Excluding email from download

My email provider (orange) uses one username to which email addresses are attached. Its goes something like this:
[email protected]
[email protected]
On windows this was not a problem as I could set up a rule that said do not download from server. This meant on my pc I would not receive my wifes emails and vice versa.
However, on the mac there are only appears to be rules to move to a different folder. This isnt any good as if for example I log on first, I would still download my wifes email onto my mac.
Can any one suggest anything I can do (other than getting a new email address)
Thanks,

On windows this was not a problem
Are you saying that it is a problem on the Mac, or that you think it will be a problem on the Mac? 'Cos my understanding is that when you connect to a mail server such as Orange's it is the email address that determines what email is visible, not the username. The POP dialog passes your email address ([email protected]) during the authentication phase, not just the domain (username.orange.co.uk).

Hi,
You can disable your mail account on your iPhone. Go in Settings > Mail, Contacts and Calenders > [Select your mail account] and disable Mail.

• Any way I can stop 9,000 eMails from downloading?

I did not know if this was an iMac desktop question or an iCloud question.
I'm quite the oldster amateur.
Please advise if there is a better Community for this to be in,
and I will try to move it (if that can be done).
I have an iCloud account.
But hardly ever go there.
I "do" all my eMail from my "Mail" application on my iMac desktop computer, running OSX 10.7.5
Typically when I open Mail, I'll see a ittle activity window activate in the lower left corner of Mail,
saying something like "Downloading 1 of 4 Messages" or something like that. I get very little mail.
Maybe it will show an activity "bar" for just a second or two,
Tonight, I opened Mail on my desktop, the little activity window started up,
and it said something like "Downloading 103 of 9,669 Messages"
WHAT!?!?!
I clicked a little "x" in the activity window, then CLOSED the Mail application.
a) I've had this computer for years, with iCloud and using the Mail app.
Same mail address, same computing habits.
Have probably averaged 8 or 10 spam or nuisance eMails a YEAR.
What the **** happened?
b) What can I do, anything?, to keep them from downloading onto my computer?
If I go onlilne to iCloud will they already be there, waiting for my Mail app to download them to my computer?
Andy help advice GREATLY appreciated.

I'm letting my two friends use my Apple ID
Why?
Let them create their own.
Change your AppleID password and don't give it to your friends.

• How can I stop all of my old emails from downloading to my new iphone?

When I upgraded to iphone 4S a few years ago, hundreds and hundreds of old emails suddenly downloaded to my iphone, and I couldn't stop it. I can't remember how I resolved the problem then -- but it is happening again with my new iphone 6. My badge is showing 1,000 new emails. How to I correct this?

Move your profile to that drive.
See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb

So the .ini file might read:
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=E:\Z - THUNDERBIRD\Profiles
Is that correct for location of:
E:\Z - THUNDERBIRD\Profiles

• How can I stop thousands of emails from downloading to my iPhone 5 - ios7 problem.

Like many others I am very very unhappy that I can no longer limit emails. Despite marking the thousands now in my inbos as READ or deleting all that happens it that thousands more seem to download! HELP? (Yes, I am going back to individual servers in my webmail to delete or move emails so that hopefully there won't be any or very few to keep downloading.) My data limit on vodaphone must be on red alert.
I sent feedback to APPLE as suggested. Is there any sign that anyone from Apple has acknowledged this serious issue?

• How to stop 30,000 emails from downloading?

I had to reset my Mail, and now every single email in the last year is downloading onto my hard drive. Thank GOD I cleaned 10 gigs off it last night or it would have crashed by now. So far I think I'm up to 14 gigs of maiil larding up my hard drive, and there is no end in sight. I tried to set a rule, moving everything 90 days old or older to an archive on the server. Got an arror message that 9,700 or so messages couldn't be moved. I think I just ran out of space. Tried to select them all and delete them as they came in. Now it says, 0 messages, 7,305 unread, and the little import bar says downloading 23,000 out of 25,000 emails, and both those numbers keep growing.
I don't want to have to delete every single email on the server. There's stuff in there I still need, and I want to be able to run a search term for it, and once a year or so I move it all off to a hard drive and start fresh.
In the old days, I'd just go into my mail folder in my library and clean all the mail folders out. But now I don't even see a mial folder in my library, and when I run a query for .emix, all the mail that pops up shows it resting simply in mail, not in a library. My avaialble gigs are steadily decining, and the computer that was fast this morning is now slow again.
IS THERE A WAY TO HALT THIS DOWNLOAD WITHOUT HAVING TO DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE SERVER??? And how do I get this mail off my machine?????
Thanks in advance!!!

I seem to have figured out one way to do this: (1) I paused all downloads from the ATV, (2) downloaded all the files through iTunes onto my iMac, (3) shutdown and restarted my ATV by unplugging it from the mains supply. When I checked the Download menu on the ATV the list of files to be downloaded was empty.

• Email- My email keeps downloading old email long ago deleted by my computer, but I phone now has 1,300 plus email, and no way to delete in bulk. how can i dbulk delete and stop old emails from downloading. i use gmail.

This is a tough way to get help using the Iphone pushing us onto each other as users to do thier support work. !
My email is ging me fits , as it downloads so many old old email i do not want to use it to get email/

Sounds like you have your computer checking a POP account and your computer thus gets copies from the server and you don't have your comptuer set to delete from server once downloaded/deleted thus they are still on the server. Thus when your phone checks the server they are there. POP accounts were never intended for this mobile age.

• Cant stop emails from downloading iPhone 3G

I just got my 3g not to long ago. However, im having some issues with emails.
I have it set to fetch manually, have push turned off.
I want to be able to download my emails ONLY if i choose. I dont want it to push to my phone. I have tried everything, but no matter what, my emails will continue to download throughout the day. Its random times too.
I have tried a Reset, please dont ask again..working on my 4th already.
Is there some setting im missing? IM sure i got it all...a few different places.
I just dont understand why you dont have a send and receive button for each email account.

Jailbroken phones can run apps in background, among other things. So mail could run at the same time with other apps. When phones do odd things that most people don't see the first thought is that the phone isn't normal.
I tried to duplicate the issue you posted. I sent an email to a POP3 account, then opened the brown Contacts icon. The phone did not retrieve the email.
I then sent an email to an IMAP account on the phone, and opened Contacts. Again, the phone did not retrieve the email.
Next I sent an email to an Exchange push account I have on the iPhone. This time the badge on the mail app showed 1 message, which is what I would expect. I again opened Contacts and the phone did not retrieve any email.
Finally, I opened the mail app. The POP and IMAP messages were downloaded after I opened mail, not before. The Exchange push message was already there.
So I don't see why your phone is acting differently. All I can suggest at this point is to do a Restore as a new phone, then recreated your email accounts if you are sure push, notifications, and Fetch are all off.

• How do I stop Mountain Lion Mail from downloading emails?

I create html newsletter emails for a church organization using a combination of Dreamweaver, Safari and Apple Mail. Since I moved to Mountain Lion, however, I have an Apple Mail problem.
Our organization uses an AOL email address. Under Lion and previous OS's, I was able to create the organization's account in Apple Mail, unclick "Include when automatically checking for new messages" in Mail Preferences, click "Enable this account" in Mail Preferences, and be able to send the finished email without routinely downloading all the emails from the organization's AOL inbox. Although I've followed this same procedure in Mountain Lion Mail, the app still insists on downloading their emails!! Is there any other switch to shut it off?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks. Unfortunately, I have several email accounts in Mail. 'Sorry, I didn't indicate this before. Prior to Mountain Lion, I was able to set Mail to automatically download email for all accounts except the organization's. Although the "Include when automatically..." checkbox in the organization's specific account preferences seems to provide this control in ML ... it doesn't

I add my comcast email to the mail on a iMac running Maverick. It downloads all my emails from there. How do i get my email to delete of the the server

Go to Mail Preferences>Accounts, click the '+' button below the list of accounts and insert the settings, username and password as instructed. Some account types can be set up automatically as soon as Mail knows the emails address (because the server settings are built in), in other cases you will have to get them from your ISP.

• Mail 3.6 downloads multiple copies of emails from my pop account

Since I auto-upgraded to Mail 3.6, Mail is downloading multiple copies of email from my pop mail account. This did not happen before and I haven't changed any of the mail settings. I have read discussions about a similar problem with an earlier version of Mail and the solution seemed to be deleting some file linked to Mail so it could be rebuilt, but I can't find such a file on my system that I could try deleting.
It may matter that I am not 'strictly' supposed to be using os x 10.5.8 on my powerbook G4 (according to what is said on the packet).
Help please!

@ Tokyodj
Thanks very much for posting this. I was having slightly different issues than the people above - only one of my two POP accounts was being constantly picked up, and I had hundreds of versions of each email... strangely, even after I went to the (Yahoo) account and deleted all the emails out of there. Your solution worked perfectly.
Thanks again!

• My iPhone 5 suddenly started re-downloading all previously deleted emails from my POP accounts

Yesterday, my iPhone 5 started re-downloading all previously deleted emails from my POP email accounts. I use the native Mail app and have three POP emails set up on my phone. The number of messages downloaded across all of them is over 1,000 so far and date back over several months. One of these is a Yahoo account, the others are work email accounts provided by two different hosting companies. I have not changed anything on any of these three accounts at the server/hosting level. I also run an IMAP account on my phone, which has not been affected, so this is obviously a POP-only issue. I started to delete the messages only to discover that older messages were downloaded in their place. There appears to be a cap of 250 messages downloaded at a time, but there's no way to change this in the phone's settings (this used to be a feature, but disappeared some time ago).
I'm on iOS8.3 (upgraded a month ago with no affect on email). I have not changed any of my phone's email settings, so I don't understand why this has happened out of the blue. I have checked the phone's email settings and there doesn't seem to be a way to limit the number of messages downloaded.
Does anyone know:
a. why this has happened, and
b. how I get it to stop?
Thanks!

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

• I can no longer send or respond to email from my Firefox browser. I closed and sent from Internet explorer and it works fine. What changed? The only thing different this morning, I downloaded Adobe uprade?

Question
I can no longer send or respond to email from my Firefox browser. I closed and sent from Internet explorer and it works fine. What changed? The only thing different this morning, I downloaded Adobe uprade?

I had this hotmail issue myself a while back. I Googled, scanned MS website, scanned MSN website, visited forums, couldn't figure it out. I tried Firefox and Opera and even changed the Opera mask setting from Opera to Internet Explorer. Nothing worked. My best guess was that I was signing on (with the new MSN Live as opposed to MSN Hotmail - the OLD interface) with the "Remember me on this computer?" box checked. I now make sure it is un-checked (which is not the default) and hotmail lets me in.
Not exactly sure if that is the real remedy, but thot I'd throw the story your way just in case...
