Exhausted trying to install iTunes 5

I just purchased an iPod mini. Already had iTunes 4 installed on my laptop running WinXP SP2. Asked to update to iTunes 5. Vanishing Lady starts. I've read similar related posts for hours trying all suggested remedies. None of them working. I am so frustrated. System restore will not restore to any previous date. I received one error message early in this ordeal. Message states" Error connecting to service manager. Error number=0. But after trying several of the suggested fixes that error has never appeared again. I have Zonealarm firewall(disabled)installed and Norton antivirus also disabled from the very begining. I do not have the driver css-dvp.sys, but do have correct mapi32.dll in system 32 directory. I know several of you are as exhausted as I am helping others but I asked anyone if they might have any other unmentioned suggestions. Thanks

gaah. okay, checking to see where you are in the process. are you currently trying to roll back to 4.x? if so, the following thread might be helpful:

  • Trying to install iTunes, going to wrong drive and won't insall

    Trying to install iTunes on my work laptop at home. I want it installed on my hard drive. I had loaded it a couple of weeks ago, and put all the tunes and folders on a network drive at work, called the j drive. Now, it seems to default to the j drive - when I try to install now, it errors out as invalid drive j:/ or whatever. I removed iTunes and deleted all the folders off Windows, didn't help.
    How can I get it loading to the c drive instead of j? It doesn't give you a destination option when running it!

    Well, finally stumbled on the answer, or at least I think the answer, in the installation problems tab on this site. I had to download tweakUI from Powertoys and relocate the default my music folder to the c drive from the j drive. When I reinstalled iTunes, I am able to unplug my computer from the network and still have iTunes come up and work. Which I couldn't do before.
    It's also a fix for the error coming up at can't find my music folder.

    I just tried running the Lenovo Hard Drive Quick Test both in normal mode and in safe mode.  Both times it indicated a failed read test on the HDD. The last two tests also failed.  I forget what those tests were called.
    I am really beginning to think I have a bad HDD and the problem just happens to be in the reserved partition where my factory system software resides.

    Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

    We have had itunes on this pc for 2 years and recently it wouldn't open and another error message kept popping up saying it couldn't open because MSVCR80.dll was missing.     I already:
    - Uninstalled all old Itunes versions.
    - Tried a clean reboot to install the new version,
    - Installed the security update’ Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package ATL Security Update’
    But I still get the same error.

    For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
    The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
    Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
    If you still have trouble you might consider installing the alternate version iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards) where you can download a 64-bit installer for the 32-bit version of iTunes that works with older video cards. This version may also be useful for anyone who is unable to get the 64-bit version of Apple Application Support to install when using the itunes6464setup file, or has trouble with playback of certain video files despite having QuickTime installed.

    I tried to install Itunes ver 11.1.4 on my Windows7 64 bit system and got this message: “Service ‘Apple Mobile Device’(Apple Mobile Device) failed to start.  Verify that you have sufficient privilliages to start system services.”
    I have administrator privillages so I dont understand what the problem is.  I have loaded previous versions of Itunes before.  Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Error Message when trying to install iTunes

    I'm trying to install itunes to my laptop.  It downloaded tp my computer fine, but as it tries to install i receive and errror window that says, "Application support is currently suspended.  you must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?"  if i click "yes" it pops up again immediately.  if I press "no" the installation tries to continue and the same message pops up 3 more times.  if i press "no" to clear it i finally get the message, "iTunes Installer Interupted.  Errors occured during installation before the requested operations for the iTunes could be completed.  Your system has not been modified.  To complete the installation, run the installer again. Click Fiinish to exit the installer."   If i hit finish and try again, I go through all the same errors each time. 
    I have windows 8.
    Any ideas?

    Good-O ... with that one, let's try the fixit from the following Microsoft document:

    Does that get your Windows Updates flowing again? If so, stock up on the ones you're behind on (there may be quite a lot of them) and then try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
