Excluding sites from favourites in safari for yosemite

In the previous version of safari it was possible to set certain sites to be "excluded" from the "top sites" or favourites page.
in Yosemite this doesn't seem to be possible - which is a bit of a step back and in my view a serious omission.
I use the same laptop for both work (medicine) and social life. I don't mind things being in my browsing history because there's nothing shameful, and anyway you have to go deliberately looking to see history. However I don't necessarily want a work colleague to whom I've let the laptop for a few minutes, to casually see details of my social life, like which dating sites I may or may not visit, or indeed which forums and discussion groups I may be a member or.
Unfortunately as my social use is probably at least as great as my professional use the "top sites" section is peppered with details of my social browsing history which I'm just not comfortable with. Please can someone tell me how to get this feature back in the new version?

How do you stop mobile sites from loading in safari automatically on my iPad? I can't log into mobile me because of this.

The me.com website is not designed for or intended to be accessed by iOS devices. Apple provides support in iOS or seperate Apps for accessing all aspects of MobileMe except for the Accounts section.
Use MobielMe as intended and you'll have no problems.
    See: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1673
Even if you use a different browser to get access to me.com on iOS, you'll find most of it is unusable.
Other websites that present you with the mobile version have been programmed to do so by their developers. They specifically look for users accessing from 'mobile' devices and switch to the mobile site. Many such sites provide a link to go back to the 'full' site, if not, there's not a lot you can do except use a browser that can pretend not to be a mobile browser.

  • How do you stop top sites from loading in safari

I have tried for days to stop "Top Sites" from loading in Safari 7.0
In my ~Library I have locked the:
    Safari db
    metadata db
    etc.
There is no way I can find to stop these crap top sites from loading!!!!!!!!!:(
Anyone found a way to fix this?

Never mind, I found out how to do it. However, you can't get rid of all the sites because in Safari 7.0, in the Preferences>General Tab, you can only change Top Sites to a minimum of six. So, you can't entirely get rid of them.

  • How can I install Safari for Yosemite after I uninstalled Safari?

I uninstalled Safari hoping to remove some type of bug that I could not remove in extensions or add-ons. Last resort type of thing. I do not have the installation disc since I made the upgrade via the App Store. The only solution I see is a reinstallation of Yosemite which seems like using a tunicate when a bandaid would do.
    Thanks.

You will need to reinstall Yosemite:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Also see:

Choose the version you have installed now:

  • Top Sites page locks up safari for many seconds

I've got a bit of a bloated Snow Leopard upgrade from Leopard and from Tiger before that.. I've also had my boot drive full in the past and worry a bit about defragmentation, not that there is any official way to really look into that.
Anyways when i create a new tab in my safari right now it pin wheels for sometimes 1-2 mins at a time.. I'm using istat menus pro and can see that the hdd is absolutely getting busy, bizarrely writing a lot, rather than reading a lot at 5mb/s. I can only assume perhaps its trying to update the top sites, but its very frustrating that it blocks.. it even starts to block the entire mac until it comes back.
Anyone got any suggestions? I'd love to be able to see WHAT files are being written/read at any one time, then i'd be able to know better WHAT is taking up all the time.
Anyone else experiencing this kind of performance?

This fixed another issue with Top Sites and I have a feeling it could help you here.
    Goto ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari
    There's a cache.db file there, it's probably quite large.
Delete this and the Webpage Previews folder.
Fresh versions will be created when you restart Safari.

  • Newest Safari for Yosemite? I have 8.0.4 but it doesn't work

Safari very flakey. Locks up, can't access app store at all, have tried from Firefox. Want to reinstall safari but unable to access.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Excluding sites from cache

    Greetings -
I am working with CE566 in a "Stand-Alone" configuration and I had a question. Is there anyway, via the CLI or web interface, to disable caching for a specific URL? We have users that are going to the same search engine sites and the results of the first user's searches are being displayed when other users try to use the same search engine. I am 99% sure that this is because the other users are receiving their search results from the CE's cache and not the Internet.
Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thx.
    Joe

    Joe,
you can use the rule no-cache function.

  • Exclude Site from being Proxied through Scansafe\CCWS

    Hi,
We are rolling out CCWS and have found that some sites behave strangely when being proxied through the towers. They are legitimate sites and not blocked. They work to an extent but will randomly crash giving Server or Proxy error / Bad Request.
If we bypass CCWS completely and point the browser out a different proxy, the site works absolutely fine.
Is there a way too stop this single site being proxied by the CCWS?
    Thanks

How are you redirecting your web traffic? Are you using PAC file? If you are, you can configure exception on the PAC file to go DIRECT for those website that you would like to bypass. Alternatively, if you configure the proxy setting directly to tower, you can also configure bypass within the "Do not user proxy", or "No proxy" section.

  • Monitor Safari for iPhone browsing from iMac?

Don't know much about iCloud or if this is even an option. Wondering if there is a way to monitor web browsing (i.e. what sites are visited) on Safari for iPhone on my iMac using a combination of Parental Controls and iCloud somehow.  Is iCloud solely for syncing other types of content? Is there an option to disable the 'Clear History' function on Safari for iPhone? Never seen it....worth asking.
I know how to disable Safar for iPhone in the restrictions.  Trying to avoid that if at all possible.  Just want accountable usage of Safari for iPhone without having to disable it and download some other browsing app that will not match Safari's superb mobile browsing experience.

  • Uploading iweb site from my idisk

I recently had a hard drive crash on me so I've been restoring all of my old files using idisk. Problem is when I open iweb it keeps wanting to create a completely new site instead of opening my old site. I am afraid if I start a new site I will copy over my old files. Maybe there is a way to get iweb to "link" with my current site on mobileme. Apple is usually good at making this stuff easy so I am missing something obvious.

The domain file is not exactly a secret.
If you care to read the iWeb Help, you will find this:
"Your websites are stored in one file called “Domain” on your computer. You can copy this file to another computer as a backup or to work on your site from another location. For example, you may want to update your website from home and from work.
The Domain file is located in your Library/Application Support/iWeb/ folder in your home folder.
To move your Domain file, do one of the following:

Copy the Domain file to the default location shown above on another computer, and then open iWeb.

Copy the Domain file to another computer, but not to the default location, and then double-click the Domain file.
In either case, the next time you open iWeb the most recent Domain file opens.
It’s best to leave the Domain file in its default location unless you have a good reason for moving it.
IMPORTANT: If you use the same Domain file on different computers, be sure to always use the latest version of the file. Otherwise, when you publish, you may overwrite your site with old information."
If you care to open System Preferences, you can set up File Sharing or research this topic in Mac Help.

  • I have been using Safari for years and have always kept it on "private." Starting two days ago, I suddenly found myself unable to log onto my blog and many other sites that I normally log onto when private is set. Why?

I have been using Safari for years and have always kept it on "private." Starting two days ago, I suddenly found myself unable to log onto my blog and many other sites that I normally log onto when private is set. This so annoying, I just switched to Firefox. I don't like Firefox nearly as much as I like Safari. What is happening? How do I fix the problem?
    Thank you.

Might be a corrupted database ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

My macbookpro is not opening pdf sites from safari or firefox, it goes to the address but just gives me a black screen. I can however open a pdf file that I have saved on my HD, it opens on preview. any thoughts? osx 10.6.8

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
