EXIF data lost from many photos

I was looking through some old pictures taken with a Canon EOS 5D which I sold some time ago.
There were around 3800 pictures.
I discovered that 480 had no entry in their EXIF data fields for BODY SERIAL NUMBER and LENS. Other fields seem intact.
All the other photos had all their data fields present and correct.
Admittedly these pictures have been copied/moved from one PC to another more than once over time, but there again, so have all the thousands of others which have not lost their data.
I did find duplicates of a handful of the errant pictures and the EXIF data fields for these were complete.
Perhaps something has been lost in the copying/moving of these pictures.
The copying/moving has been done with both Adobe Bridge and Windows.
Has anyone experienced this phenomenon?
How might I ensure that it does not happen again in the future?
Or is there some reason other than copying/moving by which the data could have been stripped and why only two fields of EXIF data and not all of it?

I've been having the same trouble for a few months now. All EXIF is lost, including GPS and focal info. It only occurs when you edit a RAW/DNG file and have the "save edits as 16-bit tiffs" selected in the preferences. Please, Apple, help! This is a significant issue when exporting photos! That info is essential.
thanks,
Brett

  • From Bridge To PS To Export - EXIF Data Lost

    Hi all,
    I'm wondering what happens to my EXIF data when I import a Canon RAW file via ACR from Bridge to PS. When I export the file as a JPG and then right-click the jpg properties, none of the camera data is recorded. Perhaps there is a tick-box I've just not ticked?
    Also, if I add keywords in Bridge, should they carry through the export process? I'm interested to know if it's possible to auto complete the keyword field in flickr when uploading an image.
    CS5 with W7 and Canon 5Dii RAW.
    Thanks in advance.

    Can you be a little more explicit about the exact steps you're taking?
    I just opened an image from Bridge into Photoshop by right-clicking a CR2 file, choosing Open In Camera Raw, then hitting the [Open] button in the Camera Raw dialog.  Then I did File - Save As - JPEG, and all the camera metadata was retained (per Explorer's Properties, Details tab).
    When you say "export", exactly how are you saving the file?  With File - Save For Web & Devices, there's a Metadata field that allows you to specify how little or how much to keep.

  • EXIF Data Lost for Edited DNG Files

    I'm having an issue where my photo's EXIF data is lost when I export the picture from iPhoto. This only happens after I edit a RAW (DNG) file and export it. If I export the RAW file before editing the EXIF data is fine. Is this a bug?
    System Info:
    iPhoto v.7.1.3
    RAW format type is Adobe DNG.
    Camera is Pentax K10D
    Mac OS X v.10.5.2.

It only occurs when you edit a RAW/DNG file and have the "save edits as 16-bit tiffs" selected in the preferences. Please, Apple, help! This is a significant issue when exporting photos! • EXIF data lost when edited and exported to Picasa web

    I use iPhoto 6. If a geotagged photo is scaled and exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data are preserved and recognized by Picasa web. But if the same photo is edited (crop, contrast...) and then exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data don't appear. I've tried the export operation manually and through the plugin, but it always happens the same. How to avoid this? Does it happen too with iPhoto 8? Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes and no. With iPhoto 8 you can export with an option to include the keywords, titles and comments. But I don't know if geotags are included. Ask in the iPhoto 8 forum as I know geotags have been discussed there. Do a search in that forum for "geotags" or similar.
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Missing EXIF data when using other photo apps besides "Camera"

    I have recently been trying to use the EXIF location and camera info information created with images in the iphone 3GS and noticed that the only image files that have the full EXIF data attached when imported to my computer are the images created using the iPhone native Camera app. I have numerous photo apps that take great photos which when downloaded are missing almost all the EXIF data.
    What is up? Is apple requiring third part apps to strip the data or somehow blocking them from capturing the EXIF location data for download?
    I know many of these apps are using the location data to geotag the images and link to maps.
    Thanks for any info!

    Thanks, I posted it there! Actually I have been searching for some site to officially post a bug report to Adobe, but didn't manage to find it myself...

  • How to copy EXIF data for a single photo?

    Hello,
    I post photographs to a few different photo forums for community comment and critique. Including the basic technical data for each photograph is common and having to type it in manually is tedious. Is there a quick and easy way to copy or extract basic EXIF data (exposure, focal length, EV, ISO, exposure program, metering, make, model, lens) for a single photo to the clipboard? The information is all over LR I just can't determine how to get it out quickly.
    Thanks for your help!
    Best,
    Eric

    I don't see anyone provided you with an answer.
    The hard way is to export the metadata to the file and use an external program. There are many programs that manipulate metadata. I haven't wanted to export it in the way you describe.
    What operating system are you on?

  • Why the cached data lost from Coherence?

    Yesterday,I sarted a storage-enabledcache server by running cache-server.cmd and started a storage-disabled cache console by running coherence.cmd.
    Then I inputed the following commands to input some data into the Coherence caches:
    cache(cb)
    put a a
    put b b
    put c c
    put d d
    put e e
    Map (cb): list
    c = c
    e = e
    a = a
    d = d
    b = bBut today, when I issue the list command from the Coherence command line, the output become "null".
    Why the data lost?

    By running cache-server.cmd Coherence will be using the configuration file from the coherence.jar which will default to a cache with expiry of one hour. So if you had checked you cache after an hour or so you would have seen it was empty.
    If you look at the coherence-cache-config.xml file inside the coherence jar you will see this mapping (which will apply to the cache you created with the name "cb"
        <cache-mapping>
          <cache-name>*</cache-name>
          <scheme-name>example-distributed</scheme-name>

            </local-scheme>
          </backing-map-scheme>
          <autostart>true</autostart>
        </distributed-scheme>which uses the example-binary-backing-map scheme
        <local-scheme>
          <scheme-name>example-binary-backing-map</scheme-name>
          <eviction-policy>HYBRID</eviction-policy>
          <high-units>{back-size-limit 0}</high-units>
          <unit-calculator>BINARY</unit-calculator>
          <expiry-delay>{back-expiry 1h}</expiry-delay>
          <flush-delay>1m</flush-delay>
          <cachestore-scheme></cachestore-scheme>
        </local-scheme>which you can see has expiry set to 1 hour.

    This morning I backed up everything in iTunes on my iPhone 4s, which I just had replaced due to a cracked display.
    When I restored my replacement iPhone from the latest back up, to my horror, all Viber history and messages had
    vanished and only the blank application appeared. I was using Viber 4.2.1
    If anyone knows a way around this, it would be very much appreciated, as there was a lot of important information contained :-((

  • Updated to itunes 11 and all data lost from ipod and library

    I updated to itunes 11 yesterday and then downloaded some cd's I'd bought on HMV Digital. lugged ipod in and all music appeared in library as normal. i transferred new music onto ipod and created some playlists. When i turned my ipod on this morning to go to work, there are no songs on it at all, not even the ones i downloaded and transferred last night!!!!
    Having logged into itunes again tonight, the only music in my library is that which i downloaded last night... I am livid, there were thousands of songs on there and I don't have access to that music anymore... Is there any way I can retreive the info? All music isn't backed up on this laptop as ipod was previously synced with different PC

    Just FYI - the situation is resolved.  I downloaded the new snow leopard 10.6.8 update for safari and now itunes works.  I have no idea what that has to do with anything - but I saw it on another forum and it actually worked.

  • How to get Final Cut to honor EXIF data of photos? (Specifically: rotation)

    I've got a ton of photos I need to drop into FCE. The camera automatically rotates the photos via EXIF data. When I insert them into FCE, it makes my portrait photos show up as landscape. Adobe Bridge, Photoshop, iPhoto... all honor the EXIF data and display the photos properly.
    I've got a ~15 minute piece to put together, mostly photos of about 4 seconds in duration. Rotating them manually is extremely tedious.
    Is there any way to get FCE to honor EXIF data?
    On a side note, in FCE, is there any easy way to do ken burns effects? The motion editor is tedious compared to other apps.
    Thanks

    So even Final Cut Pro isn't able to do this yet?
    I just discovered that iMovie supports it if you import from iPhoto. I might just do these sections in iMovie, then export it, drop it into FCE... not using the XML feature, as I found it really doesn't work as advertised.
    The Past Attributes function may work, thanks. I saw that in other threads too. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some way to get the EXIF data to be read.
    Thanks Tom, you're always very helpful.

  • Photo EXIF Data Stripped When Sync'd BACK to iPhone via iTunes

    I'm not sure whether this belongs here or in the iPhone forum, but since it looks like an iTunes problem, I thought you all might have an idea. Here's the problem:
    1. Take Picture with iPhone (3GS, if it matters) in portrait orientation.
    2. Import Picture into Photoshop Elements 7.
    3. EXIF Data survives (including correct orientation).
    4. Put Picture in "iPhone Pictures" Album in Photoshop Elements 7.
    5. EXIF Data survives (including correct orientation).
    6. Delete Picture from Camera Roll on iPhone.
    7. Sync "iPhone Pictures" Album (which includes Picture) to iPhone using iTunes 8.2.0.23.
    8. EXIF Data lost (including incorrect orientation).
    9. Picture appears on iPhone with incorrect orientation and all other EXIF Data appears to have been lost.
    This appears, then, to be a problem with the way iTunes is treating the Picture when it syncs it back to the iPhone as a part of the "iPhone Pictures" Album, but I'm not certain.
    My particular concern is with the loss of the orientation flag (which results in all portrait images rotated 90* CCW).
    Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Great bug report! Sorry, I don't have any ideas on how you might workaround it. I can only suggest that you submit it to Apple as a "real" bug report.

  • Does the ipad preserve full resolution and exif data on imported photos?

    If I import photos to my IPad2 using the 'camera connection kit',
    a) How do I transfer those photos to my windows computer ?
    b) Does the IPad2 preserve the full resolution and EXIF data etc of the photo ?
    Thanks in advance for your answers !

    There is help in this article (but basically your computer should see the iPad as a camera and should appear in windows explorer if there are non-synced photos i.e. taken with the iPad, transferred via CCK, or saved from emails/websites etc) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
    And, yes, the full photo and it's info is stored/copied i.e. they are the same as on the memory card.

  • Maintaining EXIF data when transferring pictures from XP to iPhoto?

    Good afternoon everyone! Hope I can get some help here...
    is there any way to maintain the EXIF data added from a computer using Windows XP. This is when you right click on a photo and go to properties->summary tab (i.e. keywords and comments) while importing into iPhoto? A client of mine spent hours upon hours adding comments like location, description, etc. to each photo and it would essentially be a nightmare re-doing all of that.
    Even an add-on or separate program would be fine. In the event that iPhoto does not work nicely with this, any recommendations for future use on the Apple platform would be appreciated. Thanks fellas!

    You are confusing EXIF - the data about the photo from your camera - with ITPC data - iPhoto pays attention to both IF they are present in the proper fields - the key to transferring EXIF and ITPC data from one computer to a Mac using iPhoto is to have the data properly embedded in the photo of the source computer - if it is then iPhoto will use it on import
    see http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/glossary/f/metadata.htm for more information on EXIF, TITPD and XMP
    Also download EXIF viewer for the Mac - http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/index.html - to view the EXIF data before iPhoto gets it
