Exclude folders in a search with smart folders

setting up a smart folder or doing a search, using the "kind", the only choice is "kind is". I would like to exclude folders. How could you do that? Or if I say kind is documents it finds text files but excludes Excel files. Basically I want everything but folders.

When you bring up the Find window, just leave kind as any, then in the "Search for:" box at the top type in your search term, and also add what you want to exclude with "NOT" and whatever it may be. Thus if I wanted to find all files containing "geranium" in the file name or content, I would enter this:
geranium NOT Folder
I would get all files with geranium in the file name, plus all html files mentioning geranium, as well as text files with the word in the content, but would not get any folders. If I wanted to also exclude certain other things I would arrange window in List view, click on the "Kind" column and note what other files are showing up that I'm not interested in. For instance, suppose I don't want aliases either. I would then amend my Search for field to exclude those as well:
geranium NOT Folder NOT alias
You can refine things to your heart's content using this method.

  • Setting up local folders with smart mailboxes?

I use Mail for my work email, and am constantly going over my quota - Is there any way to set up local folders and use smart mailboxes to automatically move emails from certain people off the server and onto my hard drive? thanks in advance.

You would not do this with Smart Mailboxes, as they are only the result of a search list, and don't actually cause any message to move. Instead, you would use ordinary Rules to do this, but would have to select all messages every so often, and then command to have the Rules applied, when done after the fact of receiving the message.
A Smart Mailbox might be a good way to group messages for your consideration, manually, to move to On My Mac mailboxes.

  • Exclude Folders from showing in Windows Explorer Search Results

When using Windows 7 Explorer search function, both folders and files are displayed in the results.  I need to have a way to see only the files/documents not the folders.  I still want the files in subfolders to be included, I just don't need
to see the folder name appear in the list as this makes the results much to long.  Is there any way to do this?

    That's quick :)

Just add a minus sign, that's it..

  • Feature Request: Tagging coupled with Smart Folders

Would love to see the next version of Safari add tagging, as has been mentioned here before, but more importantly I'd like to see Smart Folder capability added as well.
I'm a big fan of Smart Folders in Mail; makes it easy to file -- I just drop everything in my "Saved Mail" folder, then set up the Smart Folders as needed (e.g., "Client Mail", "Mom", "Amazon - Sold, Ship Now", etc.
Applying the same process to Safari bookmarks would be wonderful. For instance, let's say I have a bookmark for the plastic modeling website Starship Modeler (starshipmodeler.com); I could tag it with "Modeling" (obvious), "Shopping" (since it has a store), "Sci-Fi", and then even more specific tags like "Star Wars" or "2001 A Space Odyssey". I could then make a smart folder that would find bookmarks tagged only with "shopping" and "Star Wars", and it'd show up there. But it would also show up in my smart folder just for "modeling", etc.
Right now I have hundreds of bookmarks if not more. I've tried a number of tagging programs but none really fit the bill. Native tagging, along with smart folders, would make Safari far and ahead my favorite browser (which it already is, but more so, eh?).

  • Time Machine Feature Request: Rules to exclude Folders/Files

    Hi.
I think its important to have rules for excluding folders/files from tm-backup in the next version of OS X (Snow Leopard).
Example: "Do not backup Folders/files which name begins with a specified character + location is "desktop".
So i have a better control of which files are in the backup. For example temporary big files on my desktop.
    Best regards, Andre

Well, it's really no secret, macmatic , and the page I linked above derives from this one that contains many more feedback page links:

  • Time Machine creates backups from excluded folders. Tried everything

I configured TM to exclude some folders that I do not want it to backup. A few days ago, all of a sudden, it told me that there is not enough space on my backup disk (Airport Extreme with USB hard drive). I found out that it had deleted the old backups and tried to backup also the folders that I excluded.
    I already did:
    - deleted the entire backup hard disk using disk utility
    - deleted TM preferences
    - setup TM from scratch
    - Moved the excluded folders to other locations and renamed it (added the folders once again to the exclude list after that, of course)
    - repaired file permissions
    - repaired volume after having started the system from the 10.6. install DVD.
When I start the backup after resetting it, it shows at first a correct amount of data (approx. 90 GB, which fits the real amount of data that I want it to backup). But when it reaches 100% of the 90 GB after several hours, it does not stop: It continuously adds GB by GB to both values "90 GB of 90 GB copied" in the status window. The status bar keeps showing 100%. When I stop the backup manually and look into the sparsebundle, I find all the data that I excluded before in the TM preferenes.
I have no idea what to do now. I tried a new backup setup from scratch already three times.
P.S.: Im not new to OS X and TM. I have used TM for years in 10.5 without any problems. It seems that such problems occur after the upgrade to 10.6. BTW, I did a clean install of SL, not an update from 10.5.

    miflo wrote:
In the meantime I fixed the problem by re-installing the Combo update for 10.6.2. It then has been working for a few days.
But today, it deleted all my old backups and then told me that there is not enough space available. It would need approx. 150GB for about 10MB that I have "really" changed on the hard disk.
Since I have upgraded to SL, I only had problems, problems and problems. It's TM, it's the over-all performance, it's the stability of many applications... I cannot understand why Apple has not managed to fix these annoying bugs for so many months. Apple, what's going on there? Are there no researchers available for OSX since everyone is working on the iPhone?
First, you are not talking to Apple here. This is a user-to-user forum.
Second, several million folks are using Snow Leopard without significant problems. Whatever is going wrong on your Mac is not common. It is something in your setup. The fact that loading the "combo" update helped the TM problem is a good indication of that. Apparently, something in your installation of OSX got corrupted. The other problems you mention may have a similar cause.
It's not clear from your first post whether you did verify/repair disk (not permissions) on both your TM and internal HDs. If you didn't, do them both again.
If that doesn't help, I'd recommend reinstalling OSX from your SL disc, applying the "combo" again, then repairing permissions.
Your first post says you did a "clean" install. How did you get your data back onto your system?
The best way will probably be to go back to 10.5. I think it's the only solution that is available yet.
That's your call, of course, and not an easy transition after you've been on SL for a while.

  • Exclude folders/drives

I've installed itunes for my daughter ipod. It searches and includes ALL music files in ALL folders in ALL drives of my computer, there is a way to exclude folders and drives?
    Thank you.

no, that drive is excluded. how is the drive formatted? the drive needs to be formatted mac os extended in order for TM to be able to back it up. if it's formatted something else like FAT, TM will automatically exclude it.

  • Why Time machine don't exclude folders?

I use time capsule for backup, when i exclude some folder on time machine preferences this folders don't skip the backup, i have same problem with an usb hard drive.
I was formatted my Time capsule but the problem remains. I was deleted com.apple.TimeMachine.plist but nothing....
    I don't understand...

Same problem here. I can exclude folders on the root but not inside users' home. Things I've done:
    - multiple time machine full reset
    - os reinstall
    - create a new users from scratch.
    No way!
I have a macbook pro 2011 with Mac Os 10.6.7 (case insensitive installation).
I've tried to install 10.6.7 combo update but system refuses to do because not compatible.
During backup TM reaches the expected backup size and after it continues counting GBs over the expected size. If I don't stop the backup it reaches 220 GB despite I've excluded everything but the Desktop folder that has only some files.
    Log is following:

  • AppXray and exclude folders in BEA Workshop 3.2

    Hi,
I'm trying to exclude some folders in the AppXray validation
    step.
Well, my exluded folders are still taken into account...
I've added these folders in the exlude tabs of the
"validation -appxray" property of the project, but no effects.
    Do I miss something ?

    Hi Oliver,
    Thanks for clarifying the issue.
If the folders you are trying to exclude, contain java syntax error, they will continue to be displayed in the problems view. Adding them to AppXRay's excluded folders will not have any effect on them. AppXRay is restricted to JSP errors.
If the errors are in other projects which are part of the same workspace, you could right click the project and close them. If a project is closed, the errors will no longer be listed in the problems view.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't exclude folders from Time Machine backups

I am trying to exclude Folders from backups to preserve space.
Go into Time Machine preferences and Options - I can select + to Exclude Folders, and select a Folder, but on then selecting to Exclude nothing gets returned to the "Exclude these items from backups" form.
    Help!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mails are stored on ~/Library/Mail, being ~ your user folder. As you are running Snow Leopard, it's easy to exclude your mails from your Time Machine backup.
Open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add ~/Library/Mail to excluded items, so the next backup won't include mails. Note that you have to go to your user folder, in order to access to this directory

When I generate and then view the help, it looks perfect!  I changed the name of the project folder since the information is proprietary.  I have several pictures including the parent folder and the only 3 folders that are generated.  I cannot find the Webhelp output folder.  I think this is what you need to see.

  • Search with "Current Node + All Subfolders" not functioning correctly

    Hi,
We are having an issue with the search function of SCCM 2012 Admin Console. We have built multi-level folder structure to SCCM which matches our organizational unit structure in AD.
The issue occurs when trying to search with "Current Node + All Subfolders" option in a folder to get listing of all collections nested in the structure. As a result we get incomplete list of collections and majority of them are not showing
up. Sometimes the console even crashes when trying to do this kind of search. Note that this behaviour only occurs when searching inside a folder, not in the device collections root node.
We managed to trace the SQL query in the above situation from SMSProv.log, and it is as follows:
select  all SMS_Collection.SiteID,SMS_Collection.CollectionType,SMS_Collection.CollectionVariablesCount,SMS_Collection.CollectionComment,SMS_Collection.CurrentStatus,SMS_Collection.HasProvisionedMember,SMS_Collection.IncludeExcludeCollectionsCount,SMS_Collection.IsBuiltIn,SMS_Collection.IsReferenceCollection,SMS_Collection.LastChangeTime,SMS_Collection.LastMemberChangeTime,SMS_Collection.LastRefreshTime,SMS_Collection.LimitToCollectionID,SMS_Collection.LimitToCollectionName,SMS_Collection.LocalMemberCount,SMS_Collection.ResultClassName,SMS_Collection.MemberCount,SMS_Collection.MonitoringFlags,SMS_Collection.CollectionName,SMS_Collection.PowerConfigsCount,SMS_Collection.RefreshType,SMS_Collection.ServiceWindowsCount from vCollections AS SMS_Collection  where (SMS_Collection.SiteID
in (select  all Folder##Alias##810314.InstanceKey from vFolderMembers AS Folder##Alias##810314
    where (Folder##Alias##810314.ObjectTypeName = N'SMS_Collection_Device'
    AND Folder##Alias##810314.ContainerNodeID in
    (16777237,16777374,16777384,16777385,16777375,16777376,16777377,16777378)))
    AND SMS_Collection.CollectionType = 2) order by SMS_Collection.CollectionName
From this we noticed that not all ContainerNodeIDs are searched, but a list of only 8 ContainerNodeIDs. These ContainerNodeIDs remain the same if the search is done again in the same folder. The same behaviour repeats also in other folders with a different
    list of ContainerNodeIDs.
For clarification I'll attach a picture which shows our folder structure with ContainerNodeIDs and ParentContainerIDs. We have also marked the containers which were present in SQL statement. From this you can clearly see there should have been far more ContainerNodeIDs
than listed in the SQL query. Is this a bug in the admin console or could this be a problem with our site database? Is anyone else experiencing similar issues? We have written a custom
powershell script that reads containers from SMS_ObjectContainerNode WMI-class recursively and is able to return complete list of folders and their subfolders, so we assume that our site database and WMI on site server is functioning correctly.
We noticed this on CU2 (could have been present also earlier) and updating to CU3 did not fix the problem. Currently we are running SCCM 2012 SP1 CU3 with one primary site. All components besides distribution point is running on the site server. Distrubution
point is running on a separate server. Our SQL server is running on the site server.
    Best Regards,
    Juha-Matti

Sorry for the very long delay. I created the ticket in the autumn of last year and just received the final verdict to this issue.
Microsoft support said they were able to reproduce the problem and that they contacted the product group about this issue. It turns out that this behaviour is by design (wait, what?) and since it is by design there is nothing they
    can/will do about it.
So the only choice is to request a tailored customization for SCCM2012, which probably in this case (as it is by design) would cost.
I feel a bit puzzled: how can it be by design if it clearly does not work?

  • How to Embed a Text Frame Within a Text Frame with Smart Text Reflow

This is driving me nuts, and I've wasted hours searching exhaustively but can't seem to find the answer.
I've been working with this indesign file and cleaning it up really well.  I now have all the text flowing with smart text reflow.  There are two parts in the book that have columns of information, or tables.  The way it was originally done was having a text box placed inside the text box.  But unfortunately, whenever you add pages before or after, the text box won't follow with the text box it is inside.  I have tried grouping the two text boxes together, but this doesn't seem to work with Smart Text Reflow (since every page is based on the primary master). How do you embed a text frame inside another text frame that is based off the primary master?  I guess it would be like using the text frame as an object.
I included an image to help my explanation.
I even tried adding columns and then spannign the header part across, but this still doesn't flow with the rest of the text.

ANchor it into the other text fram, look in the help file. Keyword = Anchored Objects.

  • Mail: search and smart mailboxes stopped working

    Hi folks,
In mail the search and smart mailboxes have stopped working.  I have a hunch it's something to do with iCloud as my partner is now logged onto iCloud using iTunes etc. Can you help?

My accounts are POP. But I have managed to fix the problem. When you mentioned Spotlight, I went into System Preferences thinking I may had accidentally turn off emails as a search option in Spotlight. It was on, but I turned it OFF and then ON again, and now search works in mail as usual. And my Smart Mailboxes too.
    It's one of those things
    Thanks for your help
