Exchanging ID files between versions and platforms

I use IDCS on a Mac OS 10.3. The need has arisen to regularly work on a magazine with a PC only user, for whom I must advise software. If he purchases IDCS3 for Windows he will bw able to read my files, but will he be able to save for CS so I can deal with his? I do not think Interchange files will open on CS. Should I upgrade to CS2 to read his CS3 output, or could he get an old copy of CS2 for Win and I upgrade to CS2? I have been told CS2 and CS3 are incompatible if not on same platform; is this true?
Any guidance gratefully received!
Rus

Russell,
I'm the one who asked about compatibility. :)
The only cross-platform issues I've seen have been the use of Macintosh-format fonts, which can't be used on PC, and occasionally (twice, I think, in all the years I've been working with ID) a placed graphic in a file originating on a Mac that would crash when the file was opened on PC, and that was solved by sending .inx.
You are correct that .inx is not going to work at all except between two consecutive versions, and it isn't a good way to do collaboration in any case. You should both be using the same version, and the same fonts, either OpenType which is completely cross-platform, or PC, preferably PC TrueType which also can be installed in Mac OS X, or if necessary as a last resort PC Type 1 can be installed in the private Adobe font folders and used in the Adobe applications.
If all you need it the ability to edit the stories, take a look at InCopy, but I think ultimately you should be thinking along the lines of buying CS3. There are enough productivity enhancements and new features to make it worthwhile in most cases even without a collaborative need. I think you'll need to upgrade the OS, too, though to run it.

  • Printing Behavior Between Versions And Platforms

We have received some feedback regarding printing behavior between MAC OS and Windows. The application in question is Adobe line of products, mainly PhotoShop CS 4 and CS 5.
The scenario is as follows: Customer has mixed platform environment with Adobe Suites installed i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator and so on. Our MFP has entering of credentials before printing enabled for auditing and controlling purposes. On the computer side (Printer Driver), we have configured toprompt the user for their User Credentials at all times. The reason for doing so is because the computers are in a public environment hence we would like to know who is printing and how much.
The first problem is this: In Adobe Illustrator on Microsoft Windows, when the user selects to print, they are immediately presented with the printer dialouge box to enter their respective credentials to continue printing, but in MAC OS, this is not the case. On the MAC OS, the user has to select an additional button, "Printer...", then select "Print" again before being prompted to enter their credentials.
Customer is puzzled as to why in Windows Adobe Illustrator, the number of steps required to print is lesser then in MAC OS Adobe Illustrator. Customer feels that there is inconsistancy in terms of behavior between the Mac and Windows platform.
Secondly, in Photoshop CS 4, the same symptoms occurs as above, however, in CS 5, it is worse. In PS CS 5, after the user enters their credentials, the next time they reopen and create a new docucment, they no longer need to enter their credentials again as it is already "Saved" for them. This defeats the purpose of setting the printer to always prompt for user credentials when they print.
I have taken this case up to the respective vendor thinking that it is a printer driver issue. However their reply came back stating that this is a specification of Adobe and Mac.
Does anyone has any ideas about this?

    >> On the MAC OS, the user has to select an additional button, "Printer...", then select "Print" again before being prompted to enter their credentials.
That sounds like your printer drivers are inconsistent on different code paths (carbon and cocoa), and saving the credentials in the print ticket instead of using them as one time authentication.  Yes, it could be that they are implementing the driver according to Apple guidelines (which just don't match what you want), or it could be a bug in the way they implement authentication in the driver.  This has little or nothing to do with the applications, which just query the driver for it's capabilities, then send data to the driver for printing.  Using different applications just exercises slightly different code paths in the driver.

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system?

Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system? When I try to connect from my iMac I get a window that says "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported." Is there a work-around to this problem or is it just not possible? It would be largly appriciated for a solutin beings my business is a small town newspaper, and we have some important files on the older computer that need to be acessed daily.

Actually to share files between OS 8-9 and OS X, all versions, is quite easy from what I read. Look here for some details.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20003464-263.html
    And here.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9.x&oq=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9 .x&aqs=chrome..69i57.20706j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Or since both OS 9 and OS X can do SMB Windows sharing you could use that protocol to share files from one to the other.
Doesn't really matter what OS you are using. Mac OS/OS X shar files with Windows computers of all types and versions of Windows so the same applies for the different versions of Mac OS/OS X.
Each Operating System takes care of reading and writing files to there respective file formats of the hard drives so that does not have to be the same. They both just have to be able to do Ethernet with the same files sharing protocol.

  • Sharing linked files between mac and pc

    Dear Community and AI Support,
My team is trying to share AI files between Macs and PCs.  That works fine until we have Linked assets.  Once we have linked assets, AI either forgets to, or is unable to, let us relink more than one of the linked files.  We can't edit the links or even delete them.  The linked files are just ignored, leaving the file half empty.
We've tried hacking the paths directly in the .AI file, hoping to eventually write a perl script to help us switch back and forth. but no luck.  We assume there is a checksum or crc code or hash, etc..., as AI won't even try to open the file after that.
But to clarify the issue. here is an example of the Mac and PC links we need to switch between using an excerpt from the AI file.  These are valid, working directories on both platforms.

ooohhhhh very interesting.  I did a find and replace on all the strings, but no dice.  I didn't think to look at those types of data.  But now that you have mentioned it, perhaps I'll do a diff on the same file saved on both platforms to see what has been changed.  Should have already thought of it, but your note has made me check my assumptions.

    Hi,

Currently exchange rate difference is accounting under capital work in progress(Asset)instead of exchange fluctuation.

    Hi,
At MIRO stage, after entering PO number system will automatically populate the GRN value for selection. Here if you found that invoice value, which you have received from the vendor, is more than the system proposed amount, then you can adjust that diff amount in the GL account tab, which is next to PO reference tab in MIRO.
There enter the exch loss GL account and enter the diff amount.

  • Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
    - Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
    - Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
    - Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
    - Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.
    The shared folder is here:
Macintosh HD > Users > Shared

  • How to share files between pc and mac via external hard drive

how can i share my files(mp3,mp4,documents) from my harddisk with mac. i am a new mac user and i have a harddisk of NTFS format(as i was a pc user).I learned that mac supports FAT32 format and therefore i can't write data on my external hard drive.
but, reading a section of OSX yosemite(under compatibility) it is said that now we can easily share files between pc and mac.
So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in future

You can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows in same iMac with boot camp

    Hello,
I am new in using Mac and recently I buy a IMac 24" model.
I used to use PC a long time with a lot of old document.
I want to install Windows XP with boot camp.
But I also want to share my documents, music, video files between Mac and Windows in same iMac.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Hi Eric and welcome to Discussions and the Apple world.
Mac OSX can read and write from Windows partitions (like the BootCamp Windows partition you are about to create) when using FAT32 as file system for Windows.
However with FAT32 you are limited to a partition size of 32GB.
Mac OSX can also read from Windows partitions that uses the NTFS file system, but it can not write to them unless you use a third-party helper like either Paragons NTFS for Mac http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ or NTFS-3G http://www.ntfs-3g.org/
Windows can not even see or use a Mac OSX partition without additional help by MacDrive http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/

  • How do I sync a PDF file between iPhone and iPad in iBooks?

How do I sync a PDF file between iPhone and iPad in iBooks?

If the PDF supports it then you can try opening the PDF in iBooks on your phone and use the 'share' icon (the square with the upward pointing arrow) to email it to yourself (some PDFs a protected and don't support emailing) and use 'open in' in the Mail app on your iPad to copy it to its Mail app.
Or you can connect the phone to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy it over to your iTunes (that should copy PDFs and/or epubs that are in the iBooks app, not just ibooks) and if using a Mac with Mavericks or Yosemite on it then do File > Move Books From iTunes in its  iBooks app, and you can then sync it to your iPad.

    Hi,
Is there any application for copying files between PC and Iphone using a 3G or Edge connection? I'm using Jaadu VNC client on my Iphone but it has no functions for file transfers (as far as I know).
    Thanks for any hints!

No. I don't believe that would be allowed with the SDK. You could always email them to yourself.

    hi

do i need to install a third party software ? which one ?
    thank you

You can't browse the iPhone's filesystem and directly move file to/from the phone. There obviously is some software anywhere out there capable of doing this.
However, these are Apple's forums, and as breaking the phone and using third party software is at this point of time not allowed, you should not ask here about this software.

  • FLA files between Mac and PC versions of Flash CS3

Hello, I have a PC at work and a Mac at home and have found
that there are differences with font rendering in Flash CS3 on each
    operating system.
I have a Flash application that looks beautiful. However, the
same .FLA file will position fonts a few pixels differently on my
    mac.
For instance, I can make a flash file on my PC with perfectly
positioned fonts and after publishing, these fonts will look
perfect on both PC and Mac (from the SWF). If I then open the .FLA
on my Mac the fonts will be slightly off, and after publishing the
fonts will be off on both the PC and on Mac (from the SWF).
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Anyone got any
suggested workarounds or am I stuck?
This is the only major problem I've had going between the CS3
programs on my PC and my Mac (I mainly use Dreamweaver and Flash).
    Thanks for any help!

I have this same problem. Most fonts are vertically
misaligned after loading a PC-created FLA on a Mac, and vice versa.
OpenType fonts seem to have a greater baseline shift than Truetype
fonts. Arial is one of the few fonts that doesn't shift (that I've
tried). The direction of the shift is upwards from PC->Mac, and
downwards from Mac->PC. Also, the linespacing changes. On the
Mac the linespacing is reduced, so multiple lines get bunched
together. To see this issue, create a new document on either
platform and place some text. Draw a line at the baseline of the
text. Save and reload this file on the other platform.
If you make the text dynamic and click on "show border around
text," the problem gets a little more interesting. On the PC, all
text with ascenders and descenders appear firmly within the border.
On the Mac, the border excludes the ascenders on OpenType fonts, so
the text butts up right to the border and ascenders poke out the
top. This is a bug in its own right. I work primarily with Folio
fonts, and have seen this problem on all of the OpenType fonts I've
tried. On TrueType fonts I tend to see the bounding box "almost"
right, but it still just clips the ascenders, and causes a small
    baseline shift.
I think the baseline shift problem is because the Mac version
determines the bounding box incorrectly. When you place text using
the text cursor, it does it according to the font's baseline, which
is good. But I suspect Flash stores the position of the text in
terms of the upper left (or any other) corner of the bounding box.
Because the bounding box is calculated incorrectly (but
consistently) on a single platform, reloading the file within that
platform results in perfect positioning. Loading another platform's
FLA would cause a shift because the font's bounding box is
different -- it's the same position of the textfield, but the
displayed text relative to that store textfield position is higher
up on the Mac than on the PC.
This problem has really made me regret switching to the Mac.
have to do all my work inside Parallels now, on Flash CS3/Win,
because the artists and other Flash developers in the office are
all on PC. It is a total showstopper for me, and quite aggravating.
I simply can't check in my FLAs on the Mac side with my Mac
positioning, because it makes it impractical for anyone else to
    edit my work.

  • Exchanging files between eMac and iMac Intel ( GUID Scheme hard drive bug )

    Hi,
I have to exchange big file and folder regularly between 2 Mac ( Home and work ), before it was easy because both computer are eMac ( 700 mhz combo drive OS X 10.3.9 ) I used my firewire backup drive to transferred files.
Now I change my home computer for a new iMac intel, naturally I had to format my firewire backup drive to GUID scheme to be able to boot with, but now when I connect this drive to the eMac it refuse to mount; when I connect it to the eMac a window appeared asking to format the drive, when I check with Disk Utility the application see the drive but refused to mount it.
Is there a hack to force the eMac to read and write to a GUID scheme drive?
    Cheers,
    Luc

Macs running an OS earlier than 10.4.x can't recognize the GUID partition table. The easiest fix is to update the eMac to run OS X 10.4.8
There are tips online for formatting an external drive to be bootable for both Intel and PPC Macs (e.g. this link) but it appears those tips still require the PPC Mac to be running 10.4.x
