Exif data lost?

whenever i work with RAW files in Aperture, i always loose the exif data. Even the camera make does not show up when i post to flickr. I have all updates for aperture.
My cameras are Rebel XT and Leica DLux3

what does the preset that you are using to export the images say about exif data ???
there is a checkbox that includes or strips the metadata for presets ...
check that first ...

  • EXIF Data Lost for Edited DNG Files

I'm having an issue where my photo's EXIF data is lost when I export the picture from iPhoto. This only happens after I edit a RAW (DNG) file and export it. If I export the RAW file before editing the EXIF data is fine. Is this a bug?
    System Info:
    iPhoto v.7.1.3
RAW format type is Adobe DNG.
    Camera is Pentax K10D
    Mac OS X v.10.5.2.

I've been having the same trouble for a few months now. All EXIF is lost, including GPS and focal info. It only occurs when you edit a RAW/DNG file and have the "save edits as 16-bit tiffs" selected in the preferences. Please, Apple, help! This is a significant issue when exporting photos! That info is essential.

  • EXIF data lost from many photos

I was looking through some old pictures taken with a Canon EOS 5D which I sold some time ago.
    There were around 3800 pictures.
I discovered that 480 had no entry in their EXIF data fields for BODY SERIAL NUMBER and LENS. Other fields seem intact.
All the other photos had all their data fields present and correct.
Admittedly these pictures have been copied/moved from one PC to another more than once over time, but there again, so have all the thousands of others which have not lost their data.
I did find duplicates of a handful of the errant pictures and the EXIF data fields for these were complete.
Perhaps something has been lost in the copying/moving of these pictures.
The copying/moving has been done with both Adobe Bridge and Windows.
    Has anyone experienced this phenomenon?
How might I ensure that it does not happen again in the future?
Or is there some reason other than copying/moving by which the data could have been stripped and why only two fields of EXIF data and not all of it?

  • From Bridge To PS To Export - EXIF Data Lost

    Hi all,
I'm wondering what happens to my EXIF data when I import a Canon RAW file via ACR from Bridge to PS. When I export the file as a JPG and then right-click the jpg properties, none of the camera data is recorded. Perhaps there is a tick-box I've just not ticked?
Also, if I add keywords in Bridge, should they carry through the export process? I'm interested to know if it's possible to auto complete the keyword field in flickr when uploading an image.
    CS5 with W7 and Canon 5Dii RAW.
    Thanks in advance.

Can you be a little more explicit about the exact steps you're taking?
I just opened an image from Bridge into Photoshop by right-clicking a CR2 file, choosing Open In Camera Raw, then hitting the [Open] button in the Camera Raw dialog.  Then I did File - Save As - JPEG, and all the camera metadata was retained (per Explorer's Properties, Details tab).
When you say "export", exactly how are you saving the file?  With File - Save For Web & Devices, there's a Metadata field that allows you to specify how little or how much to keep.

  • EXIF data lost when edited and exported to Picasa web

I use iPhoto 6. If a geotagged photo is scaled and exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data are preserved and recognized by Picasa web. But if the same photo is edited (crop, contrast...) and then exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data don't appear. I've tried the export operation manually and through the plugin, but it always happens the same. How to avoid this? Does it happen too with iPhoto 8? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes and no. With iPhoto 8 you can export with an option to include the keywords, titles and comments. But I don't know if geotags are included. Ask in the iPhoto 8 forum as I know geotags have been discussed there. Do a search in that forum for "geotags" or similar.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Photo EXIF Data Stripped When Sync'd BACK to iPhone via iTunes

I'm not sure whether this belongs here or in the iPhone forum, but since it looks like an iTunes problem, I thought you all might have an idea. Here's the problem:
    1. Take Picture with iPhone (3GS, if it matters) in portrait orientation.
    2. Import Picture into Photoshop Elements 7.
    3. EXIF Data survives (including correct orientation).
    4. Put Picture in "iPhone Pictures" Album in Photoshop Elements 7.
    5. EXIF Data survives (including correct orientation).
    6. Delete Picture from Camera Roll on iPhone.
    7. Sync "iPhone Pictures" Album (which includes Picture) to iPhone using iTunes 8.2.0.23.
    8. EXIF Data lost (including incorrect orientation).
    9. Picture appears on iPhone with incorrect orientation and all other EXIF Data appears to have been lost.
This appears, then, to be a problem with the way iTunes is treating the Picture when it syncs it back to the iPhone as a part of the "iPhone Pictures" Album, but I'm not certain.
My particular concern is with the loss of the orientation flag (which results in all portrait images rotated 90* CCW).
Any help or suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks.

Great bug report! Sorry, I don't have any ideas on how you might workaround it. I can only suggest that you submit it to Apple as a "real" bug report.

  • When exporting a photo to photo library, all EXIF data is lost. What rational is behind this?

When exporting a photo to photo library, all EXIF data is lost.
    What rational is behind this?

Thanks for your reply on this!
One issue seems to be with Foto Library app itself. When running an auto-correct there it looks like EXIF will be stripped more or less completely.
Second issue is in iPhoto app on iOS when working on RAW. When exporting to the roll the EXIF is modified in a way. It was keeping most of the EXIF in case of Canon 5D MKII that I tested today, but the EXIF data is definately changed, e.g. lens type is different because maybe some fields are ignored there. Also the images are silently scaled down by 50% which is kind of annoying.
The initial problem was observed with a Pentax K7 and I will need to reproduce the issue in this config I assume. Maybe tomorrow I can do this.

  • PSE 10 editor changing date taken in EXIF data

Hello. I have just joined the forum after recently buying PSE 10 Editor for Mac. I had no trouble at first but now after I have saved an edit I  find that the date taken has been changed to the same as the date modified & imported.
I can change it back manually through iPhotos menu but this is a bit of a nuisance when a lot of photos are involved, I don't know why it has happened but how do I reset it to give the correct date ?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it didn't help.  I lost another photo today and had to retrieve it
for the Organizer from my Windows files.  Instead of placing it next to the original photo (or in the same area), it placed it in a file called Adobe/Photoshop.com.  I made sure again that the line you referred to isn't checked.  In addition, when the photo doesn't get lost, the Exif date for the photo does get lost and the photo is dated today.  These two problems seem to be connected, although I can never predict which one will occur.  Anybody have more ideas?  Could it be a Windows 7 issue rather than a Photoshop issue?

  • Editing with the iOS 8 Photos app strips EXIF data from photos.

The new iOS 8 Photos app has some nice editing features and extensions from other apps is a good idea, however any editing done strips out all of the EXIF data from the photo.

I have the same problem. It's awful; if you edit and upload georeferencing and other stuff is lost. Fail.
It didn't strip it when I edited in Snapseed and then saved back to the photo library.

  • EXIF data corrupt

When I modify a picture with Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 it very often (but interestingly not always) happens, that afterwards the EXIF data are mostly lost. In Picasa I than only find a remaining block of about 5 values. Photo Me tells me, that "The EXIF data header of the chosen File is invalid", my smart TV is not able to view the picture any more. Even Microsoft Phot Gallery refuses to open the file.
When I open the corrupt file with CEWE foto viewer and restore it afterwards, the values are back again. But unfortunately the size of the file gets trasticly reduced.
Since this is not a general problem, I don't know where to look for a solution. Obviously it's not the program settings, since I haven't changed anything there.
My camera is a Pentax K5, But I don't think that there is a problem, because the original pictures are always ok.
    Who knows more?

I may be wrong but it appears that all Adobe products strip out the camera maker notes data from EXIF Metadata.
Since EXIFtool and several other applications can properly read and write to and from the EXIF maker note area, I can only assume Adobe does not care about preserving this information.  I've been researching this topic for the past few days and it appears Adobe has known about the issue for several years but has never fixed it.  Since they have not fixed it, I can only assume they don't feel it is important enough to us users.  Some folks keep their original files and do not let any applications ever edit them in any way, including metadata.   That wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have 10's of thousands of images to deal with.  Originals, edited ones, backups, etc....   It starts to chew up space pretty fast but keeping your originals protected from ANY updates is the only way to ensure the maker notes stay in tact.  Of course this makes it really inconvenient to quickly look at the maker note of a particular photo.  This camera specific information can be used to help the photographer learn how he/she can reproduce a certain photo characteristic that they may really like.  Once again EXIFtool and several other software vendors have figured out how to read/write to the metadata without destroying it.

  • Some photos misses some EXIF data

    Hello,
I'm wondering why some of the photos on my iPhone are missing some EXIF information like the date when the photo was taken or the GPS data.
All the photos were taken with the default camera app and were copied to the Mac via iPhoto and Imagecapture. So what happened? Are the EXIF data really LOST?

  • EXIF data & tags

As  I understand it & please correct me if I'm wrong' the EXIF that the camera captures has all of the details about when the picture was taken.  Including time picture taken, camera settings & model number, if flash fired or not etc, etc.  Some cameras have much more data than others & this can include GPS location & perhaps even more that I'm unaware of.
When I use PSE & add tags I have the option of having the EXIF data on each individual photo file overwritten or added to what it had originally.  Is this correct?
Can I add to this data anything else?  What if any other programs read this data, Windows perhaps? And & if so how is this done? Can any other programs make use of this data?  For instance if I were to export a reduced size copy of one of my picture & emailed it to someone are they likely to be able to see this data?
    Thanks in advance

You are right about the data which is automatically saved from the camera settings.
Now, about how to add your own additional data to the files themselves:
1 - The main command to copy the data you have already added to your catalog is in the file menu, 'write metadata to files'. This adds important data such as tags, categories, star rating, captions, notes. This does not delete or replace already existing data. Your explorer/finder can find and show most of those added data, and many other softwares (photo or video editing for instance) can see them.
2 - Not everything you add in your catalog can be written like this : stacks, version sets, albums are not properties of a single file, they are ways for the catalog to group different pictures. If you 'write metadata to files' as explained above, and import the same files in a new catalog, that kind of information will be lost. This is the reason why it is better to use the integrated backup/restore function rather than re-importing in a new catalog.
3 - Some kinds of data like adding captions or changing the 'date taken' are automatically written to the files without the need to 'write metadata to files'.
4 - IPTC data : they are standard information used by professional photographers. In the right panel of the PSE11 organizer, if you choose the data tab instead of the keyword tag, you are shown every kind of information for your picture. There is an IPTC section. If you click on the ... (3 dots) next to 'IPTC', you open a dialog where you can document everything.
    That's the general idea

  • EXIF data for PNG files

I seem to have lost all EXIF data for pictures that I first converted to PNG format, and then edited in iPhoto.
The EXIF data is still there in the copies of the files in the "Originals" folder in the iPhoto Library. If I open these files with Graphic Converter, I can see the EXIF data.
But the EXIF data seems to be missing from the PNG files in the "Modified" folder.
Is this some sort of quirk with PNG files in iPhoto?

I just googled this and the issue appears to be that png does not support EXIF data, or if it does, only in a very limited way. I'm no expert in this field but have a read of this:

  • TIFF to JPEG: why is GPS data lost?

    I'm in OS10.5.7 (a quite recent upgrade from 10.5.5) and PS CS3
I go to some lengths to sync GPS data (tracks from a Garmin 60csx) to Nikon original/RAW NEFs before post-production. That data is maintained when saving the image as a PSD file after retouching, as well as when flattening the PSD to a TIFF for final archiving.  But when the TIFF is resaved as a JPEG (often for web use or transmission), the GPS data is stripped out of the metadata and lost.  So to verify the location for someone, I have to go back to the archived TIFF with the same name.
Kind of a pain.  Is this operator-error?  Any way to avoid it?
    Thanks in advance.

I think there was another thread about this.
Only I thought in that one the GPS data was lost when saved as a tiff.
have you tried saving the Jpeg from the PSD?
Are you using SFW to make the jpeg? if so SFW strips all exif data.
    Re: PS CS4
During a SFW you have some options as to what metadata to save with the .jpg.  One of the options is 'All' which does save the EXIF GPS data with the file.
During a 'Save As' to a .jpg (first converted to 8bits/channel) all of the EXIF data is saved.
