Exclaimation Marks

Dear all,
I recently bought an iPod 160GB Classic. Previously I had used an Archos 605 for all my mp3 needs, syncing it with Windows Media Player.
So, I opened Itunes and clicked File/Open Folder and selected my 'My Music' folder with all my music in. After a few hours, all my music had been opened into Itunes and everything was fine. I synced my new iPod and everything worked.
However, today I attempted to sync my iTunes but was shown an error window stating something like 'iTunes cannot find the location of this music...want to locate it now?'. So, a lot of the songs in iTunes had this exclaimation mark beside them, highlighting a problem. I clicked 'Locate' and found one of the song's location, which enabled me to play that song again and cleared it of exclaimation marks.
I thought the problem was that my iTunes was having to find music stored in 'My Music' rather than 'iTunes Library'; so I selected all the files in 'My Music' and dragged them into my 'iTunes Library' folder.
Yet, to my surprise, this did not fix the problem and instead, when I opened up iTunes, it was blank.
All my music is located in the 'iTunes Library' folder still, but I cannot File/Open From Folder and open it into iTunes because it tells me that I don't have enough space on my C: (because I'm running low).
Is there anyway I can get my music back onto my iTunes? If so, where do I need to save my music in the future, etc?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Glenn.

First make sure you have the copy files setting turned off:

Sounds like your .itl file got damaged. Try creating a new library by holding down the shift key while starting itunes:

  • Help! Some of my photos in iPhoto have a big round white circle with an exclaimation mark in it. Can you help me?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iphoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Ipod Nano shows file with exclaimation mark!

Bought this for my daughter for Christmas! Can anyone help me before she gets up in the morning to find it not working!
The screen shows the file with exclaimation mark. I have followed all the 5R advice on the apple site. All my software is bang up to date on my G4 powerbook - even loaded the software disc onto my imac and installed the software successfully. Neither computer will mount the ipod - itunes won't open automatically. If I open it manually it doesn't see the nano! I have tried restore using the ipod software updater on both computers. Each time it freezes!
    Can anyone help - emergency!

  • When I double click on a photo an exclaimation mark appears

when I double click on a photo an exclaimation mark appears
    how can I fix this?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto do you have? The strategies for resolving vary from version to version.
Of course, restoring from back up will work in any version.

  • Exclaimation Marks all over

I am on Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6, iMac 27" 2010.  Most of my photos are showing up at exclamation marks when I click on the thumb nails.  I understand iPhoto somehow lost the connection btw thumbnail and file, how do I fix it in this version?  (I have rebuilt the library once already.  It does not fix the issue.  I have not tried going to the iPhoto Library Manager.)  Pls help.

I followed the advice on the link and "restored" from Time Machine a copy of iPhoto Library from Feb.  This  library at that time (Feb)  is ~46GB.  The file created by the restore is about 12GB. I noticed the icon of this library is a simple file folder, not the iPhoto icon.
    I tried two things:
    1. Open iPhoto so that I can choose which library to use.  This "restored" version does not show up a a library of choice even though the file name is "iPhoto Library".
    2. Click on the newly created folder and I got this message on the terminal:
Last login: Tue Nov 18 10:25:16 on ttys003
    Ella2010siMac2:iPhoto Library ellafshum$
I deleted this restored folder. Went back into Time Machine to find a date when the icon is iPhoto and not simple folder. It was in August.  So I restored from that copy.  The exclamation marks are all over the place.  This version of iPhoto also has the broken links.
QUESTION: what happened to the older iPhoto Library backups? why did they lose the iPhoto Library status and why does it open console and gave me that message? Pls help. Thx.

  • What is Exclaimation Mark on some photos?

After altering some settings (max) for viewing web-sites, etc, I've found that 25-30% of my photos in iPhoto show up with a big, black exclaimation point where the picture should be! What's going on? Thanks for your time.

It means that the file path to the original file has been broken.  Do the following: make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Error Message (Arrow and Exclaimation Mark in Yellow Triangle) Showing on Bottom Right of Some Photos after Merging iPhoto Library into Aperture

The strange thing is that some of these said photos with an error message have a normal thumbnail and can be opened fine, but the others (most of them) just have an empty space in the thumbnail as if the image can't be found.
I tried to Locate Referenced Files as Leonie suggested in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3686982?tstart=0 but got this message 'The Selection Doesn't Have Any Referenced Files', so i presume that's not the issue.
In the thread mentioned above, Leonie mentioned something about not emptying trash. I did empty my trash recently, and started to think these images may have been poor quality ones i previously deleted in the iPhoto library … but that still doesn't explain why the error currently appears on some images which seem to work fine (these images are ok quality ones and there is no way i would have deleted them in the past).
Also - the 'Processing' message at the bottom of the browser seems to be spinning endlessly. I just left it for over 10 hours overnight and it's still going. Could this be linked to these error images which it's having a hard time finding/loading?
Quite baffled at the moment, and would really appreciate any feedback. TIA.
    EDIT:
I just looked more closely. It appears that most of my folders have duplicates of the same image with exactly the same file name. And all the images with the error message have them on both duplicates (i.e. one on an image that has an empty thumbnail, and one on an image that's fine).
When i initially tried to import the library, it proceeded half way then failed. After opening the iPhoto library in Aperture first, and then doing the import again, everything worked fine. So, i'm wondering if the images with errors that are empty/blank may be the result of the failed 1st import.
What's puzzling is why they weren't overwritten (especially since all the file names are exactly the same). When importing the library, i chose 'merge' instead of 'add' when prompted, thinking that would solve it. Obviously not.
    EDIT 2:
After reflecting on this, i thought one solution may be to:
    a) Find all the error'd images that are empty/blank and delete them, and then
    b) Find and remove all duplicates
So i followed Leonie's suggestion to create a Smart Album and use the 'File Status is Missing' rule.
But now, i see that there are images that i imported into Aperture months ago that have the same problem. And the new thing is that there are duplicates with errors where *both* images are visible (whereas for the iPhoto library i just imported, there were dupes where one version was blank and the other was visible and seemingly ok).
I'm really hoping there is a simple solution to this, and am awaiting some feedback before i try anything else.
NB. This is a super large (over 100GB) Aperture library that i am trying to consolidate everything into. It is Work In Progress and i was only going to back it up once the import of various iPhoto libraries was done. However, I'm wondering if it's better to just back up first - but if i do it now, the backup will include all these errors and duplicates. What would you guys do?

    UPDATE 2:
The users in these 2 threads seem to have a similar File Status Not Found issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4086569?tstart=0
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17757686#17757686
Followed Leonie's advice to look for the (missing) masters inside the Masters folder, and indeed, they were missing. So, that confirms the reason for the error message.
If this does not work, because you have managed originals, inside the Aperture Library, look for your originals in the Aperture Library Package. Select the Library in the Finder and ctrl-click, then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up. In the Finder window that opens, navigate to the folder "Masters". Your missing images should be inside; the folder is structured by date of import.
Of course, the question is - why the masters for these few images are missing, when the other images in the same project that were imported/merged at the same time are fine.
Trying to do the library import/merge from iPhoto into Aperture again. Fingers crossed. Will report back on the result.

  • I have had a booking today I can't read it shows exclaimation marks how can I find the missing information?

And I can't find a number to talk to anyone!

Have you tried using the history icon in the lower right corner of the response table to see when the change occurred? It is the icon that looks like a clock. Click it and then you can step back through the time like to see when your data changed.

  • Can't install update to 10.4.3 - red exclaimation over disk

I have a G4 iMac and am having a problem installing any MacOS X update over 10.4.3.
When I download any Delta or Combo PPC updater and start the process, when I get to the window to select the disk to update, the only disk has a red exclaimation mark over it,
Effectively, I can't update 10.4.3 to anything higher?

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via System Updater in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set System Updater to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.

  • [!] marks on iPod iTunes files

On iTunes, when I clicked on some of my iPod music files, an exclaimation mark appeared next to them. Then, on the main head iPod file, they all worked (sans the [!] files), and all the remaining working files work again, even in the subfolders. Anyone else having this crazy problem?

Update: The iPod has been working so slowly, sometimes the music is all messed up, and iTunes just cannot connect with the iPod. I thought at several points that I lost all my files, but they still exist, but when I tried to restore last night with the latest iPod update, it did not recognize the iPod.

  • Ipod Mini has exclaimation folder permantly on display

Neither I Tunes nor windows recognises my ipod any more and the display is now stuck on the folder with the exclaimation mark. I have tried holding down the keys (to get to disk mode) and the apple logo appears breifly but the ipod returns to the exclamation error. I tunes cannot see the device nor can windows. As such I cannot even restore to factory settings and thus loose my 900+ songs. I have checked the troubleshooting sections and have tried "all of the above". Can anything be done to save my tracks I so painfully downloaded.
PS - I have only backed up 30 or tracks as hard drive space on my pc is limited.

exclamation is a hardware issue. the motherboard inside could be at fault. possibly the only way to get tracks off would be to take out the hard drive and put it into a working mini. as long as the hard drive itself is not damaged. sending in for repair would cost you as much as purchasing a new one unless your warranty is still in effect. i've done this to a mini before and have had success in repairing. i repair ipod's for a hobby and have come to be good at doing so.

  • TS4611 exlaimation mark in wifi icon

I have a macbook air purchased last fall.  Since I came back from a one-week trip around Christmas, I have been unable to connect to my home wifi network.  There is an exclaimation mark in the wifi icon.  I have several other devices (mac, iphone, ipad, pc), and most of them work fine - except my son's macbook pro and my wife's iPad.  We tried several recommended solutions - "forgetting" the network and re-establishing the connection.  I looked online for possible solutions, but so far, no luck.  What is going on?  Does anyone have any idea?

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • Music won't sync has exclamation marks next to titles

When I went into my ITunes account with IPod Touch connected, it said to update to latest version of ITunes so I agreed and it upgraded but then it said my IPod was in Recovery mode. I did the recovery and when I went to sync my Library 21 songs only out of 1000 + synced. All the others have an exclaimation mark next to them. Each time I close and reopen the exclaimationn marks are gone but it still doesn't work. The songs were all on the IPod previosly before I did the update and the recovery What to do?

You should sync it again and this time you'll get 0 song. Yes, that's what will happen. Its quite amazing a company that famous for making music device like IPOD could mess up this bad. Not sure if its cause by IOS 7 or ITunes 11. Probably both
