Exclude stacked photos in a Smart Album?

Hi all,
Is there a way to exclude photos that are stacked in a Smart Album?
I want to duplicate images (new version) and rotate the duplicates.  Then, I want to stack the two images.  In this project, there are already images that have been "processed" and are already in stacks.  I would like to remove the "clutter" as I do this processing.  Yes, I can close all stacks but it still leaves the one image per stack.  Only a number in the preview tells me it is a stack.  Seems there should be some match criteria like "in stack" and "not in stack" that allows me to indentify if am image is stacked or not.  "Is stack pick" and "Is not stack pick" criteria would be nice as well.
In the meantime, I can go through and flag the images I want to work on.  Then use a smart album to only show flagged images.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks & Enjoy life!
Steven

Hello Steven,
hmm, the additional rules you want would be nice to have,  but the only thing we have is the "stack picks only" option.
If you define a smart album there is a flag you can set ( in the top row of the HUD) that lets you define, if you only want stack picks in your album.

  • Is there a way to display the number of pictures or photos in a smart album

when I look at my project view on the left, all of the projects or folders show the number of photos that are in them at a glance. However, on my smart albums, it just shows the looking glass which you can click on to edit the properties. Is there any way for aperture to show the number of photos in a smart album without having to open the smart album and count? Thanks!

No. But when you click on them, the number of images they contain will be at the bottom of the Browser screen and in Split View just above the bar separating the Viewer from the thumbnails.

  • How to arrange photos in a smart album

I have a hundred or so pics put into the library. I then created smart albums based on keywords but the pics are out of order and need to be arranged. It won't let me. It will be difficult to just go into the library and do it since I wwill be looking at pics from all categories. Suggestions? Thanks,

You can change the order with the different View options, but you can't manually arrange items in a Smart Album. Select all photos in the smart album and copy them into a regular album, where you can manually rearrange them.

  • A single photo in Aperture smart album shows multiple times on Apple TV2.

Sometimes a random photo in my Aperture smart albums displays on my ATV2 multiple times..can I fix this? For example, currently a single picture shows up on the Apple TV in the photos taken "in the past week" smart album 124 times, and the same picture shows up in the "in the past month" smart album 15 times.
When I double check the picture in the original smart album on the computer, it appears correctly, i.e. only one time.
    Suggestions?

I'm having the same problem.  I deleted all the photos in the photostream then tried to drag a couple new ones in to see if they'd synch.  Nothing is happening.  I recently installed aperture (have about 125 gb in the library).  If anyone has an idea what to do, i'm open to try something.

  • Can you manually add photos to a Smart Album?

I have created Smart Albums using faces.  IE one for my daughter.  I have some other pictures I want to put in the album that I want in her album but don't have a face that is hers.  It wont let me drag onto it.  Help!

That is correct - smart albums are automatic and photos are added or removed based on meeting the set criteria - one way to do it is to add a keyword for thos photos and include that keyword as ann optional criteria for the smart album

  • Photo loss from a project when creating a smart album

Running Aperture 3.4.3 on iMac with OS X 10.7.5. Photos stored on internal drive. After creating two smart albums based on a date range, one with keywords and one with ratings, some, but not all, of the photos that appeared in the smart albums disappeared from the original projects (each project contains photos from a single day). One of the original projects still notes 454 photos under its thumbnail, but when opened only displays 308 photos. The project path of the photos in the smart album still references the correct project. I tried deleting the smart album but the photos did not immediately reappear in the correct project so I undid the delete. I tried closing and reopening Aperture. I tried system restart. No luck. Reading the Aperture help/manual suggests that the photos should remain in the original project.

First: Make sure the Browser Filter is set to "Showing All" (or "Unrated or Better") when the Project is selected.

  • Deleting photos from main library while in Smart Album.

anyone know of a key sequence to delete a photo from the library when viewing the photo in a smart album?
I have over 1700 photos. Sometimes I want to delete all photos within a smart album but you can not do that by just selecting delete; that only deletes it from the album and not the library. as of right now the easies way I have found to do this is to perform a batch change and rename all files the same name, then perform a search within the main library for those files and then delete them. I refuse to think Apple didn't think about creating a "delete from main library" shortcut.

Option Command Delete works for Smart albums also. At least that is what it says in the iPhoto Help/iPhoto keyboard shortcuts in the menu bar.

  • Can't delete photos in smart album view

Assuming we all know how smart albums work, let's jump to why I can't delete a photo from a smart album. In all other views, it seems, I can delete images. When I'm scanning through 500 pictures tagged with Christmas in my Christmas Smart Album and come across one I want to delete, I can't do so. What's worse, going back to Photos view and trying to find that picture to delete it is almost impossible when you're looking through a library of 6,000 images.
Am I missing something? Do I really have to find a work around for this? Why has Apple left out DELETE from Smart Albums?

To delete a photo that's in a smart album you need to use the CommandOptionDelete key combination to move it to the trash. If you just want to remove the photo from the album you will need to change on that photo the feature that the smart album is set to look for.

  • Select a photo in smart album then find it in library?

I have recently moved from iPhoto '09 to iPhoto 11. Before, if I found a photo in a smart album that I wanted to see in context (in its event, or in the full library), I could select that photo and then switch to the library (or other album/events/folder, etc) and it would still be selected. I couldn't necessarily find it, but by going to full screen and then out of it, I would jump to my selected photo (or photos). Now I can't find a way to do anything similar. Anyone got a tip/trick for doing this in iPhoto 11?
Here's an example of how it's useful:
I have a smart album of photos with no Place associated. I see one photo in there but I'm not sure where to place it. I would like to jump to its event to see which others it was taken with. (Let's assume, for now, that all the others in the event were given Places, so they aren't in the smart album together.)
Thanks in advance for any tips!
    -Michael

    This is what Larry is referring to;
1  - select the image in the smart album and use the Show Event option.
2 - Check the Event name when you're taken to the Event with the photo
3 - click on the All Events button at the top and you'll go to the Event in the Event mode as follows:
    Pretty straight forward.

  • Smart Albums don't display in Photos App, only when edit Contacts Photo

I created a Smart Photo Album on my Macbook Pro and synced it to my iPhone4. When I open the Photos App, the smart album isn't listed but when I edit a Contact's photo by clicking on the Choose Photo button, the Smart Album is listed along with all the other albums.
But when I just go to the Photos App on it's own, the Smart Album is still not there.
    Anyone have a similar problem?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That sounds like an iPhoto or iPhone issue and not an iWeb one. Post your question in the Installing and using iPhoto '09 or iPhone forum.

  • Duplicating photo in smart album

Why can't I duplicate a photo that is in a smart album, but I can duplicate in any other album? Is there a way to duplicate in a smart album so that I can do different editing to same photo?

A smart album is simply a list of photos that match the ablum criteria - if you want to duplicate select it, show event and do to the event and duplicate there

  • Can't delete photos while viewing a smart album

How come iPhoto won't let me delete images that are being displayed in a smart album? This is very frustrating!

Ok, I tried that with no success.
    1. flagged some ugly photos in a smart album
    2. pressed alt key
    3. pressed apple key
    4. pressed delete key
    Nothing happens. Ugh!
Once again - that is not what I suggested - using different key combinations than specified will not work
flag the photos you want to delete and _*depress the control and command keys and press delete to delete all flagged photos*_
    1 - flag photos
2 - depress the control key (The option - alt - key is not involved or mentioned)
3 - depress the command (apple) key
4 - press the delete key
This will delete all flagged photos

  • Aperture:  photos not importing in numerical order with Smart Album recently, Aperture:  photos not importing in numerical order with Smart Album recently

Aperture 2.1.4 has imported my digital photos numerically in Smart Albums perfectly till just recently.  Can anyone tell me what is happening?  Thank you.

The only thing worked was when I created a new Aperture library with only the projects I want. This brough me to think it maybe something to do with the size of my current library, which currently host over 10,000 photos, or there is something else wrong with my library?
Aperture is designed for really big libraries, so the size should not matter. But since you can sync a new library, I suspect, that your Aperture library may need repairing. Did you have an Aperture crash, that may have left your library in an inconsistent state?
Try the Aperture Library First Aid Tools on your main library: You can launch the "Library First Aid" by holding down the ⌥⌘-combination, when launching Aperture, see:
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library

  • Smart Album's jumping around after edits

    Hello,
I'm working on organizing my large library of images and I've created a few simple smart albums to group images by date so that it is easier for me to categorize them. These can be rather large smart albums - 1,000 - 2,000 images.
Everything works fine until I start making edits to the images in the smart album. When I do this, the smart album appears to reload and it frequently "jumps" to a different part of the album. For example, about on image 500 or so of a 1,200 image Smart album, I was going through and making stacks. After each stack was created the smart album view would "jump" back up to image 250 or so - and I would have to scroll back down to me previous location in the photo list.
I checked the sort order to make sure I wasn't messing that up. I was using image date and the stack operations I was performing didn't substantially alter the order of images by their dates.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?
    -Steve G

One thing to check on if your library is large. When you open your smart album, let it settle for a little bit as the library is queried to match images to your smart search criteria. It is not the fastest operation it does. Check for no spinning wheels in the lower control bar and check the Task List (under window) is empty of work.
I have noticed an Image Manager task show-up in the Task List on occasion, seemingly umprompted and i let that end before i do more work as it seriously bogs-down its work.
Try letting it settle a few mins (depending on your library size).
