Exchange DB Recovery

Hi,
While discussing some of the points with folks we just got in to a topic of Exchange DB recovery.
If i am running a Exchange 2007/2010 and if my Disk drive where DB is resided is crashed completely and do not have any backup. Now i am left with only transaction logs and not even have edb file. In this case will i be able to recover my old data using
Transaction Log Files ?
I understand that new Blank DB can be created in new Drive if drive is crashed but my worry is for recovering the old mails.
I hope i wont be able to reply my old logs in newly created/black DB since sequence of log file is different.
Kindly share your experience/ thought on above case.
Note: Pls assume that no high availability or backup is in place, this we are thinking as last step of recovery.
Regards:Mahesh

Hi
What happens when the database file is lost? If we have all the log files still available it should be possible to retrieve all information. “everything is logged in the log files, even the creation of database files”
If you dismount the database, delete the database file “mailbox database.edb” or whatever name you have given the database and try to mount the database again, the following error is raised:”one of database file is missing.
Mounting this store will force the creation of an empty database. “When you click “Yes” a new mailbox will be created in the same location as the “old” database. This is a completely new database. Although it has the same name “mailbox database.edb”
as in the previous step, it has new signatures. Recovery of old log files will not result in information being replayed into the database because it is another database in this scenario. And remember, since all information is logged into the log file the creation
of this new database is also logged. Choose No, and then delete the checkpoint file E00.chk and try to mount the database again. No error message is raised and the database is mounted. Even better, when you log on to your test mailbox you will see that no
information is lost either. Therefore it starts to recover all information by replaying the available log files.  It starts with the oldest log file E0000000001.log which also contains the creation of the initial database file. All information in the
other log files is replayed into this database until it reaches the end of the last log file E00.log. The database is mounted and ready to use. When Exchange Server cannot find the database file but it does find the checkpoint file it will not replay
the log files. It starts at the end of the last log file E00.log and it will create a new database.

  • Exchange mailbox recovery from DPM

    Hi,
I am trying to use DPM 2012 for exchange 2010 mailbox backup and restore operations. My requirement is to make DPM call VSS hardware provider for taking the snapshots/recovery points. But it some how never uses the hardware provider and always prefer to
use system provided VSS provider. Any thoughts on why doesn't it chose Hardware Provider as it does in hyper-v backup? or Any tweaks which I can do to make DPM use hardware VSS provider?
Thanks in advance for your replies.
    Regards,
    Sunil

    Hi,
As Andy mentioned, DPM captures “express full” backups using the Exchange Server VSS writer and the DPM agent to identify which blocks have changed in the database, and send just the updated blocks or fragments. Also, transaction logs are continuously synchronized
to the DPM server, as often as every 15 minutes, between express full backups.
We can confirm it by Application Event log of the protected Exchange server, for example VSS writer event 2021,2027,961 and so on.

  • Exchange 2010 recovery after a failed service pack install

    Hi all,
I have a question on Exchange 2010 SP3 installation and hope someone can help.
If the installation for some reason failed, Microsoft's article said one can use "setup /m:recoverserver" to recover Exchange. My question is if Exchange 2010 is to be recovered on the SAME server, do I still need to reset the computer account
    in AD first?
    Thanks in advance.

If you do not recover the OS on the system, you needn't reset the computer account.  I'll caution you, though, that if you intend to re-install Exchange onto the same server without reloading the OS, you are running the risk of having the same problem
happen again.  For safety's sake, recover the OS and reset the computer account.
When we upgraded one of our servers to SP2, we had a failure in the install, and Exchange was effectively wiped from the system.  We had to do just what you are asking about - and we reloaded the servers, from the ground up.  It's been working
fine since then, including when we just upgraded from SP2 to SP3 (UR5, in case anyone wants to know).

  • Exchange server Recovery Mailbox

    Hi Guys,
I would like to ask if there's a log or any information that can check on the exchange server 2003 and exchange server 2007 if there's a restore mailbox occur on a particular exchange server 2003/2007? Is this can be audit? Let say for example how would I know if the admin guy perform any restore mailbox in a month? is there any log or auditing we can set so that we can track it?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
You could search your event log whose source is “NTbackup” and check the restore data. Per my knowledge, there is no audit option for this operation.
    Thanks,

3, how to do the hard recovery for this situation(No Restore.env )?

    Hi Eric,
From your description, I would like to clarify the following things:
    1. Before performing the restore process, we need to dismount the Exchange databases that we want to restore. If the database is still mounted, the restore process will fail. If the restore process doesn't succeed, Restore.env won't be generated.
    2. It is because the log files are healthy, you can run Eseutil/r and perform soft recovery.
    3. In your case, you can continue to perform the soft recovery.
For more information about hard recovery and soft recovery, here are some helpful threads for your reference.

I have an existing production environment with 3 Exchange 2010 servers in a DAG configuration working well.I would now like to verify the backups by restoring databases to a new Exchange 2010 server which I will only keep for a limited time. When installing Exchange 2010 I get "You must be member of the 'Organization Management' role group or 'Enterprise Admin' to continue"I assume this is because I need some specific permissions in Active Directory I don't normally have. • Is there any Exchange API support exporting .edb file to .pst file.

    Hi
I'm working on a feasibility study of Exchange single mailbox/item recovery for our product. I find that there are some third part software can extract items  from .edb file , and export specific items to .pst file. But there is not public
Exchange SDK about this functionality. So I want to know is there any special API  be provided for third part partener about this extract  .edb file?  if not, are there any another way to implement this functionality?

  • Mac calendar syncing problem with exchange server

Hi, I have been having problems syncing the calendar on my MacPro (late 2013, with OX Y Yosemite, even the earlier operating system) with my work calendar (exchange server). It keeps giving an exclamation mark and the error message is "There was an error attempting to send your changes to the exchange server.".
Mail syncing on Mac with the same exchange server is working perfectly.
I also have iPhone and iPad, and never had issues syncing calendar nor with Mails.
I have tried to create a separate log in profile on my mac and attempt to sync calendar, it makes no difference.
    Any advice?
    Thanks Shu

There are several ways of exchange server recovery.
Reset the computer account for the lost server.
Install the proper operating system and name the new server with the same name as the lost server. Recovery won't succeed if the server on which recovery is being performed doesn't
have the same name as the lost server.

  • Is there any trustworthy Exchange BKF repair tool?

I need to export some critical data (edb and log files) from the exchange bkf file but due to some networking problem, backup process got interrupted which made bkf file inaccessible. After searching a lot about this over Internet, I found that majority
of the people have advised to use any utility for that.
Can anyone suggest any efficient utility to export data from damaged exchange bkf file?

    Hi Tuckor,
You can try any of the following Exchange BKF Repair tools:
    http://www.stellarinfo.com/email-repair/exchange-bkf-repair.php
    http://www.taskmanagerfix.com/exchange-bkf-to-pst.html
    http://www.bkfrepairtool.org/exchange-bkf-recovery.html
    http://www.exchangebkfrepair.com/
PS: I have not used any of the above tools, while searching on Google, I found some of them. But I have used some other products of
Task Manager Fix and Stellar Phoenix and they did exactly what I needed. So, I think you can depend upon their other products as well but I would advise you to test  free version of every product first
to check if the particular tool is able to repair your corrupt Exchange BKF file or not. Chhose sensibly.

    HI Shubi,
Zahir have provided very good article to make clean shutdown your DB. Please try to run "eseutil /mk" swicth against check point file and see if any remain log files is not commited. In this case you can use "eseutil /r /e01" (Base file can be change) and
    try to recover it.

  • Have 10.4 recovery discs, but running on 10.5 and want to upgrade to 10.6?

    Hi all!
1st qn: I have a mid-07 MB that came with OSX 10.4. Then last December the HDD crashed and i sent it for repair. The technician installed 10.5 onto my MB but i wasn't allowed to exchange my recovery discs to the 10.5 ones. I was told that in the event i needed to do a restore, my OSX 10.5 would be restored back to a 10.4 since my discs are 10.4 ones.
My question is if i go for the $29 upgrade pack, is it alright? I will be getting a new set of installation+recovery discs?
I'm a relatively new Mac user and never did an OS upgrade before, i'm not sure if each OS has its own set of installation+recovery discs...
2nd qn: if my ext HDD is already mac-formatted on my 10.5, after i back-up and upgrade to 10.6, the ext HDD doesn't have to be reformatted again and i should see what i last saw inside the ext HDD as per the backup?

the technician only meant that if you bring your mac in for repairs to the apple store and THEY need to restore it they will put 10.4 back on it. that's just a policy, not a technical requirement. you yourself can do whatever you want and there is certainly no reason to ever put 10.4 back on your mac now.
My question is if i go for the $29 upgrade pack, is it alright?
oops, misread your first post. I would think it's not all right actually. 10.5 was put on your computer by mistake. you need to own a 10.5 install disk to run it legally.
I will be getting a new set of installation+recovery discs?
yes. it's just one installation disk. you only got two with the new computer because it includes ilife and didn't fit on one disk.
