EXFAT on 10.5.8

Ok so i have 2 Mac's one mini and a mackbook pro. the pro is running 10.6.6 and the mini is running 10.5.8 i have an external hard drive in exfat format and i can read and write to it. when i plug it into the mini it will not read it.
I have looked online and cant seem to find a solution. i know there ar ways to partition the drive but i have almost 500gb of info on the drive, aside from buying another harddrive and moving everything to it is there a way i can get 10.5.8 to read exfat with some software or something. looks like exfat just started to be supported by mac's in 10.6.4!
Please Help

Ok here is the other problem i want to use the mini as a media hub and have the hard drive connected to it at all times. if i use file share it has to be hooked up to my macbook. an yes it is a ppc so no go on the upgrade i wish the just left the ppc code in 10.6

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • My exfat hard drive doesn't work on my macbook pro

It's the latest macbook pro. Bought yesterday!! Excited!! Thanks

    sorry.
It's a WD harddrive. I used to you it for my mac desktop. I have then had a pc laptop for a couple of years. I have had to use macdrive to allow this to work. I thought that when I would plug it into my macbook it should work fine.
It's now showing it is an exfat format. I have read reviews that this should work well on mac and windows?
To find the external harddrive on the mac I need to go to disk utilities and I can see it. It does not allow me to access what is on it though.
i'm trying to think of what I can do so I can use it on the mac book. If I copy it onto a different hardrive, then reformat it. How would I then get it back onto my mac?
Sorry. Hope that helps a little more? Thanks for your time.

  • ExFAT External Drive not recognized and unrepairable

Please help me. I have a Seagate external 2 TB USB 3 drive. I was backing up files to it from my MBP mid 2013 running Mavericks. I ejected it but forgot to wait for the "safe to remove" message. When plugging back in, the drive doesn't mount and fsck and Disk Utility is unable to repair/mount/verify. Another thread suggested to use Windows 7 to repair the disk but Chkdsk and the GUI Disk Checker are also unable to repair and fix errors, but at least it mounts on Windows. I don't believe it is a hardware fault because I was using a WD 1 TB drive on the same MBP but upgraded to Yosemite, and again I was distracted and forgot to wait for the message and the same thing happened to it. The funny thing is that the WD is formatted to 2 partitions, one ExFAT and one Mac OS extended, and the only unreadable partition is the ExFAT one. I refuse to believe that ExFAT is such a fragile file system that a simple mistake can completely brick it (on OSX), I also refuse to believe that to use something on my OSX in need to rely upon a Windows 7 based solution.
    Thanks in advance

I find it hard to belive that a hack of a file system designed primarily for flash-based drives is fragile. I also find it hard to believe that you think using Windows to fix a proprietary file system created by Microsoft is somehow unbelievable.

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

  • I cannot connect my external hard drives (1 WD My Passport and 1 LaCie Porsche Design). The drives were connected and worked perfect, the WD is used as a Time Capsule, the LaCie is formatted as exFAT and used for miscellaneous. They are both USB 3.0

I cannot connect my external hard drives any longer. I have one WD "My Passport" used as a Time Capsule and one LaCie Porsche Design used for all different kind of data, formatted in exFAT. They worked fine, connected direct or through an additional USB hub or also attached to a Dell monitor. The Lacie helds my iTunes Library and the iPhoto library.
After I moved the iTunes library to the external drive, from time to time the drive went into a never ending loop and I had to shut down the laptop (MacBook Air).
The last time starting again the drives were not recognized any longer. I tried to connect them to another MacBook, which didn't work.
Starting with Windows 7, the WD is also not recognized at all (perhaps because of time capsule format?) and the LaCie gives an error.
Could anybody tell me if there is a chance to get them alive again? When I connect them now, they start to heat up quite fast without anything else happening.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Just want to clarify, have you checked to make sure the cords are not damaged  (going from hard drive to computer and or any power source )?
You have also check to make sure that usb ports are working correctly?
If you have checked these things it may be that the external drives have failed.
I would google the error message from the LaCie drive before I do anything.
There are several ways that I know of,  one is to put the hard drive in the freezer for a while (make sure you wrap it air tight) if this works it is not a permenint fix. You might be able to transfer information to another source.
The other method is to plug the hard drive into a hard drive connector a product like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817707192
to do this you would have to remove the hard drive from its enclosure and still this is not a guarantee it will work.
The finally way I know is using a recovery service. This can be rather expensive, and  there are no guarantees

  • Can't see external exFAT hard drive in finder - but can see it under disk utility

    I have tried it all.
Running Mac Air OS X Lion 10.7.3 - connected to wifi network via 3TB Time Capsule. Just bought an external HDD for moving around. Formatted as exFAT and loaded files from a friends Windows 7 PC. Tried to plug into TC but couldn't see it neither in Finder nor Time Machine. Then plugged it directly into Mac Air, still not visible under Finder. Tried the following without much success either:
    - Used the Verify & Repair functions in Disc Utility: No errors found
    - Tried to Mount in Disc Utility: Refused (advised to run First Aid) - Ran first aid twice and still can't mount
    - Used various apple scripts to unhide it: still not visible
    - Went to Finder - Go - Computer: Still not visible
I'm now creating an image of the disc with the hope that I can mount the disc and acccess the files in it. Should this not work (and I have a strange feeling that it wont), what can I do (without the need to format the drive?)
    Thanks

  • WD 1TB not recognised on 13" macbook pro retina (late 2013) even though it is exFAT file structure. The same drive is recognised on iMac and an old Dell laptop. I also have a seagate 2TB external hard drive (powered) that is recognised by my macbook pro.

I just bought a late 2013 macbook pro retina 13" a few days ago. I am trying to transfer all my music from my old Dell laptop. I formatted by 1TB Western Digital MyPassport to exFAT to allow read and write on both operating systems. Is there a pattern to the time of day or other detail that may be
traced back to a OS X system cause of this odd phenomenon?
Are there any copies of system files on any of the attached USB
external drives? Any libraries, such as iTunes, iPhoto, etc?
Once the drives are indexed by Spotlight, are their permissions
ignored by the OS X? Content, if neutral, should not affect the
wake or sleep cycle; especially if they're ignored by the OS X.
Could there be a bad cable or other component? If so that would
be a difficult process of elimination to detect it. Usually replacing
most suspect components in the USB stream (external to Macs)
is a rote way to mechanically test that idea; & not 100% sure.
Does the equipment all have a good ground to the utility or house
electrical field? An intermittent ground may affect more than sleep.
Hard to say at this point. Maybe a late-night talk radio guru on
remote viewing could peer into your situation and sleuth it out?
Sorry to have run out of ideas, but the process must be electrical
& mechanical to some extent. - Or perhaps odd software inspired.
Do you have any phone-home spyware items inside, just jumping
at the chance to spill your information? Little Snitch may help.

  • Not able to view exFAT format external hard drive in my macbook pro 10.8.2.

I have formatted my hard drive in exFAT format from a windows notebook. I am not sure what to do as I am not able to view my hard drive in my macbook.
Can somebody please help me out in this regard.?

Try connecting the exFAT drive back to the Windows notebook and use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your Taskbar.
Run a updated malware scan and/or remove any original data and reformat the drive again.
Your issue doesn't appear to be widespread, so I'm leaning towards something that got messed up somehow.
Mac's can read/write MBR/GUID and FAT32/exFAT drives, only can read NTFS, so it shouldn't be having a problem.

  • Running a VM from an exFAT drive

I use a windows 7-x64 box at work, on which i hv my linux VM running on VMware player 3. How can I use the same VM on a mac. Right now I'm running it on an NTFS external HDD which is perfect for windows. However, I need to use it on my mac (Snow Leopard) through VMware Fusion. The VM is almost 60Gig ruling out FAT32 by a long mile. I've heard a lot about exFAT. Any ideas if VMware fusion will run a VM from an exFAT drive?

Fusion by itself doesn't deal with exFAT.  It's up to the host OS (a.k.a.: OSX) to mount the exFAT partition, then Fusion will use that drive just like it would any other drive that your VM files are stored on.
Me personally, I use Tuxera NTFS to mount NTFS partitions.  You can get the free 3G-NTFS to do the same.  I was getting suspicious errors when running large monolithic VMDK files (i.e.: 60GB VMDK) which caused me to switch from 3G-NTFS to Tuxera.  But Tuxera is not free so you may want to try 3G-NTFS first.
However I will explain an alternate method for you: 2GB split VMDKs.
VMware Player, Workstation and Fusion all support VMDK files split into multiple 2GB chunks.  Normally you have to specify this when you create the virtual disk, but it can be converted later.  (Try creating a new test VM in Fusion or Player and messing with the advanced settings.)  Having the VMDK in 2GB chunk will allow you to use a FAT32 partitioned disk, which can then be used with Windows or OSX without any additional software.  Additionally, copying 2GB chunks is more reliable than a single 60GB file.  And if you ever need to recover data from a corrupt VMDK, it's easier working with 2GB files.  (Many tools have trouble opening very large files.)
The only time most people will "need" to use a VMDK (a.k.a.: not split) is if they need the virtual machine to be compatible with a VMware ESX based host.  However, you can use tools such as VMware Converter to copy virtual machines to and from ESX hosts and in the same process, convert the VMDKs to split files.  The source and destination virtual machines can be both Player so you'd use Converter just to "convert" to 2GB split VMDKs.  The biggest requirement for you is that you need enough disk space.  (Converter "copies" the data, so you end up with a clone of the original virtual machine.  Thus you need twice the space.)  After you convert and confirm the converted virtual machine works, then you can delete the original, if desired.  (This copy method is a good thing because if something goes wrong during the conversion, you simply delete the bad copy and start over.  If it didn't copy and something messed up, you'd possibly destroy your original.)
Me personally, I "need" to have my VMDKs monolithic because they're mostly running on ESX hosts.  I occasionally copy out some of the virtual machines for testing so being able to run them without going through Converter is highly desirable in my situation.  I still use Converter for various instances when I create the virtual machine in Fusion first, since ESX doesn't support growable disks, which are useful on my space limited Mac.  But if you never use ESX, then 2GB split VMDKs on a FAT32 drive makes the most sense for compatibility between a Player/Windows host and a Fusion/Mac host.

  • Lion 10.8.2 + Windows 8 + Shared exFAT data partition

    Greetings!
I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch mid-2012 model that I self upgraded to 1TB HDD and 16GB RAM. The system runs flawlessly and VMWare is also fully functional for my basic needs on Windows. However I am at the point that I NEED BOOTCAMP, and VM is not an option for some of my needs.
Here is what I want to achieve, I have read numerous forums but entries either were somewhat dated, or did not have enough details on ALL the 3 aspects I mentioned above in the subject. Here is my plan, I would like to hear suggestions from the experts on this subject matter: I would basically like to have 3 partitions, 1 for OSX (100GB), 1 for Windows 7/8 (bootcamp, 100GB), and 1 for my user folder (remaining space, about 700GB+) which I intend to share between the 2 OS's.
Here is what I already know:
    - I have to delete the recovery partition otherwise Windows will complain having more than 4 partitions on the boot drive (EFI, and the 3 others I mentioned). I am fine with loosing the reovery partition
    - I know only exFAT is the format supported "natively" for BOTH read's and write's by OSX as well as Windows 7/8.
    - I got some tutorials about somewhat convoluted and no so clean instructions on how to actually get the stuff installed, I am ready to take on the challenge and have backups etc so do not mind taking the risks
Here is what I want your advice on:
    - Does exFAT perform well enough (as compared to HFS/NTFS on the same physical spinning drive I mean). Has anyone done something like this and if any suggestions
    - Is it possible to get files corrupted while sharing the data like this between the 2 OS's
    - Is creating the data partition as NTFS and installing some native NTFS I/O handler on OSX a better option if your experience on the above 2 is somewhat negative
    - Anything else that I should be aware of?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Kaushik

Since yours is a newer machine, you have Internet Recovery, command option r held at boot up.
You need a Ethernet connection preferably, use Disk Utility to select the entire drive and erase with the middle selection and wait, it will take some time and map off any potential bad sector it discovers for a more reliable drive.
Next head to Partitions and click the box and set 3, option: GUID, adjust them to size, format the first partition OS X Extended journaled, name Macintosh HD. The second one exFAT and the last one MSDOS, name  BOOTCAMP.
Install OS X into Macintosh HD partition, quit and setup. It will likely balk at you and say no Filevault or Recovery HD partition.
Follow the method to install Windows from disk, as you know the BOOTCAMP partition needs to be changed to NTFS by the Windows installer disk before it can install Windows.
Also follow the BootCamp drivers install from Apple.
    https://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/
Use Cabon Copy Cloner to clone the OS X partition to one blank external drive and WinClone to clone the BootCamp partition to another drive.
    EFI partition
    Macintosh HD partition 100GB
    ExFAT partition 700GB
    BOOTCAMP 100GB

  • Should I format my external drive to MS-DOS (FAT) or ExFAT ??

    Hi ,
Which format would be most appropriate for reformatting my external drive whilst keeping it compatible across platforms (mac and windows)??
    Thanks.

    FAT:
Works natively with all Macs & PCs, but can't handle files larger than 4GB.
    exFAT:
Works with large files, but requires OS X 10.6.6 or later, & Vista SP1 or Windows 7 or later. Don't use your Mac to format exFAT, as Windows machines won't be able to use the drive. Must be done on a PC.

  • HT4818 I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, it wants me to delete it.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X afterwards, I can no longer dual boot.

I want to have an exFAT parition in addition to the Mac OS X and Windows partition.  If I create it before running BootCamp, BootCamp wants me to delete it before continuing.  If I create it in either Windows or Mac OS X after running BootCamp and installing both OSes, I can no longer dual boot.  What is the magic sequence to get this to work?

    I've got the same quandary.
After upgrading my hard drive to a Momentus XT Hybrid and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion, I was surprised that I couldn't format partitions separately and then restore from my clone of the old Windows 7 Partition. I found that I had to use the BootCamp Assistant to manage it all, which essentially meant getting rid of the partitions and starting again...
I now can't get my Windows / BootCamp partition to boot, after adding a 3rd, ExFat, partition, when it was working perfectly fine before. I just get a lot of dos booting failures and a final message that "No boot device is available, press Enter to continue".
See the attached message, that I get when trying to boot the bootcamp partition, through Parallels 7; which also worked perfectly fine before.
Be good to know if there is a work around this in Mountain Lion as, if not, I'm thinking I might skip Bootcamp altogether and just install a machine drive via Parallels. As suggested here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1420754
I might even keep the virtual windows machine on a separate hard drive and then I'll have no need for the ExFat partitions altogether as that was designated for  sharing between Windows  and Mac.
