Exchange 2013, multiple IIS OWA sites with different authentication

Hi
I have an exchange 2013 server with Client Access and Mailbox server installed. The server has an second ip address which I have bound an additional IIS site to. The additional IIS site is named ExchangeExternalFBA.
The default web site is configured for basic and windows authentication with:
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
Then a new ECP and OWA are configured with:
New-ecpVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA"
New-OwaVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA"
Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -LogonFormat FullDomain -FormsAuthentication:$true -WindowsAuthentication:$false -BasicAuthentication:$true
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -FormsAuthentication:$true
Then I perform an iisreset.
My problem is that then when I try to access the ECP or OWA on the default website, it loads forms authentication! The ECP or OWA on the ExchangeExternalFBA web site works correctly and also loads forms authentication.
If I run...
get-owavirtualdirectory "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
then it returns:
InternalAuthenticationMethods                       : {Basic, Ntlm,
                                                      WindowsIntegrated}
BasicAuthentication                                 : True
WindowsAuthentication                               : True
DigestAuthentication                                : False
FormsAuthentication                                 : False
LiveIdAuthentication                                : False
AdfsAuthentication                                  : False
OAuthAuthentication                                 : False
If I then run
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
and perform another iisreset then when I try to access the ECP or OWA on the default website it loads correctly. But then the forms based authentication on the ExchangeExternalFBA website can no longer log in, it does not accept the user name and password.
If I then disable and enable FBA on the ExchangeExternalFBA website then it works but forms based authentication takes over the default web site again!
Whether I perform the above from the gui or from powershell it does not make a difference, the same behaviour is observed. Changing the logontype on the FBA does not make a difference.
This has been tested on exchange 2013 cu1 and cu2.
Similar(if not identical until they get sidetracked) issue reported in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/exchange/en-US/9fcd360f-6658-4940-add7-2f13265cf86b/multiple-owa-sites-on-a-single-server-2012-with-exchange-2013-mailbox-cas.
This worked fine in outlook 2007 and 2010, why now do my virtual directories break each other?
I can reproduce the issue on a test exchange 2013 I built in dev.
Is this a bug or are you no longer meant to host different forms of authentication on a single cas?
I'm mostly interested to see if this works for other people and why it no longer seems to work in 2013, so please no questions; 'why do you want 2 different forms of authentication'.
Much appreciated, Thanks!

Based off of your feedback I have run the following:
Remove-OwaVirtualDirectory "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
Remove-EcpVirtualDirectory "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)"
iisreset
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (default web site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false
Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (Default Web Site)" -FormsAuthentication:$false -WindowsAuthentication:$true -BasicAuthentication:$true
New-ecpVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA" -Role ClientAccess
New-OwaVirtualDirectory -WebSiteName "ExchangeExternalFBA" -Role ClientAccess
Set-owavirtualdirectory -identity "owa (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -LogonFormat FullDomain -FormsAuthentication:$true -WindowsAuthentication:$false -BasicAuthentication:$true
Set-EcpVirtualDirectory -identity "ecp (ExchangeExternalFBA)" -FormsAuthentication:$true
iisreset
After this there has been no change in behaviour. After the iisreset, forms have again hijacked the default web site and re-setting the authentication on the default web site removes the forms but breaks the ability to sign in to the forms based page on the
ExchangeExternalFBA web site again.
Note. '-Role Frontend' did not work. It showed the error:
Cannot process argument transformation on parameter 'Role'. Cannot convertvalue "frontend" to type
"Microsoft.Exchange.Management.SystemConfigurationTasks.VirtualDirectoryRole".
Error: "Unable to match the identifier name frontend to a valid enumerator name.  Specify one of the following enumerator names and try again:

Running get-help New-OwaVirtualDirectory -detailed shows the correct usage would be '-Role ClientAccess'?
    -Role <ClientAccess | Mailbox>
The Role parameter specifies the configuration that should be used
when the virtual directory is created. The following are the values
that can be used with this parameter:
        * FrontEnd Configures the virtual directory for use on a Client Access
          server.
        * BackEnd Configures the virtual directory for use on a Mailbox server.

  • RPC error when configuring Exchange 2013 servers in 2nd site

Hello. I'm running into an error when trying to configure any of my Exchange 2013 servers in my 2nd AD site. To get into the loop of what my server structure looks like, please check below:
    Site 1 servers:
    DC1 - Domain Controller
    DC2 - Domain Controller
    CAS1 - CAS server
    CAS2 - CAS server
    MBX1 - Mailbox server
    MBX2 - Mailbox server
    MATHAFTMG - TMG server
    Site 2 servers:
    CCCDC1 - Domain Controller
    CCCDC2 - Domain Controller
    CCCCAS1 - CAS server
    CCCCAS2 - CAS server
    CCCMBX1 - MBX server
    CCCMBX2 - MBX server
    CCCTMG - TMG server
Currently I have a site-to-site vpn connection between site 1 and site 2 TMG servers via Internet connection; I can access the servers of the other site perfectly (whether I am in Site 1 or Site 2).
All user mailboxes are currently in Site 1 MBX servers; when users are in Site 2, they connect to the CAS servers in Site 1 to access their mailboxes.
Many users will stay permanently in Site 2, so it makes sense to have Exchange servers in Site 2 to provide faster access to mailboxes. I created the Site 2 domain controllers, and made sure AD replication is working; and it is. I then added the MBX servers
and CAS servers in Site 2 in this order: CCCMBX1, then CCCCAS1, then CCCMBX2, then CCCCAS2.
All Exchange servers in Site 2 installed beautifully. But then I tried to access the servers via ECP to proceed with the configuration. In ECP, I click on the server link, and all Exchange servers in both sites appear. If I try to configure the virtual directories
of Site 1 CAS servers, no problem. But when I try to configure virtual directories of Site 2 CAS servers, I get this error message:
The task wasn't able to connect to IIS on the server 'CCCCAS1.domain.com'. Make sure that the server exists and can be reached from this computer: The RPC server is unavailable.
The virtual directories issue is just an example. Same thing happens if I try to configure Outlook Anywhere for Site 2 CAS servers.
Users connect to Site 1 CAS servers via mail.domain.com. I have the A record mail.domain.com pointing to the IP address of CAS1 server, and another A record mail.domain.com pointing to the IP address of CAS2 server. Not the best load balancing going on here,
but it works great with Exchange 2013.
From mail.domain.com I can access OWA and ECP internally and externally; no problems there. From ECP I can access and configure any Site 1 Exchange 2013 servers.
The only problem is when I access ECP to configure the Site 2 Exchange 2013 servers, I get the same error message:
The task wasn't able to connect to IIS on the server '<server name>.domain.com'. Make sure that the server exists and can be reached from this computer: The RPC server is unavailable.
Even if I try to access a Site 2 Exchange 2013 server via https://localhost/ecp to configure it, it get the same error message.
I updated all Exchange 2013 servers in both sites to CU2 v2 and rebooted the servers in the proper order; problem still there.
Any clue what might the problem be?
    Thank you!

  • Second Exchange 2013 server in remote site

Just finished migrating from 2007 to 2013 and decommissioned 2007.  Exchange 2013 is running in site A with 350 mailboxes on it.  However, almost half of those users reside in site B so the plan is to introduce a second Exchange 2013 server to
this site and migrating mailboxes to it.  There already exists a DC & GC in both sites.
My question is, immediately after I introduce Exchange 2013 into site B with CAS & MBX role, client computers from that site will start to receive certificate errors.  Will updating the SCP on the new exchange server to point to the SCP on the exchange
server in site A be enough to mitigate that problem?  What other precautions will I need to take?  Has anybody been down this road?

    Hi
You can introduce the second exchange server in the remote site and also setup a DAG. If you are using the same name on your certificate like mail.domain.com then you can use the cert for your second server as well. You need to make sure you have autodiscover
    records setup correctly.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

  • Safari for Windows will not log into IIS sites with Windows Authentication

Safari for Windows will not log into IIS sites with Windows Authentication enabled. The IIS log has thousands of login attempts from Safari that result in 401 errors.
I disable Windows Authentication on IIS and it works fine. The problem with that is that my Windows clients stop working properly with seemless logins when I disable this.
The expected behavior is that Safari will work with basic authentication when NTLM does not work. That would result in a password prompt followed by a successful login instead of Safari stopping at "Loading" while hammering the IIS logs.
It does this on all machines that I have tried.
Any ideas or is this a bug?

I noticed that as well. I have to wonder if it's due to not making note of the the different end of line characters between Mac OS X and Windows in code.

  • In Exchange 2013 i cannot open mails with attachments greater than 19.6 MB in EWS or OWA

    Hello,
i have in Exchange 2013 CU3 on Windows 2012 the following problem :
When backup mails using EWS i get the message " EWS Error Code : ErrorMessageSizeExceeded." in mails with attachments greater than 20.137 KB ( 19.6 MB).
Then I checked all the settings of the EWS , but the defaults are already significantly higher than these 19.6 MB (Base64 approximately 26.5 MB)
    web.config ( maxAllowedContentLength = " 85000000 ").
Settings of the MaxSendSize and ReceiveSize are 300MB .
All requestfiltering settings in IIS are set to 85MB.
When i access via EMS or OWA , file attachments over 19.6 MB can not be opened .
However, the preview shows in OWA the correct mail including attachment and it can be saved from the preview up to the set maximum size.
By double clicking on an email in OWA bigger than 19.6 MB i get the following error message:
"Error : Your request can not be completed right now Please try again later . . "
Send and receive mail can also be up to maxsize .
When accessing via Outlook , this problem does not occur.
i hope anyone here can help me
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
To change the maximum message size for Outlook Web App clients, you need to change the value of
maxAllowedContentLength, maxRequestLength and both instances of
maxReceivedMessageSize by editing %ExchangeInstallPath%ClientAccess\Owa\web.config in notepad.
To change the maximum message size for Exchange Web Services clients, you need to change the value of
maxAllowedContentLength and all instances of maxReceivedMessageSize="67108864" in %ExchangeInstallPath%ClientAccess\exchweb\ews\web.config.
When you are finished, save and close the Web.config file. Also need to restart IIS by running the following command:
    IISReset /noforce

  • Exchange 2013 migration between AD sites

    Hello,
I am preparing a migration from one Exchange 2013 Cu6 server to another 2013 CU6 server in the same domain in a different  AD site. Each server is HT and MB server, hosting its own DB. There is no DAG between the 2 servers.
I am planning to use coexistence between the servers during the migration when I move mailboxes from one server to the other. The move should be transparent to the users. Outlook should detect the move and find it automatically.
I configured one namespace for all URLs, identical on both servers like "mail.organization.nl" for AS, OA, OWA, ECP and autodiscover.
Would this work? I read here it will: The article is referrning to a DAG spanned over 2 sites, which I do not have.

Mailbox Moves are pretty seamless, so not a concern.
As far as the CAS namespaces. How are you handling that ? Load balancing between the CAS? Round Robin DNS? Or are you going to cut everything over at once and change DNS to point to the new server? Are both CAS accessible from the internet?

  • Connect to Exchange 2013 on local network from a different domain on the same local network.

Hi we have domain a and domain b both on the same local networks using the same ip subnet.
domain a is Small Business server 2003
doimain b is Windows 2008 and Exchange 2013
How can I set this up so that client logging into domain a using Windows XP or Windows 7 can set up an exchange profile on Office 2010 to log into domain b running exchange 2013.  I need to know how to set up the autodiscover (i think) or how to enter
the server settings manually on the Outlook 2010 client (on domain a).  My understanding is that Outlook Anywhere means I can set up a profile "anywhere" even on the same local network segment as the exchange 2013 server.
    thanks

Let me explain the way i understood
    Domain A - domainA.mail.com
    Domain B - domainB.mail.com
To have common autodiscover record for the both the domain
Step 1: Create autodiscover record having the name of parent domain - e.g Autodiscover.mail.com
Step 2: Add this name in your Exchange certificate
Step 3: Create Host record for domainA.mail.com and domainB.mail.com
Step 4: Install IIS on a Windows server ensure you choose HTTP Redirection
    Step 5 :Create a folder C:\inetpub\wwwroot\autodiscover add a blank file called autodiscover.xml
Step 6: Create a new virtual directory called ‘autodiscover’.
Step 7: Select this new virtual directory > click on Content View > Right click on autodiscover.xml > Select ‘Switch to Features View’
Step 8: Double click on HTTP Redirect
Step 9: Change the HTTP Redirect settings to https://autodiscover.mail.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Step 9: Right click on Default Web Site > click on Edit Bindings - Add domainA.mail.com and domainb.mail.com in the http bindings
How it works: Autodiscover uses http redirection in which it get redirected to the respective domain to the autodiscover record

  • Exchange High availability between two sites with two servers

    Hi Team,
I have a requirement to deploy exchange server 2010 between two sites. but i have limited resources to full fill this. below the summary.
    2 servers in two sites
different subnets will user for two sites
    Need to deploy DAG.
please let me know the considerations for this deployment.
    Thank you

Hi - In this scenario, you would setup the following: Site 1: Exchange 2010 Multi-Role server File Share location to place File Share Witness for the DAG Site 2: Exchange 2010 Multi-Role server The above will give you 2 nodes in the primary location and
one node in the secondary location so that resources will stay in Site one. You will also need to enable DAC (Datacenter Activation Coordination) on the DAG so that the Cluster group can be managed by Exchange. Last but not least, you will want to restrict
automatic failover of resources to Site 2 by blocking that action on the Exchange server in Site 2 using 'Set-MailboxServer <servername> -DatabaseCopyAutoActivationPolicy Blocked' This will make you manually failover to site 2 and not end up with resources
there after a sudden failure or issue that is not impacting the entire site.Jason Apt Microsoft Certified Master | Exchange 2010

  • Moving 2nd Exchange 2013 server to another site

Hi there, looking for some insight into a task that has been assigned to me. We have two Exchange 2013 servers setup in a DAG environment. I've been asked to move the secondary to another site. If anyone has gone through this process, do you have any suggestions
    or tips
Off the top of my head
Maintenance mode enabled on secondary exchange server
    Shutdown VM
    Copy to External drive
Ship external drive to secondary site
Create VM and assign new IP
Ensure DNS name for secondary is pointing to the new IP
Boot and turn off Maintenance mode on secondary server
    Ensure DAG is replicating over
    Questions
Do I have do change anything to ensure exchange realizes it's now off site? The new IP that will be assigned is bound to our secondary site in AD. Example 10.333.333.*  = DR-SITE.
Anything I've missed in the steps brainstormed above?
Thank you to all who reply. I am somewhat green when it comes to Exchange but am trying my best to research.
    -TSGzz

I would probably take a different approach if possible:
Build new Exchange Server in New Site (making sure storage passes).
Configure Vdirs and add to dag
    Add Database Copies
Once database copies are seeded remove old server from the dag and retire it.
I like this method better, b\c you still keep some high availability while you are getting the second site together.  PLuS you don't end up not being able to prune you log files since replication would be so far behind once you stand up the server in
    the new site.
If you can't do that your steps look like they cover everything.

  • Exchange 2013 CAS functionality in coexistence with Exchange 2010 CAS

    Hi,
I am planning to migrate Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 for 15000 users. We have a pool of 6 CAS 2010 servers added in a single CAS array. So my question is if we introduce a new CAS 2013 server in same site then will it affect CAS traffic anyway ? If we
point our HLB to all CAS servers including CAS 2010 and CAS 2013 so will the CAS 2010 servers wil take traffic or is it only CAS 2013 servers who will take traffic. We will be putting same URLs in CAS 2013 same as CAS 2010. I have read lot of MS articles and
all say that CAS 2013 should be enabled for CAS traffic and it will proxy request to CAS 2010. But I am not sure if we will face any CAS traffic issue whenever we will introduce CAS 2013 servers in same site and traffic will be pointed to CAS 2010 and CAS
2013 both. Is it possible to add CAS 2013 in Exchange 2010 CAS array ? Please guide. Thanks in advance.

For mailbox that exist on Exchange 2010, EXCH2013 CAS will proxy the request to an Exchange 2010 Client Access servers that exists within the mailbox’s local site.
For mailboxes that exist on Exchange 2013, EXCH2013 CAS will proxy the request to the Exchange 2013 Mailbox server that is hosting the active copy of the user’s mailbox which will generate the Autodiscover response.
-->Is it possible to add CAS 2013 in Exchange 2010 CAS array ?
No. CAS Array is no longer exits in Exchange 2013. But concept of a single namespace for Outlook connectivity remains. Please check this and this. In
your case you dont need to worry as you have a HLB in place it will do the job
When a new exchange2013 is deployed Outlook Anywhere has been enabled on all Client Access servers within the infrastructure and the mail.contoso.com and autodiscover.contoso.com namespaces have been moved to resolve to Exchange 2013 Client Access server
infrastructure. In your case it is pointed to both as you have a load balancer in place but the same URL should be configured in exch2013
Make sure you have exchange2010-SP3  minimum as it is the prerequisite requirement for upgarding EXCh2010 to 2013.
Please check the exchange server deployment assistant
    tool for moving mailboxes
After moving a mailbox check the URLs. Configure autodiscover,EWS,OAB URLs on exchange2013. Please check this as
    well for checking URLs.
I hope you know MAPI/RPC (RPC over TCP) traffic is now replaced with RPC over HTTP/s instead in exch2013.
    Thanks

  • Exchange 2013 SP1 & Custom OWA Theme

On Friday of last week we updated from Exchange 2013 CU2 to Exchange 2013 SP1. Since updating our custom OWA theme no longer works. We configured it according to the following guide:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201700(v=exchg.150).aspx
The theme we customized was stored in the following location:
    \Client Access\OWA\version\Owa2\resources\themes\"title of our theme"
Themes no longer appear to be stored in this location and I am uncertain as to where they have moved and how to apply them. Has anyone else run into this issue?

    Hi,
Can we try to re-importing the theme again?

  • Exchange 2013 MBX in DAG along with Hyper-V and Failover Cluster

Hi Guys! I've tried to find out an answer of my question or some kind of solution, but with no luck that's why I am writing here. The case is as follows. I have two powerful server boxes and iSCSI storage and I have to design high availability
solution, which includes SCOM 2012, SC DPM 2012 and exchange 2013 (two CAS+HUB servers and two MBX servers).
Let me tell you how I plan to do that and you will correct me if proposed solution is wrong.
    1. On both hosts - add Hyper-V role.
    2. On both hosts - add failover clustering role.
    3. Create 2 VMs through failover cluster manager, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN, the first one VM for SCOM 2012 and the second one for SCDPM 2012. Both VMs will be added as failover resource.
    4. Create 4 VMs - 2 for CAS+HUB role and 2 for MBX role, VMs will be stored on a iSCSI LUN as well.
    5. Create a DAG within the two MBX servers.
In general, that's all. What I wonder is whether I can use failover clustering to acheive High Availability for 2 VMs and at the same time to create DAG between MBX-servers and NLB between CAS-servers?
Excuse me for this question, but I am not proficient in this matter.

    Hi,
As far as I know, it’s supported to create DAG for mailbox server installed in hyper-v server.
And since load balance has been changed for CAS 2013, it is more worth with DNS round robin instead of NLB. However, you can use NLB in Exchange 2013.
For more information, you can refer to the following article:

If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks,

  • Exchange 2013 EAC will not run with Exchange 2010 CAS\HT servers shut down.

    Hi Folks,
A little background - We have just migrated all our user mailboxes and public folders to Office 365 using a hybrid configuration. Now that the migration is essentially finished, I'd like to decommission our on-prem Exchange infrastructure and remove the
hybrid config. We are using dirsync with password sync to replicate our AD to the cloud.
I've read that even if you remove your hybrid configuration, it's a good idea to keep one on-prem Exchange server around so you can edit Exchange attribs (such as email addresses) in a supported manner, rather than using ASDI edit, etc.
To this end, I installed a single Exchange 2013 CA\MBX server. After installation, the EAC worked fine, and I was able to view our on-prem users, groups, etc. Last week, I shut down our two Exchange 2010 CAS\HT servers as a test to see if anything broke
prior to decommissioning them (these were the hybrid servers as well). After doing so, the Exchange 2013 EAC no longer works for some reason, and behaves in a very bizarre fashion. About once every 20 times or so, it will actually start and run. The other
times, it just has you enter your creds, then generates an HTTP 500 internal server error after entering them. It seems to make no difference if you attempt to access it by the fqdn, hostname, or localhost right on the box itself. Same behavior on Chrome or
    IE.
Today as a test, I started up one of the 2010 CAS servers and lo and behold, the 2013 EAC ran without difficulty again. Any idea why this might be so? Thanks for any help,
    Ian

    Hi,
From your description, I recommend you use the following URL to check if you can access EAC. I see it works for several people about this issue.
    https://<Exchange 2013 CAS FQDN>/ecp?ExchClientVer=15
