Excluding items crashes prefs

Hi--
I'm trying to se up my new iMac with my existing Time Capsule.  Because most of my music (and videos) are already on the TIme Capsule from another Mac, I'd like to exclude those items, but when I try to add items to exclude, nothing happens except that System Preferences hangs and I have to force quit.  The invidual items don't show up in the list.  I've done "select all" for the music, not wanting to select each of the hundreds of songs one by one.
Any suggestions?  Should I just go to cloud and forget about the whole thing?
Thanks for any help,
Michelle

Do you mean another Mac backing-up to it, or have you put it there separately (ie, outside any backups)?
I've done "select all" for the music, not wanting to select each of the hundreds of songs one by one.
If you mean you got a list of all the music, then used Cmd-A to select it all, how many items are you talking about?  It's not really set up for a huge list of items -- it may just be too large to handle.  For most things, you can exclude a few items, or the folder(s) containg them.
If so, can you estimate roughly how many files you have, and how many or what percentage you want to exclude?
when I try to add items to exclude, nothing happens except that System Preferences hangs and I have to force quit.
Unless you have a huge list, that sounds like the preferences file (where OSX keeps the exclusions, etc.), is corrupted.  Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Time Machine has been excluding items for hours... and counting!

I have been using time capsule for several years now. But today I brought a new hard drive to use with Time Machine. It's a Western Digital My Book Network drive.
Plugged it in selected the new disk and started to back up. For hours now it has been 'Excluding items..'. It has apparently excluded over 5 million items! Why is it doing this?
I've checked the list of files to exclude and it's just set to exclude the desktop and the Downloads folder.
I don't understand why it has been excluding items so long. Nothing had been copied to the external disk yet. If anyone could help me I'd be much apreciative!
    Thanks, George!

Well now I have this new hard drive
You may avoid some confusion and/or problems by not calling it that. It's a +Network Attached Storage+ (NAS) device, or +network drive.+ Yes, it contains a hard drive, but OSX handles it very differently for many purposes. You've already seen that you can't format it via Disk Utility, for example.
I'd rather not have erase the whole disk and put the wanted data back onto it.
If you can copy that 50GB elsewhere temporarily, erase the drive, then copy it back, that may be much faster and easier than deleting the Backups.backupdb folder. It contains at least several hundred thousand, perhaps over a million items, that OSX must delete one at a time. It may also have permissions or other problems.
Erasing, however, takes only a few moments.
This is why we recommend giving Time Machine its own, exclusive space. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Are you putting other things on the network drive? If so, you may have problems there, too, as Time Machine will eventually use all the empty space available to it.
Those backups will be inside a rather odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ If you're really on Leopard, as per your signature, you can limit the maximum size of the sparse bundle, per #A8 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
But since you've posted in the +Snow Leopard+ Time Machine forum, if you're on 10.6.3 or later, that won't "stick," so you may want to see if you can partition the network drive via WD's software (another thing you can't do on a network drive via +Disk Utility,+ unfortunately).

  • Time Machine excluding items....

    Hi,
Newly installed Server 10.6.6 Mac Pro.
When enabling Time Machine to backup the boot drive onto a 2nd internal drive it starts, and then starts "excluding items" and backs up only 40MB in the end while there's over 130GB of stuff to back up. There are no folders set to be excluded, the TM drive is newly formatted and empty.
Re-added the drive through system preferences, reset spotlight, trashed the preferences... everything we tried has failed. Any thoughts on this ?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    Hi
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/ServerAdminv10.6.pdf
Pages 36, 37 and 155 onwards. Time Machine is not really a 'backup' solution for OSX Server itself as such, especially if dealing with Mail and Open Directory Databases amongst others. It can also cause lock ups for clients accessing and changing data in configured share points although your mileage may vary. It's actually OK as a Time Machine destination for client workstations.

  • Time Machine ignoring excluded items (performing full backup)

    Hi.
I started having problems with Time Machine recently.
My macbook hard drive has 250 GB, 80 GB free. In the Time Machine preference pane options I have selected a couple of folders so that an "estimated full backup" is 52.9 GB. When I'm running TM it tries to backup the full drive (160GB) ignoring the folders I chose to exclude.
I have verified and repaired both my main hard drive and the external drive used for Time Machine.
The log in the console initially says that it is going to backup 44GB and then it continues copying more data:

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
We have seen this on rare occasions.
Start by Repairing your Time Machine drive and verifying your internal HD, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
Also do a "full reset" of Time Machine via #A4 there.
If that doesn't help, there's probably something corrupted in OSX.
You'll need to reinstall it from your Snow Leopard Install disc, then download and install the "combo" update to get back to 10.6.2. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • How do I exclude items from itunes match?

How do I exclude select items or playlists from itunes match?

The quick answer is that you don't.
However, there are some options, which are all a bit fiddly.
You could split your library, so that songs which you don't want in the cloud are in one library and those that you do want are in another. There are plenty of problems with this method.
You could force the songs to be ineligible for match. The most common way of doing this is to tell iTunes that they are podcasts or audiobooks. That way match will exclude them, but depending on your useage this could be a problem. They won't turn up if you are shuffling music for example.
The method I prefer requires a second library signed up for match. Add your music and then, on the second library delete the songs, selecting to delete them from the cloud. This will not remove the original file from your main library and it will stay there with the iCloud status of "removed". I find that this works very well, but be warned that if you turn match off and on again on the main computer then it will add all those songs to the cloud again, so this isn't a solution if you are likely to turn match off and on regularly.
Other than that, the only option is to wait and hope that Apple add the ability to exclude songs.

  • Outlook 2013 mail/cal item crash

    Hello, hope someone can help.
We have recently updated our standard Outlook mail accounts to Exchange. With the change my outlook has been upgraded from 2010 to 2013.
Anyway, after a great deal of kafuffle in configuring exchange, downloading clients, uninstalling, installing and re-installing I finally have Outlooks 2013 booting up in to safe mode. I should point out that I'm running on a 64bit Windows 7 OS, with 32bit
office 2010 and now 32bit Outlook 2013 - I realise this to be far from perfect but it's all I've got!
Now I can boot into safe mode just fine, but opening up a mail item, creating new mail, opening or creating new calendar items all crash Outlook. After going through many help articles on the MS sites and forums, this lead me to believe it was a problem
with the reading pane and/or an add-on. I have since removed ALL add-ons with the exception of "Microsoft VBA for Outlook Add in" which isn't able to be disabled.
I have also noted that in the "Customise ribbon" menu there are no options in the drop-downs, and resetting all ribbon customisations gives the same crash.
Instead of posting a ream of error reports and the like, I thought I’d just post the highlights of my day so far:
This one is the most common: Faulting module name: MSVCR100.dll, version: 10.0.40219.325, time stamp: 0x4df2be1e

    Hi,
You mentioned you have tried rebooting in Safe Mode. Please note there is a little difference between
    Safe Mode and Clean Boot.
Basically, the purpose of Clean Boot is mainly to troubleshoot software compatibility issues. To perform clean-boot troubleshooting, you must take a number of actions, and then restart the computer after each action.
This article below explains more information about Clean Boot:
    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
So here I suggest we perform a clean boot to troubleshoot this issue. Hope this can find out the issue cause.

One of the suggestion is to customize BTE 1820; and exclude these items in the selection.

  • Time Machine: Excluded Items Do Not Appear In Excluded Window

    Greetings,
I have been successfully using Time Machine for some time now. I switched to Lion about 5 weeks ago and I have also recently added a second TM 1TB Backup Drive (SeaGate) to use as an off-site backup of my 1TB External Media Drive (iOmega) and my entire 160GB Internal Drive. I have also restructured the Folders on my 1TB External Media Drive which would've effected the file path of almost every file. I have been experiencing a multitude of issues since then.
    1. For the first time, I have been getting error messages telling me that the backup drive is full. I am only backing up a total of 782GB on the External and 133GB on the Internal (915GB Total). So to get around this I have been using the Exclude feature. This is where the next issue occurs..
    2. When I add Folders to the Exclude list, they do not appear in the Exclude window; however the "Estimated size of full backup" dialog at the bottom right adjusts to reflect the changes. I cannot delete or use the "-" to remove folders from the list, because they do not appear to be there. I seem to be able to get around this by turning the TM Off then On again, but the trouble doesn't end there.
    3. Once I have excluded enough folders for the backup to be small enough and I begin the backup, TM displays the "Preparing Backup" message for quite sometime. During this time several things tend to happen:
         a) the entire computer begins to run VERY SLOW, with the PinWheel of Death showing up frequently
         b) about every other time, the TM Preferences window crashes and displays an error message saying it encountered a problem and had to close
    4. Even if I could successfully use this method of backing up 1 large folder at a time, it becomes very confusing as to what has been backed up recently and what still needs to be backed up. It basically goes against the entire idea of having an automated backup system to have to split up the backups in that manner.
I am very frustrated, as TM has traditionally been a trouble/worry-free system for me. I have seen many posts regarding the various error messages i've received but no one else is complaining about this Exclude issue. I am most appreciative of any help you may offer.
    Thanks!
    PW

  • Minimum Values in Billing Doc - Consolidated Invoice - How to exclude items

I have a requirement to apply a minimum charge to an invoice but the minimum amount is not to be based on the total value of the invoice.
The invoice is used to bill a rental contract via a billing plan, via deliveries based on actual usage and other manually entered transactions. All these contribute to the minimum value.
The invoice is also used to bill other debit notes during the period but their value MUST not be included when the minimum value is to be determined.
The minimum pricing condition is working as standard SAP, BUT I need to exclude the value of some of the line item. I can distinguish which item are to be excluded by the preceding document type.

  • How to move excluded items into Measures in OBIEE 11g Pivot Table

    Hi All,
Need your help. Previously I have about 25 facts in my pivot table as rows. Now I need to add about 10 more. Adding new criteria only put the items into Excluded section. How can I move all these new items at once to the end of the existing facts? What I can do now is moving them one by one, and in the middle of existing facts, then move it again, because I can point my cursor to the end of them directly.
    Thanks a lot,

I've tried to drag the fact heading, but I can't point my cursor to the end of existing list of facts (unfortunately they are all in the same fact group name). Do you have any suggestion on how to put the new facts at the end of the list?

  • Any solutions to purchased items crashing iPad after iOS 6?

Trying to view  iTunes purchased items causes my devices to crash after iOS 6.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

  • Time Machine Exclude Items Not Working

So I just started using TM, or rather trying to use it.
I have a pretty big HD to backup, and since 200GB of it is just a copy of one large folder on a server I wish to exclude it from backup. So I go into Time Machine and click the "Options" button, click "+" and add the folder (it's actually ~/Documents/Audio). Everything looks fine, it tells me the size etc. Then I click "Done".
Trouble is, when I look again in the list the folder is gone. In fact no matter what I try I cannot add any folders to this list. Time Machine seems to totally throw away anything I add to the exclude list.
    Any ideas anyone?
    --Tim

So, I'm having somewhat the opposite problem, Time Machine is busily "Excluding..." items, currently up to about 6 million and going strong. The problem is, sort of the opposite you were experiencing, I have no files/drives in my exclude list, yet it is finding something to exclude.
I stopped it last attempt, when it had excluded some 30 million items, seemed to be making no progress whatsoever, and followed the troubleshooting hints for a full reset #A4 (http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html). Just for grins I also erased the drive again, to start with a clean slate.
I'm backing up to a WD 1 TB drive connected to my old G4 PowerBook running 10.5.8, and connected to it over the network, with the machine and the drive shared out. I can see the drive and files, and can read from and write to the drive. TM has no issue mounting the drive, and has written a small file to it (~1 gb so far).
Is this symptomatic of some other odd TM behavior, or should I just let it run and see what it does?
    Thanks for any insights,

  • CS3/CS4 - Preview of page item = Crash in rare cases

    Hi,
I'm wondering about how the to draw a preview of a page item, in the most correct way. Currently im using the SnapshotUtils like:

    And then:

However, one customer(PPC Mac 10.4 CS4) had a crash in this code, as seen from the partial stack trace below:

    Hi Toke,
I do not have any experience with this sort of stuff ;-(
However have you noticed the sdk sample transparencyeffect which still uses GetAGMImageRecord even with CS4. Maybe the sample code sheds some light on your problem.

I have a defined a search scope on a list at the site collection level. The scenario is when users issue a search query (using OOB advanced search web part) and if the search query happens to be the List Item ID then that record is also in the search result.
Though this is a correct scenario since the item ID exists in the search scope but to the end user this is not a valid functionality.
How to exclude this from the search scope?
    Regards
    Arnav

You can try to remove the ID from the index by modifying the managed\crawl properties.  But then you will affect *anything* that uses that ID (including internal sharepoint features).

  • Exclude items at billing document creation

    Hello everyone,
Our team receive the follow user request: at the moment of billing document creation, exclude all itens from delivery where quantity is igual zero.
What's the best approach, use user-exit at VF01 to exclude all itens with quantity=zero or try to find some customazing (SPRO) to do that?
Are there someone that had the same problem or like that? Is it prossible to do that by customizing?
    Thanks!
    Flávio

You should be able to do it using config. Follow the path
Implementation Guide for R/3 Customizing (IMG)
    -->Sales and Distribution
       -->Billing
          -->Billing Documents
-->Maintain Copying Control For Billing Documents
-->Copying control: Delivery document to billing document
Here select your source delivery type and the target invoice type. Then click on 'item'. Select the appropriate item categories and do a display. You can play with the settings there to exclude the items that you don't want in the invoice. If nothing from standard settings work for you, you can still use the 'copying requirements' field to enter your own requirement there.
