Existing ATT customer - upgrade to iPhone without data?

I'm not sure what's stopping me from doing this, so I'd like to bounce it off of you guys. My friend is upgrading to a 3G and will sell me his 2.5G iPhone very cheap. I'm on a family plan for ATT and currently have a Razr.
I've popped my SIM card into his 2.5G phone and it works fine -- I can place and receive calls. Naturally, what worries me is the EDGE connection, as I don't have any kind of data plan.
If I continue to use the iPhone, I assume I'll get hit hard with charges for things like email/stocks/weather which will continuously use the EDGE network even when I don't want to. If there's someway to disable that, and just use wifi (I have it everywhere) that would be optimal. I don't mind losing visual voicemail or anything, it's just an opportunity that's tough to pass up since he'd be selling me such a nice upgrade for so cheap.
I've looked online and found an add-on called Services.app which will disable EDGE, but I'm not sure if this is effective or necessary. Can anyone shed some light on this situation?

I think I get the jist. My mom (who purchased the phone as a gift) said she was told that the extension will go on for my number however at the end of her original two-year agreement she will be able to take advantage of upgrading her phone while my upgrade is technically being triggered now (AND A **** OF AN UPGRADE AT THAT, if I do say so myself ;))
Merry Christmas everyone and thanks for the past and future help

  • IPhone without data subscription possible?

I have an iPod Touch and would like to upgrade to iPhone 4. First of all to get camera and GPS. I don't use my cell phone a lot, and maybe I would move my number to the iPhone if I can find a plan with micro-SIM for calls only. For my use, data plans are way to expensive. I use the Touch on WiFi and that covers almost all my needs, hence the idea to forgo any data plan.
I know I would spend a lot for a "Touch with benefits", but I had a small lottery win and that would pay for the unlocked iPhone. On the other hand, to pay for data that I don't really need would cost even more over the term of the fixed contract.
But to make sure that I get what I expect, I have the following question:
If I buy an unlocked iPhone 4 and use it basically as a very expensive Touch with camera and GPS, are there any consequences? In other words, is there any feature that does not work or does not work 100% if there is no micro-SIM installed? Or if the cell phone subscription only allows for calls, not data?
I hope someone can help me.

As long as you buy the unlocked version from Apple...
You need a microSIM installed (or a cut down normal SIM) to activate it in iTunes, you can borrow one or get a free/cheap pay as you go one. You can then choose whether to leave it in or not.
As long as you are on WIFI, everything will work fine apart from Phone and SMS.
If you disconnect from wifi, Maps and GPS (and other online services) won't work as they only get your coordinates and upload them for parsing to google et al.

itunes don't save the music Rating into the ID3 Tag, so if I import my existing media library into iTunes I will lost informations about favorit songs
I have also installed many programs with settings, login information and other data on my iPhone. How I can keep this information?
    How I can keep my:
    -music ratings
    -installed programs
    -program data
    Can anyone help me?

Where is your computer's backup of all important data that should include your iTunes library and should have been created or updated immediately before installing a new OS? Did you lose all important data when doing do or just your iTunes content? The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.

  • Sync custom ringtone onto iPhone - without syncing to iTunes

I do not sync my iPhone 5 to my iTunes on my MBA. Whenever I plug in my iPhone into iTunes, it asks if I want to set up a new iPhone or restore from a nonexistent backup. So I cannot get the ringtone I made in GarageBand onto my iPhone by syncing my iPhone with my iTunes. All software on both devices is fully up to date. With all that in mind, how am I supposed to get my ringtone onto my iPhone?

You can't get the ringtones on your phone without syncing to iTunes.
Is this the first time you've synced with iTunes?

  • Message sent as iMessage instead of text for iPhone without data

My iPhone does not have data. When I am in a wifi zone iMessage works and texts are received. When I am not in wifi, anyone who sends me a text from an iPhone using iMessage does not come through. Is there a setting where iMessages get automatically changed to text messages when receiving messages

    Hey there lg2222,
It sounds like you are not getting iMessages from other people when not connected to Wi-Fi. I would first do these steps, if you have not already:
The first step to resolving an issue with iMessage is to update your iOS software and your carrier settings to the latest versions. If iMessage still has an issue, follow the steps below for your issue.
Then use these troubleshooting steps to help isolate and resolve the issue:
To resolve issues with sending and receiving iMessages, follow these steps
Check iMessage system status for current service issues.
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and make sure that you registered iMessage with your phone number or Apple ID and that you selected iMessage for use. If the phone number or Apple ID isn't available for use, troubleshoot iMessage registration.
Open Safari and navigate to www.apple.com to verify data connectivity. If a data connection isn't available, troubleshoot cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection.
iMessage over cellular data might not be available while you're on a call. Only 3G and faster GSM networks support simultaneous data and voice calls. Learn which network your phone supports. If your network doesn't support simultaneous data and voice calls, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on to use iMessage while you're on a call.
    Restart your device.
Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings on your iPhone.
If you still can't send or receive an iMessage, follow these steps
Make sure that the contact trying to message you isn't blocked in Settings > Messages > Blocked.
Make sure that the contact you're trying to send a message to is registered with iMessage.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, back up or forward important messages and delete your current messaging threads with the contact. Create a new message to the contact and try again.
If the issue occurs with a specific contact or contacts, delete and recreate the contact in the Contacts app. Create a new message to the newly created contact and try again.
Back up and restore your device as new.

  • IMessages sending to iPhone without data/wifi

    Hi all,
When I text my friend with my iPhone it goes through and says "delivered" however it is sending through as iMessage. My friend however has no data plan. I thought it was when she had wifi but the times I texted, she didn't and it still went through as an iMessage. I checked her settings and texts/messages only send/receieve to that number, and same with mine. When I send the message, I try and highlight the message to see if it will allow me the option of "sending as text message" but it sends right away, the message "delivered" comes up and when I highlight the message my only option is to "copy."
This has never happened before, only within the last two to three weeks. I don't know if it's an update issue but it's bugging the both of us. I tried the exact same situation with my brother who has data (and I put his iMessages off) and it will automatically go through as a text message. So now it comes down to me always having to go to my iMessages options and disabling it just to send a text to my friend which should regularly just go through.
    Any help is much appreciated!!

    Figured it out:
She recently enabled iMessages on her iPad. All the messages were sending there...but what still confuses me is that the messages went through even when she didn't have wifi on either devices...
ah well. I'll save that for another day. I've solved my frustrations lol. Thanks for the help!

  • Existing ATT Customer going from 3G to 3GS:  activation problems

I know this isn't an Apple issue (it's A "No MMS and Tethering" T&T's problem...). But thought I'd check here to see if I am missing something.
I popped my old SIM card (from my 3G) into the new 3GS phone. For a while the "activating phone...this may take some time" message was there. After I synced my data, music, etc, the message disappeared. Now there's just " _ _ _ _" where the ATT signal logo usually is.
Is there something else I need to do, or just wait?

The new phone came with a SIM card. Use that one per:

Is it possible to recover my data from iCloud backup without working wifi? I have as many other upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.2 with the result that the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth no longer works. However, i can connect to iTunes via cable but there is wrong version of backup.

    Answer is no.
If you want the iCloud backup you have to have n internet connection, thus WiFi.
The not working WiFi has happened with quite a number of users.
It is not exactly clear what is the cause but there are suggestions to clear it up:
Some people have had success by removing an apostrophe from the iPhone name. If your iPhone is called something like “John’s iPhone” then this might work. Go to Settings > General > About > Name and change it to something with no apostrophe.
Some people have reported success by putting the iPhone into Airplane mode and then going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings, but the problem may return.
You could also try going to Settings > Control Center and disable Access on Lock Screen then turn your iPhone off and on again.
Make sure that your router firmware is up to date.
Try backing up your iPhone and then restoring it. Check how to factory reset an iPhone for details.
If nothing is working for you, try contacting Apple or take your iPhone into an Apple Store.
    Succes, Lex

  • Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is trying to backup data from the iPhone.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support.  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my phone?

Everytime I try to update to iOS5 on my iPhone 4 I get an error containing 0xE while it is backing up data from the iPhone before installing the new operating system.  I have done everything suggested in Apple support with no success.  I still get the error everytime (about 5 minutes into backing up iPhone data).  How can I upgrade to iOS5 without losing all the data on my iPhone (the error message says that if I continue I will lose all data on the phone)?  If I have already synced the phone before upgrading the OS, would I be able to restore my data after installing the new OS by syncing after the OS upgrade is complete?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.

  • Iphone not available to existing ATT users??

I moved from T Mobile ( I was a satisfied customer) to ATT in Jan 2008 (just because I wanted to buy an iPhone). Salesman at ATT store told me that new IMPROVED iPhone will come out later this year (he said in Jun 2008). Well new iPhone was launched but ATT is asking me $ 399 for new iPhone. In Jan 2008 I got a cheap Nokia phone ( thinking I will soon switch over to iPhone), what kinda arrangement is this ?? I think ATT and Apple don't care for customers already trapped in their network....

This is an issue to take up with AT&T, these forums are merely an Apple user discussion board for tips tricks and solutions with Apple products. Nobody here can fix the problem you are having, or is authorized to make a decision for or against you.
That said... it doesn't sound like your problem is because you came from T-Mobile. The problem is because you just bought a phone in January. That is, bought a phone that carries a 2-year contract. One that, if you actually read the fine print, says you agree to pay a hefty fee if you don't stick to. AT&T has been making exceptions to first gen iPhone users who have a year (or something coming close to that) of service, but they aren't letting recent buyers out of that agreement, and as your experience shows, they're charging a $200 premium for the phone.
My advice would be to call up AT&T support/service. Ask to speak to a manager. The policy is what it is, you signed (and agreed to it), there's no getting around that. But explain your case and be nice and ask if they can make an exception. If they can't, then ask them when you will be eligible to upgrade your phone without paying a penalty.
    Good luck!

  • Hi, today I upgraded my iphone 4 to an iphone 5. I backed up and synced my data on itunes and icloud. My new iphone however reverted to my 2011 phone settings. how do i get yesterday's settings back and get my contacts and photos from icloud onto new phon

Just to give you a bit more detail. I upgraded my iphone 4 to an iphone 5 today. Last night I backed up and synced all my messages, photos and contacts on itunes and icloud. When I connected the new iphone 5 to itunes today, it somehow reverted back to my old phone settings from 2011 :S So now, I have apps, particularly games, that are incomplete. My contacts have numbers that are out of date and I have none of the photos that were taken in the past year. My 2012 messages are gone and old messages from 2011 are there. Now, all my phone data had been regularly stored and synced with itunes and icloud. So why did it revert back to 2011 phone settings and how can I get it to change to the settings that existed last night? Also all my information on icloud, how do I get that onto my new iphone? If I go on www.icloud.com and sign in, all my photos, contacts, mail and messages are there, but I have no idea how to transfer that to my new iphone 5. Any help on all of these issues would be appreciated, thanks.

In Regards to this, You possibly wont be able to get the contacts from the iPhone 4 unless there is a back up file on your computer.
The original phone would be disabled due to alot of attempts of the wrong passcode. If all your contacts are on the cloud at the moment, you would be able to just set the iPhone 4S up with iCloud on it then Turn On "Contacts".
This would be bring all the contacts down from your iCloud onto your 4S.
But you will only be able to merge your contacts with the cloud when your original iPhone either has been enabled or the passcode was entered.
If you have previously already had iCloud on that device and have contacts Turned on, you will be able to just enter the same Apple ID you used for iCLoud on your original phone and use it on your new one.
Your able to check what content your iCloud holds via www.icloud.com
If you are unable to get past the disabled screen, then unfortunately the device will have to be put into recovery mode and then restored via iTunes NOTE: This will delete all data.

  • Can I use my iPhone without buying a data plan?

Will the iPhone work without using a data plan?
I already have an iPad, which I prefer to use.

We use AT&T.  There is a data plan included in their basic rate but it is about 200MB/month if I recall correctly, so it isn't very much.  For serious data plan users you need to pay for an upgrade on that component (2GB/month or unlimited).  So you get a small amount as part of the basic package but it is really designed that you pay for an upgrade if you're going to really use the iPhone with data.  Nothing is "free" but you could consider the 200MB as the free data you get with the basic package.  You may find that there are times you would want to use it as iPads are not always the most convenient things to carry around (reminds me of when we were on holiday recently in a national park and people were holding up iPads trying to take photos in 30mph winds).

I had to erase my data to upgrade my iPhone software from an older version. I backed up first, but seem to have lost all my notes.   Does anyone know how retrieve my old notes?

Is this the note you are referring to:
Not sure if this can help you.
I checked my notes. They are stored here:
    MacintosHD/Users/MYHOME/Library/Containers/com.apple.notes/Data/Library/CoreData /ExternalRecords/
    xxxxxserie.of.numbers.probably.yours.are.different/IMAPNote/_records/0/
If I go tot this window on finder and enter Time Machine I can go back and find old notes...
If so, am I doing this on my new hard drive on on the time machine? When I do this on the time machine, what is "my home"? Also, I am unable to find "containers".
If I go to users/jeff/library, then I see components, compositions, contextual, etc, but not containers.
    Thanks

How can I play podcasts on my iphone without using data?

I used to sync my podcasts to my phone individually, but found out that the Podcast app works better for me.  It continously downloads the podcasts (not really sure when, that's the only thing, when its downloading it may use data depending on where you are) and also deletes the ones i have listened to.  Hopefully that will help you out!

  • HT201269 Is there a way to download/port the missing data/SMS to one iPhone without overwriting the new SMS on the newer iPhone?

SMS Transferring/downloading/backup : Is there a way to download/port the missing data/SMS to one iPhone without overwriting the new SMS on the newer iPhone? Here is my dilemma. My iPhone quit working and I couldn’t get it fixed as quickly as I needed to. I bought a used iPhone and started using it normally and downloaded the backup from itunes/icloud. There was a large gap in data where the first iPhone didn’t backup when I thought it had. I have SMS data on both phonesnow and  I need them for a court hearing. I have since had the other iPhone repaired and working perfectly. Will downloading a backup wipe out the newer SMS data? I am nervous because I can’t lose the information or my case mey be compromised. Any “Real Help” including programs that work to accomplish this would be very helpful. Thank You in advance…

No, direct access to manipulating the phone's filesystem is not permitted for 3rd party apps in the iOS.  It can't be done without hacking the phone, which you certainly don't want to do.  The messages can be combined and viewed on your computer, but not on a single phone.
