to Exchange 2013 from 2007. The latest CU certainly helped.   Initially the test mailboxes on Exchange 2013 couldn't email each other - This was resolved with CU7 and
using "Custom Settings" - manually entered IPs for DNS in the Exchange  Admin Center "DNS Lookups".
Issue at the moment Test mailboxes on Exchange 2013 cannot email mailboxes on 2007 or visa-versa and mail from external sources queues on the 2007 box.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  • Users moved from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013 unable to access mails on the mobile devices

New mailbox if created on Exchange 2013 works fine. But moved users from Ex2k7 to EX2k13 do not works. Here are the errors on the exchange server 2013 IIS logs:
    For android --  DevOS:Android_S110_Error:System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException_ADWR
    For iphone --   DevOS:iOS+8.1.1+12B436_S110_Error:System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException_As
Exhange 2013 is on Cumulative update CU6
    Any clue.

    Hi,
have you tried to recreate activesync profile? For IOS devices you could try to reset Network setting by doing the following:
