Exclude iTunes rentals from backup

I'm looking for a way to exclude iTunes movie rentals from being backed up to my time capsule. I know that I can exclude directories, but I don't know the specific directory of rentals. Plus, I still want to backup my iTunes files, including purchased videos, just not the rentals.
Hopefully Apple will see this as a no brainer and provide some drill down capabilities in time machine to do some smarter excludes.
Any thoughts from the masses?

I'm looking for how to exclude podcasts from being backed up. I know how to keep individual podcasts from backing up; but I can't figure out how to exclude them as a category. Any ideas?
Thanks,

  • Is there any way to remove my hard drive with backup files in it from the exclude these items from backups???

I currently have a MacBook Air and a 1TB external hard drive, and I run my iPhoto Library from the EHD and as well have TM backup my computer to that same HD. The problem I have is that I don't have a backup of that HD which has all my photos and other media, so If the HD takes a crap I can be in big trouble.
So what I did is I purchased a new HD (My Cloud from WD) to back up my EHD. While setting everything up I ran into this
TM included the EHD in the "Exclude these items from backup" list and I can't touch them, and I tried everything. I later found this
The last sentence of #3 states why I can't.... Since the EHD has a backup file in it, it is excluded.
So..... Does anybody have any idea of a way around this? Would I have to restart everything and set it up different? Or just have a better and easier way of doing this?? I'll appreciate any help and suggestions.

What you need, is a dedicated image restauration filter that recognized the regular frequency pattern superimposed onto the prints. You can do this in advanced Image processing packages that let you compute the fourier transform of the image and then suppress or attanuate the frequency bands of the artefact with a band-stop filter.
But neither Aperture nor PhotoShop have this kind of filter. In Aperture and Photoshop you can only soften the effect by blurring and then exporting a smaller version of the image.
The algorithm that your scanner uses is probably the best that can be done, even if the resolution is only 100 dpi.
Do you still have the negatives? Scanning the negatives at a high resolution may give you better results.

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • How to exclude tablespace UNDOTBS1 from backup in OEM

I use OEM to backup our database (11.2 on Redhat 2.6.18-92.el5 ). It take quite a bit time and disk space (32gb) to backup the UNDOTBS1 table space. I do not think that we need undo tablespace for a recovery. If this is correct how can I excludeit from the backup. OEM allow to exclude data tablespace from backup but not UNDOTBS1.
    Thanks

To create a physical standby you need the entire database. Not just parts of it. The only thing at the standby system that will be different is the controlfile (it will be a standby controlfile) and the spfile. Everything else will be exactly the same. Locations of the files can differ of course if you set the appropriate parameters.
Please make sure you have read Chapter 3 "http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e10700/create_ps.htm#i63561" of the Data Guard Concepts and Administration manual.
You can use the RMAN qualifier FROM ACTIVE DATABASE to the DUPLICATE FOR STANDBY command to avoid the need for interim storage for the backup. That method streams the backup from the Primary directly into the standby server. Refer to Chapter 2 of our book "Oracle Data Guard 11g Handbook (http://www.amazon.com/Oracle-Guard-Handbook-Osborne-ORACLE/dp/0071621113)" for details.
Since you are using OEM, make sure you are using 10.2.0.4/5 Grid Control. The Data Guard standby creation wizard has a new option to use this RMAN option. It is the first selection on the type of backup page. (To get to the DG pages select your Primary database from the Database Targets page and then select the Availability tab, and then under Data Guard select the Add Standby Database link).
As for block change tracking, since we all thought you were just doing a backup and did not realize you were trying to create standby BCT can help make it faster. However it does not apply in this case.

  • Time machine "Exclude these items from backups" keeps re-adding my external drive

I have several external hard drives that contain data I wish to backup.  With Lion I had them removed from the "Exclude these items from backups" list and all was well.
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have been not so lucky.  I was able to keep one out of the list by turning off Time Machine, removing the disk from the list of items to exclude from backup, then turning Time Machine back on.  I have one external drive, however, that will not remove.  The steps I'md oing are:
    Open Options under Time Machine
Select "FreeAgent" and click on the minus sign and it dissapears from the list.
    Click Save
Open Options again and "FreeAgent" is back in the list.
If I turn off Time Machine and do these steps it still goes back in.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    Thanks

Time Machine usually won't show a drive that's not conneted in that list.
Can you remove it from the list while it's connected?
If so, but it still comes back, the preferences file (where that's kept) may be damaged.  Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Is it possible to retrieve a backup that is not available on the drop-down bar in iTunes "restore from backup"?

I was attempting to sync my phone so that I could get all of my pictures on the computer to free up some space on my phone. I have done this several times before with no problems. An error message popped up informing me that I needed to update my phone before I could sync my info. During the update, an error occured again so I tried to eject the device so that I could worry about it another day. After ejecting the phone, it kept showing on the display that it was still connected to itunes. I couldnt turn the phone off or anything, it was just frozen there. So, I hooked it back up to the computer and it prompted me to do an update on itunes to fix the problem. After updating itunes it said that i should restore the phone to it's original settings and then restore from backup. It performed a backup when I initially plugged the phone in the first time. After deleting everything off of my phone, I then attempted to restore from backup but got an error message saying that there was not enough free space on my device for me to restore my info...but I had just taken it off the phone. I stepped away from the computer for a moment and when I got back, it had performed another backup of my basically blank device. Now the only backups that I can pull up on itunes are from after everything was deleted from my phone. All of my information is gone. I know this doesn't really make any sense, but I have no idea how else to word it or how to fix it. PLEASE help! I have several pictures of my newborn son and pictures and videos of my husband's recovery process from a severe brain injury.

Under the PLAN screen, right click on the page you want to exclude from your menu list, navigate to Menu Options, and select Exclude Page From Menus.

  • How to restore iTunes library from backup?

A large percentage of my iTunes songs have become corrupted. (Seemed to happen when I installed 7.3) Luckily I have a recent backup of my hard drive, so I want to reinstall the library.
What are the steps to take? Do I simply delete my old iTunes library folders and copy the "good" folders in their place? Or do I need to restore the iTunes database, prefs, etc.?

  • Restoring iTunes media from backup on network disk.

I backed up my iTunes media from my Powerbook G4 to a hard disk on a PC over my home network. Recently, my Powerbook was stolen and I've now replaced it with a MacBook Pro. How do I restore my iTunes media to the MacBook? iTunes wants me to insert a disc prior to restoring from backup.
    Thanks!

I figured this one out myself! I copied the backup to my MacBook, then found the right folder in the backup to drag into my new iTunes folder. It just took a couple of minutes and I was up and running.

  • Restored iTunes Library from backup, but Missing Artwork

    Hello
I had to reinstall iTunes 8. Fortunately, I had a clone of my HDD from just the day before. After the iTunes reinstallation, I replaced the iTunes Library and iTunes Music Library.xml files with my back up versions. Once I opened iTunes it took its time rebuilding the Library with the result being my ratings, play counts, and lyrics all where they were supposed to be. I am happy!
However, while that metadata was good, I noticed that I was missing artwork for a lot of the music files. It so happens that artwork was present in the iTunes Store purchased music, and in the files that had the artwork embedded via drag and drop (i.e., art was part of actual song file). On the other hand, every file that originally had images via Get Album Artwork was not referencing the Album Artwork folder (i.e., art not part of actual song file but referenced .itc files). So, no artwork.
How do I get that artwork back? All the images are still in the Album Artwork folder, restored from my backup, but I cannot find a way to make itunes reference them again! Why does the Library.xml restore all the iTunes-specific information for a track except the artwork?
Why do I not just use the Get Album Artwork feature again, you may be thinking? Because for most of the songs iTunes had the ID3 tag info wrong. After importing the music and matching the track names to iTunes Store to grab the artwork, I modified the ID3 info to more correctly reflect the artist, album, and track names. To rename the files to match iTunes Store, and then name them back to how I like them will take days.
So.. am I out of luck? Is there a way to actually backup iTunes information so that songs keep their references to the .itc files in the Album Artwork folder?
I thank you for your time reading this.
    cheers!

  • Exclude FileVaults sparsebundle from backup

    Hello,
I'm trying to configure Time Machine to backup my Mac on system level without my home folder. The problem is, that my home folder is encrypted via FileVault and regardless of what I'm doing, Time Machine tries to backup FileVault's sparsebundle every time I logging me out. I have tried to add "/Users" or "/Users/.<username>" to the exclude list or edit Time Machine's configuration file manually but nothing helps.
How can I prevent Time Machine from backing up this file?
    Thanks and greets,

My system files are the only one I really need to backup and I want to use the build in tool for this purpose. But even if I exclude my home directory from the backup in TM settings, at logout it really backups the FV sparse bundle and I haven't found a way to stopping it from doing that.
why do you think that? how did you check? it certainly should not do that. it doesn't back up the sparse bundle when I test it.
The backup takes a very long time
    that doesn't mean anything
and the result is big sparse image file in the backup
and that does not mean anything either. it simply reuses the old existing backup of the sparse bundle and hard links to that. the only true test is to delete all backups of the sparse bundle. then log in/out of the filevaulted account and see if the sparse bundle is really being backed up. my bet it isn't.
deleting backups should ONLY be done from TM interface. enter TM, scroll back in time and select the sparse bundle in any backup. then click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select "delete all backups of ..."

  • How to  restore ITunes Library from Backup hard drive?

My computer crashed. I restored it -- but ITunes was wiped clean. I have all my music files and ITunes Library backed up on an external hard drive. How do I get the library from the external drive back to the computer with playlists, artwork and all intact? I guess it is more complex than just dragging the file labled library into ITunes becuase the computer won't let me do that. When I go to the original songs they are all individually in folders accorging to the artist and album -- that will take days to copy each album 1 by 1 -- I have 3,700 songs.

What you first need to do is Place the music it the Location they was in before you restored. If you had songs on the C drive in My Music folder, place them there. If iTunes was reading the music from the external, not much you have to do sincve there already there.
Now with the Library file you have to make iTUnes take the file and recreate it, this is explained here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93313

  • HD failure.  Want to restore iTunes library from backup

The hard drive containing my music died. Fortunately, I have a (manual) backup of all the songs/artists on another hard drive. I also have a backup of the iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library files.
I moved the xml and library files to my Music folder. I attached the backup hard drive and changed the location of my library in iTunes preferences to look for my songs there. I hit Consolidate. All the songs show up in the library, but a load of them have the dreaded exclamation point and have no link.
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks so much for any help!

That setting in Prefs tells iTunes where to put music when you import...not where to find your library. Try launching iTunes while holding down the option key, then tell it where to find the library.

  • ITunes rental from ipad to Apple TV

I just downloaded a movie on my ipad. I see it in rentals in iTunes but can not get it on my Apple TV. I restarted both devices. Restarted iTunes. Home Sharing is turned on. I went to computers on Apple TV and even selected rentals. It can not find it. Please help!

If you want to view a rental on Apple TV you need to rent directly or via computer. Home-sharing only applies to content on your computer

  • Trying to restore ipod from one that died. But restore from backup is greyed out in the itunes menu.

I have latest version of itunes on Mavericks, a brand new ipod nano, and I am trying to restore my old dead ipod from its last backup onto the new ipod. The previous (dead) ipod was inherited from my daughter and is called "Kim's ipod" and I didn't get the option to initialise with the same name when I first connected it to itunes. I suspect that might be the problem.
Restoring from backup is greyed out in the file menu.
This strikes me as a situation that shouldn't be too uncommon - I'm wondering what I am missing.
    - How to restore a new ipod from the backup of a new one
    - Why is the restore from backup option greyed out
    - Or, how to reinitialise the ipod so that the new one can have the same name as the old one in order to back it up.
Or anything else that I might have missed. FYIY the new ipod is NOT in recovery mode.

Hmm.  I came to realise iTune Match had downgraded 38 of my tracks, which I'd ripped from my own CDs long ago, with 256kbps versions.  I do have backup for the tracks, so I'd like to delete these 38 tracks (I've made a Smart playlist of them), deleting them from iCloud too; then with Match turned off, recover my originals (Add to Library) from an old Mac.
Can't do it!  As Richard Tench said at the top, from 27 July 2011, Edit > Delete is permanently grayed out if you have opted for iT Match.  And for me on iTunes 10.6.3 (Lion 10.7.4), that's not all:  Edit > Cut and Cmd-x both just produce the Bonk sound.  My Macbook keyboard has no Del key either.
But all the above are only true with Match active.  Store > Turn Off iTunes Match will ungrey Edit > Delete (& fn-bksp etc I imagine).  So I would then be able to delete the tracks locally.  But of course, if you turn off iT Match you can delete all you like locally, but they will still exist in iCloud, and if I turn on iT Match again, the lower-grade 256kbps ones will come down from the clouds to replace my CD-ripped ones again!  Won't they?
Is that right?  Is there any way to exclude these 38 tracks (out of ~6500) from iTunes Match so I can keep my better quality CD-ripped ones?  (Other than using Alt-Launch & creating a separate iTunes fileset for the 38 tracks - as you might have guessed, some of them fall right in the middle of albums.)   Help!
