Exclamation mark-will they go on ipod?

hey,
i have just bought an external hard drive, and i have my music on there, and on my computer.
however i would like to delete it off my computer nad just keep it on the external hard drive.
i am getting exclamtion marks by my songs, as iTunes must be having a problem finding my external hard drive, even though i have moved my iTunes music library...i think it is the fault of the external hard drive
so i would like to know if the songs with the exclamation mark will go onto my ipod, will still go onto my ipod?does the exclamation mark just mean that they dont play in iTunes?
thank you for your help!

Hannah,
You need to move the music files back to where they were and then move the Library using iTunes (see below). Otherwise your Library will be severly broken.
If you want to make another drive (direct or portable) on your PC the main music location for iTunes, move all song files there, as well as any future imported music from CDs, here is one method (see the links below):
You will maintain your playlists, ratings, comments, etc. This will only move your music folders location, NOT your iTunes program files or the Library database files. It is my opinion that programs (i.e. – iTunes) work better when installed on your main hard drive. At the very least, it makes it easier to manage all your programs if they are centrally located on one hard drive (the Windows default standard).
See these links for some step-by-step info:
iLounge: Moving your iTunes Library to a New Hard Drive
MacMuse: iTfW: Move iTunes music/Library to new drive
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
If you are moving the music to an external hard drive or network drive, after the transfer (and to work correctly), the drive must be running prior to your opening iTunes. If not, iTunes will reset the location of your music folder location to the default location (usually: ‘C:\...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music’). If this happens, you need to manually change the path back to your external location, or future CD ‘Imports’ will be deposited on your internal HD.
Also make sure that the new drive always loads as the same Drive Letter, otherwise you will lose the references within iTunes.

  • Wireless Headphones - Will they work with iPods

I am thinking about getting a pair of wireless headphones, but before I invest in them, I want to make sure that they will work with the iPod nano 2nd generation if I get a pair that is not bluetooth. The cord will tend to get in the way while I'm working, which is why I'm thinking about wireless. I asked this before but didn't get any responses.

No ipod has wireless technology built in so wireless headphones are only going to work if the ones you get have a device that connects directly with the ipod to transmit the signal.

  • Organising photos with exclamation marks

it would be great to find an answer to this question. I have missing photos for a few years now on my iphoto and i have thousands of photos. I would like to delete the thumbnails that show up with the exclamation marks as they are in the way now when I want to use my photos as a slideshow or screen saver. is there a way of sorting the photos so I can delete them in one batch instead of going through them one by one?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    No.
The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try rebuilding the database. Hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
    If that fails:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Exclamation marks and duplicates

A while ago I messed up when copying my library to and exhd. Anyway I have cocked up again in a different way and I have 3 copies of songs in my itunes library, one of each has no tick next to it because I went through the whole library weeks ago and unchecked one of everything, these also have an exclamation mark next to them. Then some have exclamation marks and ticks.
    Confused? I am!
Anyway what I want to know is whether I can somehow delete the whole library and then just somehow get one of everything back, or somehow bulk delete these exclamation lists?
My ipod is on autosync so I daren't connect it incase I lose some things or end up with tthousands of duplicates on the ipod.
    Any help appreciated....

iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder is the file where iTunes stores the information about your library, tracks, ratings, counts, playlists.
You drag it to the desk top so iTunes can't find it and creates a new empty library. The desktop is just a convenient place to put it without deleting it, you might want to put it back.
When you add your music folder to iTunes, all the tracks with exclamation marks will be gone and you will only have entries for the files actually in your iTune music folder. This only addresses tracks with exclamation marks which are dead links, it does nothing about duplicate files.

  • Exclamation mark warning pop up

Hello, a few minutes ago I was on my phone and a kind of 'warning' symbol popped up.
It was an exclamation mark inside a white circle that was inside a big black rectangle, the whole
thing was a bit bigger than the icon that comes on the screen when the volume is altered with the buttons
on the side of the phone. I don't know if this is an actual warning for something but I'm going to assume that something bad
is happening because it was an exclamation mark and they dont usually signify good things regarding technology.
I've never heard of anything like this happening to anyone before and I'm hoping someone can
    help me with this.
I have looked on the internet for answers and I can't seem to find anything.
Earlier on today I was having problems syncing my iPhone 5c with my laptop. It was stuck on step
5 for what seemed like an eternity so I cancelled the sync and I unplugged my phone from the laptop while
the sync was cancelling. I dont know if maybe this is the reason the 'warning' popped up, but the syncing
incident happened at least an hour before the exclamation mark popped up on my phone.
I was on the YouTube app when the 'warning' came up on the screen and maybe it could have something
to do with that I have no idea but I didn't touch the screen before it popped up.
If no one knows what's going on with this then I shall contact Apple but I figured it must have happened
    to someone before.
    Thanks.

  • ITunes has recently began corrupting my music library and my Podcasts. An exclamation mark has appeared at the beginning of a random number of songs and against some Podcasts with the result that they will not play on iTunes. Message is that iTunes cannot

iTunes has recently began corrupting my Music  and some of the Podcasts.  An exclamation mark appears at a random selection of songs - about a thoussanad of them - and they will not play as iTunes says that it cannot locate the file.  This also has happened on a number of Podcasts.  Any one else encountered this?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, if you are running Windows (you've posted in iTunes for Windows, but your sig mentions Mac OS X...), and as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

  • My pictures will not open. When I click on them they only display a grey triangle and an exclamation mark inside it.

I know how I messed it all up.
I opened up Finder from the bottom dock and saw all my files including pics. Trying to free up as much space as possible on my pc I selected all and then deleted it. I thought because it is all in iphoto ,deleting it from Finder will not take it off everywhere. Later on I emptied the trash. When I finally realised that I had messed up I just went back on Time Machine and restored.
Now I can see what looks like all the files again it is there in Finder but when I try and open the pics in iphoto it simply shows a grey triangle with an exclamation mark in it?
I tried dragging them all into my iphoto from Finder but it said I do not have enough space.
Please help I am new to Apple.

1 - NEVER make any changes of any sort tot he content or structure of the iPhoto library using the finder - there are no user servicable parts in it
2 - what did you restore from Time Machine? and how did you restore?
3 - how much free space do you have on your hard drive?

  • Syncing ipod to itunes with exclamation marks

    Hi,
I was wondering if I sync my ipod with exclamation marks on some of my songs in itunes, will those songs disappear from my ipod if I sync it? There are quite a few songs in my playlist that have exclamation marks next to them saying that they can't be found, however they are already on my ipod. I have been afraid to hook up my ipod to add new songs I've added for fear the ones I already have on it that now can't be found will dissappear. I did move some of the songs to an external hard drive to make some room on my computer hard drive, but some I can't find. Can you help me?

You should understand how iTunes managed your music.
If you move, edit, delete or otherwise change a music file listed in the iTunes Library with a program or tool other than iTunes, you may end up with a "!" in front of the song name or a message like “the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" It is important to note that iTunes does not keep track of music file changes made outside of iTunes.

    EASIER:
Download this to your Desktop: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/FindDeadTracks.txt (right-click, save-link-as)
    and this, as well: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/RemoveDeadTracks.txt (right-click, save-link-as)
    Rename each to FindDeadTracks.js & RemoveDeadTracks.js respectively.
    Run iTunes.
    1) While iTunes is running, double click FindDeadTracks.js to run the script.
It will give you a list of all the exclamation marked tracks.
    2) While iTunes is running, double click RemoveDeadTracks.js to run the script.
It will remove all the exclamation marked tracks.

  • Since the Nov update about a third of my songs have a circle with an exclamation mark inside it. These song will not play on my computer. I reload with my own cd collection, it works for a while then the same thing happens. Message says "Song could not be

Since Nov update about a third of my songs have a circle with an exclamation mark inside the circle. These songs will not play on my computer. Message says  "The song .... could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"  I have reloaded these back onto itunes with my own CD collection. They work for a short while, then the same thing happens. I don't  know what is causing this or how to fix it.

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • HD on my iPod has failed me.  Will they fix it?!?!?!

I just got finished gathering 1900 songs (4.8 hours)onto my iPod. Now just tonight, I was going to get all of the songs from my iPod to my computer. (I think this happened earlier today because I saw my iPod "straggle" in the car) A few hours ago I plugged my iPod into my computer and opened it with my media player, nothing unusual. I was getting ready to drop all the music into my computer, but before I did, I wanted to edit some files. I did a little bit in the media program, but I wanted to edit the disk numbers of some of the files, which this program doesn't do. So I go over and open iTunes. (I'm sorry, but I HATE iTunes, and here are one of the reasons why) It's taking forever to get it to open and it's getting stuck more than usual. But the wierdest most unusual thing was that it slowed a whole bunch when I tried to do something off the iPod and then sometimes the slowness would cause iTunes to stop responding (even though it doesn's say it's stopped responding.) At one point, after getting the iPod plugged and unplugged, the iPod misplaced all of the files and asked me for the default language, as if it was restored or brand new. But it wasn't. I restarted the iPod and I got a window I actually haven't seen before, with a folder and exclamation mark (sometimes it shows a sad iPod) and tells me to go to HP iPod support. But when I attempt to restart the iPod one or two more times, it boots as normal, but the hardrive sounds like it has come back from Vietnam. The computer doesn't recognize the iPod anymore, and when it's plugged in, the computer slows down and stalls up a bunch until it's unplugged. The iPod still plays music, but it goes really slow, anywhere between 5 to 20 seconds to perform the simplist tasks. Will ANYONE be able to get my iPod to work? Can someone AT LEAST drain the songs off of the iPod onto another device???

"and I'll make sure no more people ask for your help."
What are you going to do? Shut down the discussions forums?
No one is PAID to answer questions here.
We're all just users who have some knowledge about iPods.
Your post is one long paragraph and is somewhat difficult to read.
If you care for my suggestions, here they are:
1.) Plug in your iPod through other ports on your machine
2.) Attach it to a different Windows PC
3.) Attach it to a Mac
Or you could do what the iPod told you and go to HP support.

  • Music is not playing on ipod 80gig on pc or head phones, an exclamation mark does show

I have an older generation Ipod 80 gig...some 13500 songs are currently not playing through head phones when I select say an album. It just flips from one to the next to the next song as listed in the album.  The same happens if I select a playlist.
If I try to open a song whilst the ipod is connected to my windows pc the song does not play - an exclamation mark comes up against the file selected.
How can I get my ipod to return to playing the songs within.
    Thanks

    I have a similar problem.
I just bought 2 albums (Pirates of the Caribean III and Linkin Park - Mintues to midnight) and every time I want to play one of the songs it asks me for my account password. After entering it, it says this computer was activated. But it still doesn't work!!
If I want to sync I get the same message:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod"
I've also bought a iPod-Game (Mahjong) and have the same problem...
    I have a 80GB video iPod.
