Exhaust fan overworked when system idle

Any idea as to why my exhaust is freaking out when the system is idle. I turn it on and in a matter of 10 minutes after ONLY checking e-mail the fan is at 6000 rpm. The system seems to be overworking itself unnecessarily. CPU shows the following in istat:
User: 22-30%
System: 27-34%
Nice: 0%
Idle: 48-51%
CPU temp is at 68%
I have a Best Buy warranty and they say it passes all ASD tests. This fan is draining my battery 10 times faster than before. Any thoughts?

Go to your Utilities folder and start Activity Monitor....select the CPU tab and choose 'All Processes' from the drop down menu at the top of the window....I suspect you have a stuck processes....you can click the stop sign and kill it from there....

  • High heap usage even when system idle, is this caused by AMPool setting ?

    Hi All,
We are running ADF BC 10.1.3.3 with 2 JVM OC4J instance. Max heap is 3.5 GB.
I notice that when system is idle, the heap usage for each JVM can be between 1.5 to 2 GB. It is confusing me because relatively no user is accessing the application.
Then I am suspecting that the setting in Apps Module Pool may be the cause, i.e :
    <jbo.recyclethreshold>50</jbo.recyclethreshold>
    <jbo.ampool.maxavailablesize>90</jbo.ampool.maxavailablesize>
    <jbo.ampool.minavailablesize>25</jbo.ampool.minavailablesize>
Is there anything wrong with the setting that may cause AM Pool Monitor busy doing wrong thing ?
    Thank you for your help,

  • Mac Pro ATI5870--uneven fan sound when idling..any thoughts?

I recently had a noise issue with my new Mac Pro with the ATI RAdeon 5870 card. There was a lot of noise when the fans cranked up. Apple techs here in Paris took the machine and said they put it under an Apple analysis and test over night and now the noise that they heard themselves is now gone. They replaced nothing. They repaired nothing. Though I can hear the fan on the graphic card increase in spin noise when it rises above idle, which I presume is normal, it is somewhat better than when they took in the machine for repair. However, when the computer is idling and the graphic card is idling under no load I can now hear more of an uneven fan noise, which is disturbing. It's as if you can hear the fan changing its tone or tonality, moving up and down in tone as it idles.
It's not all of the time, but most of the time when there is no load on the card. Like an uneven humming under lowest fan speed.
Doe anyone else hear this symptom? Is it normal as the fan or bearings are running at their slowest? Everything else so far works ok graphically with the card. (I had a MBP 17 that made noise when idling once and they replaced the two fans in the back and the noise was gone.) I realize this is a high performance graphic card and I do work in a quiet space, but if replacing the card would net me a more even sounding working environment I would risk it. If not, then c'est la vie.
    Thanks for any advice.

Someone else suggested that they heard a similar noise on their Mac Pro but for them it was emanating from the Intake and/or Exhaust fans running on their idle speed of around 599rpm.

  • Macbook May 2010 edition exhaust fan runs at full speed

Bought a new Macbook around February 2011. Yesterday all of a sudden while watching Netflix, the exhaust fan started running at full speed (Approximately 6200 RPM). I thought the machine was overheating. So I immediately shut it down and let it cool. But I noticed the machine was barely warm.
When I started it up again, it started making the same noise with the exhaust fan running at full speed. I installed SMCFanControl and I see that the CPU is barely warm - 35-37C and yet the fan is running at full speed. I looked at the CPU/HDD usage and there is barely ANY usage (~90% idle). Nothing out of the ordinary. So it definitely doesn't seem to be a heating issue.
In order to troubleshoot this I have done the following:
    1. Installed latest upgrade - Snow Leopard 10.6.7
    2. Reset SMC
    3. Reset the PRAM
    4. Tried booting from the install DVD. There as well it exhibits the same issue.
Neither of these steps have helped me with my situation. I would really hate to go to the apple store as its always crowded and would end up wasting time. Are there any other steps I could try?
Update: I tried running the Apple Hardware Test from the DVD. This is the error code that I got: 4SNS/1/40000001: TN1D- -1.000
Can someone please tell me what this means?

I don't know what that code means for sure, but it sounds like one of the temperature sensors may have died, so the fans just run at full to cool.
I would take it to the apple store.

Or were you thinking of philosphical problems like "what does a method do when it's not called?"?Actually I was trying to see if I could get the OP to say boo to a goose.

  • Capture system print event and system idle time

    Hello,
We are creating a desktop widget using AIR. The widget will be docked to the system tray. What we want to achieve is:
    1. When the user invokes Print function at the OS level, from any location/appolication, the AIR widget shall listen to it and show an alert.
    2. The widget should be able to detect a predefined system idle time (wherein the user is not interacting with the system as a whole - neither mouse nor keyboard inputs - for a predefined interval), and perform an action based on that.
How shall it be possible to detect the above 2 scenarios in AIR?
Any help in this regards, will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Warm Regards,

  • Mouse loses Bluetooth connection when left idle

I am suddenly having an issue where the bluetooth mouse which works off the preinstalled Toshiba bluetooth stack,
loses its connection when left idle for a little while.
    This was not happening before.
    What could cause this?
I just changed the batteries in the mouse so that is not the issue.
    Any ideas?

That doesn't matter. If you can get a newer version for your band then use it.
If not, install the Toshiba one and see if it works. Afterwards install your old one again,
but ensure during the uninstallation that you do not remove the old Bluetooth setup configurations (The uninstaller asks for it).
In this case the newer driver remain on your system. Maybe it solves your problem.

  • Exhaust Fan not turning on.

Could someone please tell me how to turn on my exhaust fan?? My MB is running at about constant 55℃, which is normal, but I ran the yes>/dev/null and it was up over 110℃ with CPU idle% usage of 47% and still no fan turned on. It used to come on all the time while I was watching videos etc and now - nothing. I've recently had the logic board replaced - coincidence?
smcFanControl is installed - no effect.
FanControl 2.1 is installed - no effect.
iStat is installed for monitoring - exhaust fan reads 0rpm.
    Help!!
    Thanks.

I would take it in to Apple.

  • Exhaust fan

hi, just have a question: as soon as i open my macbook pro the exhaust fan turns on. its not loud or anything in fact the only way to hear it is to put your ear to the macbook but i just wanted to know if its normal.i have istats widget thats showing me that all temps are normal and exhaust fan running about 2000 rpm. i checked activity monitor and nothing unusual there and i also did ram and power management resets. again i just want to make sure that its normal for the fan always be on.
    thanks

I recommend using the iStat Pro dashboard widget to monitor the exhaust fan speeds. The two in my i5 MBP are only audible when they reach ~4000rpm which usually happens when both physical cores are at >90%. With one core at 100% they both stay at ~3400rpm and the cpu at 71C.

  • Macbook pro's exhaust fan

My macbook pro's exhaust fan has never came on since I have owned the computer, then suddenly is came on at full speed during boot up and now its off again?

Are there any fans other than the exaust fan cause I have "fan control" and it normally reads a temp around 120 F and a left and right fan speed of 2000 rpm but when it went haywire it said the temp was 32 F and -1 rpms.  I do hear the fans running normally, like now, hhbut they are very small sounding.  The fan I heard when there was a problem sounded completely different, it was moving a huge volume of air.

  • How to ascertain the fans operate when needed?

I have a MBP 2 GHz, 2 GB Ram. When I run the Apple Hardware test, both the shorter and the extended versions, no troubles are found; I can hear both fans kick in one after the other during the logic board testing part. However, I have never heard them kick in during MBP daily use. According to CoreDuo Temp, the CPU temps goes as high as 78-84 Celsius during more intense operations. Yet, the fans do not kick in.
As posted on the subject, how do I ascertain that the fans will kick in when they need to? How can I check that out?
    Thank you!
    SVT

Someone should really make a program that can let us control the fans, I've noticed my MBP from the outside gets no warmer when playing counter strike source on an overclocked videocard compared to when its idle just because the fans are on. I bet if the fans are on when idle or doing light tasks the MBP would run MUCH cooler.

  • Not Updating Customized Table when System having Performance Issue

    Hi,
This is actually the same topic as "Not Updating Customized Table when System having Performance Issue" which is posted last December by Leonard Tan regarding the user exit EXIT_SAPLMBMB_001.
Recently we changed the program function module z_mm_save_hide_qty to update task. However this causes more data not updated. Hence we put back the old version (without the update task).  But now it is not working as it used to be (e.g. version 1 - 10 records not updated, version 2 with update task - 20 records not updated, back to version 1 - 20 records not updated).
I tried debugging the program, however whenever I debugged, there is nothing wrong and the data is updated correctly.
Please advise if anyone has any idea why is this happening. Many thanks.
    Regards,
    Janet

    Hi Janet,
you are right. This is a basic rule not to do any COMMIT or RFC calls in a user exit.
Have a look at SAP note 92550. Here they say that exit EXIT_SAPLMBMB_001 is called in the update routine MB_POST_DOCUMENT. And this routine is already called in UPDATE TASK from  FUNCTION 'MB_UPDATE_TASKS' IN UPDATE TASK.
SAP also tells us not to do any updates on SAP system tables like MBEW, MARD, MSEG.
Before the exit is called, now they call 'MB_DOCUMENT_BADI' with methods MB_DOCUMENT_BEFORE_UPDATE and MB_DOCUMENT_UPDATE. Possibly you have more success implementing the BADI.
I don't know your situation and goal so this is all I can tell you now.
    Good luck!

    Clemens
