Execute on shutdown/rmmod on shutdown
I managed to disable beep on shutdown so it's kind of fix to this problem. Its mentioned here as blue note under Audio: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ASUS_N550JV
It can be done by unloading audio module "snd_hda_intel" on shutdown/sleep, so it won't make that "hit" through headphones/mic jack.
My question is, which way would be better to execute command as root "rmmod -f snd_hda_intel"? Or something related to kernel rules.......? o.O
I want it to be as universal as possible (independently from DE/WM) so I could upload it to wiki page.

I'm trying to configure network-ups-tools to properly shutdown UPS after system is halted, so UPS and server could restart when the line power is regained. network-ups-tools contains /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown/nutshutdown shell script which checks if shutdown was caused by nut-monitor daemon and in this case shuts down the UPS. Unfortunately it seems that script isn't executed.
According to man systemd-shutdown:
Immediately before executing the actual system halt/poweroff/reboot/kexec systemd-shutdown will run all executables in /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown/ and pass one arguments to them: either "halt", "poweroff", "reboot" or "kexec", depending on the chosen action.
It sounds logical to use this feature rather than service executed at shutdown as this script will immediately cut the power.
I've created /usr/lib/systemd/system-shutdown/test.sh which writes echo $1 to file, but it also does not seem to be executed. What am I doing wrong?

At that point / is mounted ro, your file should be writed to /run for example, then from "initramfs" after pivot_root (if you have enabled shutdown hook) you can see it (just execute "ash" in /run/initramfs/shutdown at some point , ie just before poweroff -

I have hit a problem with my oracle development database.
When in sqlplus I executed the shutdown command, but nothing happened for several minutes and it was just hanging. No messages were displayed to the screen. The only thing was to close the command window. When I open sqlplus again and enter in the user name password as sysdba I am getting ORA 12514 TNS Listener could not resolve service in descriptor. This is odd as I could log on before and use the database. So I thought that the services were still shutting down I waited, and using the Windows snap on tool for Oracle 11g, I restarted the services on the database, but this has had no effect.
Even using EM made no difference because I couldn't log on to perform a startup or recovery.
So, please does anyone know how I can fix this?

Automatically Shutdown Database During VMware Server 'Shut Down Guest'
I have 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.4.0 running on Windows Server 2003 R2 under VMware Server version 2.0.0.
I 'Power On' the VM and the OS/database start normally. I don't even open the guest OS console from VMware. I use TOAD and SQLPlus from the host machine to access my database.
I'm trying to set up the database to do a clean shutdown when I use the VMware console to 'Shut Down Guest'.
I've used the Group Policy Object Editor (gpedit.msc) to create a shutdown script under 'Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Scripts (Startup/Shutdown)/Shutdown'.
The shutdown script is called Shutdown.bat and contains:
rem adding the first two lines didn't affect anything, so I REMed them

Thanks.We are also having the same issue. We create a shutdown script via the Group Policy editor which works fine if we do a manual shutdown, but if we do a remote shutdown ex: "shutdown /r /f /m <servername /t 120", it does not work, the Database crash.
As mentionned the script works when we do a manual shutdown but does not work for a remote shutdown. The group policy script contains the following:

Alright my fellow Mac friends, I call upon your help.
I have a Mac Pro (specs shown below), that is lightning fast. Startup is less than 10 seconds. Shutdown was great too, until a short time ago.
Within the last 3 weeks or so, something has changed where when I choose restart, it goes right away to just showing the desktop picture and little "thinking propeller", but then just sits for 10-20 seconds. Before this, it would restart within 1-2 seconds.
I've tried digging in console to enlighten me, but no luck. Here is a snippet of my most recent restart attempt. Please let me know if you see anything.

I don't have the exact logs right now, but it very closely matches the previous logs where the loginwindow process is executing the shutdown. It seems like it is happening with a bit of consistency on Sunday evenings. I have checked the Energy Saver preferences and my Retrospect preferences to make sure that there are no shutdown commands coming from those.
Anyone have any ideas why the loginwindow process would be forcing a shutdown? -

For the past several hours, I have scoured the internet searching for an answer to what I thought would be a very simple question. Perhaps it is still a very simple procedure ... I am just at my wits end, though, as to how to do this.
What I want is for a "normal" user to be able to shutdown the system. I am running Solaris 10 on x86. I have tried the following:
Creating a new group, adding the users to this new group, and giving the group execute permission on /usr/sbin/shutdown. Did not work. I get the message "only the user root has permission to ... blah blah blah"
Then I tried usermod with the following parameters:
usermod -A solaris.system.shutdown [username]
didn't work.
I also made sure to newgrp [shutdown_group] before executing the shutdown command. Didn't work. (Did this after I added my users to the new shutdown group)
I have also created new roles (using the roleadd command) - didn't work. I have tried granting "All" permission and roles. I have tried granting "System Admin" permission. All to no avail. I have tried combinations of all of the above; I've tried all of them a second time and rebooted after each and every attempt thinking that maybe - just maybe - all I needed was a simple reboot. This was at 12:00 this afternoon. It's now 6:00.
Regardless of everything that I have tried, I continuously get the error message, "only user root has permission to execute /usr/sbin/shutdown"
What simple thing am I missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sudo shutdown -h -t now or sudo halt have inconsistent results
Basically, shutdown whether I use 'sudo shutdown -h -t now' or 'sudo halt' have inconsistent results on my system. About 1/2 the time the box will power down correctly. The other 1/2 of the time it goes down but simply restarts. Hardware: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe, Athlon XP 3200+, 2×512 meg, Nvidia 8400GS 512 meg onbaord (PCI).

HPDM Update/Install Jobs on ThinClient ShutDown without any "Message"

I want to send Update/Install jobs to our ThinClients which should be executed on "Shutdown" of the ThinClients.
There is the possibility to check the box task deferment but if I check this box and send the task to the ThinClient, the user gets always an HPDM Message with the Job which can be delayed for the configured time, or to install/reboot directly.
I dont want any informations. For example, I'll send a task to the thin client at 1pm and configure that this task sould run on shutdown of the thin client (normally the shutdown of the thinclient happens, if the user goes home from work), so the job can run after finishing time. So I won't disturb any users, and the jobs always runs after the user went home.
I know, I could plan a job with wake on lan, but I've always trouble with wol. There are a lot of thinclients which are connected via VPN or something else... A wol packet wont reach this clients.
Is it possible to send a "delayed" job without any informations ?

I have run the update myself (both for WinDVD Playback v5 & WinDVD Creator v3) from the System Update utility.
Both reported as installed successfully on the System Update "Installed Updates" log though the update for WinDVD Creator v3 keeps showing up on the available updates.
The version i currently have is version 3 so i guess the update went through, the path: C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WCreator3 - so y does it keep popping up on the available updates? -

I'd like to take control of Solaris 10 shutdown sequence, to run own process just after svc.startd ends (remounts rootfs read-only) and before system is halted. My process sends some data to serial port to shutdown UPS system. Unfortunately /sbin/rc0 script is executed too early and causes unclean shutdown.
Is this a method to take control of shutdown sequence?

I wanted to know how I could execute a file with java. Here are a couple scenarios - let's say I am developing an anti-spyware utility and I wanted to first write a batch file, and then create it in a folder, then run it when they click "Run". Then afterwards I want to shutdown their computer.
My Mindset:
- FileWriter to create the .bat and write the Batch commands.
- Execute the batch file.
- Execute the shutdown.exe file to reboot their PC.
So my simple question is, how can I execute a file?

Problems concerning sonata playlists and freevo cover art
Hi!
I'm setting up a media center PC and I'm having some problems with the playlists created by sonata. Another problem I have is not getting freevo to download cover art.
First: When ever I try to make a playlist through the "Current" tab in Sonata it creates a m3u file with every song that's listed in the current window. I'm used to being able to pick one or a couple of songs and then adding it a specified playlist. Is this impossible in sonata? And if I try to play the m3u file created (the one with every song listed) through freevo I get a message that the directory is empty. What am I doing wrong??
Second: I'm having big problems getting freevo to download cover art to my music. I can download info on movies from imdb, but info for the music doesn't work. I store the cover art downloaded by sonata in the different album folders and these covers show up in freevo. But if I have to play every new song i download first in sonata to get the cover art working in freevo I'll go crazy. It's supposed to work the same way in freevo as in sonata isn't it???
It also seems that mplayer can't play m3u files. Using the mentioned sonata made m3u file in mplayer does nothing. Mplayer starts but nothing happens.
My goal is to be able to make playlists through sonata and then play these lists using freevo. I don't want to get up from the couch.

It's clearly not impossible, just different than you expect. Create your playlist as you want it to appear in the Current tab (meaning don't dump every single song from your library in there, just the ones you want) and then save the playlist.

Hi Experts,
Am in the middle of EHP7 upgrade from ECC6.0 with 7.4 SP 37 kernel.
Got an error saying Logon not possible (error in license check). So tried to upload the new license file via SLICENCE but got into new issue saying
The license key library has not been initialized.
I have downloaded the latest COMMONCRYPTO LIB file and updated in the kernel. SAP is not starting after applying those new files even reverted with the old crypto lib files but still the same issue.
SAP is not coming up. R3trans -d is fine. There was no log written in work directory as well.
Please assist.
