Exe files: help to open

I have (had) an exe file on desktop that i tried to open with Vista / Fusion / Bootcamp with no success. Then tried another approach following these instructions:
Directions for Use
* If the .exe file did not download to your desktop, move it there.
* Go to the Utilities folder on your Mac.
* Open Terminal. Verify that you're at the root of your computer.
* Type cd Desktop and press Return.
* Type unzip filename.exe, where "filename" is the name of the downloaded file. Press Return.
* Once Terminal is done inflating the file(s) to the desktop, quit Terminal.
* Open the new file with the appropriate application.
Didn't work: terminal told me it couldn't find it or something similar. I closed terminal and now there is an image of the document on desk top but no name or discription.
Any suggestion on what to do?
And was this the correct way to open exe?

I'm not sure what this question has to do with Apple's Software Update for Windows...a software package for Windows designed to update Apple products that run on Windows, but if .exe files can only be opened in Windows. So if you're having issues with a file I suggest you contact the author of the file or post your question on an Windows discussion forum, as what you're seeing has really nothing to do with Macs.

If a file has the suffix '.exe', it is very likely a program written for the Microsoft MS-DOS or Microsoft Windows operating systems. The suffix '.exe' is used as a mnemonic for 'executable file'.
Software for one operating system generally don't operate in other operating systems. This is because of fundamental differences in the features and mechanisms available to programs to get them to work.
That isn't to say that you cannot obtain software for the Mac OS X operating system that will permit you to run this software. There are at least 5 different solutions available to users of Macs with Intel-branded processors: Boot Camp, Parallels, VMWare Fusion, CrossOver Mac, and WINE.
The first three require a licensed version of Microsoft Windows XP (a couple also support Vista) operating system, and the last two do not. Boot Camp permits you to divide your hard disk into a Windows section, and a Mac OS X section, then install Windows. When you turn on the computer, you are presented with a menu asking which operating system you want to use -- but you can use only one at a time.
Parallels and VMWare fusion are virtual machines. They are software applications that create a second computer completely within the application into which you can install another operating system like Windows. It has the advantage that it runs in Mac OS X and you can basically use both operating systems at the same time. The cost is a modest performance hit, and the fact that the application necessarily uses quite a bit of memory -- leaving less for other applications. Parallels has a slick feature that hides the Windows desktop, allowing the Windows application to appear just like it were a Mac app.
The free and open source WINE, and it's commercial off-shoot, CrossOver Mac, use a third approach. They provide utilities that will translate between the Windows application's instructions (system calls) and those of the Mac OS X operating system (WINE also works on other UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems). An program run this way is more or less running as a Mac program and performance is exceptionally good. The caveat is that not all of the features and resources of the Windows operating system are equally well developed and some programs will exhibit bugs, and others may not run at all with this method.

I have just tested it on a self-extracting Windows Internet Explorer and it opened it first time on my Mac.
However, as you have been told, normally Windows executable files cannot be opened or used on Macs.

By reading the system requirements prior to any downloading or installation.
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

CDs & EXE files slow to open

Hi,
I'm developing in Captivate 4, and many of the e-learning courses that I develop must be placed on a CD for the customer. Although, the EXE file opens fine, it takes forever. There are 62 slides in the primary file, but there are swfs imported into the container file that contains no more than 13 slides from 6 other projects. All of our in-house PCs have auto-run turned off, so we have to double click on the exe file to open it. I'm using an Intel Duo Core Processor with 3.16 ghz and 3.25 gigs of RAM with a 75 gig hard drive. This should be more than enough for the file to open quickly, but it takes almost 5 minutes to open from a CD and about 2 - 3 to open the same exe file from the server. However, the html files open immediately.
Does anyone know why it would take so long for the exe file to open from a CD and if so, what can be done to resolve it?

Hi there
Here are the things I'd be checking. Create a simple Captivate that is perhaps two or three slides long. Just enough so that you can test the load time. Burn it to CD and test. If it seems to take an unusually long time to open, you may need to investigate things like Anti-virus scanners and the like.
Have you tested this on other PCs or just on your own?

Allowing .exe file attachments to open in PDFs - creating reg key

Hi,
I'm creating some user support material and have attached .exe files to PDFs. As this is a black-listed file type the files will not run from the PDF. I've checked the registry keys and the FeatureLockDown key has an empty default key when I expected to see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\[version number]\FeatureLockdown\cDefaultLaunchAttachmentPerms
and be able to allow the file type. Can anyone help? Most users have Acrobat Reader 8. Can I add a key for a file type and give it a value to allow it to run?

You have to change the behavior under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\[version number]\FeatureLockdown\cDefaultLaunchAttachmentPerms -change .exe 3 to .exe 1(or 2). But I agree with the previous post it would not be a good idea to do globally. If you really need it to open the exe you could write a script that would change the registry key then open the pdf. when the pdf is closed it changes the registry key back to .exe 3

A *.exe file can only be opened under Microsoft Windows. If you have tried opening the file using Windows (whether on a boot camp partition and/or Fusion) and it did not open then something is wrong with file. Contact the sender/author of the file and see what the issue is. The file is probably corrupt. Get another copy of the file which is clean.

.exe files will not open

Whenever I download something to my computer (say an .exe file), when I try to open it, I get a message saying "Error Opening Movie" for Quicktime. The most recent file is not a movie, it is a game setup file. What should I be opening it with and how?

install files are generally *.dmg files
The file mounts to your desktop then you can drag your install program to your "Applications folder"
Exe files are execution files for Windows and only works there. You need to make sure your downloads are for OS-X

EXE files can't open?

I successfully ran Boot Camp and installed Windows XP Pro but aside from everything else working fine I can't seem to be able to open EXE files.
I get the error that it's not a valid Win32 file when clearly it is. I tried this for another app too and this time I got a dialog box saying:
Error loading Hawlvoice library (hvdi.dll) Maybe not installed?
I have no idea what's wrong. I installed all the drivers from my Leopard disc, could it have skipped some? Is my Windows installation corrupt?

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
first make sure that the Mac audio device is recognized and the driver for it installed (Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager).

Macs use OS X, which is an operating system different than Windows. EXE files are designed to work in Windows, so it's normal that you can't run them.
If it's a program, you can try an application like CrossOver that allows you to install Windows applications in OS X. However, note that it doesn't always work correctly, so the best option is to run Windows in your Mac.

If you need a virtual machine, install an application like Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and create a virtual machine to install Windows.

Downloaded Firefox v5 .exe file does not open (have downloaded twice now)

Downlaod and tried to start the ,exe file. Cursor span for a few seconds and then nothing.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Adobe Dreamweaver cs3 download, exe file can not open

The .EXE is a Windows version. Download the Mac version (the .DMG).

I installed an update for 3.6.13 and after I started having problelms. I tried the troubleshooting options but no help so I wanted to remove & reinstall but I can't remove, the uninstall.exe file won't open .

Windows 2000 Pro operating system. Firefox has worked perfectly up until I updated to 3.6. Now the browser runs very slow and takes forever to open sites.
After Firefox opens and I try to go to a site, a pop up warning always opens and says " A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding" I follow the instructions and tell it not to open the script. I went the the step-by-step procedures for troubleshooting without remedy. I want to uninstall the Firefox program but can't. I suspect I have some corrupt files and want to uninstall and re-install Firefox.

Installing Master Collection on CS3--Adobe Updater.exe file says its open

I have CS3 Design Premium and have bought Master Collection. I am trying to install on Vista 32-bit Windows. I put in disk 1 and screen says the Adobe Updater.exe needs to be closed. IT IS NOT OPEN!
I really don't want to wait until Monay when they open. Does anyone know what to do?

Open task manager and see if you can find it under the process list (not applications) and turn it off.
