Exclamation point beside certain songs

What does it mean when there is an exclamation point beside certain songs in my iTunes library and how can this be fixed?

It means that iTunes can't find the original song file any more.  If you have the files on an external NAS drive, and it's napping when you are manipulating stuff in iTunes, the exclamation points may appear.
This utility can help fix the exclamation points if you are certain that the song files still exist in the place they were when you added them to your iTunes library:

  • HT1589 problems with itunes after updating..can't locate some of my songs..some have an exclamation point beside them how do i get these songs back in my itunes

I'm having problems with itunes after updating. I've lost all my playlists,,finally played around with it and got the songs back but some have an exclamation point beside them and can't be located. they are songs i've purchased. I'm not very computer literate so this is a major problem. I have spent hours with this. I just want all my songs to play even though I'm not happy that I have to recreate my playlists. It would be so much easier if I knew and understood how to correct this. Has anyone else had this problem and if so..is there an easy way to correct it?

Not sure how this is an ipod touch question.
Perhaps you should post in the itunes forum.

  • Can't sync with Google Calendar - exclamation point beside cal name

I am trying to sync iCal with Google Calendar using this recipe:
    http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=99358
However, once I have entered my Google calendar info, I only get an exclamation point beside the calendar name of the calendar I just created.
I get no error message, nothing, just an exclamation point.
    Any idea what's wrong?

Just tried creating a brand new Google-account, but I get the same error when I try to sync it with iCal ...
... which leads me to believe this is an iCal-error?

  • Why is there and exclamation point beside some of my songs?

I rebuilt my computer and transferred everything from my old hard drive to my new hard drive--or so I thought.  I now have exclamation points next to some of my songs.  When I try to play the song, it says it's not available.  Why is that and how do I get those songs back?

Make sure you have updated to iTunes 11.0.1 (or later). In Music use the Songs view, or select the List view for other media (Edit > Preferences > General > Show list views for all media). Enable the menu bar with ctrl-b. Use View > Display Duplicates or, more usefully,  hold Shift and use View > Display Exact Duplicates.
Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.
I have plans to extend the DeDuper script so that it can clean up when there are missing files but the current version expects all copies to be present. To clean missing files without trying to preseve ratings, playlist membership etc. try itunes_remove_notfound.

  • I have songs in my iTunes library that I burned from CD's. They play in iTunes and will sync with my iPad. They play fine on the iPad.  However, the songs will not sync to my iPhone 4S.  There are now exclamation points next to songs (can't find source).

I burned cd's in iTunes. The songs were able to sync and play on my iPad. After this, exclamation points appeared in iTunes on my laptop (unable to find source).  They still play in iTunes but will not sync with my iPhone 4S.  Do some cd's have a limit on the number of times you can copy them or is this an iTunes problem.

KiwiLouisa - I had the same problem.  I was eventually able to distribute my content that was "Not eligible for iCloud" to my iPhone by switching off ITunes Match in both the ITunes app/machine that hosts my library (my Macbook Pro, in this case) as well as on the device to which I wished to distribute my content (my iPhone 6+).  This opened up the option for my device iTunes Music settings for selecting "Entire Music Library".
After I successfully transferred *ALL* my music and music videos via iTunes sync, I then again switched on ITunes Match in iTunes on my Macbook and on my iPhone.
This does not change the iCloud status, but at least I have the content on my iPhone.

  • My ipod will not stay connected to my computer.  When first plugged into the usb port, I can see it as a drive.  Within seconds it disappears.  If I look in the devices area, I can see it but it has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point beside it.

When I connect my ipod to a usb port on my computer, I can see it in my computer as a drive for a few seconds and then it disappears.  It can be seen under devices but as a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it.  If I run trouble shoot, it states windows is disconnecting this device.
I can see it in itunes as a device.  However, this is a brand new computer, running windows 7.  My last one bit the dust in mid use.  I want to save the songs on my ipod and to do that I believe I need to be able to see the files on the ipod.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great Troubleshooting on your own so far!. (If you got 2 PC and 2 iPod would be much easier, some of the people in this community has more than 2 of each.)
Hope you did not connect it to a USB Hub, the sync cable must be plug in directly to a USB2 port at the back of the Desktop Computer.
If you have a spare Notebook, with iTunes, connect it to the Notebook, to check if the iPod is working or hung.
Can you iPod run and play songs, when disconnected from the PC? (Sorry, for just asking the obvious)
Anyway, just hard reset your iPod, so that we can start from scratch
    1. if your iPod is hung, reset it by pressing Menu and Center button for at least 10 secs till the Apple logo, comes on. (this won't delete your songs in the iPod, if they are not corrupted))
    2. Connect it back to your Notebook or Desktop.
if your iPod screen is dead, try charging the battery by connecting it to another computer. if it doesn't connect to successfully to another computer, it may need servicing.
    Good luck!

  • Moved library from PC to Mac w/ iPod now exclamation points next to songs

I used the instructions at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173 to move my iTunes library from a PC to my new MacBook Pro.
Everything seemed to go smoothly...I moved the iTunes folder from the iPod to the Music folder on the Mac, then opened iTunes. Then something went wrong that I can tell will take me hours to fix. Or at least I hope not:
The first time I did it, all the songs had the exclamation point next to them and when attempting to play, I got the 'file not found do you want to spend hours re-linking all the files?' message. I moved the iTunes folder and tried it again. This time, about 95% of the 1,100+ songs had the exclamation point. And as I clicked on the few without the exclamation point to try and play them, they too developed the exclamation point blues.
Is this fixable? The .itl and .xml files are in the 'Music' folder. Should I try moving the iTunes folder from the iPod again? I also noticed that while my playlists and custom genre tags, etc. made it, the album artwork did not .
    Please help! Thanks so much!

It is a likely possibility that the format of the folders is different between the 2 OS. Troubleshoot these
Make sure you have actually music files in the folder from your XP. Make sure you transfered your main music folder (My Music)
Do you have the folders in this order in your music category on your MacBook? iTunes>(iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library data file)iTunes Music>(all of your music
If these dont work, then use Yamipod, a 3rd party utility that can extract all your info/music off your iPod into iTunes...

  • How do i get rid of the exclamation points by my songs

I transferred my music on to a new computer from a zip drive.  Some of my songs play fine, but others have an exclamation point next to them and say the file can't be found.  What do I do?

Select a broken song, press Ctrl+I to get info, click No when iTunes asks you locate the file, then look at the location on the summary tab. It will begin file://localhost/. Where is the file really?
I'd expect broken songs to be listed as file://localhost/<some path>/<Artist>/<Album>/## <Name>.<Ext> and the real location to be <different path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext>. Sometimes it is just a matter of manipulating the physical location to match iTunes records, or tweaking a settings file if one path includes a folder called Music before <Artist> but the other doesn't. If that won't work I have a script called FindTracks that can be pointed at the folder with the media and used to reconnect the tracks as long as they are in some vague semblance of order.

  • Exclamation point next to song

On every song in my library I have an exclamation point to the right of the songs and tv shows. When I click on it I can't play anything. It says file not found. Does anyone know how this happened? Help! Thanks

I've had the same problem in the past. I've found that the only way to fix the problem, is to delete the songs with the exclamation point next to them from itunes and then re-add them to itunes. As for how this happens, I don't know. I'll do the same thing if a song I want on my ipod does transfer over.

  • "Original file could not be found" - exclamation point next to song

All of a sudden there are exclamation points in the very left hand column of the iTunes list next to some of the songs in my library. When I try to play these songs, it says "The song _ could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
Why is this happening? How do I make it stop? Do I have to re-upload every song one by one from my hard drive? Ack!

no idea why this happens, but the easiest way to solve this is to go to +edit/add folder+/ and find the folder in your itunes music files that contains the album and select it. you might now have duplicates, so just ctrl-select the songs with exclamation marks and you'll have only the ones you just reimported.

  • Itunes won't play music - exclamation points by all songs - need help!!

I have been on this board several times and still can't locate the answer to allow me to play my music in Itunes. Here is my situation. If you can help, I would appreciate it.
I have had my Itunes library stored on my external hard drive. I hadn't accessed Itunes in a while and when I did, my music is no longer being recognized by the program. All I get is the exclamation point next to each song and when I click on the song I am asked to relocate the song itself. Since getting the exclamation point no matter what I do short of relocating every song individually (over 4000 songs), I decided to call "apple cares". I had no success with them as they couldn't help.
I have now unistalled/reinstalled my Itunes twice, I have redirected my preferences to my external drive and consolidated my library several times, I have tried to use my older less updated library on my regular hard drive only to have the same exclamation points appear.
I am at a loss as to what I need to do. I really don't want to lose my music - imported from cds or purchased - nor do I want to spend the rest of 2007 relocating each and every song.
If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate help. You can email me directly at [email protected]
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Debra

Thanks for replying, Please read our Operating System details before taking a guess about what 'could' be the problem...
I think I figured it out anyway, Windows Media Player might be adding extra information that iTunes does not like, either Windows Media Player and/or iTunes 7.7.1 don't conform to ID3 v2.4 standards...
Please fix your software, Apple. I know how you love to be unique and mock PC users with your one-sided advertisements but at least conform to the ID3 standards.

  • I get an error with a exclamation point when matching songs.

I ran itunes match and some of my songs have an exclamation point in a cloud icon  and the word error in the match status.  These are recent cd rips and it is not complet albums.  A couple of albums it is just one song and others it is numerous songs.

Here's your explanation of that icon: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/22/itunes-match-icons-explained/

  • Exclamation Point Next to Songs!!!!!!

    hello All,
Does anyone know why all of my albums in my ipod have an exclamation point by the 1st 2 or 3 songs? This is really weird. Please help.

For some reason itunes may think that the file is deleted. Click on the exclamation mark and itunes will tell you that it cannot find the son. you then get the option of locating it on the file system
