Execution of automator workflow problem
I'm trying to execute an Automator workflow from an applescript, but the specific command won't work:
<pre>
set theScript to "path:to:the:script"
tell application "Automator"
activate
execute theScript
end tell
</pre>
For some reason, the command execute theScript just does nothing. I've verified that I've got the path right by substituting open theScript in its place successfully. It seems that the command execute is not working as described in the Automator 2.0 Applescript dictionary.
Am I doing something wrong here? Or is this a bug in the Automator 2.0 Applescript dictionary?
While I haven't answered my original question, I have found a workaround for calling an Automator 2.0 workflow from Applescript. Instead of saving the workflow as a workflow, you save it as an application and then open the application in finder. The code goes like this:
<pre>
set lf to path to library folder from user domain
tell application "Finder" to open (alias (lf & "Scripts:foo.app:" as text))
</pre>
I found this at macosxhints.com; http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071123181555282
I still haven't found what was wrong with calling the workflow as a workflow using the commands in the Automator Applescript dictionary.

How to apply multiple automator workflows to one file
Hi everyone,
I've set up a few workflow applications to automate the process of making packshots from PDF files. The way those roughly work is they create a temporary copy in a folder, open a Photoshop droplet that executes all the actions on the file, and then save the finished product in a "finished" folder.
However, we frequently need to deliver multiple packshots made from the same file. I was asked to make one automator app that allowed us to drop the PDF version on it, resulting in the multiple types of packshots in the "finished" folder, together with the original PDF.
The way I have this set up right now is as follows:
1) Copy the original PDF file to the "finished" folder
2) Execute the first automator app
3) Execute the second automator app
This seems simple enough, and does work in 10.6.8. When I try it on a different computer in our studio though, with 10.7 installed, I get various errors:
- Sometimes it says an error occured within one of the automator apps, while the app works fine when running it seperately (on all computers).
- Sometimes it says something like "An error occurred while converting the data" when moving on from the first application to the second application
- Sometimes I'll get an error message in the log, saying:
*** -[_NSArrayl objectAtIndex:]: index 0 beyond bounds for empty array
What I got from this is that it's actually not getting the right input it requires (or not getting any input, since it's an empty array). However, the previous task is set to "return the task input" (our systems are Dutch so excuse me for any discrepancies in translations please), and the resulting output that I get seems to be what I want the next automator application to use. Below is a screenshot of the error message:
What I've tried:
- I read somewhere that the newer versions of Automator require the action "Retrieve selected finder items" between them. I've tried using this in various ways (between all other actions/tasks, only before the second application to be run and before both applications to be run), but with no success. The problem I have with these is that, during the applications, it moves the files around, thus apparently selecting those folders as well.
- Building an entirely new workflow on the newer system
- Using "Start application" instead of "Execute Automator workflow". This results in Automator saying that it did execute the workflow while nothing happened.
- Using "Ignore input" for the second application. This also results in Automator saying that it executed the workflow while nothing happened.
So right now, I'm pretty stumped as to how to get this combination of apps to work in 10.7. Any solutions or workarounds are most welcome.
Thanks in advance!Yes, angelanna. You can merge or split your video file via FCP sequence.
ahaah, maybe I think angelanna would like to get the resulting file with MTS format because he mentioned “No need to be compressed”. Are you asking for this, angelanna?
If so, a simple MTS files managing and editing tool is needed. Maybe you can have a try the Mac version of Aunsoft Final Mate for managing HD camcorder footages. I just downloaded its free trial version and it offers a simple way of garping footages directly from camcorder. And also it provides a attractive feature to join flawlessly and split accurately native MTS files for video file output with original MTS format.
Maybe this is the tool cwhich an help you out, angelanna.
Enjoy your video. -
Old Toad's automator workflow to backup Library6.iPhoto database
Dear Old Toad,
I just today downloaded your workflow to backup the iPhoto database file, and am having problems making it work.
When I run it, either from the dock or the script menu, it launches Automator but then closes without doing anything. I don't get a confirmation screen, and no copy of the database is created.
So I opened it in Automator to see if editing it would help, even though my library is already named iPhoto Library and stored in user/pictures. When I dragged it onto the Automator window, there was only 1 action (Get Specified Finder Items) instead of the 4 that show up in the ReadMe. When I dragged it onto the Automator app to open it, I got nothing.
I downloaded it via Firefox 3.0.1 and got a 1.1MB zip, and I tried downloading it twice in case it had corrupted in the download, but no change with the second try. Downloaded from here:
http://web.mac.com/toad.hall/ToadsCellar/ToadsCellar.html
Running OS 10.4.11, iPhoto 7.1.5, on a G4.
Something else I can try?
Thanks,
Daiya
Message was edited by: DaiyaYes. Run the application like you would use the Save command in other applications, often. Running it again will overwrite the current backup copy with a new backup that will include all changes you've made to your library, new pictures, deletions, slideshows, books, etc.
I suggested keeping it in the dock so you can quickly run it after any changes you've made to the library. Being in the Dock makes it more convenient than having to go into the Application folder and launching it from there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
Hi
I have created a workflow for automator to send me an email for birthdays coming up in the next 2 weeks, if i save this as an app it runs fine
But when is put an event into iCal to alarm and open either the automator workflow or application, it doesnt work
I am at a loss as to why ?
Any clues ! (Its on OSX Snow Leopard 10.6 and iWork 09)
Regards
DaveUnless I am mistaken that first action is actually Find Address Book Items in disguise. Once dropped in place the name changes to either Find People or Find Groups depending upon whether it is set to groups or people. That seems to be the step that is causing problems for me. When I remove it the new workflow sends.
Here's what I have right now although it does not give me the option of searching two months ahead like one of my previous workflows did. I added a blank line after Stop If iInput is Empty just to make it easier to read.
Find People with Birthdays
Send Birthday Greetings
Send Outgoing Messages
Stop If Input Is Empty
Find People With Birthdays
Get Contact Information
New Mail Message
Send Outgoing Messages
The block of steps that includes Stop If Input Is Empty sends a birthday greeting to people having a birthday. The second block sends me a confirmation email with the contact information of the people who were sent greetings. If you want to see what the original workflow looks like check out http://www.atpm.com/12.08/automator.shtml -
Automator/Workflow actions are in "slow-motion" under Mac OS X 10.6.x
Hi,
after the update to SL some of my Automator Workflows dont work properly.
I do things like copy some part of sentence from a .rtf document and insert it into a input box of a website in firefox.
In 10.5.8 everything worked like a charm. But in 10.6.x the same workflow (also new created) works some times and the other time it slows down and the cursor moves like a slow-motion. Pixel for pixel and i cannot stop the workflow. I only can wait until the workflow is finished (takes in "slow-down" mode 30 minutes) or i do a hardreset. I wonder if anyone else such of this problems with automator under 10.6
I tested the same things with my mac mini that i didnt upgraded and it works like expected.
I think you can reproduce the behaviour, if you create a new .rtf document with numbers from one to twelve and make a workflow where you mark 4 letters, cut, bring firefox to front, paste into form, go to .rtf, mark next 4 letters, cut, go to firefox, paste into form, doing that until there are no more letters.
very curious...the whole automator and in particular the record action was substantially rewritten in snow leopard. and the record action is slow, unreliable and you can't trouble-shoot it. it's a wonder it works at all. the only advice i can give is to use it as little as possible. if at all possible avoid it altogether. if you do need to use it try using keyboard strokes instead of the mouse movement. for example. use command+c and command+v for copying and pasting and use tabbing to choose the correct box on the page.

AppleScript error -609 in Automator workflow
I created an AppleScript on one computer and incorporated it in an Automator workflow. The script works perfectly well stand-alone or as part of the workflow.
Then I copied both files to a headless computer via VNC. I adjusted the workflow to look at the new location of the script, and the script itself to look at the new location of the file it's processing. Now, on that second computer, the script works perfectly well by itself, but I get AppleScript error -609 Connection Is Invalid if it's run from the workflow.
For testing purposes I reduced the script to its simplest expression:
tell application "Finder"
end tell
and it's still generating the error.
Strangely, from the workflow the full script does what's it's supposed to, but the workflow stops because of the error. The error appears even if this script is alone in the workflow. Does anybody know what it means? That error means that the script wasn't able to communicate with the targeted application properly, which can happen if the application crashes while the script is running. If that error doesn't cause any problems, it's appearance can be suppressed:
try
(your code)
on error number -609
end try
This construct will not execute any code on or after the line which produces the error.

Simple (you would think) Automator workflow
Hi all,
I have been using Mac for the last 3 years. I have a very good knowledge of computers in general, Unix/Linux in particular but I have never used Automator. I would like to create a very simple application in Automator: when I click on the application icon I want to see a form in which I type the name of a song and as a result I want to see a window that contains all the music files that match that name.
I have no problem in creating this as a unix shell script and I know I can use spotlight (the problem with spotlight is that everytime I have to type the search string, click on Show All, then refine the search by setting Kind=Music etc.)
So I thought it would be a piece of cake to do it in Automator.
I'm using the action "Find Finder Items" with "Name Contains" AND "Kind is Audio". If I run this in automator I get the results I want (if I click on the Results tab). However, when I save it as Application and then double click on it, I get the input window in which I can specify the name of the songs I'm looking for (so far so good) but then nothing appears, the application seems to terminate correctly but I am never presented with the results.
I have tried to add a "Reveal Finder Items" after the first action but that's not what I want as it opens one window for each file that matches my search and each window shows all files, with the one I'm looking for highlighted.
What I need is something similar to spotlight, I want a window to open, showing all files that match. I know I can add more actions and for example copy all files that match into a specific folder then open the folder, but that's a dirty way of solving my problem and a bit of an overkill. Aliases would be slightly better, but still not exactly what I want.
This is driving me crazy, you would think it should be a very easy thing to accomplish with Automator...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
/Pippothanks, but it still doesn't do what I want.
1) not all my music is in iTunes, so I can't use the Find in iTunes action
2) adding a Choose from List (as you suggested) after the Find Finder Items now shows me a list of all matches, so that is an improvement, thanks, but I stil can't do anything with that. What I need is a Finder window with the result of the search so that I can simply QuickView the song (or copy it or whatever)
3) using the Finder search is similar to using spotlight, it doesn't do what I want, I don't want to have to type each time that I'm only looking for songs.
I just want an Automator workflow that:
1) asks for a file name
2) searches my computer for audio files that match the name
3) shows the result in a window where I can then work with the files.
it really bugs me that I can't make Automator perform such a simple workflow, I'm sure I'm missing some obvious action.
please help
TIA

Automator/Workflow slow downs under Mac OS X 10.6
Hi,

irritating.... let me know if you find a fix or if we just have to wait for 10.6.1.... -
Automator workflow stopped working after 10.6.6
I have an automator workflow which has worked flawless for the last 6 months. It's pretty simple, only does two things
1. Upload files to ftp (files/dirs that are dropped on the icon)
2. Runs a shell script which in turn executes a java program
Suddenly, after upgrading to 10.6.6 the workflow doesn't finish. It halts somewhere on the second action. If I run this manually in a terminal window it works flawless. Any ideas?I have the same problem... What's more, my automator.app won't even start... This is my console output... Apple REALLY blew it with the 10.6.6 installer... I ran the combo updater TWICE... I even moved all my apps back to where Apple expects to find them, as they didn't bother to look for apps if you dared to organize your app folder like you want it...
I only know of ONE OS company that releases updates that are done this badly... I won't mention their name, as they have enough marketing... Thing is, I never expected APPLE to act like them...
Here's my console output when I start Automator...

Include subfolders in an automator workflow?
<Thanks HD for showing me the way in>
I created an automator workflow to backup one of the folders on my desktop.
The problem is, if I add a file to one of the subfolders automator does not backup the folder contents. The workflow works only if I add an item to the folder in the top of the heirarchy. What should I do?
the applescript generated by automator is
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
tell application "Macintosh HD:Users:myUserName:Library:Workflows:Applications:Folder Actions:Backup2Tiger.app"
open added_items
end tell
end adding folder items toHi,
You'd have to attach the action to the subfolder as well. Control-click on the sub-folder, choose Attach a Folder Action from popup menu, and then navigate to your folder action.
It might be possible to modify the folder action so that it attaches itself to any folder dropped onto the original. I'll have a play with it this evening.
Cheers,

Application has disappeared, turning into automator workflow
I usually can get to the bottom of a problem like this without any assistance, but this has me stymied.
In my applications folder, I've had and used for years, a Photoshop application pure and simple. But recently, when I tried to access it, I found that it always opened as an Automator workflow (having a reference to the Photoshop app). The Photoshop icon had been replaced with a workflow icon. Get Info on that workflow identifies it as the Photoshop application, with an appropriate size of some 50 MB.
I've used Automator a few times, but not for a long time, and I don't recollect having created a workflow referencing Photoshop. But I thought little of this, as I have two backups of the main
drive and an install disk for the Photoshop.
I did find the Photoshop application on both of the backups. I tried to copy those to the Applications Folder on the main drive, with the maddening result that the Photoshop app turned into an Automator workflow on all three drives!
Using the CD originally used to install Photoshop, I set out to re-install it. But the CD contents (which can't be changed) now show only the Automator workflow!
As the most recent step, I trashed Automator on one drive, but that made no difference whatsoever -- except now I get an Alert saying that the workflow file cannot be opened on this machine.
What on earth might be going on here?Get Info on that workflow identifies it as the Photoshop application, with an appropriate size of some 50 MB.
Hmmm, my Adobe Photoshop CS3.app is 59.3MB inside the Package contents, but 217MB for the Package Adobe Photoshop CS3.app
I think you have some corruption, how much I don't know, but...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
Reset Launch Services...
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive. -
Automator workflow launches itself all the time - even after being trashed!
I created a while back a automator workflow that I would use to crop images (in order to use them as avatars online). It didn't work so well so I trashed it.
My problem is that now, whenever I save a .pdf file or a .doc file, said workflow will launch itself. Of course, my computer cannot find it (it is long gone). I don't know how I can stop my computer from remembering it. Obviously I haven't trashed it completely. What can I do? It is starting to get really annoying.I'm not a power user when it comes to Automator, so I might sound a little silly with my explanations. Also, I might not remember it all perfectly.
I'm pretty sure I trashed the .app I created. And by trashing I mean putting it in the trash and emptying the trash. When I discovered it was still launching itself, I used Spotlight to locate another file (I think it was in the library) that sported the same name but with a different extension (not sure what it was, but the icon was a blank page). I trashed it the same way, but it didn't do the trick.
To sum it up I trashed all the files that had the name of that stupid workflow and it is still out there. -
Automator Workflow returns Applescript Error.
I recently created an automator workflow that will allow me to play an internet radio station without opening a browser. The workflow is…
• Get Specified URL's (with the radio station's live streaming URL)
• Website Popup (displays a window that plays the radio station)
Simple enough. And it worked fine.
So I thought, let's make this more useful. Let's add a second URL to the "Get Specified URL's" action, and options "Show this action when the workflow runs." Then I can select the radio station I want to listen to from the list.
Now, when I run the workflow, I get the list of URL's to select from. When I click to select one, I get an "Applescript Error. AppleEvent Handler Failed -10000. That's the whole message. Nothing else.
Now, this still works. When I click "OK" the workflow continues, brings up my popup window, and plays my radio station. But it's just an annoyance to have that AppleScript Error message pop up. Even more strange, (IMO) is that fact that if I leave both radio stations selected, there is no AppleScript Error, and my workflow defaults to the first radio station.
BTW, the workflow is only these two automator actions. I did not add any Applescript of my own. And it's definitely the first action that's generating this message. It's the "click" that generates that message.
Any ideas?Actually, I was referring to it's use in this case, since you are only going to select one item from the list - it isn't set up very well for selecting individual items. The resulting list should really be limited to one item, since allowing multiple selections might get interesting, but there isn't a handy way to do that. Using "Open URL" isn't a very good option either, since it leaves the workflow running.
The error seems to be related to the checkboxes, so you might try an end run by using the *Choose from List* action, which doesn't have the problem:
1) *Get Specified URLs* -- don't show the action when run
2) *Choose from List* -- make the selection here
3) *DIsplay Webpages* -
Automator workflow to an apple script
Hello,
i have a few problems with the automator utility:
1. my automator work flow is to open an application and type a password.
the problem is when i recored and i'm typing the password, after i'm running the workflow seems that its not possible to type password, is there a way to type password while recording?
2. i have an automator workflow and i wish to convert it to an apple script.
after i've copy paste it to the apple script editor it seems to be the workflow but when i running the
script it not running.
please help...
Rafi.Since you're using Mail, you might be able to have Mail do it.
You can set up a rule in Mail in its preferences to match an email with unique characteristics, such as certain content or a certain subject exactly. You might want to add a few conditions and "match all" to make sure you don't accidentally match something else.
Anyways, you choose to have the rule run an AppleScript. I haven't tested it by referencing an Automator workflow, but it might work. You might try a quick test first with a simple workflow.
You'd have to be logged in and have Mail automatically check for email, perhaps every minute or every five minutes. If you don't want to be logged in, likely you'll need to use a web page, like you suggested. I'm not sure what you need to do for that to work. -
Automator workflow "run shell script" keeps running. How to stop?
Because i want two instances of dropbox running simultaneously on my Mac, I set up a small automator workflow application. The workflow consist of a simple shell script:
Or in text:
bash
HOME=$HOME/Dropbox-quivertree /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox &
The problem is that once the application runs, or i execute the script from within automator, it just keeps running (i get the little cog in my menubar). Anybody have an idea how to automatically stop after it has launched dropbox?
Thanks!
KimI do not have dropbox on my computer, so I tested using the Calculator application. The solution proposed by Mattis S.F. does work, but his explanation does not hold true in my case. Initially, I successfully tried
HOME=$HOME/Dropbox-quivertree nohup /Applications/Calculator.app/Contents/MacOS/Calculator >/dev/null 2>&1 &
If I remove the “nohup”, the result does not change. Removal of the “/dev/null 2>&1”, however, results in the same problem originally described by Kim van der Leeuw. My guess is the background process has stdout and stderr redirected by default back to the automator. When redirected to /dev/null, the automator no longer waits for the background process to complete. To summarize, change
HOME=$HOME/Dropbox-quivertree /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox &
to
HOME=$HOME/Dropbox-quivertree /Applications/Dropbox.app/Contents/MacOS/Dropbox >/dev/null 2>&1 &

IPod Touch, iOS6, "Other" memory increasing every sync?
I have noticed that since the "update" to 6.0, my iPod touch has an increasing amount of "other" memory with every sync. The amount of "other" increases by about 400 mb every time I sync it. Even when I synced it twice in a row with no new podcasts o
