Excruciatingly slow Finder using "open with".

I have an iMac9,1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz with 8 Gb RAM. OSX Lion 10.7.3.
Whenever I right click on a file in Finder and select "open with" the spinning wheel starts and may continue for 5 minutes, then stops and still doesn't open a drop down list of applications. During this time it's not possible to force quit or do anything else. Very frustrating. Thanks for any suggestions.

Heh, when I posted that question your post had not appeared on my browser.  You probably posted it while I was creating mine!  So I saw my reply flagged as correct without knowing what it is actually helped and started to construct my question.
As for what caused the slowness, I am not sure.  It was most likely a corrupted (font?) cache file.  Sometimes that happens.
Here's another apple doc on what safe mode does.
Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
I guess one of the things mentioned there is what got cleaned up.
This is one of the possible diagnostic techniques, i.e., boot in safe mode just to do these cleanups, and then reboot normally.
Glad you got it back to "normal" again.

  • How do I change the default in Finder for Open With

I want to set the default ffor a file type in Finder when using Open With.  How?

Select the file to open, use CMD+i and set " open with" to the application of choice  and " use this application to open all this file type".

  • Finder window opens with inconsistent view

Since I upgraded to Yosemite, Finder windows open with inconsistent size, position and view. After a power on a Finder window generally opens as a small, centrally-located window in Icon view even though preferences is set to always open in column view; sometimes the small window is in column view. Rarely, the first new window opens in the same size, position and view as the last one was before power off then the next one - opened using Command-N - opens as a small, central window in Icon view. In all previous versions of Mac OS, new Finder windows opened in the same size, position and view as the window I closed last on screen, even after a power off/on. Once I reset the window size, position and view to my preference, new windows generally open correctly.
Is there some setting I can change so new windows always retain the size, position and view as the last one closed?

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Not able to copying files/folders from one Document Library to another Document Library using Open with Browser functionality

    Hi All,
We have SharePoint Production server 2013 where users are complaining that they are not able to copy or move files from one document library to another document library using “Open with Explorer” functionality.
We tried to activate publishing features on production server but it did not work. We users reported following errors:
Copying files from one document library to another document library:
Tried to map the document libraries and still not get the error to copy files:
In our UAT environment we are able to copy and move folders from using “Open with Explorer” though.
We have tried to simulate in the UAT environment but could not reproduce the production environment.
Any pointers about this issue would be highly appertained.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John and all,
One the newly created web applications that we created few days back and navigated to document library, clicked on “Open with Explorer”, we get this error.
We're having a problem opening this location in file explorer. Add this website to your trusted and try again.
We added to the trusted site in Internet Explorer for this web application, cleared the cache and open the site with same document library but still get the same above error.
However, another existing web application (In same the Farm) that we are troubleshooting at the moment, we are able click on “Open with Explorer”,  login in credentials opens and we entered the details we are able to open the document
library and tried to follow these steps:
From Windows Explorer (using with Open with Explorer), tried to copy or move a files to
    source document library.
From Windows Explorer moved this file to another destination document library and we got this error.
What we have to achieve is users should be able to copy files and folders using
Open with Explorer functionality. We don’t know why Open with Explorer
functionality not work working for our environment.
    Are we doing something wrong?
We have referred to following websites.
we hope concepts of copying / Moving files are similar as SharePoint 2010. Our production environment is SharePoint 2013.

  • How can I get to see the app NoteTaker HD in the options I have when I use " Open with ..."

How can I get to see my app Note Taker HD in the options that I have when I use " Open with ...  "  I am trying to open a PDF that I have attached to a mail document in Note Taker HD.

To buy Apps or to check out the Apps available via your iPad use the App Store App.
On your iPad your Music is kept in the iPod App and the movies are on the Movie App after you have synced the Music and Movies from iTunes on your computer to your iPad.

  • Can't open documents in Time Machine using "Open with..."

When I'm viewing a document in Time Machine and I'd like to open it, I can't do so. I can use Quicklook on a .txt file, for instance, and in the top-right corner it says "Open with Textmate" (because I'm using Textmate to read .txt files), but clicking it does nothing. How can I fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

I apologize for stressing the point, but, again, can I ask why you're trying to go through Time Machine to get to your Reunion files? From your first post, it sounded as though you recovered everything from your backup (presumably you used the "Recover from TM backup" option when you installed the new hard drive?)
Does Reunion run normally when you launch it from your Applications folder (forgetting about Time Machine for a minute)? If so, do you have your current Reunion data somewhere in your Documents folder (or wherever you stored it before?) If not, and you believe you still have Reunion files in your backups, you should quit Reunion itself, then go into the Finder, go to the Time Machine interface, and locate your data file. Not the Reunion application, the family data file. Then recover that from the backup.
Again, the reason you're seeing what you're seeing through Time Machine is that TM is not "aware" of most applications (ie, you can't just launch any app, go to TM and expect that app's data to appear in the interface). It works for Mail, Address Book, iPhoto and the Finder. It's the Finder you're experiencing when you're going back in Time Machine, not Reunion itself. You just happen to be looking at the Reunion icon when you do so.

  • Clean up Finder contextual "Open With" menu list

This is an annoying 'feature' of the Finder in OS X. As you install/upgrade applications the contextual menu "Open With" gets bloated with multiple programs including programs you've deleted, plus multiple versions of programs you've upgraded. For example for JPEGs I have three entries for ImageWell.
[One of the tips I found|http://the-fergusons.net/2007/05/01/clean-up-the-mac-os-x-contextual-open -with-menu> seaching doesn't work because the folder structure in 10.5.x is now different.
Also [this method|http://macapper.com/2007/10/08/tutorial-clear-the-finders-open-with-menu > of deleting plist file doesn't work properly.
    Anyone know how to:
    a) Clean up the list of shown apps fully
    b) Optionally restrict the list to applications shown to only those which you wish to have come up. For example don't show Apple Pages for .TXT files only TextEdit and TextMate.

You can adjust it to Leopard's structure using the 'locate lsregister' command in Terminal. This yielded...
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister
... on my system... I then appended the options as per the tip you linked and it worked...

  • Using Open With in Vista

I recently upgraded from CS3 to CS4 on two computers, one with XP and the other with Vista. The computer with the XP I have had no problems. The computer with Vista I have a problem trying to open Jpeg files using the Open With feature of Vista. I have been trying to add PhotoShop, In-Design and Bridge, so far, as default programs.
Windows will allow me to find PhotoShop, e.g. But, when I click on the photoshop icon to set it as the default, nothing happens. It is the same for the other programs in CS4.
I don't have this problem on the computer with XP on it and I never had this problem, on either computer, with CS3.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions? I called Adobe and they just said it was a Windows problem and to call Dell.
    Thanks,
    Doug

In Vista, if I select a JPG and double click it, it opens a window with the image showing. At the top of the page at the end of the horizontal menu it says "Open" and I choose Adobe Photoshop out of the list. Do you have the same options?

  • Finder's "Open With" Broken...?

The Mavericks Finder isn't honoring the "Open With" change on my system for some reason.
    - I select a JPG
    - Open the Get Info window
    - Change Open With from Photoshop CS6 to Photoshop CC
    - Hit the Change All... button
    - The dialog box appears asking me to confirm the change, and I hit Continue
    - The Get Info window reverts back to Phtoshop CS6
Same thing happens if I select Photoshop CC using the "Other" option.
    Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I have no solution. But I can confirm that it is a problem.
This goes beyond JPG and Photoshop. I have some stock analysis files with a ".ssg" extension. The Finder said they open by default with Microsoft Messinger. When I changed the Get Info box to open with "SIG2" and clicked "Change all", when I confirmed my change it revered back to Microsoft Messinger. So I deleted Microsoft Messinger and did it again. Now it says Equation Editor is the default, and when I confirm the change to open all with SIG2, it reverts back to Equation Editor. So I have to change each file individually, and save it. That seems to "stick," but even then, if I click "Change all" it reverts back to something else.
So, it is simply broken. It may take a while for it to be fixed, as I don't think Apple gives much attention to problems that affect only a very few people, assuming that it is the result of user error. And this problem will be posted in different ways that will make it difficult to recognize. So it will look like a more rare problem than it is. Not that I have any way of knowing the extent of the problem.

  • Can't open PSD files using "Open With..." feature in 3rd party programs.

I use MediaPro to manage my media assets and it allows me to pass files to PE10 with an "Open With..." feature.  So I can have a file selected in MediaPro, and then open that file with PE by using this feature.  It worked great with PE8, but for some reason I cannot get it to work with PE10.  When I use the feature, PE10 opens, but to a blank page - the actual image fails to come into the program.
I know the problem is NOT with MediaPro, since this worked flawlessly with PE8.  The problem appears to be with PE10.  Any ideas???
    Carl...

If this is on a mac, my guess is that you are choosing the obvious file as your external editor rather than the correct one. You want this one:
The file at the top level of the PSE 10 folder is just an alias to the welcome screen.

    Windows 7 - Firefox 15*-16*
if Firefox is not already running, opening a PDF document using Firefox (eg right-clicking PDF from desktop, selecting 'open with > Firefox) is always causing Firefox top open the PDF in two different windows.
Happening with PDF plugins enabled and disabled.
Maybe this is a bug and I should report as such?

  • Can't use"Open With" multiple files Bridge to Premiere

I'm running Vista 32 bit CS3 Bridge and Premiere.
    According to the Video workshop
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter-archive/video_workshop/
under Premiere > all 19 topics > Managing Media in Adobe Premiere Pro > at 02:46 it shows group selecting a bunch of quicktime files using Edit > Select all, then File > Open With ...the drop down shows Premiere.
Mine only show Premiere if a single file is selected. If I multiple select, it only shows Quicktime Player 7.6.
I've checked the file type association in preferences of Bridge to open these files in Premiere but it still only sees Premiere if a single file is selected.
I've upgraded Bridge to 2.1.1.9 and set to run as Administrator but to no avail.
    Any ideas?

The files are .mov quicktime. Rightclicking gives the same error.
I've got the latest update (2.1.1.9)
Not yet tried to reset Preferences but will do that tomorrow. (will let you know)
    However.....
I have now changed the file association in Vista, re-started Premiere and Bridge and then after having started just Premiere chose File > Browse and the selected all the .mov files and selected Open With. Hurrah! Premiere is now listed!
However, If I continue the focus changes to Premiere but a warning appears "This file path does not exist on disk at this location".
Nothing is imported. Unlike the video workshop mentioned above.
If however, I chose Open and not Open with then the files are imported.
Seems to be a bug with Open with with more than one file chosen. If a single file is chosen and Open With is applied then the focus changes to Premiere but no file is imported.
I have seen the exact same problem in another discusion "Re: Bridge CS3: Not importing clips into Premiere CS3" (see the More Like This panel on the rightside of this window)

That is a problem with an AVG extension or toolbar.

  • PSE 11 - Trying to Use "Open With" not working right

Hi - I just bought PSE 11 and have installed it on my computer.  I am trying to right click on a file and use the "Open With" option to open the jpg in the program.  However, the program opens but not the photo.  I can open files within the program by going to "File - Open" just fine.  The program that is on the "Open With" list isn't the right one (it's Adobe Photoshop Elements 11 rather than PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe).  However, when I try to browse to and select the correct file it doesn't show up when I get back to the "Open With" screen.  I've tried uninstall and reinstall.  I've also tried using the program on another user and it works fine there but I don't want to switch all of my info to another user just to open photos.  Photos open just fine in PSE 9 with the "Open With" method.  Any help would be *greatly* appreciated.  Thanks.

Go to the Editor application in the programs or programs (x86) folder and right-click on it and choose properties. Select the security tab and make sure you have full permissions with read/write capability.

  • Cannot use "Open with Access"

I have some users that are trying to use the Open with Access feature to open lists in Access. I have installed Access 2010 on all of the computers trying to use this feature, but it only works on Vista and 7. I can't get it to work on XP.
Is this feature not supported in XP/IE 8? Does it require a newer version of IE?

    Hi,
This feature is supported in IE 8 which i have a test on my windows server 2008 r2, but I do not know if it’s supported in windows xp. What do you mean that it doesn’t work? Is there no open with access button or grayed out?
