Exclamation point over thumbnail in iPhoto

When I click on a thumbnail to enlarge it, an exclamation point appears over it blacking the photo out. These are photos I have made and imported to iPhoto. How can I get rid of the exclamation point to edit the photos? Thanks for your help.

No, I do not remember doing anything in Finder having to do with iPhoto or photos.
I did try the re-build as you suggested but nothing was changed - I continue to get the ! when I click on a photo.
I do have another iPhoto Library in which I am working and clicking on a photo in that library enlarges it. (I the library I want to use with iPhoto Library Manager.)
So, I think I'll just trash the library that is giving me problems and build on the Library that is working. I have the original photos on disk and it will only take time to do the imports.
Thanks, TD, for your help.

  • EXCLAMATION POINT OVER FOLDER ICON

My Macbook wont start up! I get a exclamation point folder icon! Can anyone help?

Any more details? My first response, (do not perform until you post more details to the board) would be to install the Leopard install disk and repair permissions via the DVD Install Disk. Did you perform an upgrade to a previous system or purchase it preloaded? Any programs/software recently installed? Any 3rd party utilities? Font packages? Others will not be able to respond without more details. What were you doing right before this happened? Are you using bootcamp? When do you see the exclamation point in the startup process?

  • Iphoto- Can see thumbnail, but when clicked a circle with a gray circle and a black exclamation point shows up.

Once I click a picture in Iphoto this pops up.
I can clearly see the picture when its in a thumbnail. I have really Important pictures of my whole family and I would be so devastated if I lost them. I didn't mess around with Iphoto at all. All I ever did was upload pictures to it and one day this started happening to ALL my pictures on there.

    Sorry,
    your screenshot is not showing.
But an exclamation point usually signifies, that iPhoto cannot access the original image files.
Where is your iPhoto library located? On your system drive, or do you keep it on an external drive?
What version of iPhoto are you running?
Have you installed or updated any software lately? Run any cleaning applications, like MacKeeper, CleanYourMac?
The first thing to try would be to rebuild your iPhoto library. assuming you are using iPhoto '11, see this post by Old Toad:

  • IPod stuck on folder with exclamation point

My iPod suddenly stopped working and started showing me the apple logo and the folder with the exclamation point over and over again.
I have uninstalled all software, reinstalled, followed everything in the trouble-shooting section on this site. I have tried to manually reset it, but it doesn't recognize that. Windows recognizes the iPod, but neither the updater or iTunes do. I tried to restore it, but it just freezes every time.

Looks as though there is a problem with your iPod. Better have someone, say at an Apple Store, to check it out.

  • Cannot load applet; coffee cup and exclamation point shown, or black box

I am having trouble loading several Java applets under Safari for Windows. These will load with a coffee cup image with an exclamation point over top, or sometimes will simply show a black retangle. How can I go about troubleshooting this? I see no Java Console anywhere in Safari and no other trace of what's going on. How can I debug this?

Are you using the webkit version of Safari? I think it has more diagnostic information than the public releases.

Only an exclamation point shows up when I click a thumbnail in my iphoto folder. Is there any way to recover these photos by using the thumbnails? Please help. Thanks!

That exclamation mark is displayed when iPhoto cannot link to the original file.  First make sure you are running a "managed" library by checking iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to make sure the checkbox to copy files into the library during import is checked.
If it is checked you can try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I recently went to look at pictures in iphoto and once I click on them I get a black screen with an exclamation point?

It was fine yesterday?  I can see the photos when I scroll over the "event" in iphoto but when I open it and click on a picture, It gives me a big exclamation point?  Only on recent photos?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Thumbnails fine, full size pic yields exclamation point

Thumbnails look fine, but when I double click to expand, the screen shows a giant exclamation mark on a black background instead of the picture. Any idea what this is about? I have a bunch of these pictures, mostly scanned in from old photos and moved around a lot as I created albums and slideshows.
    Thanks.

I have a bunch of these pictures, mostly scanned in from old photos and moved around a lot as I created albums and slideshows.
How were they moved around? adding to an album or slideshow does not move anything - it simply creates a link to the photo. Did you use the finder to move photos inside of the iPhoto library?
basically the exclamation point indicates that iPhoto has lost the connection between the thumbnail and the original photo. If you have moved the originals using the finder or other programs excepting iPhoto then you will have to start over with a new library (unless you can put the library back exactly like it was)
If you have not used the finder inside of the iPhoto library then rebuild the library - backup and depress the option and command keys and launch iPhoto and rebuild from the last automatic database backup.
If that does not work use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to rebuild - this creates a totally new library so if you are not happy with the results you can simply go back to the original library

  • Exclamation points when i magnify the thumbnail

when i open my iphoto7.1.5, my pictures are complete in the thumbnail, but once i magnify that picture all i see are grey boxes with an exclamation point. I noticed that the number of pictures turning up like this is increasing. A few days ago only 2 pictures were doing this, but now, i dont even know anymore.
Is there a virus in mac thats affecting the photos? anyone who knows the smart solution?

No virus. (Why on earth does everyone think it's a virus? There aren't any!)
    It's a damaged database.
    Solutions:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
