Exchanging a new Mid 2010 mini for one Mid 2011

I bought mine in June and I was asking at an online store (OWC) about a processor upgrade for this mini and I was told that Apple could exchange it with one of the new ones just released.
In fact, the person I talked to, told me that people had been able to do it.
I just called Apple today (Sunday) and someone there told me to call on a week day so they can arrange the exchange or see if I qualify.
I paid 799 for the my mini including a ram upgrade so I think I can get the 2.5/4Gb/500Gb option that costs the same.
Has someone here be able to do an exchange of this kind?

I don't know why OceanDigital thinks it just the same mini without an optical drive, is adamant you should not upgrade or why it is bad to have two computers in one space ...
Please ignore what OceanDigital said. There is a significant increase in performance.
Here is a link with the test results from MacWorld about the speed differences between the previous and newer mini:
http://www.macworld.com/article/161306/2011/07/2011macminibenchmarks.html
A must read.
Going from a Core2Duo to a Core i5 or Core i7 is not an "insignificant" speed upgrade. It is a new architecture that at similar clock speeds can do certain tasks in half the speed.
As far as trading in / trading up. Some resellers do it. Apple will let you do it via their recycling page and give you a certain amount of $. Whether that sum is really worth it vs selling to a family member, keeping it in another room, ... is another topic.
Personally, I'd love to have the new mini - in the old form factor with optical drive, ideally - but it would be a significant improvement over our core 2 duo and core 2 quad systems from a couple years ago.

  • Which Microphone for New Mid 2011 Macbook Air 13"

Please recommend a few USB condensor microphones for voice/vocal recordings that is sure to work with the New Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
My 3.5mm to USB adapters that work on my 2009 Macbook Pro with Leopard OS, no longer works with Lion OS
Ill be using this with GarageBand, iMovie & Audacity. Previously I'd use my Azden SMX-10 with the adapter. (the Azden is also used with my Canon DSLR).
    Thanks in advance.

It is entirely possible, as many have known from day one (as ifixit's first teardown revealed). Unlike the unupgradeable memory, the SSD is a discrete expansion card that is removeable with just one screw, after removing the case cover. It is however debateable as to whether such an expansion is worth the possible risk of making demonstrable changes to the MBA whilst still under warranty. So you may want to stave off consideration for a while.
I made the upgrade recently on my older 2010 MBA, and it was easier than upgrading the HDD on my old MacBook Pro.
Here OWC/Mac Sales has kits and instruction videos.

  • I have a new (mid-2011 27" Imac with 2 Thunderbolt ports each driving one 27" Thunderbolt display. The 3 displays work perfectly in OSX Lion but in Bootcamp 4.0 with Windows 7 (64 bit) only 2 screens come up. everything is up to date. Anyonce who can help

I have a new (mid-2011 27" Imac with 2 Thunderbolt Ports each driving one 27" Thunderbolt display.
Graphic card is AMD Radeon HD 6970M  with 2Gb of VRAM.   All works 100% in Lion but
in Bootcamp 4.0 running windows 7 Professional (64 bit) Only 2 of the 3 screens work not all three.
Tried updates, calling Apple etc. But no luck.  Windows doesn't recognize the 3rd screen while
checking on the driver in windows is tells me it's the latest and best available. ?  In VMware
Windows 7 also works fine over three screens so windows can do it. But I need it natively to
work. (i.o.w. in Bootcamp). Does Anybody know how to solve this, or if Apple is working on a
solution for this ?  It really hurts to have one of these expensive screens staring at you being dead.

  • I have a new (mid) 2011 imac and want to transfer my old records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for a new mac that would have compatible software for ripping to itunes?

i have a mid 2011 i5 imac and i want to transfer my vinyl records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for my imac that has compatible software for transfer to itunes

    Hallo,
I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.
    Success, Jean

  • New (6.2010) Mini and Subwoofer

I purchased the new Mini to be my media server and replace an aging laptop that was standing in. HDMI was supposed to be the key for me.
Unfortunately, I can't get the Mini to pass sound to my subwoofer.
My setup is a Sony DN1000 receiver driving JBL mains, center, and 2 surrounds, with a Martin Logan 700 as my sub.
Any recommendations??? I've searched the forums, but nothing specific enough to this issue, although I did try a few things I read.
I purchased the mini yesterday and watched Hulu on it last night, that was great. But tonight after trying to get the audio portion of it (the primary reason for its purchase) I am starting to doubt that it was worth the $$$.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the Mac. I suspect that a setting is wrong somewhere (be it on the mac, or the receiver).
You have the Mac connected directly to the reciver and not through a TV right?
Did you check that your Sony receiver is set to DEC AUTO instead of DEC PCM?
Have you tried different surround modes on the receiver, to see if it has an impact? For example, switching to Pro-Logic, DTS Neo, or even Stereo.
When you use the audio/speaker test in the MIDI control panel/app, and you click on the sub button, do you hear anything from any of your speakers?
Also, while the Mac is playing sound (that is devoid of sub sound), explore all the receiver settings/menus. The menu options will frequently be different, depending on the input signal being received. So do this exploring while the problematic source is playing. Especially check in the speaker settings, bass management and surround settings.
Lastly, if none of this works out, try taking the Mac to the house of a friend/relative who has a digital surround receiver and see what happens there.

  • MAIL stops retrieving new email but only for one account

I have 14 different email accounts in MAIL, all IMAP.
worked well under 10.4 and iMac G5, got a new iMac with 10.6 a few months ago and have had problems with ONE email account since then.
It is my "primary" email account and every once in awhile Mail will stop retrieving messages from the server for that account only. I can view the messages via a webmail account but the MAIL account in question stays "online" but does not retrieve messages. Quit and relaunch MAIL and the messages are then retrieved. This only affects MAIL 4.2 in OS10.6 (any version I have had) iPhone is not affected or my olde MacBook.
All email accounts are for domains I control and not Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail etc.
    What could be causing this?

hmmm, I don't get the beachball. MAIL just checks all the accounts but for whatever random reason will not pull messages from one account.
Also- this has been doing this since I got the new iMac with 10.6, this is not a sudden onset.

  • Booting new (June 2010) Mini from external drives (USB2 vs 1394a)

I have a brand new mini and it doesn't seem to want to boot from the HDD I'm trying to migrate over from my old G4. The HDD is in a USB2 enclosure, and doesn't show as bootable in System Prefs->Startup disk. I'm considering getting a 1394a enclosure instead as I've read that is /definitely/ supported, but I've also read (on various forums, nothing official) that all Intel macs should be able to boot from USB2 external devices already.
The HDD has 10.4.x (I think .11) on it, and I really need to get that drive as the booted volume to recover some system preferences etc, rather than just have it mounted as a slave (it does mount fine).
So, before I go out and buy a 1394a enclosure, does anyone have any insight on this issue? Is the drive likely not booting the Mini because its in an USB2 enclosure, or is it because its an older OS, and wasn't formatted with GUID partition map?
I tried booting my wife's G4 laptop off the external USB2 enclosure and that didn't work either. I'm guessing the PPC needs 1394a to boot externally- I'm less stumped by that.
    Any knowledgable comments/thoughts appreciated.

Any insight on the booting issue (irrespective of OS)? If this drive were upgraded to 10.6, could the Mini boot from it via USB2, or is 1394a required?
At least historically it has not been the case as a hard and fast rule- you have often been able to boot macs with older OS versions, to a point. Of course hardware eventually has a minimum OS needed to boot it, so it is often the case indeed. Do you know if there is a list of the minimum OS level needed by hardware revision? That'd certainly be a handy thing to have available.

  • Can I use 2 external displays on new mid 2011 iMac?

I'm thinking of getting the new 27" iMac with the 2GB video card. It lists in the tech specs two thunderbolt ports and a mini display port, but the images only show the two thunderbolt ports, so I assume Apple is counting one of those as being the dedicated mini display port. I'd like to be able to use an additional two external displays with this iMac, though one extra would be fine. I see on the video card manufacturers website, they say it can "theoretically" drive 6 displays, depending on output ports. Is this like on the Mac Pro tower that can drive 6 displays (3 displays from each video port, assuming you have 2 video cards)? Can the iMac drive 3 displays (internal and two external) off it's video port with the proper adapters, i.e. dual link dvi adapter, or just one extra external monitor? I'd be satisfied with one extra display, but being able to add a 2nd would be a nice help in Photoshop since the iMac doesn't have the anti-glare option like on the laptops. I'd like to keep the second thunderbolt port open for the upcoming thunderbolt raid storage enclosures. Thanks all for any help and information!

Thank you, I have read that I could daisy chain the HD RAID enclosure on one of the thunderbolt ports with another monitor, if the monitor were at the end of the chain, but I do not know if the other port would still simultaneously support yet another external display at the same time.

  • I have several new mid-2011 21.5" imacs that kernel panic

The are running fully updated OS X 10.6.8, booting to a 64bit kernel.  All the available firmware updates for the graphics card and bluetooth have been done.  If I boot them into Safe Mode or into 32bit kernel mode, they do not panic.  That being said, I know it is possible it is a piece of software that could be causing the issue, but I wanted the crash log posted and looked at anyway - incase I am wrong.

  • Outlook 2010/multiple exchange accounts/new mail notification on one only

Hi, is there a way to have multiple exchange accounts in Outlook 2010 but just have new mail notifications on the first only?
I tried having the first exchange account open an additional user, but running into memory errors as a result. Found the solution to that by adding them as separate accounts, but this creates noise with mail notifications, reminders, etc-
    Thanks in advance - Joe

    Hi,
You can configure multiple Exchange accounts in Outlook 2010. For details on how to configure, you can refer to this article:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/outlook/archive/2009/08/25/multiple-exchange-accounts-in-outlook-2010.aspx
Also, only the default mail store will get the new mail icon. You can use rules to pop up a desktop notification for the other accounts but the icon will only appear
    for the default account.

  • Win 7 Activation in Boot Camp on Mid-2011 Mac Mini?

I bought my wife a new Mid-2011 Mac Mini (2.3 GHz) to replace her older 1.66 GHz Mac Mini. After running all the Apple updates and getting the new Lion Mini set up the way she likes, I downloaded Windows Support software, ran Windows Easy Transfer on the old Mac Mini Win 7, and then ran Boot Camp on the new Lion Mini in preparation to installing Windows 7.
Then I installed Win 7, installed all the Windows updates and had a perfectly fine installation of Windows 7 running. Until I tried to activate Win 7 online. I got the message that I had entered an invalid Product Key. So I entered the Product Key again, but I kept getting the message that the Product Key wasn't correct and that I needed to buy another one.
This stunned me, as I had used the same product key to install Win 7 on my wife's old Mac Mini, which is now out of service. After Googling around for hints, I discovered something that I had missed: In Boot Camp 4.01 in Lion 10.7, a full-install retail version of Win 7 is needed. Aha! I had used the Upgrade version of Win 7 (Family Pack) I bought in late 2009 from Microsoft (I have 3 valid full-install Win XP and Vista licenses). I used the MS-approved double-install method to install Win 7 on the new Mac Mini to avoid the install-then-upgrade waste of time, not even knowing I couldn't install XP or Vista in a Boot Camp 4.01 partition.
I actually have two Win 7 Family Packs, bought in late-2009, and I have 6 valid full-install XP and Vista licenses/discs. Only 4 of those Win 7 installs were actively being used until yesterday, although all 6 have been activated in the past.
So here are my questions: Is the Lion Boot Camp 4.01 requirement of a full-install Win 7 disk causing the activation problem, or do I need to call Microsoft for a manual activation? Will Microsoft refuse to activate a copy of Win 7 Upgrade on my brand-new Lion Mac Mini even if I can provide proof of legal Product Keys?
Thanks for any help, insight, tips. What a complicated mess progress can be!

Solved the problem by using the Windows automated activation via phone. It took me several tries before I gave the right answer about how many computers had been activated with that particular Windows 7 Upgrade family pack Product Key. The magic answer was/is "one", even though I know for a fact that two computers in my household were actively using that Product Key. Go figure.
Anyway, the good news is that you *can* use a Windows 7 Upgrade disk to install Win 7 in Boot Camp 4.01 in Lion on a mid-2011 Mac Mini, despite what Apple says. I'm going to guess that Apple is trying to steer its customers away from just the sort of thing I've gone through. Further good news is that Microsoft doesn't care about the Mac side of the equation at all, just that you can satisfy their phonebot with the right answers. :^)
Thank God Apple not only doesn't use activation for its OS, but also in fact is headed willy nilly in the opposite direction with Lion.

  • Need Advice: New Intel Mac Mini Still In The Box

    Hi!
Okay.. I know... I have several posts going here as I have several issues I am trying to solve rather simultaneously. Thanks for being patient with me.
I have my old 1.25 Ghz PowerPC Mac Mini running 10.4.11 and all was well and happy. Then Security Update 2007-009 happened and all went to ....well... you know and, yes, it was bad! Went to Apple, got it running of sorts as they re-installed the OS, but they used an old version of OS X. (10.4.7. Can you believe that?) This caused other problems. It continues to have all sorts of difficulties, as I have had to get applications to re-recognize that the computer is back up to 10.4.11. Currently, I am struggling with trying to get iTunes to access it's music folders on the external hard drives. Realized that I hadn't even gotten around to figuring out whether or not some of my other applications work, like some of the games and third party, etc.
The thing is I got a new Intel Mac Mini for Christmas and it's still in the box because as I suspected I need to get my old mac perfect again before I can even think about migrating stuff over to the new Mac. But.. here's the thing... it's starting to look pretty much like 2008 will come and go before I can get the old Mac ready enough to take the new Mac out of the box. This really is rather silly!
Now... I can't get the old Mac to see the music and it made me think. I have all of my iTunes music and iPhoto backed up on an external hard drive (I used Apple's "Back-up" software to do it) and in addition to this two complete copies of the iTunes music and iPhoto photos albums on two separate external hard drives. Should I just forget using migration assistant? Can I get my music and my photo albums into the new mac directly from the external hard drives?
Or...can I use "back up" to restore the music and photos into the new Mac?
I am starting to think that the best way to get my new Mac running is not risk it by attaching it to my old Mac. What do you think?
Thank you so much for any advice or experiences you can give. -Charlotte

I know that I am vacillating back and forth as to what to do. Thanks so much for being patient with me. All of your advice is really appreciated and I am at least closing in on deciding on my strategy. Probably will follow your first response advice, especially considering that some of the third party apps may not have updates to handle Leopard quite yet. Anyway... it's a good strategy since everything is on the externals anyway.
    You can say that fine.
Ha ha ha.... yes, I've been messing around with computers since my parents bought our first Apple computer back in 1979. Just like you, I've never had a serious problem with any of the computers and we've had them all, running all sorts of things from the Original Apple and Apple IIc (which my parents still have and it still runs!) to the Commodore and all the Windows permeations and then on to the Macs running Jaguar, Panther and Tiger, probably because we've always been careful with the machines and what we install in them and how we update them. I have always kept my computers on UPS' and un-plug them when storms brew outside. As it is I am still using my eight year old Windows 98 computer, (for games mostly) and it still runs quicker than most peoples windows pcs and it's only a 740 Megahertz.
I haven't had to re-install anything, especially on this lovely little Mac Mini until now and wouldn't have in this situation, had I known more. I had taken the little Mac Mini in for a Procare "Tune-Up," only four days before the big up-date disaster. Not sure what they did to my mac in the tune-up but the guy gave me back the machine assuring me that the computer was perfect with no problems in answer to my asking "were they sure?" Even after the Genius Bar techs at the Apple Store re-installed the OS to fix the big problems it seems that no one ever thought to run verify disk. Had the Genius Bar techs at the time of the tune-up done this, or at least told me to do this, the last security update would not have wrecked so much havoc. It was only after I got the machine back from Apple that second time that I found that the directory had been corrupted when I ran disk verify. Actually it is amazing that I have had this little Mac Mini for so long and so not have had any problems on it that I would be able to go so long without having to know this really pretty important aspect of keeping one's mac in good running shape. I had been running maintenance scripts and permissions verify and repair and thought that was all there was to it. Silly! You know... that really is a testimony of how nice these little machines are.
Anyway... experience is a good teacher and I have learned so much it's actually been great! This stuff is pretty interesting.
    Now... on to Leopard!
Thanks so much and you have a great New Year! -Charlotte

  • Dual boot OS X 10.10 plus OS X 10.6.8 on new 2014 Mac Mini?

    Hi,
I am currently thinking about buying a 2014 Mac Mini. As I still need to use some very expensive (albeit old) software, I would like to run a copy of OS X 10.6.8 (strapped for cash).
I currently own a 2011 MacBook Pro 17" and I have partitioned the disk and run OS X 10.9.5 on 700GB and OS X 10.6.8 on 50GB. This has worked great for the past 2 years. I simply press ‘alt’ on booting and select my OS depending on which software I need to run.
My question is, can I do the same with a new 2014 Mac Mini using one of my Time Machine back-ups (install from Time Machine option on istall)?
I would be very grateful to anyone who can offer me some advice.
    Many thanks,

    John Lockwood wrote:
Other than running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Server in a virtual machine as previously suggested your next best option is to consider buying a secondhand older Mac that is capable of running 10.6.8.
Just to make it clearer, 'ordinary' 10.6.8 is not allowed due to Apple's license terms to be run in a virtual machine only the 'server' version is. The server version of 10.6.8 can run normal applications and you do not have to use the server bits itself. If you try installing the 'ordinary' 10.6.8 in to a virtual machine it will not work as they check for this.
The new 2014 Mac mini will not run 10.9.5 either, the 'oldest' version the 2014 model will run is 10.10, it will of course also run 10.10.1.
    1)     Older Macs are just that: older and out of warranty.  So of course the user is subject to the risk of hardware failure without necessarily much warning and little or no recourse (other than purchasing another older Mac) when the hardware does fail.  This may also be a different problem for the OP, as cost appears to be a major consideration here.
    2)     The use of Snow Leopard Server in Parallels will cost about $99 retail (less, if some shopping for "discounts" on Parallels is done on the internet).
Installing Snow Leopard Server into Parallels for DUMMIES:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=17285039&postcount=564
    3)     It was a common myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion and thereafter on a Mac.  That myth has been debunked in the 3-1/2 years since Lion was first released and repeating it now does not make anything "clearer" but only tends to confuse an OP.
In any event whatever remains of that long forgotten debate is now mostly moot since Apple reduced the sales price of Snow Leopard Server by 95% (by telephone orders only; 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A); that is, for the same $20 as it sells Snow Leopard client and it is much easier to install, use and maintain Snow Leopard Server in virtualization, including Parallels.

  • Official news on a fix for those of us with issues with ios4 and 3g?

Hello all I'm new here on the forums waves
I have recently upgraded to iOS4 on my 3g and am one of the unfortunate to experience a downgrade in performance and major increase in heat(very concerned about the heat issue).
I have noticed a lot of people around different forums venting about this issue which is very understandable but...What I want to know is, does anyone know or have any official info on weather apple are releasing a fix for these problems? I know that the 3G is now been discontinued but surely they need to do something about this?
    Thanks

Hey all thanks for the replies
Sorry wasn’t trying to get people to speculate more trying to get some official facts in the hope someone had seen some sort of news from apple.
I really hope they care, I am thinking of getting me a Mac but if they are like this with "old product"...I mean I know it’s a very old product and they are concentrating on newer products, but I for one can't upgrade for the foreseeable future and I’m sure many other are in the same boat it would be nice to know they still care about keeping us out dated owners happy just for a little longer until we can all upgrade! =(
I did try the rest thing and I think it may of help the problems slightly...still getting extremely hot with basic things though...
    Thanks again for the replies
