Exfat drive does not free up space after deleting files

My external exfat formatted drive does not free up space after deleting files using a mac....however if I delete files using a PC, it will free up space.
I've even tried the *erase free space* using Disk Utility, but nothing.....
Thoughts/Suggestions??

Thanks for the suggestion.
I ran WhatSize and here is the result. Oddly, it says there is 40.2 GB used (in the top-left) which conflicts with the information directly below it: "Capacity 108 GB, Used 103GB, Available 4.27 GB". Not so helpful.
Disk Inventory X solved the problem, however. Much thanks! I wasted most of my weekend troubleshooting this sad issue. Anyway, Disk Inventory X revealed a bug where my external hard drive for photos was still appearing as a mounted volume, even though the HD was no longer connected. Freaky.
After moving it to the trash and deleting it, I've recovered the space.
Again, thanks! Contact me if you're curious about the details, as this might help you diagnose similar problems in the future.

  • Help needed: Disk space does not free up even after deleting files.

Background information for this problem: I have my iPhoto library on an external HD, and was importing files from that same drive into iPhoto, and began receiving messages that I was very low on disk space on my internal HD. From here, it seemed like iPhoto was using my boot drive for some kind of cache. Regardless of the actual reason, I began moving files from my internal HD to fix this problem temporarily (while I was importing).
At this point, I started fiddling with my files and found that no matter how many files I would delete from my HD, the available space in the finder would not free up. *At this point, I have less than 20GB on my HD, yet it says I have 1.23 GB available out of 108 GB.*
Here is what I have already tried to fix the problem, to no avail:
    a) Original user was using Filevault. I backed up all the files, created a new user without Filevault, and restored the files.
    b) Booted from CD and used Disk Utility to erase free space.
    c) Verified and fixed permissions
    d) Deleted all app and system caches (via CacheOut X)
    e) Fixed/Repaired all user/system preferences (via Preferential Treatment)
*Does anyone have any idea what's going on?*

  • External HD won't free-up space after deleting files

Hello. My old Maxtor 500 Gb external hard-drive won't free-up any space after deleting many, many files. I'm using a late 2009 iMac i5 desktop with Snow Leopard. I had 6 Time Machine backups of my old MacBook Pro on the drive - each taking up roughly 70-80 Gb of space. I deleted 3 of the Time Machine backups as they were close enough in date to other backups so I wasn't going to lose any data. This should have freed up more than 200 Gb of space on the external hard drive. However, the hard drive still shows having only 10 Gb of space available. I deleted the Trash from the Dock. The Trash is empty. I unmounted the hard drive, turned it off and reconnected it. I restarted the computer. Still no change. Please help me. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions-
Are you using FileVault? If so, you have to log out or restart in order for the disk space to be reclaimed.

  • Nas drive does not recalculating space after deleting files on Nas Drive??

    Greetings to Respected expert,
Actually we have configure Window server 20082 Storage server. We have NAS drive configured which have 300GB quota limit. The actual data in the folder is 185 GB but it shows only 15 GB free and shows a warning .Please assist me why NAS server does not re-calculate
the space after deleting files or does not leave space. Pardon me if I am not able to clear you my problems.this is very urgent for me.
    Thanks And Regards
    Rajnish Singh

    Hi Rajnish,
As you mentioned "quota limit", it is set via FSRM or specific function on NAS?
Meanwhile could you confirm the number 185GB is accurate? Sometimes a part of used space is just not calculated. You can confirm with checking the total space on NAS locally.
If the number is correct and quota is set via FSRM, check if it is the Disk Quota which not re-calculated the released space. Try to clear the Quota setting and reconfig with 300GB limitation and see if issue still exists.

  • My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive

My backup hard drive does not have enough space for time machine to perform a back up even after erasing entire contents of bu hard drive.  The hard drive has been in service for almost two years performing this function with no sign of failure.  How do I adjust time machine perameters?

The only way to limit the size of the backup is to exclude data from the backup, which you can do in Time Machine preferences.
If you use multiple browsers, have you tried clearing your browser caches? However, that's just a stop gap if it works. You either need to limit what you backup or get another drive.

  • Hard Drive does not have enough space/error message

Hello: I am new to Mac but have been having trouble with my iMac for a while. I can no longer download my software updates. I have an error message that states "Your hard drive does not have enough space" - 5.7 GB is required.
I only have a 1 GB machine. What am I doing wrong?
When I go to my Macintosh HD icon on the desktop, it says at the bottom of that window that I have 495.9 MB available.
The error message tells me to go to the Startup file to delete items. I go there, but there's only two files. I do have music/photos/but I do not understand what's going on with my computer.
In addition, it turns itself off often, for no apparent reason. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    J.Renee

The error refers to space on your hard drive, not memory. Unless you've mis-typed, if you have only 495.9 MBs free on your hard drive then you are definitely out of space. If you continue operating with so little free space you are risking a catastrophic loss of data.
To free up space you will either need to delete unneeded personal files or copy some of your bigger files off to an external hard drive then delete them from your internal drive. Alternatively you can replace the internal drive with a larger drive.
You should maintain no less than 15 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater.
If you meant to type 495.9 GBs then you may have a corrupted disk directory. Try the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Deleting from USB does not free up space

I have a USB flash memory drive and when I delete files from it for some reason the space that the file used is not freed up. For example if I delete a file that is 6MB it will still say that 6MB is in use even though I have deleted it. I exchanged the drive for a different one but I am having the same problem with the new one. Any suggestions (other than going in to disk utility every time to erase the whole thing)?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks. I got this far, too. I emptied the trash and the 'get info' for a SanDisk USB flash drive shows that it is empty (249.7 MB available). When I tried to load 103 photos all at once I get the "not enough space" message. When I load the files in increments of 5-10 files it works up to a point and then I get the "not enough free space" message, when I try to load one more file. This is after I've loaded about 103 MB onto the drive. Yet, when I 'get info' on the flash drive it shows plenty of space still available.
I have even checked the USB flash drive on a windows machine as well and it also indicates the same amount of free space.
    Any suggestions?

  • Deleting videos does not free up space

I recently recorded a handful of videos (about 15 minutes worth) that brought my iPhone to full capacity. I deleted them, but didn't notice much space getting cleared up. I needed to record some more videos last night, and noticed I did not have enough space, so I connected to iTunes and unchecked "sync all music" to remove my music from the phone. This freed up about 1.5 gigs of space, enough to record what I needed. I noted at this time in my settings under Usage, that my "Photos and Camera" was listing 3.1 GB. I recorded the videos I needed, synced them to my computer, and deleted them, but now I'm still seeing my "Photos & Camera" as 5.1 GB, and I no longer have any free space, and cannot put my music back on my phone.
I have double checked to make sure they are stuck in iCloud somewhere (My Photo Stream is turned off) and I have quit the Photos and Camera applications, done a Soft Reset, synced with iTunes, but to no avail, I can't seem to get my space back! I couldn't find anyone else having the same issue, but it was hard to find search words that didn't turn up posts about upgrading iOS (which I also need to do!).
Is this a known issue? Is there any way to do a trash collection on the iPhone that will clear up unlinked memory? It's quite a bit of a problem for me to not have any more available space on my Phone even though I deleted the things that were previously taking it up!

Go back into the "Photos" app. Go to "Albums".   Are your videos etc  still sitting there in "Recently deleted" ?   If they are - delete them from there too.

  • Why Oracle Linux 5 cannot recover disk space after delete files ?

    Folks,
Hello. When I create a Virtual Machine for Oracle Linux 5 to install EBS R12, I allocate 300GB to the VM. I download EBS R12 Source Files (45.7GB) and unzip the files (46GB). Total size of stage area directory(EBS_R12) is 91.7GB.
Because some files are corrupted and cannot install, I move the folder EBS_R12 into trash but cannot empty trash. I move EBS_R12 from trash back to the directory. Then at root user, use command "rm -rf " to delete EBS_R12 completely.
I shut down Oracle Linux 5 and restart it, 91.7GB disk space cannot recover.
I download some other files into Oracle Linux files and then delete those files, but disk space cannot be recovered either.
It seems that OEL5 virtual disk only can expand but cannot be reduced. The VM disk space is less than 200GB now and not enough to install EBS R12.
Can any folks tell me how to make 91.7GB disk space and some more disk space come up ?

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
Host OS is Windows 7, Guest OS is Oracle Linux 5 on the top of VMPlayer 3. The VM of Oracle Linux 5 is created on the external USB drive and not on the local hard disk.
There is a directory /tmp/VMwareDnd/376c7cae/EBS_R12 in Oracle Linux 5 file system. I copy/Paste the folder of EBS_R12 from Windows 7 into Oracle Linux 5. All of zip files and unzipped files are placed in the folder of EBS_R12.
After EBS_R12 is deleted, the external USB drive(F:) doesn't come up 91.7GB disk space.
    My question is:
Where to run "boot>linux rescue" command ?
Does this command work correctly in the external USB drive ?

  • Recovering disk space after deleting files.

    Hello,
I am used to using Panther and now I'm using Leopard. When I deleted files then emptied the trash and later logged out or shut down it would ask me do I want to recover the disk space on my drive, then once this is finished I could see the more space on my hard drive. I find now that with Leopard I have deleted a lot of old music etc that I copied over and I have emptied the trash but the file space doesn't get reclaimed. So, my question is: does emptying the trash really delete the fills or is there something I need to do additionally to get the disk space back once I delete something.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem. I transferred and deleted several gigs of music and photo files but the hard drive is not recognizing the free space. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  • Reclaiming ipod space after deleting files

I have just deleted a load of non-music or photo files from my 60GB Photo ipod in order to free up some space for more music but that doesn't seem to have made any difference to the available disc space. Am I missing something here? I am a bit reluctant to reset my ipod...

Yes, you are in Discussions>iPod nano>Using your iPod nano.
I would like to know how to use it as an external

  • Disk not showing free space after deleting files?

Hi there. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I deleted about 20GB worth of data from my hard drive but when I go into activity monitor and click on disk usage it doesn't show an extra 20GB of space. I did this 2 days ago. Is there something wrong with my hard drive? There is nothing in the trash and I have restarted my laptop twice now. Also, I use Daisy Disk to show my usage and it says the same thing as activity monitor. Thanks in advance!

“You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed."

  • Deleting IM and mail messages does not free up space

I have a 250mb of available storage on my iphone 5.  My big usages are in Photos& Camera (3.8GB), Messages (2.6GB), Music (1.3 GB), and Mail (1 GB).  I've deleted all my sent and trash emails, many pictures and videos, and almost all of my text/IM messages.  But, the amount of space occupied by these apps NEVER goes down! No matter what I deleted, the storage usage by these apps stays the same!!  Help!

I exchange short videos of golf swings and pics on IM and email as well.  But most of these have all been deleted.  The problem is that no matter what I delete no space is freed up.

  • After 10.9.4 upgrade, can't recover free space after deleting files

After upgrading to 10.9.4, I decided to backup about 250 Go of films on an external drive, and then I deleted the originals ones on my MacBook Pro. The files disappear, but the free space stayed the same: more than 250 Go of free space couldn't be recovered !!
I generally use the program "Cocktail" to maintain the mac; but in that case, no solution.
I decided to look for the films on the disk, on temp folders and with Spotlight. And I found them ! In the folder: Volumes/HardiskName/.cleverfiles/hlink.ref/
I deleted them directly in the trash and ... I recovered my 250 Go of free space.

That folder is created by the third-party application "Disk Drill." If you don't like what it does, remove it according to the developer's instructions. "Cocktail" is worthless and should be removed in any case.
