EXCLAMATION POINTS in iPhoto 6?

Hi there,
I'm a long time Mac user, but this problem is something I have never seen.
In iPhoto 6, all of my photo albums are present and all of the thumbnails are there. However, when I click on some thumbnails (the pic should now enlarge in the viewer) I get a large EXCLAMATION POINT. Mind you this doesn't happen with all photos, just some, but there seems to be no reason for it. It doesn't seem to matter if the photo is a JPEG, PICT, etc.
I did not have this problem previous to my iLife 06 upgrade.
Any ideas of what is wrong? Any fixes?

I am having the same problem. I looked in iPhoto Library, and all of my folders have been rearanged. Everything before 2005 is either in a folder marked originals or Modified. Some photos from 2005 are even in one of these two folders. But I have entire rolls missing. One of the pics that is missing (the thumbnail is present) and that comes up with an exclamation point, I looked up that picture in the iPhoto Library, and the whole roll is missing.
Fortunately I backed up my entire hard drive (with the pics) just prior to loading iPhoto 6.
What do I do?
Thanks

  • Exclamation point in iPhoto

I have an exclamation point on some photos in iPhoto.  How do I resolve this?
    Thanks.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Exclamation point in iPhoto after transferring with Time Machine

Hi there -- I just got a new MacBook Pro, upgrading from a MacBook from 2008.  On my old MacBook, I used Time Machine to back up my entire computer, including all my photos in iPhoto.  On my old MacBook, all of my photos in iPhoto seem fine.  However, I used Time Machine to set up my new MacBook Pro, but there is a big issue with the photos in iPhoto.  When I first opened iPhoto on the MacBook Pro, it asked me if I wanted to upgrade my library or something like that.  I said yes.  Now, there appear to be tons of photos missing, particularly from recent "events."  By missing, I mean that there is neither a thumbnail image, nor is there an actual photo when I click on it -- it's the black screen with the grey exclamation point.  These seem to be scattered throughout many of my "events," however, with some events missing all the photos and other events missing photos seemingly at random.
I have seen other posts about holding down option and command while starting iPhoto and repairing/rebuilding the library.  I have tried this and it didn't work. Because the photos all seem fine on my old MacBook, I'm guessing the best option is to just try to re-load my photos in some way from Time Machine.  I have been unable to find a post, however, that explains how I can import just the photos from my Time Machine.  There are hundreds of photos that seem to be affected and as I stated, they seem to be at random, so it's not as easy as just picking a few out.
Thanks so much for any help!!

  • Exclamation point pops up when viewing photos??

I just imported a set of photos from a new camera that I haven't imported from before. I can see all the pictures when scrolling through the album, but when I double click one to open it larger I get this big exclamation point image. iPhoto also fails to show the same set of pictures in an iPhoto slideshow, although it shows them in a screensaver-slideshow fine. It can't be the format, because they're JPEG just like all of my other pictures. What's wrong?

How to progress? Depends on the version of iPhoto. If it's 09 or later:

  • I am having trouble viewing some of my pictures on iPhoto. A triangle with an exclamation point in the middle pops up instead, what can I do to get my pictures to show again?

I am having a hard time viewing some of my pictures or event file in my iPhoto library. Most of my pictures look blank with a black background and a triangle with an exclamation point in the center of the screen. Is there a way I can fix this issue?

Are they RAW image files and not JPG files? iPhoto does not support all types of RAW files. Get a Real Image Viewing/Editing/Cataloging program which iPhoto is not.

  • Only an exclamation point shows up when I click a thumbnail in my iphoto folder. Is there any way to recover these photos by using the thumbnails?

Only an exclamation point shows up when I click a thumbnail in my iphoto folder. Is there any way to recover these photos by using the thumbnails? Please help. Thanks!

That exclamation mark is displayed when iPhoto cannot link to the original file.  First make sure you are running a "managed" library by checking iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to make sure the checkbox to copy files into the library during import is checked.
If it is checked you can try the following: make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My iPhoto shows events but pictures have a gray triangle and exclamation point.  How do I get my pictures back?

Hi, I noticed recently that when I am in iPhoto  on my macBook Pro that some of my old pictures are no longer showing up.  It happens alot with my pictures from 2013 and back but sporadically through 2014.  The events are all listed and it shows how many pictures should be there but once I enter an event instead of the individual thumbnails I see a black background with a triangle and an exclamation point.  I have tried to restore my iPhoto library from time machine and am either doing it wrong or possibly their is corruption there.  I am getting stressed because this is TONS of my pictures.  Can anyone help or offer any advice?  Thank you!

This indicates a disconnect between the Thumbnail and the original
this can be caused by two things
1 - User action deleting items from inside the iPhoto  library - can be directly - can be from the All images list (never delete from there) - can be from running cleanup software like MacKeeer, CleanMac2  or other dangerous, defective software that improperly deletes or changes things in the iPhoto library - if you have done any of these things you must restore your backup from before you did them and damaged your iPhoto library - and I recommend getting rid of any "clean up software" ASAP (although being essentially MalWear it is not easy)
2 - corruption of the iPhoto library - If it is not #1 then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your database

  • What does it mean when iPhoto displays a warning sign with an exclamation point when you try to open a photo in your library?

What is iPhoto 11 trying to tell me when it displays a warning sign with an exclamation point in it when I try to open a photo in my library?  I'm corrupted file and that since there are many I may have a bad drive.  I have 2 time machine backups (one is off site) but its not clear to me if I can restore individual photos or whether it's worth even trying since ther are many.
Any thoughts from people who have experienced this would be much appreciated.

I rebuilt it using iPhoto Manager and that appears to have worked. I did the rebuild onto a different drive and I'm now working to determine if there is a problem the the external drive that held the corrupted library.

  • Exclamation point over thumbnail in iPhoto

When I click on a thumbnail to enlarge it, an exclamation point appears over it blacking the photo out. These are photos I have made and imported to iPhoto. How can I get rid of the exclamation point to edit the photos? Thanks for your help.

No, I do not remember doing anything in Finder having to do with iPhoto or photos.
I did try the re-build as you suggested but nothing was changed - I continue to get the ! when I click on a photo.
I do have another iPhoto Library in which I am working and clicking on a photo in that library enlarges it. (I the library I want to use with iPhoto Library Manager.)
So, I think I'll just trash the library that is giving me problems and build on the Library that is working. I have the original photos on disk and it will only take time to do the imports.
    Thanks, TD, for your help.
