ExFAT external usb disk not working in Lion?

Hi, I used to be able to read/write to an external usb disk, exFAT formatted, using Snow Leopard.
Since upgrading to Lion I can't seem to be able to find the disk anymore on the desktop/finder. When I go into Disk Utility it sees it but thats pretty much all it will do. Anyone knows of this issue or how to fix it?
Thanks
Richard

I am encountering a similar issue where I can read but not write to an exFAT volume (connected over FireWire 800) in the Finder.  While I don't know of a fix, opening a Terminal and using CP to move files seems to work.

You need to get some software that allows your Mac to read and write to the NTFS disk.  There's a whole bunch of stuff out there, but this program has a good review, and you can try it for free.  I would move everything off of your external drive, reformat it into Mac OSX extended, and use it for your Mac.  You don't need NTFS anymore, unless you still have a Windows computer that needs it.

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with external hard drive not working on Lion?

As for everyone else external hard drive does not work with Lion.
When will Apple fix this problem. Do they just ignore the customer : (

Copy off all your data off the NTFS formatted drive to another drive
Open Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder
Select your external NTFS drive on the far left,  should have the drive makers name, a ID perhaps plus the word "media"
Click the Partition Tab, click the big box and click 1 Partition
If you want a Mac only drive > Option: GUID >format OS X Extended (Journaled)
If you want a Mac/PC drive (for over 4GB sized files) > Option: MBR > format exFAT
If you want a Mac/PC drive (for the most compatibility with other devices, Win XP, but only under 4GB sized files) > Option: MBR > format MSDOS (FAT or FAT32)
Give it a name and click Apply.
You can also search Microsoft for a free exFAT download if you have Win XP.

  • Time Machine times-out on external USB disk, but works on 2 others

    Hello,
I wanted to share my experience, in case it is helpful to someone else. It appears that one of my external hard disks has a hardware fault, or that TM is overly sensitive to its state, thus preventing me using it for backup.
After upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on my Macbook Pro 2.16GHz, I had been trying over the last couple of days, without success, to backup using Time Machine to an external USB hard disk at work. It is a Maxtor disk in a BlueEye U235 case. On each attempt to make the initial backup, TM would copy between 2 and 25GB of data (of 75 total) to the disk, and then stall indefinately, without giving an error. (Ejecting the disk at this point and restarting the computer just lead to further problems with completing the backup that I won't go into here). I tried many times, each time reformatting the disk (with the GUID partition map), deleting the TM preference file, restarting and ensuring all other apps were not running. I was completely fed-up!
I subsequently tried backing up for the first time on a freshly re-partitioned (GUID map) Firewire 400 external disk (Prolific PL3507 Combo Device in a BlueEye O2 case) at home, and this worked perfectly the first time, taking a couple of hours. (All applications were closed at the time). Subsequent backups to this drive work fine.
I tried again with the disk at work and it continued to fail. Finally I decided to follow what was being thrown up to the system.log. I discovered that shortly after TM was stalling (somewhere between 10 and 40 mins after commencing the backup), repeated messages would appear in system.log saying "kernel IOSCSIPeripheralDeviceType00::setPowerState(0x4cbe100, 2 -> 1) timed out after 100683 ms" (with the "2 - > 1" and number of ms different each time), with a few minutes between each one. This suggested to me that there was some sort of intermittent failure of the disk, or the connection between the Macbook Pro and the disk, or something I don't understand. It is worth keeping in mind that this disk has been working perfectly for me - I've been backup up entire system to it every couple of days using SuperDuper, without any errors or problems.
So, I then tried using a different (LaCie) Firewire disk at work, and after reformatting / partitioning (GUID map), the backup to this worked perfectly the first time, with the entire ~68 GB completing in about 2 hours. (As an aside, switching between the TM backup disks at Home and Work works well - TM just catches up from where it last left off on the particular drive).
The message I wanted to convey is that, in my experience, TM may fail during a backup (stall in fact, as no explicit message was generated) to a disk that outwardly appears to be fully functional. I'm not sure if in my case there is a minor error with the disk, a fault with TM, or both. Interestingly, upon bringing the disk home today and switching it on it won't mount at all, on my computer or that of my partner. I'm not sure if the problems with TM were therefore indicative of imminent disk failure, or whether the trip home in the pannier on my bike has damaged the drive . So, if you're having this or some other difficulty, on a drive that you haven't purchased new, it may be worth considering that an unsuccessful TM backup may be due to a current, or imminent, problem with the disk.
    Just my two cents worth.

Yes, I think you have a good point. The motivation for my post was just to make people aware - as there seems to be many people having problems with TM - that maybe the first drive you try, particularly if it is not new, may not work and that it is worth trying another if you can. Particularly in light of the fact that I didn't receive any explicit error messages, that is other than the one in the system.log file.
The USB disk was powered separately and was plugged directly into one of my USB ports (not via a hub). At the same time a USB mouse was plugged in. I think it is USB 2, but I'm not sure, and as it is not working now, I don't know how to check.
The rate at which data is copied to the two drives that work (via Firewire 400) seemed to be quite similar to the rate for the USB drive, until it bombed out.

  • External hard disk not working

Hi, i have a hard disk that is connected via usb. It worked recently and still does on a PC but not accessible or even showing in iMac. Anybody know what i have to do to get it working again?

How is the disk formatted and has it ever worked on your iMac? I suspect it's formatted for the PC as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you must share this disk with both your PC and Mac then you should first determine how it's formatted and if it can be shared. In the event it's formatted as most external HD's for NTFS then I'd recommend downloading and installing NTFS-3G will allow the Mac to write to it. You can find this at:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
If it's a simple matter of not being seen by the Mac then try resetting the SMC, don't be afraid to reset it 2-3x if the first time doesn't work.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External hard-disk not working with firewire under Snow Leopard

Hi. I have a LaCie d2 external hard-disk that has Firewire 800, 400 and usb2. I previously used it on my old (angle-poise) iMac connecting using the Firewire 400 socket. I've just a got a new mac with Snow Leopard and I thought it would we best to connect to the LaCie with Firewire 800. However when I do this, the disc mounts ok, but browsing in the Finder is really slow and copying files from the disk to the imac seems to work at a really slow rate (less than USB1 speed) if at all ! However, I switched to using the USB2 connection instead and it works like a dream. What gives ? Is Firewire in Snow Leopard buggy ??

There's no problem with the drive.
Maybe true, and the drive would probably work fine with Leopard. One thing that's obvious is that Apple did make changes in the way that FireWire works in Snow Leopard. Many drives and drive manufacturers work well with SL, but there have also been reports of firmware issues by Western Digital and other companies.
Have you checked with your vendor to see if they are offering a firmware update for your drive?
BTW, I got a new FW case a few months ago while at a Fry's electronic store. The brand new USB2 and FW400 cables worked fine. The FW800 cable did not, but another cable came to the rescue. Just saying...

  • Iomega external USB drive not working

Hello, I have a K8n neo4f board, 1.9 bios, AMD64x2 4400. For some strange reason my external USB drive doesn't work with this setup. I get i/o or insufficient resource errors, and the system will hang. This is puzzling since I have plenty of system resources available (2G ram), and my USB inputs work with other devices. I currently have a dvd drive, ir receiver, memory card adapter, and a cordless mouse receiver plugged in. All of these devices work flawlessly. There is nothing wrong with the external drive, it works with my Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop. Is this a bios issue, should I upgrade to the latest 1b ? I'm hesitant of doing so, because of the horror stories I've read in this forum of systems becoming unuseable. Maybe someone with a similar problem can help me out.

Are you sure this is not software related .

  • External usb microphone not working with FaceTime and mac mini with os x Yosemite

    Hello
When I try to do a phone call with face time through my iphone 6 face time is not recognizing my external usb microphone connected to my mac mini. I have just updated my mac mini to os x Yosemite. If I go to the audio system preferences and look to the audio input signal I can see that the external microphone (SB Omni Surround 5.1) is working (audio input level is showing an input signal).
Can someone help. I saw that this was also an issue in the beta versions of Yosemite.
    Thanks.
    BR Stefan

Interesting.  I don't have a USB mic on the Mac Pro.  Its the OLD FireWire 300 iSight.  It works for FaceTime calls but not the iPhone call via the FaceTime app.
I also have 2010 MBP that works perfectly, even since the first Public Beta.  I'm to sure if that mic is considered an external USB device or not, or if it has to do with device signatures vs. external or internal.  I would almost assume that the built-in mic is on the USB bus.  How would it be any different than the external USB.
I think I have to agree that this is a point release bug.  I have submitted a bug report at bugreport.apple.com, and would ask others to do the same, or at least post to apple.com/feedback.  The more noise we make through process the more likely to get a fix in the .1 release.

  • How does the security model work for external USB disks attached to an AEBS

I've attached a USB disk to my AEBS after partitioning it first on my MBP using Disk Utility. I created a single partition with a GUID partition table covering the entire disk. Next I deselected the "Ignore ownership on this volume" checkmark and assigned myself and my wife read/write access, my group read access, and the rest no access. Next, I hooked it up to the AEBS and created some test files. I noticed in Terminal that the files I created all had rwx access for user, group and others. Trying to chmod that into something less open, like rwx for me, rx for the group and nothing for others didn't work. Also I noticed that when I was logged in the files I had created had my name as the owner, but when my wife logged in, those same files were owned by my wife.
What is happening here ? Who is the actual owner of the files on the external USB disk on my AEBS, and what are the real access rights (as they seem to depend on the actual user). On my AEBS I've setup "File sharing", "With accounts" and created accounts for both me and my wife, as well as disabled guest account access.
I get the impression that the owner and access rights seem to depend on the actual user connected to the AEBS, but I'm not sure.
Can anybody please enlighten me on the subject of AEBS access rights/ownership for USB disks ?
    With kind regards,
    Aloy

All that I can provide is what has worked for me for years.
The Time Capsule is setup as the router for the network, connected to a simple Zoom 5431J cable modem.
Static Internet IP connection from the cable provider is 12.34.567.89
By default, the Time Capsule is at 10.0.1.1 on the local network
Port Mapping setup for the Time Capsule is......
    Public UDP Port 8884
    Public TCP Ports 8884
    Private IP 10.0.1.1
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The hard drive on the Time Capsule is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8884
The AirPort Extreme is connected by Ethernet to the Time Capsule and is it setup to operate in Bridge Mode
The AirPort Extreme always receives a reserved local IP address of 10.0.1.2 from the Time Capsule
The Port Mapping setup (on the Time Capsule) looks like this for the AirPort Extreme.......
    Public UDP Port 8888
    Public TCP Port 8888
    Private IP  10.0.1.2
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The USB hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8888
If you are still having difficulty, I would delete all of Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule and Update the Time Capsule. Then, go back and setup the Port Mapping for the Time Capsule, check that to make sure that it is working, then setup the Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule for the AirPort Extreme.
