Exchange sync causing iPhone to crash?

I've been using the 2.0 software since release date and it's been geat. I've had a random downloaded app or two crash, but that's about it. No problems with the main iPhone OS.
Just recently I pulled my iPhone (first gen) out of pocket only to see it stuck at a white apple icon on a black screen. Uh oh. Tried hard resetting it, and ended up getting the connect to iTunes message. Brought it back to my desk, and it told me it was in recovery mode.
I recovered and didn't do a restore from backup. I re-entered in my exchange information which went through fine, then tried to open my contacts, and BLAMMO, back to the apple icon again. I've since restored 7 more times or so, sometimes fresh, sometimes restoring from a backup, and every time it connects to exchange, my iPhone will reset again. It doesn't appear to be contact specific, mail specific, or any single function whatsoever. If I don't input my password, everything is fine. All functions on the iPhone work flawlessly. Then I'll get daring again, go into exchange, enter my password, and back to the logo it goes. Even tried disabling contacts, calendar, and mail sync prior to entering my exchange password and ran into the same problem.
Has anyone else seen this or something similar? I've dropped my iphone a few times but nothing that would make me flinch for it's safety, and all a long while ago. The screen is actually cracked because I knocked it off of an armrest onto stone tile and it fell just the right way ... but it's been like that for the better part of a year so I highly doubt that's the problem.
I brought the iPhone into an apple store and had a genius look at it. He couldn't tell me what was going on but since the iPhone is out of warranty, simply sending it in for troubleshooting on a hardware level would cost me, so I opted to hold out. Since this is a new software revision, he suggested waiting for the next update and seeing what happens. He didn't have an old iPhone I could test on so he let me try entering the information into a 3g phone and it didn't crash it so I don't think it's something incredibly special with what exchange is pushing to the phone, either that or the 3g isn't prone to the problem.
What I know:
Everything exchange worked fine for a week or two before this started happening.
I didn't make any configuration changes or do anything that might deserve note that could cause something like this.
It didn't happen on an iPhone 3g. Haven't tested on another first gen iPhone yet.
It happens every time i re-enable exchange and input my password. Even with contacts, calendar, and mail push all disabled and not opening any of the apps.
I have gmail configured on the phone which works fine.
There is absolutely no other problem with the phone or any of the software on it. It has been rock solid since the day I bought it ... prior to this issue I could count the number of times it's locked up on me (and simply required a reset, not a restore!) on one hand.
I don't know what to do. I live off of exchange now. I need my fix! Has anyone else encountered anything like this? I can wait for a software update and hope it fixes my problem but honestly, getting exchange working for me is so important that if this is somehow a problem unique to my phone it'll be worth shelling out $200 for a 3g. I'd like to avoid it though since I'm quite happy with my old iPhone and don't really need the new features which is why I haven't already shelled out for it!

I don't have very many contacts, and yes, I'm also seeing this problem even if I have contacts and calendar disabled.
This started happening the same day our IT team had a discussion regarding iPhone support and it was determined they did not want to support it ... from the gossip I could gather from the local IT head here there was an offhand comment of "yeah we can prevent that" but they certainly didn't prevent all exchange sync because other phones, both supported and unsupported continue to work.
I know there's a remote wipe feature for the iPhone through exchange, but don't know much else past that. Is it possible to have an automatic remote wipe upon first connection to exchange? I found this video:
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/iphone-20-remote-wipe-feature-in-exchange/5735 75531
I get the same screen the moment I connect to exchange. The only reason why I'm not sure if this really the cause is because I tested on a 3g phone and it worked fine, and I have no reason to believe the 3g is somehow impervious to remote wipe via some software glitch otherwise I think there would be a whole big blowup about it.
I'm going to have a hard time digging up further information from our internal support team ... I'm on hosting which reports to the same CIO and I don't want to get ratted out as doing unsupported stuff! I'm still digging though for more answers.
Are all of you impacted users connecting to WORK? Have any of your workplaces issued formal anti-iphone policies or at least confirmed they ARE or ARE NOT performing a remote wipe?

  • IPhone sync causes iTunes to crash every time!

Hi, I'm running itunes 9.0.1 on my iMac
    My iPhone is running 3.0.1
I can manually add podcasts/music etc... to my phone
howeer if i try to sync the entire iPhone iTunes instantly crashes..every single time.
I want/need to sync my iPhone before i update it to 3.1.2
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Did you try reinstalling iTunes?

  • Syncing my iPhone immediately crashes iTunes in Leopard

I installed Leopard last weekend, and before that I never had any problems syncing my iPhone. But now that I've installed it, whenever I connect my iPhone to its dock, iTunes gives me the spinning beach ball until I force quit out of it. It doesn't show up on the sources list or anything.
The weird thing is, when I first ran into this problem I tried syncing my iPhone many, many times, and some times it would start syncing successfully, but it would hang as it was transferring files, never finishing entirely. But for the vast majority of my attempts at syncing it crashes immediately.
    Things I've tried so far:
    1) Repaired permissions / repaired disk using Disk Utility. No result.
    2) Deleted the iTunes cache files (~/Libary/Caches/iTunes and /User/Caches/iTunes). This fixed a similar syncing issue in another discussion. After restarting, my iPhone synced successfully! But then the next time I tried syncying, after another restart, iTunes went back to its old behavior and crashed. The cache folders are still gone so I don't know why that only worked once.
Really hoping that someone can help me out here as I'm dying to listen to some new music in the car Thanks in advance.

I didn't think I would have an effect, so I didn't try it initially, but reinstalling iTunes has solved the issue! Case closed.

  • Camera causes Iphone to crash in colder weather

Now this is an odd one. My Iphone 3GS since latest firmware update has a weird "feature" When outside for a while and I try to take a photo , the whole thing just crashes and restarts for minutes. Thought at first it was happening only in really cold temperatures like -10 Celsius but last weekend was only around 0 Celsius and it was doing it again. Any idea what the cause and remedy are ?

  • IPod Sync Cause Computer To Crash

*I have recently got a new computer. I have uploaded all my music onto itunes and it plays fine. I plugged my iPod in and tried to sync my music. After about 2 minutes the computer froze and then switched the monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard off, whilst leaving the actual computer on. My iPod then just charged and only the first song in my libarby showed up. I have reset my iPod and also restored it and the same thing happened again. Is this my iPod crashing my computer or is the a problem with my computer?*

  • Update to iOS 5.1 causes iPhone to crash on "Restoring iPhone Firmware"

    Hello everyone.
I have been vry please with my iPhone 4 on Verizon for the last 6 months.  I was on iOS 5 which worked great.  Then this morning the AppStore icon had the familiar red circle indicating some apps had updates available.  I clicked Update All.  In there was an update for iOS5.1.  I clicked OK.
I gave me the usual License agreement etc… I clicked OK.
A few minutes later I looked at it and it showed a picture of a cable with an arrow towards an iTunes icon.  SO I plugged it to my computer and it launched iTunes.
iTunes tells me that my iPhone is in Recovery mode and I need to Restore.  Why is it in Recovery mode???  All I did was I clicked OK for software update!
I have no other choice but to click Restore.  It asks if I want to Restore and Update.  I click OK.
I downloads the software (25 minutes worth!!!) then goes through the motions.
    - Restoring iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone software
    - Verify iPhone Restore
    - Restoring iPhone firmware.
After it sits on that Restoring firmware with a striped bar for about 30 seconds, all of a sudden, a new window pops up and says "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored.  An unknown error occurred (1)."
iMac 2.4G 24inch .  OS 10.6.8  All my software is up to date as of this morning.  That includes the most recent iTunes.
Nothing else is plugged in the USB ports.
    I have restarted the computer.
No third party firmware.  No illegal mods.  No jailbreaking or anything, all on the up and up.
I have called Apple tech support but was put on hold for 30 minutes and finally had to go to work.
I have done a search on this and other boards but could not find a solution.  Would anyone have any suggestion?
    Thanks for any help.
    Bo

    UPDATE:
I tried about 6 or 7 times with no luck.  Maybe trying even more would have worked as Milis and some others have said.  But I ran out of patience.
So I called Apple tech support.  After a few minutes a woman answered, I explained the problem, she said that since it was out of warranty, it would cost $29 for a one time incident.  I said that since I did not initiate this problem I did not think I should have to pay for anything.  Then she put me on hold, and evidently sent me to the slow cue.  I waited for about 20 or so minutes and another woman answered.  She was very friendly and tried to be helpful but this was clearly out of her league so she transferred me to a specialist.  A very friendly british sounding woman came on and really wanted to get to the bottom of this.  She did a remote access to my computer so she could see the contents of the log files.  After a while, she determined that it could not be repaired.  She told me the phone had to be replaced.
So she filled out a request to that effect, gave me the location of the nearest Apple store and made an appointment for me.  I went there during lunch and they replaced my phone with a new (or new looking at least) unit.  They set it up and now everything is fine.  It is still on iOS5 but I really don't have any pressing need for iOS5.1 so, given this previous experience, I'm going to stay with 5 for a while.
Bottom line is that this was a real pain and huge waste of time.  But Apple support did come through without any trouble (apart from the waiting on hold) and got things fixed and working again.  The people I talked to did not have any idea of what might have caused this.  But one thing I was remember is this:  Usually I always do iOS updates through iTunes with the iPhone connected to the computer.  This was the first time that the update was started with the phone unconnected because it came about through the "Updates" panel of the phone's AppStore icon.  I'm not sure why this would cause the firmware update to go south but that is the only thing I can think of.
At the end of the day, I think I have to put that in the "You want cutting edge technology? well it's going to work most of the time but every now and then there will be the inevitable pothole" column.

  • Help!!! Exchange sync with Iphone YES  - with Ipad NO??

I am puzzled by this one, I have my echange account set up on my phone, it works no pb.
I used the *exact same settings for my Ipad*, cant make it work, I have tried and tried, anyone
i get this message but cant figure out why?
==> *Exchange Account Unable to Verify account information?*
how do I solve my problem, anyone has setup his iphone and Ipad emails on both??

I used the same settings on iPad as my iPhone and got repeatedly hung up on the "Verifying Account" screen. I then disabled Wi-Fi (used 3G) to go around all the wireless router certificates and stuff in the background and it went through the process and set me up.
If you have a Wi-Fi/3G model you might try this. As others have mentioned previously in this thread, there are no additional settings or changes required on the exchange server side and your iPhone settings should work fine.
    Good Luck!

  • Currupted "sent items" folder in Outlook 2007 (on Exchange 2007) causing Outlook to crash.

One user here has a problem when clicking on the "sent items" folder. Outlook hangs for 5 secondes and then crashes. If user logs into OWA, she can
access the "sent items" folder no problem. I thought it was a messege in the folder that was corrupted so I asked the user to move the messages to a temp folder from OWA. She did that, the folder is now empty but Outlook still crashes. Tried cache
    mode and uncache.
I tried to delete her sent item folder using MFCMAPI (in the hope the it will recreate a new folder) : right click the folder, selected delete folder, check the
option "hard deletion" and I get
    Warning:

One more test I did: I copied the sent items folder to a pst, moved the pst to my computer and when I try to open the folder from the PST, my Outlook would freeze
    and crash. Isn't interesting?
Am I missing something here? Has someone encounter this problem before? Any other idea on how it could be resolved?
This issue started on Exchange 2003. We are now moving to Exchange 2007. I moved her mailbox to the new server in the hope that any mailbox problem will be filtered
and removed. I still have the issue..

Windows Vista sp1, outlook 2007 (user was getting same issue under Win2k with Outlook 2003)

    Couple steps you may apply...
    1. Repair the offline file with a Microsoft utility called SCANOST.exe. I’ve seen this file reside in a number of different locations, mainly within Program
Files. It might be best to search for it with Windows or Google Desktop. SCANPST.exe will also work, though you’ll have to go digging for your outlook.ost, which should be near c:\Documents and Settings\ %profile%\ Local Settings\ Application Data\ Microsoft\
Outlook\ outlook.ost. If your file is significant in size, you’ll save a lot of time with the repair operation by not creating a backup. Because if the repair finishes successfully and Outlook still bombs, you’ll need to.
    2. Shutdown Outlook completely, including any runaway outlook.exe processes in the task manager. Open Mail in the Control Panel and before you delete your
profile completely, write down the server settings! There’s no need to worry about backing up your mail as it’s stored on the Exchange server. (Essentially, you’re deleting that outlook.ost when you drop your mail profile.) Now, start Outlook and it will create
a new profile, where you’ll configure the server with the information you wrote down previously.

  • Personal Hotspot causing Iphone to crash

    Hi Guys,
Using Iphone 4 with iOS 5.1.1 here
I've searched through the database as well as on google but couldn't find this issue anywhere else so I figured I'd post it here
There seems to be an isssue with my personal hotspot on iphone. In the past I could use either USB tethering or Wi-Fi sharing without any problem but recently I've noticed that whenever I turned on hot spot, and have other devices try to connect to it The connection would be established, but it seems like once the data starts transferring, Iphone would automatically shut itself down, or, rebooted itself rather.
The thing is I can still use USB tethering just fine. And this wi-fi hotspot crash problem never occurred to me before.
i tried restoring to factory, as well as network settings, none of which had worked.
    Anyone got any idea?

Have you pre-arranged with your mobile carrier for you to use "tethering" with your iPhone?  Many mobile carriers block such tethering until you sign up for that service and pay an exta monthly fee.
    Hope this helps

  • Syncing causes SystemUIServer to crash/reboot.

I thought I had this licked. Guess not.
Anyways, whenever syncing my iPod with iTunes 9 and Snow Leopard, I can usually only sync it once, maybe twice successfully before I have to shut down iTunes and reopen it. After the second sync finishes and the iPod begins to unmount, SystemUIServer crashes, menu bar icons reload, and the iPod mounts again. I cannot sync again or I get the message, "The required disk could not be found blah blah blah." This also sometimes seems to occur when syncing Address Book or iCal with Google, however, I'm not sure if that was a coincidence because the iPod was also plugged in then.
There is a crash log for it in console, but I'm not sure what exactly I should be looking for.
I just finished a clean install of Snow Leopard hoping it would cure the problem. It didn't.
    Anyone got any ideas?

Here's some of the errors Console gives me.

Also, just noticed, if I click the "Sync circle" in the menu bar after SystemUIServer crashes and the iPod remounts, the iPod will unmount, however, iTunes still gives me the "Required disk cannot be found" error. I don't know if those error messages will help at all, but they're there for your reading pleasure. :P

  • New iphone syncing problems, causing itunes to crash

I just purchased a verizon iphone yesterday and am in the process of setting up the phone to my liking.  Because of the verizon service the phone came with ios 4.2.8 which I have now upgraded to 4.2.10.  The sync process goes fine as long as i am only syncing apps, contacts, updating software, etc... The problem comes when i attempt to sync music, photos, and videos.  The sync will clear the first few steps of the process fine but will then cause itunes to essentially become unresponsive and crash.  At this point I am given a message saying windows is looking for a solution to the problem. no solution is found and the only option i am given is to close the program.  Unfortunately there is no specific error message given.  Everytime i open itunes again after the crash it will begin to sync again, slowly make a little bit more progress then crash again.  I also have an ipad and an ipod that both still sync sucessfully and do not cause itunes to crash, so im assuming the problem might be with the phone.  I have tried a full uninstall and reinstall of itunes, quicktimes, and other associated programs to no avail.  I have booted into recovery mode and completely started over with no luck.  Now im out of ideas on just what to do.  Any Thoughts?  I'm running windows 7 with the newest itunes and a verizon iphone with 4.2.10 fyi.
    Thanks

Ahhh man mine is the only discussion without any replies! Any help or suggestions welcome please!

  • Since upgrading to Lion iphone sync causes unrecoverable crash

Basically when trying to sync iPhone my entire system crashes/freezes requiring a hard reset.
I had previously posted an unresolved fault that was similar with Time Machine. I ended up resorting to buying a Firewire 800 drive instead of the USB one I was using and Time Machine is now working correctly.
HOWEVER, I cannot sync my iPhone 3G. The sync starts but the computer completely freezes. I have tried reinstalling iTunes 10.6 but this had no effect.
I have tried resetting the sync data as per http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1627 but this has not worked.
Bizzarrely I have been able to restore a previous iPhone backup but am unable to do a Sync.
USB devices seem to be OK excepting the HDD whcih i have abandoned.
I am pretty staggered that there are so many people experienceing problems after upgrading to Lion. This is a fairly new macbook pro i5 so it really shouldn't be an issue. Its clearly a software glitch but I have very little to go on. Nothing is written to Console before the crash so there is nothing much to go on there.
If anyone can suggest a remedy i;d be pleased to know.
Look forward to hearing form you

    Hi Steve,
I'm having a similar, if not exactly the same problem. I often download files from my Beyonwiz PVR, convert them to mpeg and DV files using MPEG Streamclip (with Quicktime MPEG playback component), then burn a disc with iDVD. Since upgrading to Lion, I notice that the audio in these files, and the burnt DVD in particular, can be slightly out-of-sync with the video. Although the effect is slight, it's completely unacceptable in my book - its like trying to watch something that been badly dubbed. I find it to be a very jarring effect to watch voices and intonation out of sync with the picture.
I'm not sure where the problem lies - is it Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip, and/or iDVD ?

I have continuously over the last 6 months struggled with syncing my iphone and ipod with itunes  The app continually crashes during the picture import.  AND by the way it takes 10-15 minutes before it even attempts to import photos.  The screen says importing photoes but doesnt try to optimize or anything for 10 minutes.  I have a 3gs with 16Gb so its not a cheap phone.  I have 10Gb free.  I have 6600 photoes.  This is very frustrating and undermines my confidence in your products.  My ipod is an ipod 4 with 16Gb also.  It does the exact same thing to it.  The last time, I had to import photoes a few at the time and with it taking 10-15 minutes each time for 6600 photos it is a long frustrating process.  But it will import every photo a few at a time.  The error message is just that itunes has stopped working.  no hint as to why. AND of course, my phone is out of use for the entire time.  You guys must not want to believe ur phones are a necessary tool...or maybe you dont want the consumer to believe it is.  I have tried to find solutions on your website as well as through other 3rd party communities.  Ultimately they were of no use.  I stumbled onto my solution by accident since Im a bit of a computer geek...a semi-geek.

I have this issue too, I went into my Windows event viewer. (should have looked at this a year ago when this started)

basically whenever I try to sync my ipod touch 4G 64GB it crashes iTunes when it begins the pictures. if im lucky ill get 4-5 on there before it stops responding. its not my system or anything im running win7x64 8GB DDR3 ram (Corsair XMS3) AMD FX Eight core processor.
It is silly that iTunes cannot add pictures to apple devices. it shatters whatever incline I may have to buy apple products. knda like the Airport Extreem router my dad bought the new firmware, caused my router to not function... why release firmware that breaks a product. -_- <-- off topic but still

    --One frustrated user

I have the same problem. I connect my iphone to my windows xp work laptop just to charge, not sync (Sync from macbook at home). I have been doing it for a month and no problems.
All of a sudden my computer won't even boot, just BSOD almost immediately, cannot load windows. I didn't think it was the phone but then I was using my coworkers laptop and put my iphone in to charge. When I gave it back to her, the next time she tried to boot she had the same problem as me.
Could the Iphone really cause such a massive failure?
These dells don't even have webcams.
    PLEASE HELP!
    Thanks

  • Syncing causes blue screen of death on XP Pro with ANY photo on iPhone

If I have any photos on my iPhone placing the phone in the cradle will cause XP to crash. Seen some old mentions of this online, but not here. I could not find any solutions. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would love to download my pictures, but I just have to delete them if I want to sync my music with my system.

One of your image accessories has an out-of-date driver, probably a Logitech or Lexmark scanner or webcam. Get the latest driver from the vendor's web site.
