Exchange, SCL ratings and Spam

We have been running an Exchange Edge Server for the last couple of years with the following SCL configuration under Content Filtering;
Delete = 9
Reject = 8
Quarantine = 7
In the last few months we have been seeing an increase of SPAM entering to the user's mailbox and after analysing the messages, on average have a PCL of 2 and an SCL of 4/5.
I am interested to know what the current best practice is out in the field with regards to SCL values under content filtering.
Thanks

Hi Lasse,
Thanks for your response and the clarification on SCL values.  SCLJunkThreshold is set to 4 as expected.
I have done some tweaking in particular to making the SCL value applied to our Transport Rules living on our Edge Server via http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691082.aspx. MSFT should make it the default priority :)
Seems to have done the trick as Content Filtering is now being applied prior to the Transport Rules.

  • Exchange Anti-Malware and Trend Micro

    Hellow,
I am finalizing an Exchange 2013 deployment and I have a question:
I have installed Trend Micro as the anti-virus solution for my exchange servers, but this is a file-level protection software, I guess it doesn't protect my Exchange, rather it protects only the windows server environment.
Should I enable the Exchange 2013 built-in anti-malware protection along with the trend micro? If it´s not recommended, which one should I choose to keep?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Vinicius,
I suggest enabling the Anti-Spam and Anti-Malware to protect the Exchange 2013 server.

  • IPhone and MS Exchange - What works and what doesn't?

Along with many other users, I have been struggling with the issue of getting email to work correctly with MS Exchange and the iPhone. Since I have been working with the iPhone since the day it came out, I thought I would post a few successes so others can get a definitive answer on what is actually working so far. Note, I have been testing this only with Exchange 2003 server and I understand that there are reported issues using Exchange 2007. More info here: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2152500,00.asp
    • Exchange works fine with the iPhone to send and receive email if the Exchange Server is setup to use IMAP email. This is the only way to get to the server natively from the iPhone. Remember, the server has to be available through the firewall or you may have to use the iPhone VPN service to get to the server. Ask your Admin for the correct settings. Many Admins lock down all common ports and the only way in is through the VPN.
    • No IMAP, no email? - Well, there are many other ways to get your email if the Admin is unwilling to setup IMAP on the Exchange Server. I won't go into all of them but here are a few ways to get your mail.
    - Synchronica Mobile Gateway - www.synchronica.com. They offer a 60-day free evaluation that now supports the iPhone. Essentially it gets your email using Outlook Web Access (OWA) and you access the mail through their service. I have used it and can confirm that it does work. A little slow, but works. Not sure what the cost will be when it free part ends.
    - Forward your email. Forward your exchange mail to another service. You can always have your exchange mail forwarded to a service such as Yahoo or Gmail and get the mail from there. Not the best scenario but once again, you are getting your email.
    - Use OWA from the iPhone browser. Not ideal, but it does work. Along with seeing you calendars and contacts.
    • Email is the only thing that works. There is no syncing with Exchange calendars or address books, other than using Apples iTunes syncing locally with your apps. Meaning you have to manually sync with the iPhone cable attached to your computer every time you sync. However I am able to view all my public folders and access the emails in them. The RSS feeds in Public folders work as well, however no calendar or address book public folders work.
    • Emails don't delete from Exchange when I delete using the iPhone. This is the most frustrating issue I have with the iPhone. Apparently when you delete a message on the iPhone it is only marked for deletion on the Exchange Server. This means that until the deleted message actually receives the IMAP command to purge all messages marked for deletion, the message continues to appear on your Outlook, Apple mail, Entourage or other mail client. So you end up having to delete it twice. This is a real pain when you get back to your desktop machine and you see all the messages you already deleted from your iPhone and you either have to delete them again or use the Purge command. Luckily the folks at freshlogicstudios.com have released a free command line app called Expunge that does the dirty work for you. Read about it here: http://blogs.freshlogicstudios.com/
Just run this little app on a PC and it will delete the messages marked for deletion for you, essentially making the iPhone work as it should. If you are using a PC you can have this app run in the background. If you are using a Mac like me, I have it running on one of our servers at work. I know not everyone has this luxury, but you could run it on a home PC or ask your IT person nicely if they have a machine it could run on. Not the best solution but definitely welcome until Apple fixes this annoying issue. One note, this app requires the .Net Framework to be installed on the PC. Get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD -AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en
    • The iPhone is not a business phone. I am so tired of hearing this. I travel frequently and use the iPhone for all my business email, scheduling and phone calls. I've used the Blackberry, the Treo and the Blackjack phones in the past and honestly don't understand the attraction. After using the iPhone for the last two months there is no way I could go back. In my opinion, the browser, the keyboard and general ease of use just blows these other phones away. With just a few added features this would be the ultimate business phone.
    Hope this helps somebody.
Come on Apple, please license Active Sync!!!

    Forgot to mention...
Setting up Exchange support of your iPhone. At first with iPhone software version 1.0, Apple didn't have the Exchange settings quite right. If you selected the Exchange mail setting, you were unable to see any of the Public Folders and your subfolders appeared within the Inbox on your desktop mail client. Many people would setup their account using the standard IMAP email setting on the iPhone which corrected this. Apple fixed this with the 1.0.1 update release. Now you can use the Exchange email setting and it works as it should.
Well, it doesn't work for me as it should. If I configure the account as an EXCHANGE account most messages don't download. Instead, I get the message "Loading message" if I try to open a message. Then it just sits with "Loading message" displayed forever. If I reconfigure the account as IMAP I don't have this problem.

  • How can I add songs from my internal library to my external backup library without losing ratings and comments?

Hi, I have some 30.000 Songs in my constantly growing internal library and another 25k in my external backup library. I noticed that I lost all my ratings when fusing my libraries the last time.
As ratings and comments are essential for my work as a radio dj: How can I fuse libraries or add songs from my internal to my external library and keep ratings and comments and: How can I make sure, iTunes adds ratings and comments from songs I still have in my internal library to the same songs (without ratings and comments) in my external library? Thanks a lot for your help!

I use http://decimus.net/Synk to keep my iMac's iTunes synchronized with the backup iTunes folder on an external disk.  Any changes I make are automatically synced to the backup.  You might find it useful.

  • How can I import playlists, ratings, and play counts from an old iTunes library into a new one?

After reading countless threads re: how to get the iTunes artwork screensaver to work, I decided to delete my iTunes library file and reimport all of music which resulted in fixing the iTunes artwork screensaver.  Unfortunately (and expectedly), my playlists, playcounts, and other information were lost with the creation of a new library.  Is there any way to import the playlists, ratings and play counts for my music from an old library file to my current one?  I realize this may be complex, but I'm up for the task.
    Thanks in advance,
    B

I can't begin to describe how frustrating the screensaver issue has been for me (and I suspect countless others, judging by the number of threads on the topic).
I took your advice, though, just to test it.  After backing up my current library.itl, I copied and pasted the old .itl file into its place.  As expected the playlists, play counts, etc were instantly restored.  And now the screensaver fails to work with the dreaded error 'No iTunes artwork found' which makes me think it IS an issue with the old library file.  The only work around I've seen so far is to rebuild the library (which I did).
I'm afraid I'm going to be forced into choosing either a working screen saver or all my itunes data.  Very frustrating indeed.
Here's a link to the 'definitive' fix for the screensaver, if you're interested.

  • How Can I Get My Ratings and Playlists to Mirror Across Multiple Accounts?

I'm sharing my music across two accounts on my Mac by placing my iTunes folder in the Shared folder, with an alias to that in each User's Music folder. It works fine, but the User of the other account would like the benefit of all my Playlists, and would especially like to have all My Ratings.
How can I get My Ratings and Playlists to mirror across multiple accounts? I would've thought simply importing the <iTunes Music Library.xml> file would do it, but since we're both using the same iTunes folder, we must already be using the same XML file, right?

The answer about where the ratings, etc. are stored is not an easy one, but the best I can figure is that it is a combination of the iTunes Music Library.xml, the iTunes Library file, and the com.apple.iTunes.plist. Apparently, the com.apple.iTunes.plist (in the under User/Library/Preferences) references the other two files. If you close iTunes, take the com.apple.iTunes.plist out of the user's Library/Preferences folder and then reopen iTunes, you will see that all the ratings, play counts, etc. (track information) will have disappeared. If you close iTunes, replace the com.apple.iTunes.plist, then reopen iTunes, the track information will be restored. The playlists, which are not part of the track information, seem to function independently of the com.apple.iTunes.plist, but if you share the whole iTunes folder across accounts, this should include the playlists. When I back up my iTunes library to another folder, I back up a copy of the current com.apple.iTunes.plist from my User/Library/Preference folder. I think that the way this works across multiple accounts is that the com.apple.iTunes.plist reads track information from the other files in the iTunes folder, because if you throw away the com.apple.iTunes.plist from one user account, it affects all the other user accounts sharing the same iTunes folder.

My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • Exchange 2013 SP1 and CUCM 9.1.2 - Exch not recognizing called extension

I think I'm almost there in getting Exchange 2013 SP1 UM working with CUCM 9.1.2...I've got two issues at the moment that I need a little help with.
    1) When I dial my VM pilot (6040) from a UM enabled extension it prompts to enter an extension. When I dial the same extension and let it ring to VM, Exchange picks up and says "the person you are trying to reach does not have a valid voice mail box
    on our system".
    2) This just started happening this afternoon, when I dial my VM pilot (6040) exch3 picks up as thats what I have my route pattern pointing to. If I enter the extension of a mailbox on exch2, I get stuck in a endless loop.
I've followed this post as a guide but it hasn't resolved my issue.
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11914031/exchange-2013-um-and-cucm-86
My Exchange environment looks like this:
    Site 1:
exch1 - CAS/Mailbox, used for mainly utility type work, journal, dedicated SMTP flows etc
    exch2 - CAS/Mailbox, part DAG13
    exch3 - CAS/Mailbox, part of DAG13
    Site 2:
    exch2dr - CAS/Mailbox, part of DAG13
    exch3dr - CAS/Mailbox, part of DAG13
DAG13 is stretched between two sites, there are no users at our DR site so CUCM is pointing to Site 1 for UM. Each site has an internet facing CAS-only server for OWA/EAS etc.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd love to get rid of Unity.
    EDIT:
I just found this event in the event logs:
The Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging service on the Mailbox server received a diverted call with ID "d51600-3a3140c5-9b8-c1414ac@EXCH3-IPADDR" for extension "4099" on UM dial plan "CUCM" from UM IP gateway "CUCM IP",
but no UM-enabled mailbox for the corresponding extension could be found. Please check the extension and make sure that the corresponding mailbox is enabled for UM and associated with the correct UM dial plan.

9.1.2 I think it is, we upgraded to avoid the known DNS bug
I cant see how to PM you either
The crux of it was outlined below with some tweaks
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2014/04/30/step-by-step-integration-between-exchange-2013-um-and-cisco-unified-communication-manager.aspx
As we have multiple combined role servers, our trunks are set up as follows:
    1. 1 x CAS Trunk - contains all CAS Servers on port 5060
    2. 4 x MBX Trunks - contains Maibox Server with ports 5062-5068
On top of that, we had to Allow "Redirecting Diversion Header Delivery - Inbound (and Outbound)" on the CAS Trunk but DISABLE it on the Mailbox Trunks
Also, make sure that you are using Telephone Extension Dial plans in Exchange 2013 (Despite them being unable to be associated with a 13 Server - EX13 answers for all calls anyway)
Lastly, the MS documentation is a little strange - it says that as your last step of UM migration, you should point your Call Manager to 2013 - I don't agree with that statement, EX13 routes calls back to 2010 UM Servers perfectly fine, so treat it the same
as any other CAS based service - point to 2013, and it will handle the rest

  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Windows 8 Compatibility

Is there a fix or workaround for accessing email via Outlook 2013 (Windows 8) when your company uses Microsoft exchange server 2003 and has not plans on upgrading it any time soon. I am a remote employee so I am the only one that has this problem in the
company. I can access email through an owa account but it's a pain. I tried to set up a rule to have all incoming mail forwarded to my gmail account in Outlook 2013, but that did not work. Any other ideas?

If server has enabled ActiveSync you can use Windows 8 Mail Client - works almost like Outlook.
AFAIR Outlook 2013 can't work with Exchange 2003.

  • How do I move iTunes to a new Mac without loosing my ratings and plays?

I don't have a new Mac yet, but before I buy one I'd like to know how to transfer my iTunes library.
I am really depending on my ratings and plays so I don't want to loose them.
So how should I do it? backup? home sharing?
And another question: I have my iTunes library on my external hd. Could I install the whole iTunes on the external hd and then use itunes on any Mac with the hd plugged in?

so just to get it right: you mean copy the iTunes folder to new Mac INSTEAD of installing iTunes there?
iTunes will be installed on your new Mac. there will be an iTunes folder existing there but it will be devoid of content (just the default files).
by replacing this default iTunes folder with the one from your old Mac, you are copying the +*heart & soul+* of your library to the new machine: the all important *iTunes library file*.
the iTunes library file contains info such as playlists, playcounts, ratings, etc.

  • What is Exchange Virtual directory and its role?

    Hello there,
I am new to Exchange and I started reading about Exchange Virtual directories. I am struggling to understand the concept behind Virtual directories in Exchange and what is the role of this component. Can someone please shed some light and better yet supplemental
information to help me understand the concepts behind it? Let me know please. I am looking forward to any reply that would help.
    Regards,
    Lotusmail1
    Franz Garcia

    Hi,
    Thank you for your question.
Exchange virtual directory is a directory which store some necessary URL to point to correspondent web page, those URL can provide service for user by Exchange server. it include the following component:
    On Exchange CAS server:
Autodiscover: An important function of the Autodiscover service is to provide access to features for clients that are connected to your messaging environment. These features include the web-based offline address book (OAB), the Availability service, and
Unified Messaging (UM). The Autodiscover service must be deployed and configured correctly for clients to automatically connect to features.
ECP: The Exchange Control Panel is a Web application that runs on a Client Access Server providing services for the Exchange organization. This Exchange Control Panel is installed automatically when you install a Client Access server. To manage Exchange
from just about anywhere, you simply need to enter the URL path for the application in your browser’s Address field. You can then access the Exchange Control Panel. By default, the Exchange Control Panel URL is
    https://yourserver.yourdomain.com/ecp.
EWS: Exchange Web Services virtual directories support the calendar sharing and other functionality offered by Exchange Web Services. The Exchange Web services included in Exchange provide an XML messaging interface that enables you to manage Exchange store
items and access Exchange server functionality from client applications.
Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync: Exchange ActiveSync is a client protocol that lets you synchronize a mobile device with your Exchange mailbox.
OAB: An offline address book (OAB) is a copy of an address list collection that’s been downloaded so a Microsoft Outlook user can access the address book while disconnected from the server. Microsoft Exchange generates the new OAB files and then compresses
the files and places them on a local share. You can decide which address lists are made available to users who work offline, and you can also configure the method by which the address books are distributed.
OWA: By default, when you install Microsoft Exchange 2013, you enable Outlook Web App. Microsoft Outlook Web App lets users access their Exchange mailbox from almost any Web browser. The Client Access server role provides proxy and redirection services for
    Outlook Web App.
PowerShell: The Exchange Management Shell, built on Windows PowerShell technology, provides a powerful command-line interface for Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 that enables automation of administrative tasks. With the Shell, you can manage every aspect
of Exchange. You can enable new email accounts, create Send and Receive connectors, configure database properties, manage distribution groups, and more. The Shell can perform every task that can be performed by the Exchange Administration Center (EAC) plus
things that can't be done in the EAC. In fact, when you do something in the EAC, it's the Shell that's doing the work behind the scenes
    On Exchange mailbox server:
PowerShell: this is the same with front CAS server.
