Exchange server 2013 CAS High Availability

Dear All,
Next weekend i need to build Exchange CAS 2013 HighAvailbility can somebody help me please.
we don't have any load balancers we may use windows NLB (or) is there any way to build without load balancers and Windows NLB.
If possible i need step by step guide deploying cas 2013 HA.How do i redirect users to different cas server i need to have this control if one fails.

There are a few options for load balancing.
DNS Round Robin is one of the way to go without any load balancing solution.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/05/load-balancing-in-exchange-2013.aspx
The article above talks about each option and their advantages and disadvantages.
To enable round robin for Windows Server
Click Start, click All Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click DNS.
Expand DNS, right-click the DNS server you want to configure, and then click Properties.
Click the Advanced tab, select Enable round robin and Enable netmask ordering, and then click OK.
Picked up from : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg398251.aspx
The link below is the way Microsoft has configured Load balancing and entire exchange architecture.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/04/21/the-preferred-architecture.aspx
Please be aware that, all the above needs careful planning before implementing. There are advantages as well as downsides to each of them.

    Dear All,
I'm planning to Deploying High Availability and Site Resilience.
I have two data center and I have one exchange server on each site (multi-role).
I want to deploy Database Availability Group.
    Is it possible? any idea?
in addition, all clients is connected to their email to their own site. dose it has any affected to Outlook users?

    Hi MAS,
Currently, I have only mailbox server and only database for each site.
+ Site1: I has DB1 and all users in site1 will access to their own site. (MBX1) subnet 192.168.1.0/24
+ Site2: I has DB2 and all users in site2 will access to their own site. (MBX2) subnet 192.168.2.0/24
But the email for incoming and outgoing with external will go to Site1.
    In Planning,
I want to implement DAG to provide HA on database level below:
Is it possible to do that? dose it has any affected to current Outlook users?

  • Deploying 2x Exchange Server 2013 CAS server email traffic high availability during patching & reboot

    Hi people,
What is the best way to utilize VMware technology to host 2x the Exchange Server 2013 CAS role VM in my production VM to ensure that the email traffic is not halted during server patching ?
Previously in Exchange Server 2007 I am using Windows NLB (IGMP Multicast) on my ESXi 4.1, now with ESXi 5.1 and 2013 I wonder if there is any better way to make sure that the server failover does not disrupt the mail flow between the Smarthost and the CAS server role.
    Thanks

    Hey AlbertWT,
Can you clarify exactly what you mean when you say "server patching?"  Do you mean patching at the ESXi host level or something within the guest?
As you probably know Exchange 2013 CAS no longer needs NLB or even a hardware load balancer.  Due to changes in the architecture, even simple DNS round robin is "enough" to load balance the CAS role.  NLB has its own set of headaches which you are probably all too familiar with so getting rid of that can help remove a lot of complexity from the situation.
If you can clarify what you mean by "server patching" and "server failover" in your post I think that would be helpful for me to give you a more definitive answer.

  • Exchange server 2013 CAS server high availability

    Hi
    I have exchange server 2010 sp3(2 MB, 2Hub/Cas) servers.
Planning to migrate to exchange server 2013.( 2 cas servers and 2 mbx servers).
I dont want to go all traffic single so i am keeping the role separate..
In exchange 2010 i achieved hub/CAS high availability through NLB.
In exchange 2013 how to acheive this...
Please share your suggestions with document if possible...

  • Exchange Server 2013 Mailbox - High CPU Usage

    Hi,
We are having an issue with our Exchange 2013 Mailbox Server.
The process Microsoft.Exchange.Store.Worker consumes most of the CPU utilization.
Have anyone encountered this issue? How were you able to resolve it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
According to your description, your database is not active. And to understand more about the issue, I’d like to confirm if there is some user experience slow connection or other performance issue.
However, since in Exchange 2013 single Store Worker Process is only responsible for one database, we can firstly confirm if the specific mailbox database causes the high CPU:

  • Exchange Server 2013 migration and high avalability

    Hello,
We are using Office 365 online and will be migrating onto an in-house Exchange Server 2013 on a new Windows Server box.
    I have two questions:
    1. What is the best way to migrate everything from the Office 365 to the in house server? Do I setup a hybrid environment and then move the mailboxes and then remove the hybrid environment?
    2. What is the best way to setup high availability for the in-house Exchange server? I found out that in order to setup Exchange 2013 as high availability it needs to run on Windows server 2012 STD or Windows server 2008 Enterprise.
Please let me know and provide links to step by step instructions if possible.
    Thank you, Karel
Thank you. Karel Grulich, MCSE, SBS

    Hi Karel,
    Thank you for your question.
In addition Ed’s suggestion, moving mailbox form Exchange online to Exchange on premise could be refer to the following link:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj906432(v=exchg.150).aspx
Exchange 2013 high availability could be referred by the following link:

  • Exchange Server 2013 POP3 Service on CAS cannot after Upgrade to SP1

Exchange Server 2013 POP3 Service on CAS cannot after Upgrade to SP1
When I manual start MSExchangepop3 Service on CAS It show "The Microsoft Exchange POP3 Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
    In event log show POP3 EventID 1018 , 1019 , 1036
It said like this blinding already use (0.0.0.0)
The point is "IF I SET BINDING FOR 995 , MSEXCHANGE POP3 Service will automatic stop"
Does anyone face this issue please?
    Thank you

You could check what (if anything) else is running on that port.
From a command prompt, type netstat -ano | find 995
This will give you the Process Identifier (PID) for the process that is running on port 995. Then you can open Task Manager, add PID as an additional column, and find out what that process is.
    Hope that helps.

  • Exchange Server 2013 architecture

    Hi
We are planning to migrate Exchange server 2010 to 2013 with DR.
Could anybody please tell me the recommended design for this..
I am planning to put two CAS Server, two mbx server in production site and one CAS server , one MBX server in DR site.
    Enabling DAC in DR site.
This design is ok or else i need to put all roles in two server in production and one in dr..
    Please advise...

Either option would leave you with at least one available server per role in the main site, except that with two servers, you would have two servers holding the role not affected by the failure of a given server.
    For example, you have CAS1, CAS2, MBX1, MBX2.
If MBX1 fails, you still have two CAS.
If CAS1 fails you still have two MBX.
What's generally more of a problem is quorum for the DAG cluster.
If you loose the main site, the database mailboxes cannot mount in the DR because they would not "have quorum".
This is adressed at the bottom of this article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd979799(v=exchg.150).aspx
This also addresses the notion of "quorum":
    http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/high-availability-recovery/exchange-2013-dag-dynamic-quorum-part1.html
You might address this (at a greater cost) with two DAG nodes in each site and with a FSW and alternate FSW.
Just a note: if you want all-around high availability, you would want to consider the CAS role as well (perhaps you have) which usually involves use of some form of load-balancing (or DNS round robin in a worse case scenario - not optimal).
Load-balancing between distant sites can be more of a challenge. If you have more questions, ask away.

  • Sizing IIS ARR for Exchange Server 2013

    Hi Everyone,..
I planned to publish Exchange 2013 through IIS ARR server, but I've had trouble finding any data on CPU / memory usage for a dedicated ARR server based on Microsoft recommendation. There are 8000 users that will be access from ARR server.
Hopefully you can help for sizing so
there isn't bottleneck on that server.
    Thanks

    Hi Irfan
The concurrent connections depends upon appConcurrentRequestLimit which has a default value of 5000. I think you need to increase this if  in your case the concurrent connections exceed 5000

  • Exchange Server 2013 SP1 Standard: Installation failing can't progress

I'm trying to install Exchange Server 2013 and I keep getting this error and I am unable to progress, I can't find any support on the issue and frankly I don't want to/can't afford to spend $500 to ask Microsoft for technical support (what kind of racket
    do they think they're running?).
    The error message:
    Error:
    The following error was generated when "$error.Clear();
    New-PushNotificationsVirtualDirectory -Role Mailbox -DomainController $RoleDomainController;
" was run: "The Active Directory object for virtual directory 'IIS://SVR02.OFFICE.local/W3SVC/24/ROOT/PushNotifications' on 'SVR02' could not be created. This might be because the object already exists in Active Directory. Remove the object from Active Directory, then re-create it.".
Yet, I see no PushNotifications virtual directory or anything remotely related to that on IIS or in the inetpub folders and files. If I try to resume the set-up after this error I get:
    Error:
    The following error was generated when "$error.Clear();
    New-PushNotificationsVirtualDirectory -Role Mailbox -DomainController $RoleDomainController;
" was run: "The AD configuration for virtual directory 'PushNotifications' already exists in 'CN=PushNotifications (Exchange Back End),CN=HTTP,CN=Protocols,CN=SVR02,CN=Servers,CN=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT),CN=Administrative Groups,CN=OFFICE,CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=OFFICE,DC=local', please remove this AD configuration manually.
    Parameter name: VirtualDirectoryName".
And I have to remove this config using ADSI Edit, which just returns me to the first error.

  • Exchange Server 2013 Logs Out of Control

I have a fairly new install of Exchange Server 2013 running in full production. Everything has been great except for the high level of log files that are generated on a daily basis. I am able to truncate the Transaction logs everyday with a Server Backup,
but that still does not help me with the other constantly growing log files in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\Logging. Is there any way to set these to automatically purge after a set amount of days? I have found resources that discuss setting
up a powershell script that will delete everything after a set amount of days, but I want to know if anything in Exchange 2013 will allow me to do this. I am getting tired of expanding my VM disk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately Exchange 2013 creates alot of log files that it does not clean up on it's own.  While there isn't a way to tell Exchange to clean up the files after X number of days, there is a very helpful script someone else has already written that does
the work for you. He has 2 versions, 1 that you have to put on each individual server (I like that one in case I lose the server I put the script on) or 1 that you can run on 1 server that takes care of all of your Exchange Servers.

From my painful experience today - I've just built an Exchange 2013 Enterprise box today.
I can say your router switch or whatever needs 3 holes:
Port 25, 443 and 444 - exchange should create all the firewall rules for you on install.
Be prepared for a bit of jiggery pokery with power shell, dns, and your cPanel.
Quite apart from all the BPA queries (100's of 'em) across three 2012R2 servers:
AD1 + AD2(backup)+Exch2013 - it really is pitiful that Microsoft haven't built an install routine that ALSO covers best practice configuration AT THE SAME TIME - each box needs to be run for 24 hours at least to ensure you've captured enough issues
to correctly set the boxes up to speak with one another.
Hope this helps a load of you - this is a good resource and the blanks can be filled in by a little further research.

    Cheers
    Simon
PS - I should also add - Ignore this and all other messages like. The resolution is far more adverse than the issue. Your exchange will come to a crunching halt. I feel a massive service pack coming on :-)
    Problem:
Application pool 'MSExchangeOWACalendarAppPool' is set to run as an administrator, as local system, or to 'Act as part of the operating system'.
    Impact:
The application pool can execute high-privileged code, including potentially malicious code that can negatively affect your server.
    Resolution:
Set the application pool to run as the application pool identity.

  • Exchange Server 2013 deployment on VMware Fault Tolerance

    Hi People,
Instead of using the DAG feature on the Exchange Server 2013, so what is the caveats in deploying the Exchange Server 2013 stand alone and then implementing the Vmware FT or at least HA to give the availability at the Hypervisor level ?

    Hey AlbertWT,
With Exchange 2010, try not to think of entire servers as being active or passive.  Instead, think of database copies as being active or passive.  Your Mailbox role virtual machine can contain both active and passive copies of databases within your DAG.
Think of a scenario where you have three virtual machines running the Exchange 2010 Mailbox role and you have a total of three databases.  You would have an active copy of each database and then presumably two passive copies as well.  That there is only one active database on a Mailbox server at a time, and if that server fails there are two other copies that can come online automatically.
In the case of vSphere HA, if you lose a host that's running a Mailbox server, that active database would automatically be brought up on one of the two surviving Mailbox servers. vSphere HA would then automatically restart that failed virtual machine on another host and you'd quickly be back to having three Exchange Mailbox servers online.
Does that help clarify things for you?

  • Implementing HA for On-Premise Exchange Server 2013 using Azure

    Hi!

Your answer is incorrect for my question. The link you gave is for a implementation of 2 datacenters using Azure as the wittness server, and that is not possible because you can make only 1 site-to-site VPN connection to Azure and having 2 datacenters you
    would need 2 of them.
But my scenario is different, I have 1 datacenter and I want to use Azure as my 2nd datacenter for Exchange and for my witness server. I suppose that using the only 1 site-to site VPN that Azure provides is enough for that situation, but, the question is....
Is there any issue with that scenario? Did anyone try it?
    Thanks
