Exe spyware in Firefox?

I wasn't sure where to post this. I downloaded a thing that really turned out to be an exe file with a txt readme that said it will steal all my Firefox passwords and I have 24 hours to change my master password. I'm a little worried? I didn't run the exe (mac.. duh xD) but doesn't Mac Firefox use exe files? I know that whenever I've started to download something I see a blip of an exe on my desktop. Should I be worried?
PPC OSX 10.3.9

If you aren't running Windows, natively or in a VM, it won't run.
Make sure you are current, I'd use FireFox Minefield 3.0b4+
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
And DO include "NOScript" extension and disable except where needed to use javascript and plug-ins, it will go a step further - on any platform - against XSS and other problems.
Don't click on pop-ups if they get through, don't fall prey to these fake "alerts" which are just malware in disguise.
Last December there was a problem where adware and good web sites ended up being compromised by infected adware servers.
Your computer may be safe, but you need to learn not to click on things you don't trust, and to look at the status bar to see what it will be. Most malware gets through not just lack of AV/spyware/malware protection, but social behavior, visiting sites, untrusted files, and behavior.

  • Can't open important file dropped my mistake in exe file from Firefox to supress Kasperksy

    Hello and thanks for replying! Here are more details on this problem:
    I saw two new exe files in my USB that seem to be related to a Firefox request yesterday which was to disable a Kaspersky option of some kind until Firefox could resolve the incompatibility. I OK'd it. TodayI was moving a file that contains three years of my research and it got dropped into one of these exe files by mistake and I now I cannot access it, copy it move it, or undo the prior move. The file that has trapped my research file is named 36f5e0470ef12f4ccf8016fOdcOf59 . I tried unlocking it, but could not access my file inside. All the unlocking seemed to do was change the name of the file. The files inside, along with my research file, are named: mrt.exe , mrttub.exe , and shutdown.req (this last also has dollar signs in the title which I'm afraid I cannot duplicate on my French keyboard.
    I ran a virus check on both the interior file (my research file) and the exterior file (the former exe file) and at least can see that the names of my files come up in the search, so the interior file does not seem empty. There were no viruses found in either the exterior or interior file. I have not unplugged by USB yet and am not sure what to try next. My operating system is Windows XP 2002 in case that helps.
    I have contacted Kaspersky as well but am not sure if these files were generated from them, from Firefox, or if it is malware. Thank you very much for your help. This would be a very great loss to me and any suggestions you might have would be most appreciated!
    Reards,
    Elizabeth

    Hello!
    And thank you so much for answering!
    These file names look similar to what is there for sure. But I don't think I want to delete them at this point. The problem is that I was moving a large file full of documents I use (about 100 files) that and that entire file dropped by mistake into this .exe file. Now hundreds of my files are trapped there and I can't seem to access or copy them. I would be afraid to delete the .exe file as I think it would probably delete my 100 documents along with it.
    I guess what I need to know is how to open an .exe files in a way that lets me retrieve my document. Maybe I could do something that would give me the right to access it? Right now it is read only, and it does not seem to let me change the status, or to open my file sitting inside it.
    It is like a dog who ate my supper!
    Thanks again for your help!

  • I just did two System Restores (and clicked something that asked me about "[something -exe]," and now Firefox won't open at all.

    I hope someone can help. My husband did something to update Firefox (or Firefox just automatically updated today, I don't know which), but I didn't like the new toolbar much, so I did a System Restore to get back the old one. That didn't work, so I then did another System Restore for an earlier day, but when I restarted the computer, Firefox wouldn't open at all.
    A pop-up asked me something about "allowing 'something-.exe' at start-up," with options like "Remember this action, don't allow, and allow," I think, and I don't remember what I clicked, and that's likely part of the problem, but in any case, I can't get Firefox to start now. I click on the logo/icon and nothing happens.
    I tried to undo both System Restores, but the computer would only restore the most recent one, not both.
    And I tried, as suggested on the forum elsewhere, to go into "Firefox Safe Mode," but that didn't help either.
    Thank you for any help.

    That's what happened to me too after I upgraded to firefox 4 and it wouldn't connect to my internet. Now I'm stuck with Internet Explorer with none of my important personal information like my favorites.

  • I downloaded 3.6.8 and found Win32.Cherche.us in module plugin-containers.exe in mozilla firefox directory. i now have many network computers to clean and a lot of work, check your files

    I started installing 3.6.8 several network computers. When I started firefox, I got the message from spybot that Win32.Cherche.us was found in file plugin-container.exe in the mozilla firefox directory. This is a rootkit and I will probably to re install/clean at least 4 or 5 virtual/real machines. This will be a lot of work on a weekend when I just wanted to rest
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
    == I installed 3.6.9

    Could an admin or mod please answer.
    I have a serious question to ask that only they could answer.
    Thank You

  • When I try to download a .exe file extension, Firefox designates it as a binary file which is useless to me.

    using Windows 7 with i3 processor all the latest updates. Firefox is the ONLY browser that gives me this problem. I should not have to turn off my antivirus or go into my config files, write code or anything to have this simple task to work. If I buy a download for a program and get one shot at the download which is an executable file, I should not have it come up as a Binary file and can not use it to load the program that I just ordered.

    Sorry you are having problems. Can you give an example preferably of some small publicly available file and the site you are trying to download it from ?
    As a simple example of a download (ok it is a .png image file not not a .exe file) but can you try to download a copy of your avtar/icon, as used on these forums. In Windows one method is that you right click & should get an option save. <br/> Mine alongside uses the link
    * https://support.mozilla.com/media/uploads/avatars/avatar-257447.png
    Are you able to download such an image, then see it in your download manager, and find it on your computer.
    Once you have got Firefox to save your binary file you can use it. In the case of the .exe file you are trying to download that should be usable as intended with your Windows Operating System, the avatar also should be easily opened and viewed.
    P.S.
    You could try installing the add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/opendownload-10902/ if you wished to adapt Firefox to run .exe files instead of just save them.

  • Though installed firefox 10.0, I recently have the application updater.exe running as soon as firefox is launched. The problem disappears when forcefully closing updater.exe, then also firefox calms down. How to avoid this problem?

    It consumes 30% of cpu and takes with it firefox, together consuming more than half of CPU and going on >1/2h.
    This is a new phenomenon which slows down all other activity on my computer.

    After updating to version 10 I closed Firefox.
    I noticed that there was a lot of CPU activity.
    Checked Task Manager and noticed that in Processes, firefox.exe and plug-in container were running. Opened Firefox and closed again but the processes were still running in TM.
    Highlighted firefox.exe in TM and clicked End Process. Both processes disappeared from TM.
    Have opened and closed FF a couple of times since with no problem.
    However, the OP seems to indicate that this is a problem that re-occurs.
    Why is FF not shutting down properly? Is it possibly something to do with the automatic check for add in/extension updates?

  • Can't uninstall firefox with uninstall or helper.exe. Neither Firefox, Uninstall or helper.exe open

    I cannot open Firefox. Last time I used my computer, it was working. Nothing happens when I try to open it. Nothing happens when I click 'Uninstall' for add/remove programs. Nothing happens when I open helper.exe. I tried a system restore but to no avail. Installed troubleshooter-1.1a-fix.xpi. Saved it file but when I open the file, it continues to take me to the dialogue box to save the troubleshooter file.

    Firefox won't open when I click on it so I thought possibly uninstalling and then reinstalling it might resolve this. As stated in my question, I am unable to uninstall it using the control panel or the helper.exe

  • Firefox does not put the file extension ".exe" onto the firefox application, and the browser will not open.

    I downloaded firefox 3.6.6 from the website, followed the install directions and the browser does not open. I opened the task manager and firefox.exe was not in the process list. Locating the target using properties from the desktop icon if found that the application file did not have the ".exe" extension that it showed in the icon field for location. I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times with the same result. I am running windows XP Media Center Version 2002 service pack 3.

    This would usually only happen if the originals were .doc, .dot, .docm,  .dotx or .dotm files and someone changed their extensions. Does your Office installation open docx files created in Word 2013? If not, perhaps the Office installation is
    faulty. In that case, try repairing the Office installation (via Programs & Features > Microsoft Office > Change in the Windows Control Panel).

  • Is updater.exe a Mozilla Firefox file? Symantec keeps blocking it.

    Symantec Endpoint is asking me whether I want to remove this file from my PC or allow the file. what should I do?

    Hello,
    Mozilla does have an updater, but "updater.exe" is a very generic name, for instance:
    * http://www.shouldiremoveit.com/Better-Experience-102105-program.aspx
    If the updater is located in the Mozilla Firefox install directory, then it is most likely safe.
    * Default install directory for 64 bit computers: ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\''
    * Default install directory for 32 bit computers: ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\''

  • When I close Firefox 4.0 RC2, I have four or more instances of "plugin-container.exe" spawn before Firefox (and all of the spawned processes) close. Is this normal/intended behavior?

    These processes seem to be independent of the normal plugin-container process spawned for Flash.

    Probably the easiest way is to download Firefox again from http://www.mozilla.com and re-install it.
    If you want to disable plugin-container, see the section on "Disabling crash protection" at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins

  • Symantec bloquea updater.exe que parece que proviene de una nueva actualización de Firefox. Ruego nos confirmen que realmente es seguro ejecutar dicho updater

    Symantec stops the execution of the software updater.exe. It seems to be localized in the user profile folder, in mozilla firefox folder exactly.
    This is beginning to be more critical every time, cause we have 123 computers in my enterprise and we are afraid that could be a virus.
    Please give us support.
    Thanks in advance. Excuse my bad english.

  • Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing

    Removed working Firefox 7, Installed Firefox 10.0, Firefox will not load. When I click on icon, firefox.exe process shows briefly in task manager, then goes away....no errors, nothing. Never see browser panel at all. Also tried to install Firefox 9.0, but the same result was observed.

    Rather difficult to say what the problem may be at present but for general info please have a look at
    * [[safe mode]]
    *[[firefox will not start]]
    *[[firefox hangs]]
    Note sometimes you may have to wait a while for firefox to shutdown completly, and if it has hung then as explained in the above articles you may need to kill any firefox.exe process that is still running (and maybe plugincontainer.exe)
    Try starting firefox in [[safe mode]] e.g. by holding down shift key
    * do not make any changes in the first window, just click on continue<br/> ? Do you get as far as seeing the options window for safe mode ?
    If firefox is crashing see [[firefox crashes]], this is easier to work through if you can get firefox to start without crashing on startup. Currently some firefox users are finding Firefox 10 crashes on startup, and a new version Firefox 10.0.1 is being released very soon to deal with this and another cause of hangs.
    Not saying any of this applies to your case but recent issues include
    * ask tool bar causing hangs if video is used none English versions [/forums/contributors/708073]
    * possibly some crashes do not start the crash reporter and other issues [/forums/contributors/708122?page=2#post-45059]
    * some general info about current crashes [/questions/917748#answer-308124]
